EDITOR´S

Très Chic has established itself over the last year as Marbella’s pre-eminent fashion and lifestyle magazine, but being a Clevedon girl when I visit friends and family in the west country people say, “Why not launch your magazine here.” So here we are and it’s been non-stop at Très Chic since our last issue. We are still reeling from our whirlwind trip to London to shoot Ruth Lorenzo who blew us away with her energy, enthusiasm and sense of style. Supermodels eat your hearts out – this girl knows how to work a camera, as you will see on pages 28-35. We were also lucky enough to hook up with Joaquín Cortés for a quick chat before his Marbella performance. Did he or didn’t he break Naomi Campbell’s heart? Flick to page 56 to find out. We are really feeling the 70s theme that is flowing through fashion channels this summer. We can’t get enough of the retro vibe that reaches from our wardrobe to the kitchen, which is why, as well as our 70s-influenced trends page, you will find classic recipes from the Abba era gracing our food section. It was a busy month for parties too. We were there dressed in white at the Nikki Beach party. We also sent our travel editor to Tarifa, La Posada Sacristia proves that there is so much more there than wind turbines and surfing – there is luxury too! As always, fashion features heavily in this issue, which has not one but two amazing fashion shoots and a beauty shoot by our star photographer Jayden Fa and his creative team. What would we do without you Jayden? We certainly wouldn’t be able to stay up to date with all the latest trends without his keen eye and savvy style radar. We hope you love his latest work as much as we do.

Understated sexy is where it’s at this spring, The era of Hervé Leger body-con is kind of, a bit, well, done! And like anything, if we see too much of it (in this case skin, super high heels that you can’t dance in, super short skirts and cleavage) we get bored. Isn’t it funny that Marilyn Monroe was considered one of the sexiest women in the world, and she was never seen in a short skirt? Anyway, this season we are treated to a plethora of sheer loveliness, from YSL, Chloé, Ferretti and Dior; all with a nod to our more demure, grown-up side. There’s also an emphasis on one of the staple parts of my wardrobe – the blouse. It’s one of my most trusted types of clothing, and worn with jeans or to the office a sheer blouse can give you that womanly, self-assured kick. Alluring and sensuous, with skirts in great lengths and patterns to die for, I suggest we catch a breeze-in-chiffon and simply float into spring.

There is no fashion trend quite as enduring as the trusty denim jean, and this season we are treated to a refreshing spin on the old faithful. Gone are the days of straight legged, blue, hipster or bell bottom, in 2011 we can choose from a delectable array of colours and customised looks. With new styles such as the super-slouch and the sportster to tempt us, we are treated to a choice of pop colours and prints that would excite even the safest denim wearer. Beautiful florals from Topshop, candy colours from American Apparel, and with Vivienne Westwood designing for Lee, it’s time to revamp that old collection and step boldly into summer in colour.

GOING D N U O R NDERG U

With her new single about to hit the airwaves, we catch up with ex-X Factor star Ruth Lorenzo to find out what she’s been up to since we last saw her on our screens Words By Daisy Omissi. Photography by Cj Hadlow

Summer may officially be here but today the sun in London is playing hide and seek – it hides, we seek – and the sun is most definitely on a winning streak. Fortunately, our venue for our shoot with ex-X Factor star Ruth Lorenzo is indoors at the ultra-grungy and urban Cable nightclub in London Bridge, and we take shelter from the rain under the arches of the railway. The soundtrack to our day is the rumble of trains as they rattle towards the station above us shaking the venue and making it feel like the ceiling might fall on our heads at any moment.

of the Lorenzo clan in Murcia, Spain where Ruth was born. When she was 10 years old, Ruth and her family moved to the States where she stayed until she was 16 and they returned to Spain. One of six kids, two girls and four boys, Ruth still has an American twang to her accent, which she admits is, “A bit all over the place.” Now based in London, Ruth is still riding the wave of her success on X Factor three years ago and travelling around Europe performing concerts. This summer alone she is scheduled to sing in Russia, Paris, Nice, Ireland, and Marbella. “I am so excited to be going back to Marbella,” she tells us while she is getting ready for the shoot. “It is so cool that they asked me back. I had tears in my eyes at the end of the show last year. Performing in a bullring is something special for anyone who is Spanish and the crowd was just amazing.” When we meet her in London she has just returned from Madrid where she performed at the Must online magazine awards. And she will shortly be returning to Spain for a promotional tour prior to the launch of her single. “My Spanish audience is growing all the time,” she reveals, although her biggest fans are still English and Irish, who have been following her since X Factor. In fact, it was some of her original English fans who encouraged her to enter X Factor in the first place. “I was working at a golf resort in Spain singing at

“It is harder and more painful to follow your heart and do what you believe in, in the long term I think I will have more credibility and longevity as an artist” The only thing louder than the noise of the train is Ruth’s amazing voice as she sings us a snippet from her latest track Burn, which is being launched this July. With a voice this big, it is no surprise that she went so far on X Factor in 2008. Despite the chilly, underground venue, Ruth is on top form and has her entourage with her for moral support – her nine-year-old niece and her older sister, who just flew in from San Francisco on route to see the rest 26 TRÈS CHIC

the weekends,” Ruth explains. “There was an English family who used to come every year to the resort and they told me about X Factor. They kept saying I should enter and then for my birthday they gave me an entry form. It’s thanks to them that I am where I am today.” So what is it about Ruth that has kept her star illuminated while so many other ex-X Factor stars have disappeared from the limelight? It is obvious from watching her work on our shoot that she is hard working, professional and enthusiastic about everything she does. From the minute she arrives on set she is focused, full of ideas and totally game for whatever we suggest, despite the slightly damp and dark conditions. She loves all the clothes we have brought along for her and doesn’t complain in the slightest about the numerous costume changes and hours of hair and makeup.

TRÈS CHIC Exclusive It definitely helps that Ruth is passionate about what she does and has a typically fiery Spanish personality that means no-one in the industry is going to push her around. She even walked away from her EMI contract because they were pushing her in a direction that she felt was wrong for her. “I am not a Euro pop kind of girl, it is just not me” she says. “If you go down that route, you will have one hit and then disappear forever. I want to do music I love and I don’t want to sell out. Although it is harder and more painful to follow your heart and do what you believe in, in the long term I think I will have more credibility and longevity as an artist.” Where Ruth has had an advantage over other ex-X Factor contestants is her attitude towards the fame game. She has an instinctive understanding about who she is and how she wants to be portrayed. She isn’t interested in appearing in magazines every day just for the sake of it and you will never see images of her falling out of nightclubs drunk or posing in her underwear for a men’s mag. She is way too savvy to be sucked into that darker side of celebrity living. “Fame that comes quickly, leaves quickly,” says Ruth, who has been singing all her life and knows that it is hard work not paparazzi pictures that will get her to the top. “The world of celebrity can confuse you. Some artists get in a panic if they aren’t in a certain magazine, when really they should only panic if they can’t sing anymore. It is easy to lose sight of what’s important.” Ruth is way too busy penning sings for her new album as well as writing for other artists, such as her friend Danni Minogue, to be out partying the night away. “Danni and I have become great friends since X Factor,” says Ruth who was mentored by the Aussie star during her stint on the show. “She is mostly in Australia since she had her baby but we email all the time and she looks over all my new material; she is always interested in what I am up to. Her upcoming album is going to be amazing – I think it is going to surprise a lot of people.” She has had less contact with Simon Cowell since the show, but admits she’d love it if he came to see her perform in Marbella where he has house. “Simon had nothing but kind words to say about me during the show, he is such a lovely guy,” she says with a coy smile when we ask if he didn’t have a bit of a crush on her during X Factor. “Simon is a business man and once you understand that business is business it is much easier to get along with him. You can’t take anything he says or does personally. He is preparing contestants on the X Factor for this industry, which is not a nice business to be in; it is nasty, rude and can be awful. “Simon gave me the confidence to stand up for who I am. I was a typical Spanish woman with big hips

