Any new enterprise that opens will never quite be sure of which direction the business may go or what exactly it is that will define the shop or premises. Now 8 months after opening its doors in Hill Road La Maison has gone from strength to strength along a route it had never really anticipated. We had always enjoyed giving old furniture a new lease of life and we are delighted that this has become the major part of the business La Maison are able to offer. Our unique service of sourcing old tables, dressers, chairs etc (to match your dimensions) and then your choice of the finish and colour from a selection of our heritage and contemporary colours. Our range of farmhouse tables are our most popular pieces, as our customers love the timeless beauty of the old natural wood grain tops set off against the contrast of the painted legs and the fact that they can choose the colours from the woods samples we keep in the shop. We always carry a large range of furniture in stock but if we don’t have what you are looking for we will do our best to find it for you. 30 HILL ROAD, CLEVEDON, BS21 7PH . www.lamaisoninteriors.com / 01275 87 60 56

EDITOR´S

What a sensational first month following my relocation from Marbella. I suddenly realised that whilst I was conducting business in sunnier climes, I may be missing out on some fantastic talent, some exceptional brands, and all the vibrant people and fashion in the south-west. We’ve taken a bold step and have been amazed by the support we have received so far...This issue is packed with wonderful content from the Harvey Nichols Fashion Show, to the Cabot Circus extravaganza and the Vintage Fashion Auction in October. We bring you an exclusive interview and shoot with Britain’s Next Top Model winner Lucy Ratcliffe and our first ever UK fashion shoot, taken in an incredible rural setting for our take on Modern Heritage. We have a gorgeous piece on designer brother and sister Lauren and Michael Moshi, and are working closely with Bristol’s uber-cool designer boutique - Garment Quarter on their hot picks in the world of breaking fashion trends. Here at Tres Chic we are dedicated to connecting the beautiful people of the region with the places and products they crave and we have certainly done that in this issue with fantastic treatment from Ronnie at The Muset and No.38 The Downs. We are terribly excited too, with plans under way for our Black & Diamond Launch Party on December 9th! (Location to be released soon!) From all of us at TC.. Enjoy, and we’ll see you next month!

VIVIENNE WESTWOOD Balmain

Add some glitz to your holiday wardrobe by going all-out with some bling and bedazzle! This summer we are tempted by a trend most seen at Christmas time, but fear not a golden tan will also make this trend work in the sun! There’s nothing better than sliding off the beach and into a light-weight metallic number to make you feel evening-ready. From Calvin Klein to Versace the catwalks were a-wash with metallic in all sorts of shades and hues. Add a light dusting of shimmer to the face and a saunter in your walk, and this trend will add some va-vavoom to your style-stakes. Now what are they all looking at? Oh yes, my illuminating personality!

Forties Fixation

Full-throttle forties glamour is the order of Autumn and as our love of vintage reaches fever pitch in this country, this trend will put us in to over-drive. With a curtsy to all that is elegant we see designers such as Miu Miu, Prada and Jean Paul Gaultier surrendering to the intoxication of this bygone era. Trilbys, hem-lines strictly below the knee and with shrugs and furs a plenty, we are charmed into celebrating the Women of the day. Strong but feminine, sensual and endearing, I urge you all to dress with the care and attention of a satin-stocking wearing glamour puss. For instant Forties form, opt for a vintage blouse and pencil skirt, with a skinny belt and long gloves. *Cigarette holder optional!

In Sapphire, Amethyst, Ruby and Emerald, there is nothing more becoming than to drape yourself in the colours of the crown. The options are endless in sequins by night or tailoring by day, add some sumptuousness to your wardrobe with these stately pieces; you’ll be stopping traffic in no time!

Christopher Kane for J Brand Jeans

We knew back in February that Christopher Kane would be designing a capsule collection for J Brand jeans, and the pictures are finally out! The collection features an array of 70’s-esque bell bottoms and matching denim jackets in pastel tones. Kane also injected an essence of rock with his stonewash skinny jeans and at London Fashion Week his models were styled with slicked back hair and punky dark eyeliner. With J Brand jeans the go to brand for denim and a capsule collection created by Christopher Kane we predict this will be gone in seconds. From £190 November 2011 at www.harveynichols.com

GarmentQuarter stock the new McQ & Dries Van Norton ranges!

