WHAT’S HAPPENING AT WEINBERG COMMUNITY By Jennifer Weininger, Executive Director

January 2020

New Year’s Party

2020 has a nice ring to it, doesn’t it? We’re still adjusting to dating our official documents and checks without abbreviating the year (to avoid scammers!). But the good news is we’ve finally recovered from the Roaring 20s-themed soirée we threw to usher in the New Year! We enjoyed music from the Spirit Duo Orchestra, 1920s-themed décor, and food! Thank you to Hannah, Adult Day Service Coordinator, and JUF Volunteers who helped to make this such a memorable event.

Elaine’s Retirement

On Friday, January 3, we honored and said farewell to our colleague and friend Elaine Brody. Although we wish she could stay at Weinberg for a while longer, after 22 years she is officially retired and spending the winter months with her husband on a beach in Florida! We will miss seeing Elaine everyday but she promises to return to play mahjong!

January GEM Award Winner

Eve Barczynski has been a part of the Activities team for the last 5 years. She is a great assistant to the team and always ready to lend a helping hand. Her favorite part about working at Weinberg Community is connecting with all the residents and hearing their stories. Eve also loves working with such a great group of ladies in the Activities department.

Japanese Night

Twenty Gidwitz residents recently enjoyed a Japanese-themed dinner in a beautifully decorated Gidwitz Social Hall. Chef Jasmine Cook, Sous Chef Will Chang, and 2nd Cook Jeff Wolfgram prepared a six course “made from scratch” demonstration style dinner that was served by our very own Geisha, Mayra Carbajal, Weinberg Dining Supervisor. The menu included Miso Soup, Vegetable Tempura with Dipping Sauces and Pan Seared Black Cod. Our next themed dinner in the series is scheduled for Thursday, February 20 and will honor Black History Month and showcase the cuisine of Africa. Seating is limited to twenty residents and reservation information will be available shortly.

Interview with New Resident

Let’s give a warm welcome to our new resident Ragel Nudel, but please call her Rae! Rae just moved to Weinberg from West Palm Beach, Florida. She immigrated to the United States in 1949 from Montevideo, which is the capital and largest city of Uruguay. Since her first language is Spanish, she began working in a factory in New York as a translator. This began her career as she moved on to translate at a center for Jewish seniors, then to teach Spanish at a high school in Brooklyn. Rae met her late husband on a blind date while celebrating New Year’s Eve in 1951. Together they shared a great life and had 3 children and 5 grandchildren. Rae enjoys attending exercise programs and Shabbat services. When you see her, please say hello!
