EDITOR´S Letter

Spring has well and truly sprung and as the world is starting to look a lot brighter and more hopeful, we have rolled out a new, wonderful issue for SS12! “What’s new?” I hear you cry. Well, following London Fashion Week and the buzz of the global stage, we have been swept into a frenzy with the excitement of the up & coming fashion fixtures for the South West this Spring. Did you know that Bristol Fashion Week at The Mall Cribbs Causeway is just around the corner? (21st25th March). It’s quite a fashion story for our region and allows us all the chance to be styled by the stars with the lovely advice from Mark Heyes, personal stylist to the likes of Lorraine Kelly and Lady Gaga. Not only will he share with us what is hot and how to wear it, but, we can then head straight to shop it was selected from to snap it up right after the show! We are also soon to be treated to Bath in Fashion, a week long festival of fashion and style. This includes the wonderfully regal designer show by Amanda Wakeley, talks from such greats as Manolo Blahnik, and films like Beyond Biba introduced by Barbara Hulanicki, the style icon behind the Biba label (23rd March-1st April). If that is not enough Tres Chic are also preparing for the fabulous Cabot Circus fashion shows between 21st-22nd April. Where we welcome back the gorgeous JP, and look forward to looks from the cream of Cabot Circus - Tres Chic are clambering to view the Harvey Nichols S/S show in particular! Mother’s Day is also nearly upon us, and with that in mind you may like to head up to Hill Road, Clevedon, the location for our splendid 1950’s Fashion Shoot (all with looks from The Mall Cribbs Causeway). Whilst visiting why not take a look at our new swanky studio, where you could treat your Mum to a makeover and photo-shoot by the Tres Chic team! What could be better!? Oh yes, I know, maybe a fab offer from The Sanctuary Spa or a special competition to win Front Row Tickets to BFW!? As always, it’s all inside!

Spring / Summer

TREND FORECAST

TOUCH

Tactile heaven. Whether it’s broderie anglaise, flapper fringing, embellishments or lace, the feel of fabric is important this season. Look for a material or finish that brings something else to the table, as well as the cut or colour. Embellishments like lace and fringing take us back to the 1920s this year, but with a modern twist.

Jonathan Saunders

Phillip Lim

WATERCOLOUR

Summer becomes mouth-watering this year, with yummy colours like orange sorbet, lemon sherbet and rosy apple, giving a sweet and delicious look – good enough to eat! The subtle, sugar pastels give a feminine, clean palette. Wear together or with white, or toughen it up with a rock t-shirt and dangerously high heels for a cute and candy appearance.

ABSTRACT ART BIBA £115

Jack & Lazaro of Proenza Schouler call it ‘mid-century road-stop architecture’, with looks that command the wandering eye of an art-lover but, whilst moving on the form of a female. It’s abstract art, inspired by the Bahaus school and a kaleidoscope of colours. From Gucci, to Marni & Hermes, simple functional lines take the fore, and if there’s one name on everybodies lips this season, it’s Mary Katrantzou for mish-mash prints inspired by all that is enviably eccentric and most of all flattering & fun. FLOWER SHOW

316 beauties bloomed wearing floral prints on the S/S catwalks, and with that in mind it’s time to weed your wardrobe! It’s not the obvious kind of bouquet though this season, with florals colliding and cascading down the thorough-fare it’s simply a question of how to wear them, without looking like you’ve rolled out of your Nan’s cupboard (no offence Nan!) . With everyone from Peter Pilotto, to Christopher Kane and Proenza Scholuler rocking floral prints, take a word from the wise: Don’t wear them if they’re not big and brash, and this season .. it’s ok to clash!

TRÈS CHIC Promotion

If you really can’t tear yourself away from the convenience of the car why not car share with a friend, neighbour or colleague going your way. Even if you only do this once a week, you will soon be surprised at the impact on your fuel bill, and just think of all those little treats you could have! You could make a significant impact by using the excellent Park& Ride facilities across the region. There are loads of spaces so you don’t have to worry about the stress of driving into the city and finding a parking space. The buses use the priority lanes so you whizz through the traffic and avoid the jams. Has the New Years resolution to go to the gym now worn off ? Why not combine your good intentions to get more active and lose weight with a more active commute … if your journey is short, why not walk to work and discover your local environment at a different pace? Or for longer distances or more fast paced activity, why not get that bike out of the shed and get that beach body faster? If you are lucky enough to be able to work from home this has the result of taking one more car off the roads so take every opportunity to do so during the challenge, and you could even win a prize for doing so. Q&A

Style Guru Lisa Jayne lifts the lid on a wardrobe staple that’s been around longer than fashion itself

Q A

I love my jeans I wear them all year round but want to invest in a good pair or do I go for a new denim piece that will take me through to the autumn?