GarmentQuarter, Bristol’s exclusive boutique for brands like Vivienne Westwood and Marc by Marc Jacobs has started stocking McQ’s new range of womens wear and Dries Van Noten’s AW/11 mens line. The McQ collection, which sticks to McQueen’s classic punk influences, references a youth culture theme including tartan kilts, roughed up denim and school-girl blazers, with a pair of 80s inspired leopard print creepers that we crave already. Van Noten’s range of mens wear also references the 80s with David Bowie as the collection’s main inspiration. Sharp silhouettes, double breasted jackets and chic camel blazers are contrasted with biker trousers, bright white t-shirts and baggy cargo trousers in this collection based upon oppositions. Interview

Some people are put on this planet to be models. Lucy Ratcliffe, 26, is one of them. With long legs, amazing cheekbones and bee-sting lips her destiny was written in her genes from the day she was born. Amazingly though, it took years for anyone to convince Lucy to follow the path that was set out for her from birth. Despite being scouted not once but twice by Select modelling agency, she was still too shy to leave her home town in the North of England and enter the world of modelling in London. “The first time I was spotted by a scout was on a school trip to The Clothes Show Live at the NEC in Birmingham,” says Lucy, who was just 15 years old at the time. “We were in the queue waiting to go in when this guy just grabbed me out of the line and dragged me off to the Select booth. I spent the whole day there and missed all the show. My friends and the other kids on the trip were so jealous.” But instead of throwing in her studies and taking the first train to London, as most girls would do, Lucy hid every time the agency called her and told her mum to tell them she was ill. Unbelievably the same story unfolded the second time Lucy went to the Clothes Show, but again she was too shy to take up this golden opportunity. It wasn’t until Lucy was watching an episode of America’s Next To Model and saw an advert at the end of the episode asking people to send in an application for the first Britain’s Next Top Model show, that she decided to give it a go. “I was totally obsessed with America’s Next To Model,” reveals Lucy as she is having her make-up done in preparation for our shoot. “They said applicants had to send in a video so I decided to do something really

must have loved it because they asked me to go to Manchester for a live audition.” Despite a shaky start – she admits she hardly said a word at the initial live audition – Lucy got down to the last 12 girls out of 30,000 applicants and shooting of the series began. From that moment on, Lucy’s whole life changed. “It was crazy,” she says, “Being put on the spot in front of the whole nation every week is terrifying; especially for someone like me who is naturally quite shy. We were all so emotional and scared. We were living in a bubble; it became like life and death whether we were going to be thrown off the show each week.” Looking back now, Lucy can laugh about it. “I don’t know why we all got so upset. Working in the real world of modelling is just as tough. If you don’t perform you can get dropped in a second, after all it is a business not a nursery.” On the plus side, Lucy learned everything there is to know about working in the industry. “I am really grateful to the show,” she says. “To go through what we did on the TV, everything that came afterwards was easy. It prepared me for what was to come. If it wasn’t for Top Model, I’d probably still be in Newcastle doing

“If anyone says the word diet to me now, I immediately have to go to McDonald’s and have a burger” different. My mum’s house is a treasure trove of antiques and old mannequins dressed up in vintage clothing so my mum filmed me going around the house pretending to interview the mannequins. It was really whacky, but they 24 TRÈS CHIC

who knows what.” Working on the show, Lucy also met Lisa Butcher and Marie Helvin who were amazing mentors for the up-and-coming star.