and big boobs, but he made me feel good when he said I looked beautiful.” Ruth still has the curvaceous boobs and hips, but she has drastically slimmed down in the three years since she found fame. Now she picks at a lentil salad during our shoot avoiding the flapjacks that the rest of the crew are tucking into. She is incredibly aware of her body and movements while we are taking her pictures, moving and improvising to give each shot a unique angle; she is a photographer’s dream! “I used to be so nervous about doing shoots. Now I appreciate how hard models have to work and how they need to understand where they are putting their bodies.” It is hard to imagine Ruth being nervous as she totally takes control of our six-hour photo session in the underground club. From the moment she walks in she takes over the situation without any diva behaviour but with charm and a sense of fun. “I am a bit of a control freak,” she laughs as she grabs the eyeliner from our make-up artist and applies it herself. “My make-up artist totally hates me. I always have to do my eyeliner myself. I think I have OCD,” she jokes. “I am a bit like Monica from Friends. Well, a cross between Monica and Phoebe. Phoebe represents my creative side.” Ruth had stipulated that she wanted the shoot to be “Rock N Roll” and we were happy to deliver, mixing up outfits from edgy brands such as A&G Couture with Stephen Webster jewellery. When it came to shoes Ruth gave us the pick of her immense collection of Kurt Geigers, Jimmy Choos and Manolo Blahniks – and we were like kids in a candy shop! She must currently have at least 70 pairs crammed into her wardrobe and that’s not taking into account the numerous pairs she gives away on a regular basis. “I love shoes and bags,” she confesses, “But if I had to choose I’d take shoes every time. Shoes, shoes, shoes! I am much more into bags and shoes than clothes,” she adds. “I love buying second hand clothes from markets. My signature look is a pair of amazing, black leggings, Manolos, a cool, second-hand leather jacket from Camden Market, a nice vintage clutch from Brick Lane and chunky, silver jewellery from The Great Frog or Crazy Pig on Carnaby Street.” Completing Ruth’s rock n roll look is a tattoo that snakes up her arm reading: The Raspberry Pattern. The significance? “I like randomness, small versions of patterns in the universe – raspberries are one of them, they are just random but beautiful.” Ruth may be addicted the randomness that life brings, but it wasn’t anything random that got her to where she is today, it was sheer hard work, commitment and passion, and for that we salute her. With special thanks to Cable London. 32 TRÈS CHIC

White Out

The Nikki Beach white party is possibly one of the most famous parties in the world. Jet-setters from around the globe fly in for this iconic night. The moment those fireworks (and champagne corks) go off you know that summer has officially started. This year a sea of partygoers dressed in white danced the night away to the hottest sounds of the summer provided by sexy Swiss model and DJ Tanja La Croix, and recently retired motorbike ace, Fonsi B20, along with resident Nikki Beach DJ Mario Zarate. The Nikki Beach go gos (direct from Miami) were on top form strutting their stuff on the podiums and giving the crowd an amazing show. We loved the sax player and electronic violin players who really upped the tempo of the night. We have never seen Nikki Beach so packed or as many people having so much fun. And the best news? This was just the first of many spectacular nights that Nikki Beach has lined up for 2011 – it is going to be a white hot summer! www.nikkibeach.com

TRENDS THROUGH THE AGES. 48

48 TRÈS CHIC

Ginger Rogers

TRÈS CHIC Feature

By Lisa-Jayne We never know what trend is just round the corner. Have you ever wondered how fashion keeps reinventing itself, it’s like one big cycle, every few years trends come back but with a new twist which allows you and me to go and buy the latest item of clothing. It is thought that trends can last up to a year and come back round every 20 yrs or so. Designers work all year trying to come up with new styles that make us want to buy them, they look back at past fashions, gaining inspiration and look at how they can come up with new styles that we will want to buy – all the time trying to think of new ideas, based on the past classics or latest craze. It seems just when you and I get hold of the latest must haves, something new comes out. We convince ourselves that it is going to be fashionable and that we just have to have it! Try not to impulse buy or buy every new trend. It’s nice to be yourself and individual. Think of how much you spend on clothes and are you really wearing all of them? How many times have you said to yourself ‘I have a wardrobe full of clothes and still nothing to wear’! If we lack confidence then clothes can help us feel better about ourselves. We all know that when we go clothes shopping, it puts a smile on any girls face and that feel good factor is amazing. It is just the same as when you have your hair done, you feel a million dollars when you walk out of the salon. High street stores are constantly trying to attract us in to buy new items. By keeping up with the runway trends and what the top designers are selling, they succeed in attracting us with new clothes or fashion must haves. The retailers make their own versions of the designer looks at a lower price so that we can afford them, and then this allows everyone to be able to follow that particular fashion trend. The down side to any major trend is that everyone is wearing them after a while, and if you’re like me you want to move on to the next trend

and not look like everyone else, especially if you have been wearing the trend for ages. When the market becomes saturated, it lowers the price and you can see the garment in all the high street stores and across the market stalls. Different trends have come back round again recently, leggings, flares, mini-skirts and not forgetting the shoulder pads of the 80’s. Each trend seems to surface quicker than before. Some trends may be about for a while before they become a hit on the high street. Hareem pants for example have been about for a few years in different variations and names, but only now are they a huge hit with all of us fashionistas! Hollywood has been a huge influence on what we wear and what comes into fashion –famous actors and actresses have become our fashion icons. What they wear in movies or on the red carpet influence what we wear, and of course inspires the designers to come up with fabulous copies that you and I can buy from the retailers. Think back to all the fabulous old movie stars, Ginger Rogers, Katherine Hepburn, Marilyn Monroe to name just a few. Nowadays, famous celebs are the main style icons; they play a huge part in TRÈS CHIC 49