The denim look is back, washed out and distressed looking. This season there is so much to choose from, jeans, waistcoats, shorts, jumpsuits and denim skirts. The denim waistcoat is a great key piece for this season, layer over your favourite printed or plain T shirt and team with a short floral skirt. Great for weekend walks along the beach. Denim shorts look great with a silky vest and a sequined style jacket or cardigan, or wear a floral blouse and soft knit cardigan for the pretty girl look. Or go for shorts with a vest and military style jacket, combining casual with dressy. Another look that can take you from day to night teamed with a shoe boot or gladiator heels. Treschicmagazine.com I MARCH 2012 22

The denim jump suit is back, and worn with ankle sandals is a great outfit for the summer. Always look to show off your curves so draw in waist with a fabulous belt. I believe accessories finish any outfit. Watch the cut of your jeans, you need to wear a shape and style that suits your body shape. There is a huge choice on the market. Boot cut is best for most of us as it elongates your legs and can be worn with boots or heels. The skinny is great with heels if you are slim and have good legs. If you have a large bottom or wide hips go for minimal pocket detailing as these draw attention to your problem area. Watch out for the height of the rise, you don’t want to show your underwear and a low rise can cause a slight tummy bulge, so go for a mid rise. Sometimes going up a size on the waist helps. Distressed jeans teamed with a t-shirt or blouse in flesh colours with an embellished jacket, will be fabulous with metallic sandals for day or the new shoe boots for evening. You could be adventurous and roll up the hem of your jeans for a casual look.

I feel less pressure to dress youthfully. I’m 50 and everyone knows I’m 50 - who are you kidding? Jeans are my uniform. I have about 15 pairs. Michelle Pfeiffer

MH: Well Lorraine appreciates people who work hard, and I guess that’s how I came to enamor myself. You couldn’t hand my job to anyone else and with that comes a great deal of lessons. Lorraine has taught me a lot over the years, and especially not to go to the opening of a crisp packet! That has been vital! Also, that we are lucky to be in our position. She is also a great, great laugh to work with. JB: What are her fashion loves? MH: She is obsessed with shoes! I often pick up great shoes for her from New Look. She absolutely adores Betty Johnson (the designer who cartwheels down the runway of NY FW!) or anything in orange... In homage to Dundee United! JB: Tres Chic are excited to be covering the eagerly anticipated Bristol Fashion Week this year. What is it to you Mark, that makes it quite so special? MH: Everything that goes into it would shell shock anyone! Literally as one season ends there’s about a one week break, and then they start again. London Fashion Week is all very straight laced with the obvious fashionista’s, but at BFW it really is incredible to see so much theatre, brilliant models, dancing. It’s an impressive production in its scale and is a different class. People get so much inspiration and ideas from our shows there, and taking a note book is pretty important! Although, you can always get a question back stage if you need to. JB: Tell us about the amazing make-over competition. What happens to the lucky lady? MH: Well, it’s all about styling a real woman, making her feel special. We come down a week before and take her around the shops. It really is my favorite part of styling! It’s simply amazing seeing their confidence grow, and then watching them strut down the catwalk! It’s thrilling styling for the Oscars but, nothing gets your adrenalin pumping like a real-woman style! JB: If you could style one celebrity, who would it be and why? MH: Wow! Umm, it’s got to be Penelope Cruz, she is just breathtaking, oh, and Thandie

Mark Heyes gives us the low-down on Bristol Fashion Week, a ‘must-see’ in the South West this Spring/Summer! JB: You are watched by millions on ITV and have Celebrity clients such as Lorraine Kelly, Cat Deeley and Lady Gaga, how did you get from humble style status to such an enviable position? MH: I worked really hard! From the age of 17 I knew I loved art and design. I began studying at the grad school of art in Scotland, and mid way through I was lucky enough to change direction from my original course to study fashion illustration. From then on I managed to work closely with the local papers; The Herald & The Daily Record, because you know, when you would say to people that you were a Stylist back then, they immediately thought hair stylist! There weren’t many of us around, I could count maybe four in the whole of Scotland! From my time with the papers I then went on to do a small pilot show for Channel 4, called ‘Shes Got To Have It.’. It was a wild new world, compared to what I was used to in Scotland, dealing with PR & Marketing agencies, all with different ways and expectations. From the pilot show it was then that I was asked to do the Lorraine Kelly