Interview

“Lisa was as nervous as us,” laughs Lucy. “She’d never done any TV before and she was terrified too. Marie was an absolute gem. She gave me so much advice and even took me out for dinner the night after I won the show.” Of course, Lucy knew she’d won the series a long time before anyone else. The final episode was aired weeks after shooting and Lucy had returned to her regular job at a restaurant in Newcastle before it became public knowledge. Then, as soon as the news was announced, she was whisked off to London to live in a model flat in Chelsea with other girls from her agency. “The day after the last episode was aired the agency packed me off with an A-Z to find my way around London to my first castings. I really got thrown in the deep end,” says Lucy whose prize for winning the show was a contract with Models 1, a cover shoot with B magazine and a season as the face of Ruby & Millie make-up. Although Lucy didn’t take the most conventional way into the business, she soon became a successful model doing shoots and catwalk work for numerous brands, as well as winning contracts abroad. “I know it sounds glamorous, but I didn’t really enjoy working in other countries, to be honest,” says Lucy who found that life away from home and friends was lonely and challenging. The pressure was on her to constantly diet and at 5ft 11, she soon weighed less than nine stone. “When I came back from Milan, my mum said I looked like a skeleton. My hip bones were sticking out and I looked ill and skinny,” says Lucy who also spent a few months working in Athens. These days, Lucy stays in shape mainly through walking around London and running around after her eight-monthold baby boy, Tiger. “If anyone says the word diet to me now, I immediately have to go to McDonald’s and have a burger,” she laughs. “I used to do a lot of running, but since I have had Tiger I don’t have time.” We meet Lucy with her partner Amal Guessous who is Tiger’s dad and the owner A&G Rock ‘N’ Roll Couture boutique. Lucy has helped him build the brand and spends a lot of time working in the London boutique on Walton St where they regularly welcome celebrity clients such as Naomi Campbell, who is a big fan of the brand. She and Amal, who have been together nearly three years, had a whirlwind romance and have been inseparable ever since. “I met Amal through a guy who sold his clothes in London,” says Lucy, who is obviously still mad about her man! “We went on one date and the next day he asked me to go to Paris with him. Then we went to Cannes to hang out on his friend’s boat for a few days. We have been together ever since,” she smiles before revealing that they are planning a wedding sometime later this year, she reveals. Please don’t forget to send us an invite!

Interview

TEE TOTAL The brother and sister team that are setting the fashion world on fire with their art-inspired label, Lauren Moshi Finding the perfect tee can sometimes be a challenge. Too long, too short, too tight, too boring… Well, help is at hand thanks to Lauren Moshi, the Californian artist turned fashion designer who converted her hand sketched artwork into desirable fashion must-haves for Hollywood’s elite. Lauren’s tees combine quirky but well-fitting cuts (how does she manage that?) with ultra-luxe fabrics that are decorated with prints of her delicate sketches. What started out as a t-shirt brand has quickly expanded into a full-on fashion line including tanks, dresses, jackets, trousers and totes. And she couldn’t have done it without the help of her brother, Michael, who is the business brains behind the whole operation.

Lauren Moshi, the Californian artist turned fashion designer

Lauren Moshi Age: 30 Star sign: Pisces Michael Moshi Age: 27 Star sign: Gemini Have you guys always been close? Don’t you have the usual sibling squabbles? Lauren: From the day Michael was born, we were inseparable! Growing up with parents who instilled the importance of family in us, we have always had a special relationship making us a tight-knit brother and sister duo. Michael: Of course, we have our disagreements and bicker like true brothers and sisters do but we can’t stay mad at one another for long. You obviously make a good team – how does it work, what is the dynamic between you in the business?

Michael: Our shared values and individual strengths are the foundation to running our business. Lauren is the artist and designer, while I focus on the business side of things. Lauren, when did you decide to turn your artwork into fashion? And what made you decide to print your work on t-shirts and clothing in the first place? Lauren: I became obsessed with drawing from the moment I could hold a pen. Art for me is life and I love art as much as I love clothing. I wanted to combine the two and bring art into everyday life through fashion, so I teamed up with the perfect partner, my brother Michael. In 2006, we created a canvas for my art through our shared appreciation for quality fashion. What is it about your designs that makes them work everywhere from Manhattan to London to Lisbon? Michael: Lauren Moshi is for the fashionista who appreciates