what we wear. Celebrities are great at taking style from the past and reinventing it. All the time they are updating the trend to be more wearable. Jennifer Anniston, Victoria Beckham and Sarah Jessica Parker all make the look apear more beautiful and easy to wear. Magazines play a huge part in informing us of what our celebs are wearing and where you can buy it on the high street. We even have weekly glossies now at a cheap price, showing us how we can look like our famous celebs for a lot less. At least you can get the look and feel good about yourself. “Dress like a celeb for less.” Before the glossy magazines were readily available, women followed their on screen fashion icons, to follow the hairstyles, make up and clothes that their favourite stars wore. Style trends vary and if you are not a fashion conscious person - who has to have the latest look or key fashion piece to update our wardrobe then you are a fashion individual - you wear what you want to wear rather than following fashion. Music has been a huge inspiration to our fashion designers. If you look back over the years starting with the swinging 60’s, brilliant inspiration to fashion, remember the Rockers & Teddy Boys, beehive hair do’s and the short mini-skirts. The mellow 60’s with the flower power look, flares, head scarves, wedges a very relaxed look. The punk look of the 70’s has come round many times, PVC dresses, long boots, shoulder pads and not forgetting the neon colour clothing that has just come back round. As you can see the past decades have been very individual and create a piece of fashion history, giving inspiration to all of us. As fashion trends change, we look back at the styles that influence our current fashion. Every decade for the last 40 years represents some form of fashion we see today. When we look back at old pictures, we laugh at the silly styles, but much of what we wear today is similar. As style progresses, good and bad trends come and go. Fashion designers have the task of picking the best of what is good in previous fashions and updating it to make it modern and wearable for the modern day. How is it that our fashion changes so suddenly? We find ourselves dressing like the models in magazines and the mannequins in store windows, then in no time at all the fashions have changed and another trend has appeared. If we did not have new trends and season changes we would be so bored of our wardrobe collections and many retailers would go out of business. Over the last few years we have come across cheap and disposable fashion. It is so easy to buy cheap clothing that can be worn once then thrown away. It is thought that we buy more clothes now than we ever have done but at last we are all starting to realise you can only have so many pairs of jeans and t shirts. My thoughts – there are only 7 days of the week so best to have some nice pieces that you will enjoy wearing and look great in – remember quantity over quality. The saying goes that if you hold on to something long enough, it will come back into fashion sooner or later, With a little updating, some styles do come back around.

I love my jeans I wear them all year round but want to invest in a good pair or go for a new denim piece that will take me through to the autumn The denim look is back, washed out and distressed looking. This season there is so much to choose from, jeans, waistcoats, shorts, jumpsuits and denim skirts. The denim waistcoat is a great key piece for this season, layer over your favourite printed or plain T shirt and team with a short floral skirt. Great for weekend walks along the beach. Denim shorts look great with a silky vest and a sequined style jacket or cardigan or wear a floral blouse and soft knit cardigan for the pretty girl look. Or go for shorts with a vest and military style jacket, combining casual with dressy. Another look that can take you from day to night teamed with a shoe boots or gladiator heels. The denim jump suit is back and worn with ankle sandals is a great outfit for the summer. Always look to show off your curves so draw in waist with a fabulous belt. I believe accessories

finish any outfit. Watch the cut of your jeans, you need to wear a shape and style that suits your body shape. There is a huge choice on the market. Boot cut is best for most of us as it elongates your legs and can be worn with boots or heels. The skinny is great with heels if you are slim and have good legs. If you have a large bottom or wide hips go for minimal pocket detailing as these draw attention to your problem area. Watch out for the height of the rise you don’t want to show your underwear and a low rise can cause a slight tummy bulge, so go for a mid rise. Sometimes go up a size on the waist helps. Distressed jeans teamed with a t shirt or blouse in flesh colours with an embellished jacket, will be fabulous with metallic sandals for day or the new shoe boots for evening. You could be adventurous and roll up the hem of your jeans for a casual look. TRÈS CHIC 51

PRIVATE Dancer Joaquín Cortés may not be shy when it comes to dancing bare-chested in front of thousands of people, but his personal life is strictly off limits, says Daisy Omissi who interviewed the flamenco star prior to his Spanish tour TRÈS CHIC 53

T

here aren’t many flamenco dancers who travel the world and receive the same treatment as a rock star wherever they go! With screaming fans, groupies and girls fainting at his feet, Joaquín Cortés is renowned for being a ladykiller, just ask Naomi Campbell – he apparently broke her heart. Apart from being one of the sexiest men on earth, Joaquín Cortés is possibly the most iconic flamenco dancer on the international dance scene. His ground-breaking, contemporary style rocked the world of flamenco when he first burst onto the scene in the 1990s, and since then his notoriety as a performer and choreographer has gone from strength to strength. He has danced for George Bush at the White house, performed to sell out audiences at the Royal Albert Hall in London, appeared live on stage with J.Lo. If you weren’t a dancer what would you do for a living? It would be something to be with the world of arts; maybe a painter or sculptor, I don’t know, anything related to culture. Apart from dancing do you do anything else to keep fit? Apart from dancing, I do some cardio exercises, running and other sports; the truth is that I do really take care of my health and I have a very healthy lifestyle. Do your family and friends have any nicknames for you? Who hasn’t got a nickname from their childhood? When I was a little kid my eyes were very chinese-like, very narrow;

54 TRÈS CHIC

everyone used to call me “Chinese” or “Little Chinese”. Do you have any rituals that you follow before a performance? Sometimes I cross myself and kiss the stage floor before I go out on stage. What do you do to relax after a show? I have a shower, eat something and just relax for a while. Obviously, after a show my muscles are going two thousand miles per hour and it takes a while to wind down. How would your friends and family describe you? I think they’d say I am a very disciplined person, a fighter and above all a person who loves what he’s doing; I love my world. You have performed all over the world, which is your favourite city to dance in? There are so many beautiful cities in the world, it wouldn’t be fair to say I like one more than another, or prefer one country to another. It’s impossible to choose because there are so many interesting places to see. Your parents are from Malaga and Cordoba, does it feel special to be coming back to your roots of Andalucía to do a show? Of course, I feel very special being Andalusian. When you come back to your land where your origins are, where your family and friends live, it is always special. Do you still live in Spain when you aren’t touring? Well, I’m living in Spain, but I have lived in New York in the

USA, and in London in the UK. Right now I am thinking about moving back to the USA. You have performed with Alicia Keys and Jennifer Lopez, are there any other stars you’d like to perform with? I had such good luck performing with those singers, but also I have performed with Michael Jackson at the Monte Carlo Awards, and with many different artists at international galas such as the MTV Awards, the Grammys and the Oscars. I love collaborating with other artists, because it makes you grow not only as an artist, but as a human being as well. We are a fashion magazine, so tell us about your fashion style. The fashion world has always impressed me. The truth is that I was lucky having the godfathers of fashion dressing my shows such as Giorgio Armani, Jean Paul Gaultier, Paul Smith, Narciso Rodríguez and Dolce Gabbana. What are your favourite brands? I love Yves Saint Laurent, Tom Ford, Gucci, DSquared, Christian Dior, Armani and Balmain. So many… Is fashion an important part of your life? Yes. I believe what you wear is really important. In a way we are selling image, we have to have a defined personality and style, not only when you get on stage but when you walk down the street. Is it true you broke Naomi Campbell’s heart? I’m not going to talk about these things because I do not like talking about my prívate life. There are things that have happened in my life that I don’t deny, but I like being tactful about my personal life. How does it feel to be known as the most famous flamenco dancer in the world? Above all, it is important that through my work we are taking our flamenco culture worldwide. I believe this is the message that we take with us wherever we go. Do you still get nervous before you go on stage? There is still a tingling in my stomach and there are some nerves, during those five minutes before I go out on stage. I think it’s necessary because it shows you’re alive and still worried about giving a great performance. It shows you still feel a lot of respect for the audience and I still want to give all that I have. This feeling makes me want to continue as an artist. How do you feel once you are onstage in front of an audience? I feel as if I were alone in my room with them undressing my body and soul for them, revealing my true personality. It’s like suffering a metamorphosis everytime I perform. What does word flamenco mean to you? It’s a way of living, a way of feeling and a way of communicating to the world through our culture and way of life.

