Host Your Event at Weinberg Community
We are happy to host your outside group, such as a men’s or women’s group, in one of our private rooms at Gidwitz. We’ll take care of set up, catering and clean up and you get to be the host! To arrange your event, contact Michelle Bernstein at 847.236.7852. It’s always great to have your colleagues and friends see how wonderful our community is! Welcome Deena Karno
We would like to give a warm welcome to Deena Karno as our new Personal Care Manager/Social Worker! She will be slowly transitioning into her role within the next few weeks. Deena Karno is currently going into her 21st year as a CJE SeniorLife employee. For the past 5 years, Deena has been the Manager of Regulatory Training and Staff Development (Learning Department) for the CJE system. She received her Masters of Public Health with an emphasis on health education from Benedictine University in Lisle, Illinois and her Masters of Social Work from the University of Illinois, Jane Addams College of Social Work in Chicago, Illinois. Deena is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker in the State of Illinois. Prior to managing the training and development process at CJE, Deena worked as a Staff Educator for 10 years in the Learning department. Previous to her training position, Deena was a social worker at Lieberman for 6 years and worked closely with residents and families. Very recently Deena became a Certified Dementia Practitioner through the National Council of Certified Dementia Practitioners. Currently Deena is an adjunct faculty member in the Department of Health Sciences at William Rainey Harper College in Palatine, Illinois. We can’t wait for her to join our team!

Donation Box
Now is our time to give back to the community with our new program “Weinberg Gives Back”! Throughout the year we will be hosting various charities at Town Hall to learn about their foundation and discuss ways Weinberg Community for Senior Living can help make a difference. We will have a donation bin located by the Gidwitz reception desk. This is a great way for residents and their families to get rid of items they no longer use and donate them to charities in need. This month we will be featuring PAWS Chicago! Volunteers from PAWS Chicago joined us June 27th at our Town Hall meeting to educate us more about their foundation and discuss donation opportunities. Please encourage all family and friends to stop by and make donations as well. We will have a bin out at the Dog Parade Sunday, August 4th, 2019. We look forward to giving back to the community! Dear Residents and Families, As some of you have already heard, we are transitioning from HealthPro Heritage to Joint Neuro Rehab Associates of Chicago and Chicago Med Rehab, which will be our new provider for Home Health and Outpatient Therapy as of August 1. Many employees of the HealthPro Heritage team have already been reassigned to another client. We know that it is difficult to say farewell to the professionals who you have worked with closely over the past few years. We are confident that you will also benefit from working with the very qualified therapists from Joint Neuro Rehab who are thrilled to have the opportunity to be a part of your health and wellness team. Everyone who is currently on therapy will be transferred over to the new company and we will make this transition to the new company as seamless as possible for our residents and family members. A special note‌ we are delighted that Stevie Foreman, our exercise trainer, has chosen to transfer to the new company and will continue to work with us at Weinberg. Therefore, all of your 1:1 training and exercises classes will continue with Stevie. You may ask why we are making this change at this time when HealthPro Heritage has been such an integral part of Weinberg’s healthcare services. One reason is that CJE has an opportunity to be a partial owner in the new company, which will give us more input into the high quality of care that you will receive, and which you expect from CJE. Another reason is that we can be more innovative in our offerings, for example, we are exploring the addition of a pain management clinic at Weinberg which would be of significant benefit to our residents. Like many of you, we offer our thanks and good wishes to the HealthPro Hertiage Team for their years of service to our extended CJE family. As always, feel free to call me with any questions. Interview with New Resident
We would like to welcome our new residents Raymond & Rochelle Ogaz to Weinberg Community! This month we interviewed Raymond Ogaz and learned some neat things about his life. For starters, he is probably the only Jewish Apache Indian you will meet and if you get the opportunity you should listen to him play his Native American flute! Raymond also served our country during the Korean War in 1947. He is proud of his commitment to our country. All of us at Weinberg Community salute you for your service. Another interesting fact about Raymond is that he and his wife married and lived in Colorado before relocating back to Northbrook to be closer to family. The Ogaz’s are an outgoing, happy couple. Please say hello when you meet them! July GEM Winner: Preethi Abraham (RN)
Preethi is one of our nurses who cares for residents at both Gidwitz Place and Friend Center. She has been a part of our team since November 2017 and a nurse for more than 20 years. We asked her what the best part of working for Weinberg Community was and she said “I really enjoy working at CJE and I look forward to coming to work. This is one of the best places I have worked for and enjoy my work, the teamwork between all staff, and caring for the best residents.” Food Bits & Bites, By Tom Slepicka
Welcome to Summer at Weinberg! Or is it? This was one of the strangest Spring seasons that I can ever remember. What is the old saying? April Showers bring May Flowers? I think we can easily say that “April Showers brought May Showers and then even more June Showers.” Let’s see if August finally shapes up to be a good summer month for us. 7

July 2019
The weather may be a little strange lately but things are certainly heating up in the kitchen. The team worked on some fun events for July and a few are listed below. We started the month off with our 4th of July BBQ beginning at 4:30pm in the Gidwitz Lobby & Dining Room. The culinary team has a few new items for you to try. On Thursday, July 18th we had our first Cajun Themed Dinner. Chef Jasmine and Chef Will brought us on a culinary adventure through bayou country. And what is summer without fresh-made Smoothies? We began making delicious and refreshing smoothies in the Main Lobby during the month of July. Watch the calendar for the exact upcoming dates. On Thursday, July 11th we rolled out our new program Walker Valet service for residents during dinner service. This will allow for greater comfort of residents and staff alike. On our trial date Weinberg Managers were on hand to assist with the logistics of our initial attempt. With the program being a success, we hope to roll out a permanent program soon. And last but certainly not least, it is with great pleasure that I introduce to you our new Dining Room Supervisor, Mayra Carbajal. We have promoted her from her Dining Server position at Weinberg and look forward to having her on our Management Team. Mayra has already proven to be a valuable asset to the operation in her prior role and now her new position. Please join me in congratulating her and wishing her all the best in her new endeavor. As always our goal is to provide every resident and guest with the best dining experience possible. We appreciate all of your comments and suggestions. Remember to join us at 1:00pm on the last Thursday of every month for our Food Focus meetings. This is a great forum for us to communicate what’s happening in Weinberg Dining and give you an opportunity to let us know how we are doing. Happy Summer!