TRÈS CHIC 45

authentic details and designs engineered using only the finest fabrics. Style mavens across the globe value the intricate detailing, lux quality and exclusivity. A look all about originality, the prints adorn an array of flowy and fitted silhouettes such as tanks, tees, dresses and sweats making it an effortlessly chic fashion fix for everyone. Who was the first celebrity to be spotted wearing one of your designs? And how did they hear about your brand? Lauren: Liv Tyler – she bought it from a store in Hawaii. You have quite a following of celebrity fans now, which one most embodies the ethos and philosophy behind your brand? Lauren: It is such an honour and compliment when we see Hollywood’s trendsetters step out in Lauren Moshi. There isn’t a specific celebrity that embodies the brand, because for us it is all about flaunting wearable art and creating your own style sensibility. Each celebrity does this in her own way, whether they are spotted dressed down going to the gym or in a fashion-forward ensemble for a night out. Is it true that lots of your fashion customers also have your original artwork hanging on their walls at home? Michael: Yes! With art being the focal point of Lauren Moshi’s collection, we wanted to provide our ever-growing fans with the artwork itself. Using Lauren’s unique hand drawings, we launched a division of artwork. Printed on canvas, the artwork is limited, numbered and signed by Lauren. Tell us how to put together the perfect outfit with one of your designs. Lauren: Rock the Camilla Triangle Front Drape Tee with a pair of denim cut offs, stacks of fun bracelets, a pair of uber-chic gladiator sandals, a Chanel purse, Lauren Moshi tote and designer sunnies. Lauren, what is your personal look for summer 2011? Shoe Therapy

It’s high heels all the way for Kate Mulvey who extols the virtues of wearing stilettos to improve your mood, your self-confidence and your chance of meeting Mr Right

“To date, I have a parade of stilettos in my wardrobe. There are my gold mules, bought last summer in Rome, and my Gucci slingbacks that are a guaranteed mood enhancer when I’m feeling down”

Like all women, I have a mystical belief in the power of the high heel. The sight of a pair of beautiful stilettos always makes my heart beat faster – whether it’s a pair of gold Jimmy Choo mules staring at me from a shop window or my very own satin Manolos, the pleasure hormones surge through my body. And the great news for all us girls who love to dance around in our five-inch stilettos: high heels are good for you. Did you know that wearing stilettos gives the leg a good workout? It shapes, it tones and it maintains the elegance of the leg. Actually, any shoe lover – and show me a woman who isn’t – could have told you that, because shoes are one of life’s greatest pleasures. My own love affair with the high heel began 25 years ago when I bought a pair of black, pointed ankle boots with a five-inch stiletto heel. I wore them with my shiny leather trousers and danced to Roxy Music. It was the late 80s and black patent

dominatrix spikes were all the rage. OK, so the shiny leather wouldn’t look out of place on a whip-wielding woman dancing round a pole but I realised back then, at the tender age of 17, that these shoes had a magical effect. I have been addicted   ever since. Whenever I slip on a pair of stilettos, it puts me in touch with my inner vamp: that part of the unconscious that contains our most basic impulses – to eat, sing and perform the dance of the seven veils at 3pm in the afternoon. To date, I have a parade of stilettos in my wardrobe. There are my gold mules, bought last summer in Rome, and my Gucci slingbacks that are a guaranteed mood enhancer when I’m feeling down. To me, all stilettos promise a flamboyant, extravagant lifestyle. I remember buying a pair of razor-sharp Stephanie Kelian silver heels in the early 90s. Like a powerful scent, they announced my arrival. Men swivelled round sharply as I clickety-clacked down the street or made my entrance at a party. So what is it about a metal heel that makes men salivate and women go to a chiropodist once a month? Since high heels were first worn by courtiers in the 16th century, the stiletto has always had a sexual connotation. TRÈS CHIC 49

In the 50s, when stilettos were at their height of popularity – along with cantilevered bras, tight sweaters and pencil skirts – they brought with them a new frisson of sexuality. When Anita Ekberg drank champagne out of her stiletto in the film La Dolce Vita, she wasn’t after a new taste sensation; warm leather and grape. No, this was a clear case of seduction, shoe-style. No one understood this more than Marilyn Monroe – she went so far as to have one heel made shorter than the other to develop her famous wiggle. Flat shoes promise practicality and efficiency; a sort of bright and breezy woman striding off to the office. Five-inch spikes promise glamour, danger and the kind of girl you wouldn’t take home to your mother. Let me explain. Once I have slipped into my spikes, you can forget walking down the street in a purposeful manner and get used to putting one foot tentatively in front of the other, as if you are not quite sure you will stay vertical. Poised high above the ground on a pedestal, high heels alter your bearing. I put them on and my pelvis presses forward, my shoulders are brought back, my legs are elongated and my bottom has no alternative but to rock from side to side in an unmistakable sashay. Tottering down the street in high heels also