HOW TO BE A SUMMER

FLIRT

Finding the perfect man is all about sending out the right signals – take dating expert Kate Mulvey’s tips on getting the technique down to a tee Recapture Your Inner Child

Feel Good About Yourself

The essence of flirting is about radiating confidence and feeling good about yourself. And there is a good reason for this. When we feel confident we give off a positive energy, that is like a magnet attracting people to us. Of course, more often than not, our inner spirit gets buried under layers of shopping, work and all the other daily hassles that we have to deal with. Summer is a good time to step back from the everyday grind and give yourself some quick confidence boosts. You need to appreciate yourself inside and out. Stand in front of a full length mirror

Good flirts are playful, and have a sense of fun and adventure. If you want to find your inner-playfulness, ditch the grim, I’ve-had-a– hard-day-expression, and recapture your inner child. Children live entirely in the moment, unburdened by the past or worry about the future. Do something childlike each day, run barefoot along the beach, play frisbee in the surf. Take a new perspective on life, and see it, not as something you have to deal with, but as a new adventure.

Get A New Look

Whether it’s a dramatic new haircut or dying your hair strawberry blonde, buying more daring clothes or even a luscious lipstick, a summer makeover is one of the best ways to get into a full on flirting mood. Changing your look or just indulging in a bit of “me” time can

If you want to find your inner-playfulness, ditch the grim, I’ve-had-a–hard-day-expression, and recapture your inner child. and find five things that make you feel good about yourself. Take note of your physical attributes (eyes, lips, hair, legs, smile) and your style (hairdo, clothing, stance, make-up). After all, emotions guide our actions, so if you feel good, you will act in a positive way.

make you feel special and more adventurous. Have a mood lifting massage or pampering spa treatments, enough to make anyone feel sparkling. Get a “result” outfit together. Some things will make you feel sexier than others, and when you feel sexy, you look sexy. TRÈS CHIC 57

Make A Diva Entrance

Before you walk into a party/bar/dinner, stop and take a few deep breaths. Make sure your posture is good and that you have a smile on your face. Look around as if it’s your party: this will give you an air of confidence and relaxed control. The most magnetic people are immediately identifiable by the fact that they greet everyone with a warm, smile. You don’t need to have a naturally cheerful manner, it is about making an effort. No matter how you are feeling, if you can manage to feel a warm smile, it is the first step to developing natural magnetism.

Be Friendly

We always think of flirting as hair flicking, lip licking come-ons, but you know, the most successful flirts are people who make other people feel comfortable. In other words, you may look great, but if you are sending out “Im panicking” signals, you will push people away. Send out open, friendly body signals, that say, “Come here. I’m approachable and easy to talk to.” Sitting up straight with a relaxed posture shows that you are having a good time and are interested in people. If you are standing, uncross your arms and keep your palms facing upwards. If you send out friendly signals, then you will get friendly messages back.

Send Some Sex Signals

It’s summer after all, and everyone is feeling that bit sexier. Show a bit of flesh, buy a backless dress, shoulders are highlyerotic without being an overt come on. Let the straps of your dress fall down from your shoulders, ditto a cardigan,

Get Out The Giggle Pin

There is nothing more attractive than a woman who is laughing out loud. It lights up her face and acts like a neon sign flashing, “I’m a woman who is fun to be around. Laughter draws people to you, and when you laugh with one another, a positive bond is created. Of course, we can’t all feel like Joan Rivers every day, but you can build laughter into your life. Set aside a “funny” time each day. Read a humorous book; watch a film you know is guaranteed to make you laugh. Laughter makes you feel great, and leaves you feeling revitalised.

Be A Charmer

Charm is seduction without sex and a potent flirt technique. The method is simple. All you need to do is deflect attention from yourself onto the other person. Simply try to understand their spirit, match their mood, and make them feel great. Ask questions about their lives, pepper the conversation with supportive statements such as, “uh huh”, “yes I see”,and “how interesting”, it will soften them up and they will drop their defences.

Be A Tease

Teasing shows you have a sense of humour and helps everyone relax. The next time you are in a group, tell a funny/risqué story with some gentle innuendo, it will engage people’s attention. Introduce a gentle tug of war to get a bit of chemistry going. Disagree with what someone says, it will make them a bit anxious, and as soon as you are charming again, they will mistake it for affection. Disappear at some point – about 10inutes will do. It will give people time to miss you

Before you walk into a party/bar/dinner, stop and take a few deep breaths. Make sure your posture is good and that you have a smile on your face. Look around as if it’s your party: this will give you an air of confidence and relaxed control. let you shoe dangle from your toe. Have you ever seen a Hollywood actress play like a sex kitten? Try sending out some attractive body language signals (subtle, non-verbal cues) that say, I’m sexy and glamorous. Try the Glamour Pose: Arch your back to emphasise your bottom and flexibility (signals youth) and push your breasts forward. For added sex appeal, bite your bottom lip, play with your hair and look smouldering into the middle distance. It may sound corny, but like many obvious things it works, after all the Hollywood divas have been using it for years. 58 TRÈS CHIC

and they will wonder where you have gone.

Deal With A Put Down

Of course, not everyone is going to be putty in your hands. There are a lot of people out there who are unhappy and waiting to put you down. You can’t do anything about them, but what you can do is make sure you don’t fall for their behaviour. If you find yourself on the other end of a toxic put down try not to be defensive. Often someone will put you down because they feel inadequate. If you show you are hurt they know they have hit a sensitive spot and feel they have won. Keep your sense of humour and laugh at yourself. It shows that you are not affected. Or simply walk away. TRÈS CHIC Relationships

MADE in CHELSEA

Can romance ever survive across the class divide? As the dating pool of eligible bachelors get smaller and smaller, writer Kate Mulvey dates her very own gamma man

“‘Come ‘ere my posh princess,’ he would say, pulling me towards him, and revealing a tattoo of an EAGLE ON HIS BICEP. It was a bit like having a holiday from myself and my usual kind of life.”

“Alright gorgeous,” a cockney voice said. I spun round to see a tall man in a Levis shirt and jeans leering down at me. Part Grant Mitchell, part Alfie, he was handsome and rugged with a builders suntan and a cheeky grin on his face. Before I had time to say something withering in reply, he plonked himself down, leaning in just enough, so I could smell his cheep cologne. His name was Gary, and apparently he knew my friends brother´from somewhere along the coast. He managed to get my number, within a few minutes. And after a couple of weeks we began seriously dating. Whatever made me start down the road of romancing someone from the other side of the tracks, I am not really sure. I had never dated down before. But then, I had just come out of a tricky relationship and I was flattered by the attention. But it was more than that. Gary was different to anyone I had met before.

