THE QUEEN OF COLOR

a group exhibition

Nix. The sky at night. Space. Acheron, the river that separates the land of the living and the dead. A raven perched in a pine. The impenetrability of an unlit cave. Your shadow, walking beside you on a sunny day. Black is freighted with associations, differing among cultures. From death, mourning, witchcraft, and evil, to power and authority, from fertility or secrets, to fashionable elegance. Black was one of the first colors used in art, found in Neolithic cave paintings, the pigment created from charcoal.

Each year, Charlotte Jackson Fine Art brings together a single-color exhibition featuring works of art exploring multiple facets of one color. For 2020, this group show brings together a collection of works in the enigmatic (and achromatic) black. The inspiration for the show comes from artist Max Cole, whose works have, for many years, explored the mysteries of black. As, Cole says: “Black is the royalty of colors being comprised of the completely saturated light from the entire spectrum which contains all colors. It absorbs the spectrum of light rather than reflecting it. As such black exists at the edge of perception and opens the door to the mystery of the unknown. This quality is the portal from what is seen to what is sensed. This is what art is about: Content beyond the literal. In my mind this elegance makes Black the Queen of Colors.

Black occupies a liminal space in our mind and our vision. It pulls, it opens, it sparks and deepens. In pitch darkness, with no light available for the eye to discern shapes or colors, the mind will create them: images, colors, shapes and movements that bloom and fade in the darkness. Each of the works in Black: the Queen of Color engages the viewer with this color in a different way. Some shine and glint, teasing the viewer into seeing a rainbow of colors within their depths. Some pull at the viewer, seeming to reach out, allowing them to fall into a unknowable depth of dark space.

Rich. Complex. Elegant. Unknowable. Black: the Queen of Color, will entrance viewers with its subtle grace and infinite possibility.