“Marilyn Monroe went so far as to have one heel made shorter than the other to develop her famous wiggle” makes a woman appear vulnerable. As a male friend of mine said recently, “I love women in stilettos – it makes it harder for them to run away.” In other words, you look as if you can be hauled over his shoulder and dragged into his cave. Va-va-voom body language of a sex goddess in the click of a heel. Who cares if they cause bunions and cobble stones are the bane of your life – their assumed impracticality marks you out as different. Paying £300 for shoes that can be worn on only special occasions is the social shorthand for, “I am a glamorous, leisured woman with money who does not need public transport or to walk to her next party”. So go on, get out your inner starlet and walk tall.

Maffionista Evrim is a 20’ish fashion addict, a self confessed ‘dreamer and lover of life and chaos.’ She is effortlessly cool, breathtakingly beautiful and her only wish in the world is to attend a Chanel Show. A wish she is sure to achieve in 2012. By Jodie Brown

Content is king they say and in the world of fashion this is never more prevalent Over the last four years fashion bloggers’ have been regarded as more important than some of the best fashion editors in the world and absolutely influential. As the world of social media begins to overtake the power of traditional advertising, the fashion bloggers’ are turned to like a trusted friend, an insider and expert on their specialist field, and why the appeal? They are talking to, not down to you. She is not telling you what to buy in a dictatorial, billboard fashion, she is telling you about her own passion in an unbiased way, and not only that but how to wear it, with what shade of lipstick and in what context. This is gold-dust for the fashion houses and many of them have woken up to this innate power and are keen to influence the willful blogger. It is not unknown for the humble fashion blogger from Hackney to receive a Balenciaga bag or set of front row tickets to the most prolific show in a bid to sway their ever roving eye to the temptations of a particular brand. Take for example the young, Philippino lad, Bryan Boy, given front row for Dolce and Gabbana Milan. He is ‘just a blogger,’ but with a combined audience of over half a million and the power to drive the masses to the must-have with sell out success. He has taken a thirst for fashion and a touch of marketing savvy to re-influence the world of fashion he celebrates. 52 TRÈS CHIC

“Never under estimate the power of a GREAT outfit”

Tres Chic meet JP in an almighty Fashion Face-off for The Cabot Circus Fashion Show

The highlights of the Cabot Circus Fashion Show were many and apart from the stellar styling, pampering by Jo Malone, The Sanctuary and products galore, Tres Chic were lucky enough to meet the fabulous JP - stylist to the whole event, and what a time we had! From meeting at the House of Fraser VIP event we were instantly hooked on JP, with his infectious personality and charm he held our hand through the fashion experience Cabot Circus had to offer, with wonderful outfits from a host of Cabot Circus stores, from Ted Baker on Quakers Friars to Reiss, G Star Raw and Fred Perry to LK Bennett, River Island and New Look. Just like JP, the shows were jam-packed full of pure style personality! How did you get into fashion JP? I started about 8 years ago, I opened the VIP service in the flagship store of Miss Selfridge in London, and took on a diary and dealt with any press and celebrities that used to come in. You wouldn’t imagine that Miss Selfridge would need that level of service? 60 TRÈS CHIC

I think people expect that now, they didn’t so much back then. People were already obsessed with ‘celebrity’ then. Topshop had it working for them, and people expected that it was a service they needed to pay for, so, within that I was their personal stylist and then they rolled it out through the brand and I was then headhunted as a fashion buyer by a company in Canada and it was my job to forecast their trends, so I would shop for them and assist my clients on personal style. So, if I was head-hunted to be a fashion buyer and expected to forecast new looks, how would I go about that? That’s a really good question, and one that I feel very passionately about because I live in East London and there is a lot of art, and as I am from Liverpool I understand East London.I It is a place where art meets the streets and if you take that as one point and high end couture as the other end it’s where if you dipped yourself in glue and rolled yourself right through the whole lot, that’s where it would meet and so that I did! That’s probably the best answer to a question I have ever heard! That is what I believe in and I really do believe in the power of an amazing outfit and so, I mixed all of that together. I believe that you can 100% dress for success; you can make anyone believe what you are, in a situation, by how you are dressed.