Compared to my usual public school dating fodder, with their high octane lifestyles, he was a breath of fresh air. Down to earth and honest, at first it was easy to see the attraction between us. He seemed to be everything I was not. He would laugh at my foreign films and we would end up watching Bruce Willis in Die Hard. Ok so he hadn’t read Proust, in the original French, actually he hadn’t read at all, and he left school before he took his o’levels. But he was witty and street smart. In the evenings, we would sit on the veranda, “Come ‘ere my posh princess,” he would say, pulling me towards him, and revealing a tattoo of an eagle on his bicep. It was a bit like having a holiday from myself and my usual kind of life. Romancing across the class divide can hold a sort of exotic appeal. The chemistry between working class lad and posh chick is all about the other. Instead of dinner parties, we spent our time in his local pub, in Marbella . Permanently welded to the upholstered banquettes, me with a fizzy water and him with his beer and whisky chaser, I felt like I was on a film set of Eastenders in the sun. And more often than not a physical fight would break out. TRÈS CHIC 77

Instead of avocado salad with seeds, (rabbit food according to him) we were eating chips with everything and he drank beer by the bucket load. Whilst all these things seemed to be fun whilst we were in the love haze, the things that divided us became more and more significant. For a start, it was difficult trying to adapt to each others different social circles. His idea of a good night out, was watching football, (he was a Fulham supporter). I cringed every time he came home wearing his replica Fulhamshirt with a six pack of lager in one hand and cigarette in the other. So what is the answer? Should we all be swapping our type A investment bankers for a muscled bound plumber who can whisper sweet nothings and fix the loo at the same time? Or is it just a bit of a giggle and fun whilst it lasts? According to psychologists, whilst men have traditionally married down. 40 years ago, when men were better

I remember taking him to a friends dinner party. As soon as Gary stepped into the plush apartment with the expensive art on the walls, I could feel his whole body stiffen. He was out of his milieu and we both knew it. He felt emasculated, and in an effort to flex his masculine muscle, he morphed into a caricature of himself. He drank too much, challenged one of the men to an arm wrestle (which of course he won) and made an awkward pass at the hostess. Everyone forgave his social faux pas, but he and I knew that this was the beginning of the end. The point is, if opposites initially attract, what at first was appealing becomes irritating to each other. For a start, we laughed at different things. He watched Only Fools and Horses, I liked Fraser. I resented the way he mocked my friends, saying that they were ’poncy’,and whilst I had once loved his cockney banter, I now found it boring. And there were so many no go con-

And for good reason. It may sound brutal, but there is no romance for a woman in marrying below her social status, and can bring all sorts of simmering resentments. And we were a case in point. In the end we both knew it was doomed and we agreed to part amicably. The other week, as I sat on a veranda soaking up the sun on a weekend break in Rome with my advertising executive boyfriend. I felt, firmly back in my romantic comfort zone. “Darling,” my partner said. Turning towards me, his mop of byronesque curls falling over his eyes.“We’ve been invited to a cocktail party in Piazza Navona.” Now that is what I call romance.

ummer heat is here so it is time to put on that bikini again and head for the beach. Are you feeling confident in your skin or are you putting yourself on an emergency diet? Hopefully, your decision to change your eating habits actually comes from a desire for wanting to be healthy and feel good – not just look good. The physical results come following the habit changes. Get ready to be healthy, looking great and feel happy and confident! So what’s the secret formula? The magical answer to everyone’s prayers? The quick fix, tricks and tips? Ok, here it is…drum roll please… Commit to long-term goals to change your habits and attitude towards your body’s health. Even a baby-step goal is a good start. I will, of course, give you some suggestions to help guide you towards a healthier body and lifestyle. It is important to have a place to start. And the “finish” or goal is total balance. Try a new method this year: Think of changing your habits for your long-

90 TRÈS CHIC

When you commit to your personal goal of balanced health, there should be no feeling of deprivation or intention to starve yourself. Just the word “diet” has a very negative connotation for many of us. Think about the health benefits you will experience and the physical results of feeling less puffy, more energetic and fit. Let me first explain to you that the body has many functions it has to perform every day without even being asked: draining, breathing, beating, communicating, digesting… the list goes on. The body sometimes needs a break! The organs, intestines, lungs and other areas in the body get “congested” and inflamed from working overtime. Extra energy is spent in trying to process old antibiotics, built up toxins and heal unrepaired tissues. All while you’re working away throughout your day! Magic I know. This is why we feel sluggish, puffy and no matter how many times we stop eating those biscuits, we still can´t get rid of that muffin top effect in our favorite jeans. It’s actually not the biscuits; it’s the build up of toxins and residual waste that create inflammation in the intestines and give that muffin its top! Just as you have to change the filters of your car, your body´s filtering systems must be cleansed as well. Imagine what extra energy you will have when you do a bit of a healthy cleanse or what is also known as a detox.

NO FASTING NECESSARY

Think Cleanse! You don’t have to fast to cleanse the body (although taking a break from food is a great practice one day a week to keep the digestive fires burning). To get the inertia going, but not required, I suggest the 5-day cleanse by Young Living Essential Oils. It has proven effective with my clients to cleanse the body and shed unwanted kilos in a healthy manner. The 5-Day Nutritive Cleanse™ facilitates gentle and effective cleansing to improve

overall health and well-being. This nutritive cleanse includes an energising, replenishing, whole wolfberry nutrient infusion, a high quality, super food energizer and nutritive powder, and softgels, which soothes gastrointestinal discomfort and supports healthy digestion. In some eastern philosophies, it is said that food should be taken as medicine. The body is treated as a temple. And just as you would polish and clean to keep a temple sacred, you should keep the body clean too. For this reason, in Ayurvedic Medicine the body is treated without antibiotics and balance is restored to the body and the mind.

La Posada Sacristia proves that there is so much more to Tarifa than wind turbines and surfing – there is luxury too!

TRÈS CHIC Travel

It took a long time for my most stylish friends in Marbella to convince me that I was missing out by not taking a trip to Tarifa. Like so many other misguided visitors to the south coast of Spain, I was under the impression that Tarifa was only a place for kitesurfers and hippies, and not really a place for anyone without a wetsuit and a lump of board wax. What I didn’t realise is that Tarifa is a place of contrasts. One day you can see the landscape of Morocco as clear as a bell and the next it is so hazy you’d never guess that Africa is just a 35-minute boat ride away. On some days the wind blows so hard that kitesurfers make a beeline for the beach from as far away as Malaga, while the next day children play happily in the sand without so much as a gentle breeze to ruffle their hair. The vibe in this atmospheric and laid back beachside town changes from street to street and from building to building. One minute you feel like you are in a typical Spanish pueblo and the next you could be in Africa. This is Tarifa’s magic formula and unique appeal. Everyone who visits Tarifa comes for a different reason. Yes, there are those who are here solely to take advantage of the magnificent beach and surfing opportunities, but then other people