Newton. Both such beautiful flawless women. Apart from when Penelope Cruz wore Armani Prive to the Bafta’s, you would think Penelope Cruz and Armani would be a great combination, but, all I kept thinking was ‘you look like a theatre chair!’ Take a look at the pictures, and you’ll see what I mean! I did meet Penelope Cruz once at a party at a famous house in Hollywood, we got in through a side door and by going through the kitchen as waiters, but that’s another story..! (Find out more at www.treschicmagazine.com) JB: Tell us some gossip, what’s it like working with Lady Gaga? MH: Mental! She’s as mad as a box of frogs! It was when she first came to London, and no one had any idea she was going to be such a mega-star! I chose the looks from all the designers, and pushed the big pants look, and she picked what she liked. All her LA posse were interesting, they kept asking if we accepted dollars or euros in London? It was difficult to explain to them that we accept pounds, I don’t think they understand much outside their LA bubble! JB: Who to you are true style icons of today? MH: Definitely Kate Blanchett, she is always flawless on the red carpet and pushes it to another level. Whether in Balenciaga, Givenchy or Couture, she always rocks it. Of course Sarah Jessica Parker, I know that’s an obvious one, but I interviewed her once and she was so genuine, so nice. She’s not afraid of fashion, and wears it with integrity, although I wasn’t a big fan of the turquoise tights, but we’ll let that go! In the interview I complimented this beautiful ring she had on, it was a raw stone, covered in diamonds. She turned to me and said “I want you to wear it for the whole interview!” she, even said at one point that I was her style icon! That didn’t harm my career! JB: What are your stand out trends for SS12? MH: Scarf prints as seen by D&G and Etro. It’s the last season of D&G you know, and will then be known as Dolce and Gabbana from now on in, so, it’s quite a milestone year. Of course you cannot do any copyright on scarf print either, it’s been in circulation longer than D&G so, it’s a really easy look to replicate on the high street. There’s also a wave of cobalt blue, which is going to be massive, much like the colour you would expect on a Moroccan wall. Also, tribal prints, and the statement trouser. Great to wear with simple nudes, and heels. The 1950’s look is coming through heavily, with Prada working this trend a lot. Rockabilly and prom looks are going to be massive, and officially without a shadow of a doubt pastels are going to be massive, with some washed out neons too. If you want to be really savvy, there is also a lot of play on looks from the essence of sea. Think sea creatures, shells, star fish, mermaids and coral. There’s a new take on nautical looks. JB What are your top tips on getting the most out of the Bristol Fashion Week experience? MH: I love that people really go for it with their look and styling, they make a day of it and dress up to the nines. I would say start the day with a coffee at Carluccios, and browse some of the looks before the show. Each item in the show has a swing ticket and they sell out fast, so be sure to take a pad, and refer to your scene list, which is on your seat. As you arrive there is a gorgeous cupcake and glass of fizz from Marks & Spencer’s and really all that is left to do is sit back and relax and enjoy it, of course if you get platinum seats you get to enjoy the hand picked male models, up close and personal too! AMANDA WAKELEY Understated, alluring and at Bath In Fashion

Amanda Wakeley has been nominated as Guest Designer for Bath in Fashion 2012. She plans to bring her London Fashion Week Spring/Summer ’12 show to Bath for a stunning catwalk show in the art deco Ballroom at the Forum on Thursday 29th March 2012, sponsored by CircleBath. Amanda Wakeley will be on hand for a Q&A session after the show. Amanda intuitively started designing based on a personal passion to create utterly beautiful clothes that women love to wear; women who have included Angelina Jolie, Scarlett Johannson, Demi Moore, Charlize Theron, Kate Winslet, and recently the HRH The Duchess of Cambridge. The winner of numerous awards, including three British Fashion Awards for Glamour, Amanda was honoured with an OBE three years ago for her outstanding contribution to the British fashion industry. The Amanda Wakeley Woman’s daytime style is luxe sportif, while evening is contemporary glamour. Modern, simple, comfortable clothing made only in the best fabrics, the look is calculatedly understated but alluring... making the woman the best she can be. The Spring/Summer 2012 collection takes its inspiration from the New York socialite Nancy, Lady Keith... better known as Slim. Her look is strong and independent... a combination of sexy, outdoorsy, chic and athletic; a long, lean and tawny “California girl”… healthy, shining and golden. She had a Treschicmagazine.com I MARCH 2012 52

