WEINBERG COMMUNITY FOR SENIOR LIVING GIDWITZ PLACE FOR ASSISTED LIVING

THE FRIEND CENTER FOR ALZHEIMER’S CARE

Dear Weinberg Families and Residents, Welcome to the Winter Edition of Weinberg Chatter! We have been busy over the last several months, and hope everyone has been staying warm or at least trying to! I want to thank all of the residents and families who generously contributed to the Resident Council Holiday Collection this year. The residents raised over $13,832 and each employee (personal care, housekeeping, engineering, food service, nursing and admin) received a wonderful Target gift card to help out during their holiday season. Staff and residents gathered in the social hall to enjoy the holiday party in December where the residents helped pass the gift cards out and staff enjoyed being recognized. During the holiday party the residents voted on the Snowmen that were made by the employees of Weinberg for their team building contest. (See cover.) We just want to remind you about our on-site outpatient therapy services. It is a highly motivating program designed to keep our residents active and interested in exercising on a daily basis. Physical, speech and occupational therapy are also available to our residents and the outside community members. These services are covered under Medicare Part B. Please ask us for more information regarding this wonderful benefit. Please remember our resident referral program. If any resident or family member refers a person to either Gidwitz Place or Friend Center and that person signs a one- year lease, the referring party will receive a check for $750.00. Our best referrals come from you, so please think of us! Finally, be sure to keep your eye out for emails and flyers about our upcoming events. Feel free to call me AT 847-236-7856 with any suggestions at any time. Jennifer Weininger Director Of Weinberg Community for Senior Living

Louis Woloshin Lou is an enthusiastic member of our Gidwitz family, frequently stating how much he appreciates his life here. He moved to Gidwitz 2 1/2 years ago, but shortly after, his beloved wife and high school sweetheart, Renee, passed away. (Renee had attended Adult Day Services and then lived at Lieberman Center.) Lou fondly recalls the support he received from social workers and other staff at Gidwitz during this difficult time. He definitely learned to live by this well-known advice: “When life gives you lemons, make lemonade”. Lou is a proud graduate of Marshall High School, where he met Renee at age 16. They got married at ages 19 and 20 at Temple Sholem by Rabbi Binstock. Lou enlisted in the Air Force, passed all the required tests, but the war ended three months later. He worked as a mechanical engineer, learning on the job and working with well-known architectural firms. Lou’s father came to the U.S. from the Ukraine, and his mother from Poland. Lou has two daughters and six grandchildren, all college graduates and all employed in the field of their majors. Lou beams with pride as he fills in the details of his family. Here at Weinberg, Lou participates in the Health Club, Sittercise, Drama Group, Men’s Club, and Jewish Learning programs with Rabbi Schorin, Sue Lewis, and Susan Buchbinder. Every Saturday he volunteers for several hours at Friend Center, visiting with residents and leading Bingo. Small world story: A resident who recently moved into Gidwitz was a teammate of Lou’s on the Marshall baseball team. The team made it to the state quarter finals, but lost the first game, which was the day after their Prom. (Had they had a little too much fun the night before? Both Lou and his pal tried out for the Chicago Cubs—Lou as catcher—and that dream was dashed. But Lou is a winner all around: he’s happy to be here and we are very fortunate to have him here with us!

Julio Ramos

Julio started at Weinberg eleven years ago, busing tables in the Gidwitz dining room part-time. For the past seven years he has been a full-time employee and has grown into the responsible position he holds today—Storeroom Clerk. This position involves ordering all the food and supplies for Gidwitz, Friend, Adult Day, Chicagoland Jewish High School, and the many catering events done by Weinberg. He manages a major inventory, consisting of 100 different items from six different providers. From paper and plastic goods, to meat, fish, produce and more—all of these supplies are ordered and stored under his direction. In order to assess food needs, he looks at the menus and orders accordingly. After working a full shift at Weinberg from 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., Julio then travels to a skilled care facility several miles down the road, where he works from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. Since his father is one of our chefs and his aunt is a housekeeper, Julio states, “This is a family business to me.” Julio has a history of a strong work ethic. Coming to this area from Mexico City at age 15, instead of returning to school, he went immediately to work. The oldest of four children, he explained why he chose to work: 1) he wanted his three younger siblings to be able to go to school, and 2) he wanted to help his father support the family. Julio has been married to his wife Alicia for seven years. Alicia is a pharmacist, and they have two young children—Ulises (five months old) and Uriel (five years old.) We consider ourselves very fortunate to have Julio as a Weinberg team member. He is a great guy!