“I was under the impression that Tarifa was only a place for KITESURFERS AND HIPPIES, and not really a place for anyone without a wetsuit and a lump of board wax ”

come just to enjoy the unique sensation of being at a crossroads between two cultures. If you want to go down the hippy route and camp close to the beach then it can totally tick that box. But if you want to go in for a more glamorous experience and enjoy a luxurious break in sophisticated surroundings then we have the place for you! Posada La Sacristia is Tarifa’s best kept secret. This beautiful, 10-room, boutique hotel was originally a dilapidated 17th century private house that was lovingly restored to its former glory by the current owners – one of whom is an architect and the other a chef. The refurbishment, which took two years to complete, is so sensitive to the original features of the house that when you walk in the hotel you still walk over original Tarifa stone floors and mosaic tiles. Authentic Roman pillars line the inner patio area, which is illuminated by spotlights created from Moroccan copper trumpets hanging from the ceiling. Despite its historic roots, La Sacristia retains a chic and contemporary feel, which is achieved through a choice of cool, neutral colours on the walls and a minimalist aesthetic throughout. The combination of antique, Asian, Spanish and Moroccan influences hang together TRÈS CHIC 95

effortlessly giving the hotel an eclectic and distinctive style that only someone with an amazing eye for design could pull off successfully. Although La Sacristia is only 50 metres from the main street, which is bustling with busy bars and shops, it maintains a calm and tranquil quality that makes you relax as soon as you check in. Each of the 10 rooms within the hotel has its own personality and character depending on the size and the shape of the space it is in. In an old house like this no two rooms are the same, which must have been a challenge at the time of conversion. What is consistent throughout the hotel is attention to detail, from the bowl of oranges decorating a tiny recess in the main staircase to the vase of fresh flowers on the reception desk. As well as the 10 rooms in the main hotel, La Sacristia has also expanded with luxury suites that sprawl over several floors in other converted houses around the town. The advantage of these suites is the extended space that guests can enjoy as well as the extra privacy. Each one has a unique selling point; a funky staircase; a contemporary, free-standing bath;

amazing views of Africa; stunning, modern art. Take your pick. Whichever one you choose will find something that takes your breath away. All of the suites are located within easy walking distance of the hotel so they still benefit from its excellent service and facilities, including the in-house massage room, which is located at the very top of the hotel and has amazing views over the rooftops of Tarifa. La Sacristia’s piece de resistance is its restaurant. The passion and attention which is lavished on the hotel by the owner who did all the design, is equalled by the other partner who runs the kitchen. Dish after dish of fresh produce are sent out to the dining room to the delight of inhouse guests and other visitors to the restaurant. We recommend trying the seared tuna. Tarifa is the biggest exporter of fresh tuna to Japan, and the tuna that isn’t exported to sushi-land is served in local restaurants such as La Sacristia. There is nowhere in Tarifa that does it better than here. A new addition to the hotel is a small designer boutique that has been created by style guru, Anette Lundgren. Recently back from a buying trip to Paris, Anette has filled the store with covetable fashion and accessory brands that bring a fresh shopping perspective to Tarifa. What La Sacristia manages to achieve where other boutique hotels often fail, is the ability to combine its individual character and atmosphere with all the little luxuries you’d expect from a big five-star chain: fresh, fluffy towels; large, comfortable beds and pillows; and attentive service. After a night at La Sacristia I had to admit that my Marbella friends were right, Tarifa definitely is the place for me and I didn’t even get my toes wet. Eating is a quest we strive for three times a day, however when dining at Jack’s Brasserie this Summer - The quest stops there. “One of the very nicest things about life is the way we must regularly stop whatever it is we are doing and devote our attention to eating”. Luciano Pavarotti

There is never a truer word said, and to enjoy that eating is a quest we strive for three times a day, however when dining at Jack’s Brasserie this Summer - The quest stops there. With a sumptuous Summer menu, you are spoilt for choice with dishes such as: Thai Spiced Crab Cakes with a Mango and Lime Mayo, Devon Mussels Steamed with Local Cider & Streaky Bacon served with Wholegrain Bread, or, as my guest and I chose on this particular July day; slow cooked shoulder of lamb, olive crushed potatoes, with a courgette tomato and basil broth, and Exmoor blue, poached pear and rocket tart, served with roast walnuts, red wine and a rosemary reduction. Both these dishes had immense flavours that were somewhat of a shock to the taste buds. The tenderness of the lamb, coupled with the delicate basil and perfectly cooked courgettes, and the taste of the olive crushed potatoes led us to believe they must be local, with a delicious texture. A wonderful mixture of Sunday roast flavours with the delicate execution of a master chef. The Exmoor blue married beautifully with the subtle tang of the poached pears, set off by the crunchy walnuts and sweetness of the red wine reduction. The

dishes showcase the best of light summer dining, and deliver deep and complex flavours in an array of simple dishes by this fantastic harbourside restaurant. The mood in Jacks is also distinctly different, with a real emphasis on service and the customer experience, we were treated to English Strawberry’s and Clotted Cream and a smile to finish our meal, except the waitress wasn’t the only one smiling, for that meal fulfilled our hopes and our belly’s - along with the sentiment of Pavarotti. If you want to party in Marbella the obvious destination is Nikki Beach. Famed for its decadent atmosphere and amazing DJs, this glamorous beach bar and club attracts a jet set crowd from around the world. It is the first place people think of when they are planning a night out on the town with their friends, but not necessarily the first place people think of when they are planning to go out for dinner. Only those in the know, realise that Nikki Beach actually has one of the most eclectic and value for money menus around town! Surprised? We were! When the Nikki Beach team invited us over for dinner, we really had no idea what to expect. Our last experience of the club was dancing the night away to banging tunes at the opening party surrounded by 1,000 other revellers, not sitting under the stars being serenaded by a live flamenco guitarist playing over the top of laid-back, chill-out sounds. What a contrast! Relaxing to the mellow vibe, looking out over the sea and enjoying the sound of the waves crashing on the beach, it was hard to imagine this was the same place we last saw people dancing on the tables in white bikinis. Dinner at Nikki Beach has a different vibe altogether. Of course, it still incorporates all the quintessential Nikki Beach qualities: 100 TRÈS CHIC

amazing service, stylish décor and a sophisticated crowd, but the atmosphere is far more conducive to enjoying an intimate dinner for two or with a group of close friends. The biggest temptation, without a doubt, is to come to the club for a day on the beach and bring a change of clothes so that you can segue seamlessly from day to night and stay for dinner. A number of our fellow diners had cleverly planned just this and made us very envious as they sat down for dinner looking tanned and relaxed. We soon got in the mood with a couple of cocktails – after all you can’t come to Nikki Beach and not try the infamous Nikki Beach Mojito. We also couldn’t resist the June Sparkle – Grey Goose vodka infused with pomegranate, strawberry and pineapple juice topped with chilled Mumm Champagne. Now, that’s what we call a cocktail! Our next big surprise of the evening came when we served the hugest starter portions we have ever seen. We were so shocked that we even had to ask the handsome restaurant manager, Julian, if there had been a mistake and they’d brought us main courses by accident. But, nope, he reassured us that these stomach-busting dishes were indeed our entrées. Despite the hearty-sized portions, we quickly polished off the loin of tuna in nori seaweed, which was dipped in tempura and served with a light watermelon and wasabi sauce, and the wagyu beef roll. We even ate the edible pansy garnish that sat on top of the tuna. If it is a light dinner you are after then a couple of the Nikki Beach starters would easily fill you up. However, we’d recommend the full Monty as what came next couldn’t have been more enjoyable. Having been pleasantly surprised by the generous-sized starters, we should have been prepared when a plate of BBQ baby back ribs the size of a house were placed in front of us. Not one but two racks of foot-long ribs are served up per person – and boy, you would need the appetite of a sumo wrestler to munch your way through them all. We took the challenge and gave it a shot. Finger-lickingly delicious and succulent (thanks to a secret marinade that chef, David Farber, wasn’t willing to reveal), we demolished most of the ribs and even managed to finish off the polenta, cheddar cheese and jalapeno chips, which are an innovative alternative to run-of-the-mill potato chips. At just 24 euros, this dish is astonishing value for money. By the end of the ribs we looked and felt like sumo wrestlers, but we still had two dishes to go. The grilled filet of beef in a crust of wild mushroom gave the carnivores