talent for individuality: unique without pretense, and everything about her seemed accessible and attainable. The clean, contemporary silhouettes have an emphasis on relaxed, tailored dressing. Vertical, continuous drapes that move in the summer breeze create fluidity, which is contrasted with tough bridle leather accessories, while graphic prints are inspired by summer shadows. “I first went to Bath when I was about 12 years old and I absolutely fell in love with it. I love the grandeur and the balance and the symmetry of a lot of the architecture in Bath,” said Amanda. “We’re doing a catwalk show at the Art Deco Ballroom in Bath, which is wonderful for this collection as there is so much deco inspired embellishment. We’re really re-running the September Spring/Summer 12 catwalk show, so we’ve all the styling of a London Fashion Week show replicated for Bath.” Bath in Fashion celebrates style from top to toe with an action-packed line-up that includes two of British fashion’s most famous names, shoe designer Manolo Blahnik and milliner, Stephen Jones. Don’t miss stunning catwalk shows, including guest designer Amanda Wakeley; workshops by textile artist Karen Nicol and Julian Roberts; Vintage Sunday, featuring Pearl Lowe; talks by design and fashion legends Matteo Alessi and Roger Saul and Rosemary Harden, Manager of the Fashion Museum; and films like Beyond Biba introduced by Barbara Hulanicki, the style icon behind the Biba label. denim desire No need to roll the dice on denim any longer, with Mimi Noor’s step by step buying guide.

Shopping for jeans is usually the most stressful, time consuming and disheartening experience. Jeans are not only the most useful, trans-seasonal and sexiest item in your wardrobe, they’re also known as one of the most unforgiving, which is why it’s so important to get it right. Mimi Noor specialise in jeans, so they are highly consultative and work with each customer to work out not only what styles suit your shape, but also what works best for your lifestyle.

Pear

This is the most common shape. Pear shapes actually suit most styles of jeans, depending on footwear. For a casual daytime look with flats try a pencil leg (skinny leg that skims over the ankle bone and doesn’t cling to it). This style from Goldsign (Goldsign Misfit £240) looks fantastic on most women and works perfectly with flats, and great in the summer rolled up with a pair of sandals - a true all-rounder! These also look great in the evening with a heel.

Treschicmagazine.com I MARCH 2012 54

For a different look try a skinny flare to show off the narrowness of your knees, and the wide flare gives a real lean look to your hips and torso. This style from MiH (MiH Marrakesh £150) is perfect for that formal evening look and makes a great alternative to a LBD.

high rise

skinny flare

pencil leg

Curved back

Most brands have started doing a midrise style as a standard which is great, but if you find you get gaping at the waist when the jean fits you on the thigh, then you should consider a high rise jean. These from Nobody (Nobody Cult skinny £160) are such a great option. The denim is quite rigid so they really pull you in and they’re a really sexy high rise that will glide over your hips and nip in at your waist.

TRÈS CHIC Promotion

I wish I had invented blue jeans. They have expression, modesty, sex appeal, simplicity - all I hope for in my clothes. Yves Saint Laurent

If you are proportionate but struggle with length and find that the washes on denim start and end at the wrong points on your leg (because they’re supposed to be on the thigh) - opt for an ankle grazer in a block or consistent colour. This style by James Jeans (James Jeans twiggy £175) is perfect for a petite girl and the patented back pocket darts on the pocket act as a Wonderbra for the bum! This style will also look great if you’ve got an athletic build as the pockets will give you a great curve. If this particular style is too short for you, try the 912 from J Brand which will give you the added inches.

Apple shapes often struggle with jeans the most. The best style is a straight leg generally in a higher waist. This style from J Brand (J Brand 814 high rise) flattens the stomach and the slim leg will narrow the legs. Many people make the mistake of thinking that if they wear something loose on the leg it will work best, but it does the opposite - it adds weight. Try a cigarette leg (narrow straight leg) over a skinny and in the evening add heels to lengthen those legs. Alternatively, try a high rise baby-boot in the evening. James Jeans do great options in this shape if you like a change from a straight leg.