Interview

It’s all about belief, and if you are aiming for that promotion and you look at image wisely you can get whatever you set out to achieve. So, how did you get involved in the Cabot Circus Fashion Show? My company is called Effort Made and I work for individuals and those in the public eye who understand the need for identity attention, be that a delectable daily wardrobe, a work-wear kickstart or a red carpet jaw-dropper. I was approached by Cabot Circus as they are very fashion forward and they, in association with Xcite asked me to be involved. Xcite is a Campaign Management Company and together we are rolling out this Fashion Tour. I am so passionate about this show because the buzz, atmosphere and pure foot-fall make for an exceptional event. I am at heart a shopper, and ever since laying my school clothes out on the bed as a kid, and even looking at the photos of my mum and dad, they were like an iconic couple. They have always been a great inspiration. A compliment can truly make your day and if someone can dress in a way that can make you feel good then that is empowering. Everything in each show at Cabot Circus compliments each other, and there is a mix of choreography by Vicky who works in the industry and some seriously high impact looks. I am off next to Exeter and Cardiff to continue promoting “The Power of a Great Outfit!” Who do you emulate in fashion? I hate to feel mainstream, but something very interesting has happened over the years with vintage, suddenly it is on sale mainstream, so I’m thinking I might have to dress like a Jedi to feel different! For a man someone who plays around with his silhouette like Vivienne Westwood, something that you don’t often see as a man that blurs the lines of the expected. I love McQueen too, you know but, then I am totally passionate about the high street, you should have a good blend of both. That’s why I say I love where I live it’s so rich of energy and vibrancy. If I feel passionate than I feel I can inspire that in others. Key accessories for A/W? I would jump on the androgyny and fetish trends, there are some really exciting pieces out there even if you are not brave. Great studded or pronged pieces in your artillery wear, it’s about the shrapnel! What you are bringing through is where androgyny meets the fetish to look slightly ahead, oh and jump on liquid metals too!

What is your favourite trend for this AW11? Favourite trend is the chunky knit, I love beautiful drape and uniqueness in knitwear and that is why I love a lot of what Unconditional are doing right now. There are lots of deep ox-blood and wine colours coming through in AW11. Show your looking forward to at London Fashion Week? Unconditional, definitely, and Vivienne Westwood, as Chris said it is the crowd pleaser, it brings the most amount of press and celebrities. It’s always manic outside, but Unconditional is more understated, it is more ‘cool’ in the sense that it brings the London Underground scene. So you get the celebrities but there is not so much fuss. Jodie Harsh DJ’s every time, people like Janice Dickinson, Pete Burns, it’s a bit more understated, dark and funky house and clothes speak for themselves. Unconditional is my favourite brand and now that we have opened our own stand-alone store in Manchester, I am like a kid in a candy shop! I love this Unconditional piece drape neck with scoop shoulder loop

Patrick

Favourite trend for AW11? Vivienne Westwood is always bringing a lot of tartan, and as my favourite designer I love this trend. This year there are a lot of pinks and blues as well, it is very heritage Vivienne Westwood. Marc Jacobs is doing a lot of 70’s inspired looks so you can see that in the menswear with the turtle necks and lurex, and then the power dressing for women with great suits in androgynous styles that are big this season. Favourite female dressing style? Anglomania which is coming in next summer are doing some great dresses, which really cinch you in at the waist and kick out with full bodied skirts, and McQ which is coming in next week, for example Emma Watson wore this tartan puff ball skirt, which was great, cutsie style dresses. Vivienne Westwood does great sharp tailoring which is sculptured and so flattering for women. The dresses by VW are always stand out dresses, the fabrics are always opulent and rich. A good Vivienne Westwood dress is perfect.