Little Italy

A tale of the family history of the Botta’s and the creation of Bottelino’s, sharing how they came to bring authentic Italian cuisine to the hearts of the South West. There aren’t many Italian restaurants in the South West that have a story that leads us back to their family kitchen in Salerno (Southern Italy), a restaurant chain that provides a bona fide Family History and a warm hearted story almost as good as the food. 106 TRÈS CHIC

Clockwise from left: The Grand opening of the Portishead Marina restaurant, The majestic view of the the new outdoor terrace; The flavoursome Misto di Pesc Risotto; and the chef ’s hard at work in the open kitchen. You can see the preparation & smell the flavours before your dish hits the table!

Bottelino’s restaurant chain has been serving authentic Italian dishes since 1978, but, how did it begin? Bottelinos founder Giuseppe Botta and his wife Maria lived in Laviano, a small village just outside of Salerno, Italy. Giuseppe was a fond cook, and both he and his wife had natural skills in the kitchen, both adoring the Italian traditions that had been passed down by generations. Giuseppe worked in a Factory, and Maria tended to the home and in 1965, he decided to move his Family to Bristol, for a better life, bringing both sons Mike and Raf with them. A big move for this lovely Italian Family, and a journey that would prove to be one of the best things they could have done. They settled in to Bristol in the area of St Pauls, and were blessed with a third Son - Gino. Giuseppe continued his factory work in Bristol, during the day and would then work in a restaurant in the evening, it was here that he trained as a chef and in 1978 he was able to open his first restaurant in central Bristol. Giuseppe didn’t stop there, he went on to open restaurant’s in Bath, Cheltenham, Nailsea AND Emersons Green, unfortunately Guiseppe passed away in 2001, but, his Son’s carried on with the Family Tradition by opening further restaurants in Bedminster, Swindon, Weston-Super-Mare and most recently Portishead in 2010. Over the years the Bottelino’s Family have maintained the high standards originally set by Giuseppe and Maria, and continue to deliver exceptional Italian dishes, just as they would have been back home. TRÈS CHIC Art

CHINA DOLLS The art of Cui Xiuwen highlights the continuing fragility of women’s position in Chinese society. Born in 1970, Cui Xiuwen has become an internationally recognised conceptual photographer and video artist. Her work has been shown at the International Centre of Photography in NY. It has also been collected by the Pompidou Art Centre in Paris. In 2004, she became one of the first Chinese artists to host a show of her work at the Tate Modern in London. This summer her work will be shown in Marbella at Poligono Gallery’s “Masters of Chinese Photography” exhibition. The exhibition will be running from the 8th of July to 15th September. Since 2004, Cui has been working on photographic montages, made up of photographs that she takes and manipulates on a computer, printing them on a large scale. In the series “Angel” on display at the gallery, Cui Xiuwen uses adolescent girls and the subject of pregnancy to make a powerful critic of a patriarchal society treating women as commodities. “I want to express female’s process of growing up,” Cui says, “I put adult mentality on a teenage girl, I think that what the girl bears is as much as a woman’s growth and build up.” The girls in the pictures seem dwarfed by their surroundings, lost and vulnerable. The allwhite schoolgirl uniform adds to her virginal appearance. There is a sense of isolation of the figures from each other and they appear with their eyes closed, “No longer wishing to see the outside world, reality, nor to be confronted by it or to have to deal with it,” she explains. The golden palatial roof tiles, red and grey masonry walls remind us of the Forbidden City in Beijing, alluding to the imperial dynasties and their patriarchal agenda. Women in general have been outsiders in Chinese society, especially in traditional culture. Sold into other families as wives, concubines, courtesans, and maids while still young, they lost all chances of a normal life if they became pregnant without being married. In today’s China they are still subject to the patriarchal conventions of the past

and the on-going preference for male children that results in the abortion of female foetuses and the subsequent reduction of the number of women in China. In addition, government policies restrict child bearing, and pregnant women wanting medical care often need to have a pregnancy certificate. There is a surprising contrast between the poetic and mystical figures of the girls, unavoidably erotic “Lolitas”, when in the artist’s hands they are actually speaking of exploitation, and the isolation of the exploited. The critic is powerful yet the final result is subtle, with harmoniously balanced arrangements of colours and shapes. This contrast is typically used by Chinese artists. Cui disavows any feminist agenda. She maintains that her subjects, though apparently female, represent the whole of society. The make-up of the girls, with its reddish blotches around eyes that mark the whitened skin, suggests underlying bruises. And so beyond the fragilities, insecurities and social problems of adolescence, we question ourselves what concealed scars we carry. Cui Xiuwen hopes we can become more conscious of them so that we can maybe transcend them. The fact of observing the wounds can help us heal them. Glee stars not leaving – It was only recently that Glee creator announced that the main stars of the TV Show Lea Michele (Rachel), Chris Colfer (Kurt) and Cory Monteith (Finn) would be leaving the show in the fourth series after their characters graduate at the end of the upcoming third run. Glee bosses stated that it wouldn’t seem realistic if they were to stay on at school. However, it seems that they have changed their tune or realised they don’t want to lose out on more money and Emmy awards by getting rid of the people that make Glee a success. They are now insisting these stars have NOT been axed, adding, “They’re graduating – but that doesn’t mean they’re leaving.” Season three hits our TV screens later this year! I’m sure we will be seeing a Gleetastic tribute to Amy Winehouse in the newest season. Jennifer Lopez divorcing husband but committing to American Idol! Shock was the word to describe the news that Jennifer Lopez and husband of seven years Marc Anthony are getting a divorce. With headlines still swirling about the reason behind the split, stories have included infidelity on his part and, according to one source, his negativity about everything, but it’s Jennifer who has a smile on her face as she is set to land a £21million deal to return to American Idol as a judge next season!

King of Pop passed away, and it’s been two years of gossip and headlines about a tribute concert. Only now Michael’s family have confirmed that the “Michael Forever Tribute Concert” is scheduled for October 8 at Cardiff’s Millennium Stadium. His Mum Katherine told reporters, “This is a world-class event so I decided to join in. When I was told about the possible line-up I knew it would be an event fit for a king. Performers for the event are expected to be announced early next month and tickets are due to go on sale on Wednesday, August 3.

