Circle Paintings 0-12
“Continuous Practice is the Circle of the Way.” -Dagen The circle is the most primordial of all shapes. The Enso or Zen Circle symbolizes enlightenment. It is seamless spaciousness. It is the True Dharma Eye of Oneness. It is the symbol of undivided activity and emptiness, which is absolute nothingness. It is wholeness with no beginning and no end. Emptiness is fullness. It is the nothing that is not there and the Nothing that is. According to the Heart Sutra “Form is emptiness, emptiness is form.” “It is presence in absence.” -Basho It is the void or symbol of the non-separateness of all things. “In Buddhist Emptiness there is no time, no space, no becoming, no thingness, it is what makes all things possible, it is a zero full of infinite possibilities, it is a void of in inexhaustible contents.” -D.T. Suzuki In this series of circular painting I have left the center open to represent nothingness and the spaciousness of the Dharma Eye. I have painted the front edge around the circles with different colors and calligraphic marks to represent life’s variations. Outside and/ or inside edges are painted white or black for neutrality. As Rilke said “I am circling around God ... “