Three’s

A Crowd

If you are a single girl planning a holiday with your best friend and her boyfriend, Kate Mulvey has a cautionary tale for you…

As holidays go, it had started almost perfectly. Standing at the check-in at 9am, spraytanned with a suitcase full of amazing bikinis and matching sarongs, I was looking forward to 10 days of sun, sea and relaxation. Five hours later, as we drove down the dusty lanes of Sicily, I felt like banging my head against the car window. The thrill of being somewhere new and exciting was ruined by loud smacking noises, as my two holiday companions kissed noisily in the back. Going on holiday with a couple had seemed like such a good idea when it was conceived in the pub two weeks earlier. After a couple of white wine

genders – back at the villa. In short, a companionable threesome. “Karson is such fun,” Samantha assured me, when she asked if he could tag along. “And the cost can be split three ways,” she added excitedly. The reality was very different. As we chose our bedrooms at the rented villa in Taormina – they giggling over the silk sheets, me unpacking my rucksack on my own – I could already feel a simmering resentment. Things were not improved by a night’s rest. By the second morning, the old friend I used to put the world to rights with had morphed into Stepford girlfriend. Attempts to get her on her own – “Let’s go for a girlie walk,” I suggested one evening – were met with a look of irritation and surprise. “Er, I dunno. We haven’t decided what we’re doing yet,” she said. Hold on a second. We? Couldn’t she leave his side for one minute? We were supposed to

“The thrill of being somewhere new and exciting was ruined by loud smacking noises, as my two holiday companions kissed noisily in the back” spritzers, my original plan for a gal-pal holiday with my friend Samantha had been tossed aside in favour of “vacationing as a trio”. Whether it was the judgment-altering effects of the wine, or the excitable mood of the evening, but I had imagined rising late, taking leisurely lunches and sharing cosy chats – balanced between the

whatever we did, they acted like Romeo and Juliet on speed. If we were in the sea, they were wrapped around each other, bobbing up and down like a curious sea creature. At the restaurant in the evenings, when they gazed into each others’ eyes, I contemplated sticking the breadsticks up my nose for light relief. The resort may have been beautiful, the sea a turquoise blue, but as they held hands across the sunloungers, I felt as if I was present but not really there. The truth is, couples are often oblivious to everything else outside their cosy love bubble. As you become part of the furniture, it’s as if you join them behind closed doors – the pet names (his name for her was Pufi) that should be saved for private moments are employed in public. They chortle over in-jokes and speak in lovers’ shorthand. The point is, couples communicate in subtle ways that are impossible to penetrate. On one occasion I took Samantha aside and reminded her that they had promised not to be couply. She apologised, we hugged, but the next day, as I lagged behind listening to their baby talk and the squeals of laughter as he tickled her playfully in the ribs, I realised that the appeal of romance was too strong to resist. “Just going to the bar,” Samantha would say, but before I could start a conversation with her, Karson had jumped up and they walked hand in hand as if joined by an invisible thread. I felt trapped. I invested every niggle

villa. If I spied them being lovey-dovey, I would hold fictitious conversations on my BlackBerry, like a child trying to get their parents’ attention. The trouble is that what seemed like a perfectly good relationship back at home, with all the distractions of normal life, can quickly disintegrate under the strain of 10 days in each other’s company. On holiday, bound together in close proximity, and with fewer opportunities for everyone to get away from each other, any flaws are thrown into the spotlight. After a while I retreated behind an icy, unforgiving silence. Let them get on with it, I thought – this isn’t forever. When they went off shopping, I found a place that sold British newspapers and settled into a cafe with an espresso. I hiked for hours, leaving before they got up, and visited places of interest while they lay by the pool. As we touched down at Gatwick, I heaved a happy sigh of relief – the nightmare was finally over. Looking back, it wasn’t all bad. After 10 days stuck together in the sweltering Mediterranean heat, we had bonded in a curious sort of way. Eventually I came to realise that Sam and Karson were not the spawn of Satan for ignoring me, but just two people who happened to be in love. I have learnt a few valuable lessons. The key to a successful holi-

While there were no explosive confrontations, I had to bite my tongue on several occasions. I felt myself gripped with doom. Not surprising, really – the gooseberry holiday brings out our most primal fears of rejection. “You are not one of us,” the voices resounded in my head, and I was back in the playground, aged nine, and Joan was throwing sand in my face. On the flip side, I am sure they found me irritating and whiny. I have to admit, I turned into a stroppy teenager, stomping around the 72 TRÈS CHIC

Had we gone on an activity holiday, I am sure we would not have had so many problems. We have been back three weeks now, and while we avoided each other at first, we’ve since chatted on the phone, and Sam and I are good friends again. We’re all going to dinner next week – it will be just like old times, with one crucial difference: I will be bringing a date.

