WHAT’S HAPPENING AT WEINBERG COMMUNITY By Jennifer Weininger, Executive Director

March 2020

Thank you for your ongoing cooperation and support during these unprecedented times. At this time, all residents are safe and healthy at Gidwitz Place and Friend Center. It has been a joy to watch your videos and seeing some of your family photos that the residents love to receive! We have also been getting lots of emails and pictures from the local schools such as my son’s 3rd grade Sherwood Elementary School, Moriah, and Rochelle Zell as well as many others. We will be working on sharing those with all of you and your family members soon. Life Enrichment virtual programs are up and running as of today on the residents’ channel 15 and in the common areas at Friend Center. Please encourage your residents to tune in to channel 15 for engaging and stimulating programs that they can do to keep their minds off this COVID 19 even for a few minutes. Continue to watch for our emails should anything new arise, otherwise please stay healthy and safe and know your loved one is in good hands with our Weinberg Family! Don’t hesitant to email me at jennifer.weininger@cje.net and I will do my best to get back to you as soon as possible. 1

Once again, we are recommending precautions to avoid exposure to the virus which are similar to those you would take to avoid the flu:

1. Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds. If soap and water are not available, use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer. 2. Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth with unwashed hands. 3. Avoid close contact with people who are sick. 4. Cover coughs and sneezes with a tissue and then throw the tissue in the trash. If tissues aren’t available, cough or sneeze into the inside of your elbow. 5. Clean and disinfect frequently touched objects and surfaces. 6. If you feel sick with a fever, 100.4 degrees or higher, have a dry cough or experience difficulty breathing or have shortness of breath, seek immediate medical advice. 7. It is wise to call ahead before going to a doctor’s office or ER and let them know you are coming in—they may have a different protocol for you. 8. STAY HOME WHEN YOU ARE SICK UNTIL YOU HAVE BEEN FEVER-FREE WITHOUT THE USE OF FEVER REDUCING MEDICINE FOR AT LEAST 72 HOURS. GEM Award Winner: Sergio Reyes

Let’s congratulate Sergio Reyes as this month’s GEM award winner who has been a part of our dining team for over a year. Sergio is super friendly with the residents and puts a smile on everyone’s face. He goes above and beyond and helps with other tasks without being asked. Thank you for always putting the residents’ needs first and helping train our new servers. Fun Fact: Sergio has really been a part of our Weinberg team longer than a year as he is also a relative of Horencia and Reina in Housekeeping! 2

Interview New Residents:

Let’s give a warm welcome to our newest residents Leonard and Barbara Worsek. The couple married in 1941 and has a large family of 4 children, 6 grandchildren, and 5 great-children with one on the way! Leonard has a fascinating history with Weinberg Community as he was a founder and former Board Chair of CJE SeniorLife. Leonard has been a champion of CJE for 55 years beginning as a Board member of the old Parkview home, which later merged into CJE. Since his retirement, Leonard has become the historian for CJE and has recently published a book called The History of CJE. Barbara was the longest serving trustee of the Multiple Sclerosis Society of Illinois. Leonard and Barbara are active members of the Jewish community and are looking forward to many more years of activity at Gidwitz Place.

Here are some fun things that happened earlier this month:

African-Themed Dinner In honor of Black History Month, we celebrated by having an African-themed dinner. The night began with Maharagwe spiced coconut bean soup and beef samosa appetizers. Entrees included beef & rice potato pilau served with kachumbari. We ended the night with a delicious dessert of mandazi with caramel sauce which is like an African beignet. Thank you to our dining team for a great night!

Monty Rosen Takes the Polar Plunge

This year, our very own Monty Rosen participated in Chicago’s Polar Plunge. At age 86, Monty dove into water that was 2 degree above freezing! The second photo is Monty partaking in a 100-mile run from 1996! Incredible!

Passover Catering

Don’t forget to get your Passover orders in within the new few days as we are having curbside catering. Place Contact Tom Slepicka, Director of Food Services, at 847.236.7862. Unfortunately, Seders will not be held in the dining rooms this year due to social distancing.