I’m not a real ‘designer’ fan, however I love the obvious ones such as Mulberry, Topshop (Ashish is my favourite!) and Burberry! I have some vintage Burberry trousers I can’t wait to rock soon! Four key pieces you will be rocking this summer, and how to wear them? Bustiers: teamed with vintage shorts and pretty skirts Pastels: I never really wear pastels but I’m slowly falling in love! Brights: I’ve been too scared to try bright colours but I can’t wait to channel these in S/S12! Sky high heels: I love shoes at the moment, and have been buying them in large quantities! What has been your biggest Hype on Lookbook, and why do you think it was such a hit? My biggest hype was my ‘Jar of hearts’ look and I think it was because everything was vintage and bustiers are such big hit with fashion bloggers as they are ridiculously difficult to pull off! The satchel bag was also only 50p from a car boot - unreal! Are there any style icons which inspire you? I have all the usual suspects as style icons, people like the Olsens and Alexa Chung, but nothing gives me more inspiration than other bloggers. Lookbook.nu is genuinely where I find people that inspire me the most and really ‘get’ what fashion is all about.

Meet Kavita Donkersley, a 19 year old self taught fashionista with high aspirations to own a boutique with her unique eye for all things vintage. She is effortlessly stylish, and likes to dabble in a bit of garment DIY. If anyone knows how to turn heads and keep an audience scrolling for more it’s Kavita and her enviable wardrobe. Tell us about how Fashion came into your life and how this led to the creation of shewearsfashion.com. My mum used to own a vintage shop, and we’d go to car boots every Sunday as a child. I became interested in fashion at 16 when I started my blog - and it all started from there! Instead of scouring the car boots for things like crappy old teddies and little soap sets for £1, I started looking for the vintage stalls, and how I could cut up some old trousers into lovely little vintage shorts and all for 50p! What is your favourite high street brand/shop, and why? I mainly love vintage and second hand, but when I do shop on the high street, Zara and H&M are my favourites. There basic pieces team with EVERYTHING and they fit perfectly! I am also a fan of Topshop. Who are your three top designers on your SS/12 hit list? Treschicmagazine.com I MARCH 2012 56

Eye Power shone throughout the Milan AW catwalks, with D&G, Emilio Pucci and Fendi all showing how enthuses on the eye can be as striking as the outfit itself. If WOW is your aim, then aim high with the ‘baby doll’ lashes. You can create this look by applying a few layers of black mascara to your lashes (we love Blackout by Dior £22) and before they set, squeeze together small sections using your fingertips. Want it more spidery? Apply layer after layer of mascara (no limits here) and apply the same action, the more lumps and bumps the better. If we were allowed a statue in the office of the best British Fashion Icon, it would be of Alexa Chung. After recently returning to her roots of Modelling, the always preppy Alexa is forever in the public eye. Simone I find the most wonderful thing about Alexa is her effortless chic and this shows in her make-up too. Her make-up style never changes, a little of everything in the most natural of colours is key. A combed brow, minimal eyeliner and a rosy pink lipstick. She has this pinned down, so why change? Tip. The perfect brow is the structure to any persons face, to keep it natural and in place add a clear wax pencil. Try New Cid London Cosmetics i-fix eyebrow pencil £13.50 James Pure style with her choppy bob which is brought to life with a dip dye colour through the mid lengths and ends, fantastic! (tip) It’s all about being styled to look un-styled so try Label.M Miracle Fibre for long lasting texture and separation.

RIHANNA

Queen of the stage

With Rihanna’s Loud Tour adding over 20 dates to their original schedule, Rihanna really is Queen of the stage for 2011. From her locks to her toes Rihanna rocks the boldest statements in Fashion.

Spring Cooler

Simone With her makeup Rihanna loves to focus attention to her sumptuous lips. Whether it is red, pink, matt or gloss her lips are her ultimate accessory. Her foundation is always to a Matt finish and Rihanna likes to use natural tones of peaches, pinks and browns around her eyes with lashings of black mascara. Tip. To achieve Rihanna’s ultra glossy lips add a strong pencil line blended half way into the lips and max out with gloss in a shade lighter. Try M.A.C’s Lip Pencil in Synch and Tinted Lip Glass in Pink Lemonade.

With warmer temps just around the corner and a brilliant wave of colour about to wash over our wardrobes, it’s time to freshen up your palette, with tempting new looks to help you step in to Spring with a little bit of sass, and whilst remembering your mittens!