Katie Price trying to get even more press – What this woman won’t

do to get press I don’t know! This month it’s trying to break a Guinness World Record for the largest book signing. To break the record, Price will have to beat former world chess champion Anatoly Karpov, who signed 1,951 copies of his book in eight hours in 2006. Katie will be signing her latest Novel The Comeback Girl. TRÈS CHIC 109

Cheryl’s life. My theory is she’s still in love with Ashley but is scared to take him back (who can blame her, once a cheater always a cheater plus the scrutiny of the public). Personally I think she and Simon are fine; at the end of the day business is business. As for the UK X Factor it will be a flop without both her and Simon, and they will both make guest appearances once it’s aired. Let me know your thoughts at www.treschicmagazine.com.

Celebrity of the Month: David Beckham. Golden Balls Mr David Beckham himself is forever showing the world why he is close to being Mr Perfect. With most men wanting to be him and most women wanting him, the birth of his fourth child and first daughter just brings him that much closer to becoming perfect! Harper Seven Beckham was born July 10 and David Beckham has been walking on air since. David has recently joked that now he has a daughter he needs a shotgun. Adding to his incredible month he has recently been picked to play in the MLS All Stars game against his beloved club Man United. Most recently the Beckhams announced that they will donate their new born daughter Harper Seven’s baby gifts to charity. David has been happily Tweeting the world pictures of his beautiful girl and most recently his cooking skills, making us say “YUM”.

SHOCKING HEADLINE FILLED WITH GREAT SADNESS.

Another lost voice gone too soon. It was Saturday July 23 that the music industry fell silent when the news that Brit star Amy Winehouse had been found dead in her home. Amy Winehouse was a legend in her own right. Her voice silenced millions and her actions made millions of headlines. The star has been a path of selfdestruction ever since the release of her No.1 mega hit Rehab. She had been troubled by drink and drugs problems throughout her career but they escalated in tandem Jennifer was recently spotted celebrating her 42nd birthday with friends. All in all, apart from her divorce, 2011 has been a good year for Miss Lopez!

“Woman of the Year”

Rihanna has been named “Woman of the Year” by Vogue Italia. Rihanna was awarded the title

for her charity work, music career and for dealing with difficult issues in her personal life. Vogue Italia posted on its blog, “Independent, energetic, the young Robyn Rihanna Fenty (only 23 years old) is our woman of the year and not just by virtue of numbers and figures but also, and foremost, for her kind and fighting spirit.” Rihanna has just finished her “Loud” Tour in the UK. Congrats to Rihanna, 2011 is looking like a great year for her!

The latest on Miss Cheryl Cole.

I don’t think anyone really knows what is going on. Is she getting back with Ashley or isn’t she? Will she will be returning to the UK X Factor or won’t she? Who is she dating? Is she friends with Simon Cowell again? So many questions and a shed load of headlines all of which reveal very little about what is really happening in 110 TRÈS CHIC

Amy won a BRIT award for Best British Female Artist;

with her success. Born Amy Jade Winehouse on September 14 2011 and she was just 27 years old when she passed away. Known for her powerful contralto vocals and her eclectic mix of musical genres including R&B, soul and jazz, Amy was well respected and loved by her peers. Amy’s career may have been short but it was filled with incredible accolades, including nine Grammy nominations and five wins for her album Back to Black tying with the then record for the most wins by a female artist in a single night, and made Winehouse the first British female to win five Grammys, including three of the “Big Four”: Best New Artist, Record of the Year and Song of the Year. In 2007, she won a BRIT award for Best British Female Artist; she had also been nominated for Best British Album. She won the Ivor Novello Award three times among other distinctions. The album was the third biggest seller of the 2000s in the United Kingdom. It is Amy Winehouse who was credited as an influence in the rise in popularity of female musicians and soul music, and also for revitalising British music. Singer Adele recently posted on her blog saying, “Not many people have it in them to do something they love, simply because they love it. With no fuss and no compromise. But she knew what she was capable of and didn’t even need to try. If she wanted to do something she would and if she didn’t she’d say f**k off. “It came easy to her and that’s why we all loved her so much. We believed every word she wrote, and it would sink in deep when she sang them.” Adele added, “Amy paved the way for artists like me and made people excited about British music again, while being fearlessly hilarious and blasé about the whole thing. I don’t think she ever realised just how brilliant she was and how important she was, but that just makes her even more charming. Although I’m incredibly sad about Amy passing I’m also reminded of how immensely proud of her I am as well, and grateful to be inspired by her. Amy flies in paradise.” Amy had an amazing voice and music career, however, it was her problems with drug and alcohol abuse, violence, and her self-destructive behaviour that were regular tabloid news from 2007 until her death, sometimes overshadowing her extraordinary talent. Russell Brand recently described Amy as “A genius”. Amy was laid to rest in North West London on Tuesday July 26, friends including Kelly Osbourne and Mark Ronson attended. Winehouse joins the notorious “27 Club” of musicians who have died at that age after struggling to cope with fame. They include Rolling Stone Brian Jones, who drowned in a swimming pool in 1969; guitarist Jimi Hendrix, who choked to

Committed - A Love Story

By Elizabeth Gilbert Most of you will have read Elizabeth Gilbert’s best seller Eat, pray, love and if you haven’t then you’ve probably seen the movie starring Julia Roberts and Javier Bardem. Committed picks up from where we left things in Eat, pray, love. Elizabeth Gilbert meets and falls in love with a dashing Brazilian man named Felipe, and having both gone through horrendous divorces they have solemnly sworn never to get remarried. But fate has other plans for these two. The US government gets involved and Felipe is banned from re-entering the USA. The only way for him to return and for them to be together is to swap vows and get married. Committed is a skeptical piece on marriage and a compilation of all Elizabeth’s fear and doubts on the subject. While effectively in exile, and waiting for Felipe to be able to return with her to the USA, the two of them spend a year in South East Asia, time which she spent researching and going through all her questions and doubts on marriage. The book is split into eight chapters, each chapter looks at one aspect of marriage, including the history of marriage, the surprises marriage brings, the impact of marriage on women, autonomy, subversion and many more. Whilst reading you can almost see and understand her train of thought, and understand how she dealt with her issues. Issues which, if not all, most of us will at some point on a larger or smaller scale, have to deal with. As a young woman in a serious relationship but not yet married this “self-help” book was very eye-opening and informative. Questions and doubts, which I didn’t even know I had, were not answered as such, but helped me to form a stronger idea on the tricky issues that surround all relationships. Why will you enjoy this book? Because it’s eyeopening!

of what she went through when she was younger. Within these pages we get a glimpse of what everyday life was like for Jamaican slaves living on a sugar plantation. Although the story is set in a time when having slaves was the norm and then in the consequent years of emancipation, the novel is not just about slavery, it is the story of a woman’s life and the years and experiences she lived through. It’s about her family, her lovers and the people she met along the way. The author explores not only the horrendous and inhumane treatment which Jamaican slaves endured, in fact she does not even dwell on these issues, her main focus is on the culture and society which evolved during and because of these times. Andrea Levy is also the author of Small Island winner of Whitbread Book of the year and the Orange book prize for fiction. Why will you enjoy this book? Because the style in which the novel is written is utterly captivating.