James Rihanna´s volume and bright red colour choice is really what turns heads! (tip) Pump up the volume with a combo of Label.M Thickening Cream and Volume Foam.

Finding out your health score:

When I attended my appointment for my MOT I felt it was natural to be a little apprehensive. At age 30 I was a little daunted, and I can imagine it be more so to someone in their ‘Autumn prime’. I’m blessed to have a fast metabolism (like my Mum), but even at 30 I’m concerned about ensuring I stay fit. For someone who doesn’t go to the gym, just walks and cycles, and someone who enjoys the finer things in life, I imagined there would be some room for improvement. On meeting my Wellbeing Advisor I realised I was in good hands and she was not there to judge me, simply provide a thorough insight into my health. Treschicmagazine.com I MARCH 2012 64

46/100 A lady who likes fine restaurants and a nice glass of Chardonnay, with no need to watch my weight, my diet choices are normally high fat; red meats, great cheeses and creamy sauces. I’m not a fan of scrimping on quality, but, whilst that might work for handbags, the full fat options on food only lead to one thing.. high cholesterol. Now interestingly on the surface I do not look unfit, or like I need to be more conscious of such things, without the health check, I would simply never have known my cholesterol was high, a dangerous thought. Just because you are a ‘skinny-mini,’ doesn’t mean that you won’t have health concerns to watch out for. What did I learn: A couple of basic things, like did you know that hydration is good for blood pressure? Or that drinking more water actually increases your metabolism? Did you know that eating porridge actually brings cholesterol out of the system or that smoking also effects cholesterol. This may be second nature to some health-savvy chaps, but, to me this was news, and news I will take away with me to implement changes. The next step now is my free personal training session that will look at the areas I wish to improve on to make me a fitter, cholesterol free and more fabulous me. And with a guarantee that if your score hasn’t improved after 3 months, you get three months free! I’ll keep you posted dear readers, but, don’t wait for my results, it’s 3 months until high summer, time to think about your own.

You can expect to be in your appointment for up to an hour and go through a series of non-invasive tests that determine your ‘health score’. Starting with height and weight and moving through to reading your glucose levels and cholesterol (two things that are not offered as standard by your GP). Nuffield Health use a range of technology that looks at your body mass index, your aerobic fitness levels, and your hip to waist ratio, delivered in a way that allows you to feel supported and empowered, in the knowledge that Nuffield Health have the solutions to help you improve. It’s not a medical with a prescription at the end or a worrying outcome, the prescription they provide is information and practical steps. Following your free health MOT, you will be given a health score between 1 and 100. This is used to track your progress against a bespoke set of fitness and lifestyle goals, and if you would like another health MOT in three months or further down the line, Nuffield Health will happily oblige. Better still, if you maintain or improve your health score after your 2nd health MOT, you’ll be eligible for their get healthy, get fit, get rewarded programme offering rewards worth at least £100, including, among other things, class passes, a personal training session and a free month.

Chic About Town

What’s All The Buzz About?

Condense one hour’s exercise into ten minutes? Famed by A-Listers and proven to increase muscle tone and conditioning, Power Plates are all the rage in celebrity circles and to those in the know. You would however be forgiven for disbelieving such ‘fangled technology’. This Month dear Tres Chic readers, ‘Chic About Town’ provide some lid-lifting and myth-busting with some of the most exciting services the South West has to offer. With the sensibility of London and rolling country side, it really is a no-brainer as to why we live here. ‘Chic About Town’ is dedicated to helping you get the most out of life enriching venues, treatments and products, and this month we say hello to Power Plate technology with a ‘secret’ new location to experience it with. Body Management, the premier gym in Clevedon has offered Power Plate workTreschicmagazine.com I MARCH 2012 72

According to a recent piece in Tatler, a former Royal Ballet soloist informs readers that ‘the secret to a youthful physique is a pair of lean legs, and exercise on the Power Plate - vibration plate will help you get there. Holding ballet poses while being exposed to the vibrations helps accelerate results, toning thighs and shaping lean legs.’ Wow! Well that certainly makes me want to dust off my pink tights (not necessary on a Power Plate!). Bring on the slender legs, and start to make an impact on the wobbly bits (of which there are many since I turned 30!).

Where did the Power Plate technology originate?

Vibration Training was originally a concept developed for space travel. Since there is no gravity in space scientists had to develop a way in which astronauts muscular and skeletal systems could be challenged or worked in order to ensure no loss of muscular strength, power, and flexibility.

What to expect?

The vibrations generated in the machine create an overall increase in blood flow and circulation. More than just an exercise machine Power Plate offers the capacity for whole body massage to enhance relaxation by passively stimulating blood circulation. Healthier bones, stronger core-strength and overall fitness. Results achieved in around 6 minutes.... need we go on? Notes to the health-savvy: Tres Chic would like to announce the opening of a NEW Power Plate gym in Portishead Marina, just 10 minutes from Bristol with fantastic links to the M5. TOP SECRET LOCATION Focusing on drop in sessions of advanced training in blocks of 10, it really is time to work smarter, not harder and join the Power Plate generation. For more information on our secret Power Plate gym & classes contact jodie@ treschicmagazine.com to register your interest. You will receive an email with location details once released.. Work-in-Glass Exhibition Work-in-Glass is a group of artists coming together to inspire, create and exhibit beautiful glass art. The group met at Bristol School of Art in 2008 where they were all training under the tutorage of renowned glass artist Milly Francis. Having completed two years there, Bristol School of Art discontinued the course and the ten artists then faced an uncertain future. The group then decided to move en masse to Creative Glass Guild in Bristol, and continued their training there with Ms Francis still at the helm. Around this time the group approached Clevedon Pier with regard to its beautiful exhibition space in the Tollhouse, and the forthcoming exhibition began to take shape. All ten artists have created brand new pieces for this event, with the inspiration behind it coming from the estuaries of the British Isles. One of the artists Lee Dodds has said “ We are delighted to be exhibiting in such a unique space, we are very excited about this event and we hope that as many people as possible will come and see our work.” The exhibition will be held during the whole of April 2012 at the Tollhouse, Clevedon Pier and is free to all. She had her first museum solo show at the Contemporary Art Center in Cincinnati in 2010, and has made numerous appearances since then ranging from the Gallerie Yvon Lambert in Paris, to the San Gimignano, Siena, Italy. She uses modern, society-based issues such as desire, religion, notions of security on the street and on the imagined border. Gupta uses these taboo issues to challenge the common thoughts evoked by these themes. After already displaying her work in renowned galleries such as the Guggenheim in Bilbao, and the Tate Modern her visit to Bristol is definitely something that is not to be missed. The artist has already scheduled a discussion session for the Saturday 3rd March, but has promised other dates too. So keep a look out here for all the latest news about Shilpa Gupta’s first appearance in the UK, this spring.

ASPARAGUS IN EGG AND LEMON SAUCE SERVES: 4 Ingredients

675g asparagus 1 tbsp cornflour 2tsp granulated sugar 2 egg yolks Juice of 1 1/2 lemons Salt

1. Trim the asparagus stalks, discarding the tough ends, then tie them in a bundle. Cook in a tall pan of boiling, salted water over a medium heat for 7-10 minutes. 2. Drain well, reserving 200ml of cooking liquid. Untie the asparagus stems and arrange in a shallow serving dish. 3. Put cornflour in a small pan. Stir enough of the reserved cooking liquid to form a smooth paste then stir in the remaining liquid. Bring to the boil, stirring constantly, and cook over a low heat until the sauce thickens slightly. Stir in the sugar then remove the pan from the heat. Set the sauce aside until it cools slightly. 4. Beat the egg yolks with the lemon juice. Gradually stir the mixture into the cooled sauce. Cook over a very low heat, stirring constantly, until the sauce is fairly thick. Immediately remove the pan from the heat and continue stirring for one minute. 5. Taste the sauce and add the sugar or salt if needed. Let it cool slightly, then pour a little over the asparagus. Cover and chill for at least two hours before serving the rest of the sauce.

ALL-IN-ONE LAMB ROAST

APPLE SIMNEL CAKE

2.2-2.3kg lamb shoulder 1.2kg large waxy potatoes, cut into wedges 3 red onions, peeled and cut into slim wedges A handful of rosemary sprigs Extra virgin olive oil 3 heads of garlic, tops cut off 25g unsalted butter, plus an extra knob 500g spinach

1. Heat oven to 210c (190c fan) gas mark 7. 2. Cut slits all over the lamb and stuff each one with rosemary. Drizzle a little oil over and season with salt and pepper. 3. Toss the potatoes and onions with approximately 2tbls of oil and season with salt. Arrange these with the heads of garlic in a large roasting dish that holds them all in a single layer. Put these in the oven with the lamb on a rack above and roast for 1 1/4- 1 1/2 hours, stirring the potatoes and onions halfway through. 4. Transfer the lamb to a warm plate; loosely cover with foil and leave to rest for 20mins. Remove the garlic, but return the potatoes and onions to the oven. 5. Melt the butter in a large pan over a medium-high heat; add the spinach, cover and cook until it wilts, stirring now and again. Transfer to a food processor, discarding any liquid in the base of the pan. Squeeze out the insides of the heads of garlic and add to the spinach with a knob of butter. Season and whizz to a coarse puree. 6. Carve the lamb, adding any juices given out of the spinach puree, and serve this with the potatoes and onions as a little vegetable sauce.

1. Heat oven to 220c (200c fan) gas mrk 7. Lay the pastry on a large baking tray. Roll out the marzipan thinly so it is slightly smaller than the pastry sheet. Brush the pastry lightly with 1 tbsp of the conserve and lay the marzipan on top. Turn the pastry edges over very slightly. Sprinkle the ground almonds over the marzipan. 2. Slice the Pink Lady apples very thinly and scatter haphazardly over the marzipan. Sprinkle over the 25g of sugar. Bake for 20mins; or until the Pink Lady apples are tender, and the pastry golden and risen. 3. Meanwhile, mix the remaining conserve with 1 tbsp of calvados or brandy (or use water). Press through a sieve and thin down with a little water if needed. While the tart is warm, brush the Pink Lady apples and the pastry edges with the apricot glaze. 4. Lightly whip the cream with the remaining calvados or brandy, if using, add the 23 tsp sugar to taste. Serve with the warm tart.

up to Lahloo Pantry for a bespoke modern tea room experience. We met up with our favourite local tea expert, Kate Gover, to discuss everything Lahloo and more! See below to find out what’s in store for the Bristol tea company and how Kate likes her tea and coffee…

Lahloo Pantry

At Lahloo, we source from the best artisan producers from around the world who take the time to hand pick and hand process.

With over 30 loose leaf teas on offer – from green and oolong to black and pu-erh – Lahloo Pantry is fast establishing itself as the hub of artisan tea endeavours in Bristol. The brainchild of Kate Gover of Lahloo Tea, Lahloo Pantry positions itself as a very modern tea room, bringing the time-honoured celebration of tea into the 21st century. And very modern it is. With a backdrop of cool white accented with clean lines and splashes of bright Lahloo red, the tea mecca does more than just scones and biscuits. The Pantry’s seasonal menu features a selection of light breakfast, brunch and lunch choices like muesli with apple, honey and sultana, and roasted red bell peppers stuffed with quinoa. For traditionalists, an afternoon tea is on offer daily from 3–5pm for £13.50 a person. Go discover unusual teas from around the globe with names like White Whisper and Grandpa’s Anytime Tea and learn about the subtle differences between each brew with the Lahloo infusionists. Sit up on a stool in the upstairs communal table or find a seat in the cosy café downstairs with your cuppa. And if weather permits, unwind in the outdoors courtyard. Whatever you do, you won’t regret boycotting your usual Café Nero or Costa jaunt to head

TC: What is your favourite tea tradition? KG: It would have to be the Japanese tea ceremony. It’s probably because I have such a fond memory of it but also because the Japanese tea ceremony focuses solely on the tea. While I appreciate the traditional English afternoon tea, I find that it is often more about the food that comes with the tea. People are excited for the scones with the clotted cream and finger sandwiches, rather than the actual taste of the tea they are drinking. TC: If you had to pick one black, one white and one green tea from the Lahloo Tea range to recommend to our readers, what would they be? KG: For black, I’d go with Tajiri. It’s a Kenyan black tea that’s almost like an apple pie with custard. There is a toffee caramel-like creaminess to the taste. For white I recommend White Whisper. It’s good for people who think they don’t like tea. There is no bitterness to it; it’s very sweet with a hint of apricot. For green, try Sencha. It’s different from what most people here would associate with green tea but that’s why it’s great. It’s fresher and more vibrant than your usual green teas bought at a super market. TC: What is your favourite treat to eat with tea? KG: A simple short bread or a madeleine. TC: Do you drink coffee? KG: Yes. Just because you’re a tea drinker doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy coffee too! I love a good espresso. Lahloo Pantry 12 Kings Road Bristol BS8 4AB Tel. 0117 329 2029 www.lahloopantry.co.uk Treschicmagazine.com I MARCH 2012 85