MULBERRY Glitter is no longer just for kids, It’s become a high fashion makeup trend, seen on many catwalks and normally around the festive season to add that extra sparkle. Whether going subtle for the Christmas party or living on the wild size for the New Year. Add it to the corner of the eye or line it along the top lid, best go for a fine glitter, its more comfortable to wear and less irritating on the eyes.

CRANBERRY

Bold and dramatic lips have come down the catwalk this year ranging in all shapes and sizes. Blondes try rich purple shades and brunettes a rusty red. A top tip for applying a dark lip is to use a brush, starting darker in the center and getting softer at the edges for a more fashionable effect.

RASPBERRY 79

Let the eye’s this season been the focus of the entire facial makeup! Try overlaying various shades of bright high in colour like MAC – hepcat. Layering a smoky eye will create depth and texture, add more emphasis on the highlighter with MAC pigment – pink opal. Skin should have a flawless looking finish and almost colourless soft bare lips.

Block colour is here to stay this A/W and from the two-tone teasers of Spring / Summer, the colour has risen right up to our faces. With looks from Dior’s Couture catwalk we are treated to bold, statement eyes, in green and pink, blue and orange and the jewel & bijou hues worn by only the most sassy & fashion forward flock. Whilst eyes take the centre at Dior there is also a sister look to this bold bias - The two-toned lip as beautifully painted by Ungaro. Exercise mild caution with matt, stay-put lipsticks and go with two complimentary tones, like a blush pink and classic coral. Hair Flare Made popular by style icon and now legend, Amy Winehouse, the messy up-do is having a resurgence in the wake of her sad demise. The look was already making a comeback on the catwalks this season but is now set to be a big trend going right through autumn as well as the rest of the summer. We have seen many versions coming down the catwalk, from Nina Ricci, Michael Kors, Phillip Lim and Proenza Schouler, all with their own take on the trend. Whether it’s a high pony with flying wefts and rolls, or a French twist, with less of the twist, this trend allows you to play around, have some fun and get messy. 40’s GLAMOUR

We love 40’s Glamour and it’s a must have this season with Gucci being a fore-runner setting the trend on the Milan catwalk for A/W 11... To complement this look it’s natural and sultry. This may seem an unlikely duo but this look will flow seamlessly through A/W 11 beyond. Diane-von-Furstenberg’s S/S 12 NYC fashion show oozes femininity, think peachy pink cheek tones with snippets of orange and ‘usually’ un-wearable yellow on and around the eyes.... (eek I hear you cry!) But yes, as seen on NYC S/S 12 shows including Derek Lam and DKNY, it works! Day? Keep the lips nude and subtly glossed. Party? Add a deep red or vibrant orange and extend that bow! If you think soft elegance stroked with romance, you’ve hit the spot!

Back2Basics Rehydrate and Protect!

This month our resident beauty expert Nikki Portner gives her top tips on preventing your skin from dehydrating throughout the winter months Working in the beauty industry, even I find it hard staying up to date with the latest products (usually celebrity endorsed), treatments and buzz words – how many people actually know the difference between pepopocides or parabens? So it is no wonder that I am bombarded with questions on a daily basis from my fantastic, but perennially puzzled clients. One of the biggest areas of doubt that I come across in my day to day work is people’s lack of knowledge about looking after their skin. Everyone wants to have a healthy and glowing complexion but not everyone knows how to achieve it – and unlike A-list stars or models most people don’t have the help of a personal dermatologist or make-up artist to help them out. The secret to beautiful skin is keeping it hydrated and protected. Don’t get confused with dry skin, which is lacking in oil, dehydrated skin is lacking in water. You know you have dehydrated skin if it feels tight after you have cleansed and feels like you need to apply a bottle of moisturiser. Other signs are fine lines around the eyes and forehead and general dullness. If these symptoms sound familiar then it is time for action, as dehydrat-

ed skin leads to premature ageing and should be tackled as soon as possible. Common causes of dehydration include poor cleansing such as using soap instead of a suitable cleanser, caffeine and alcohol consumption, over exfoliation, central heating, astringents such as toners with alcohol and lack of water intake. To prevent dehydration make sure that you always use a suitable cleanser, exfoliate once or twice a week and, most importantly, you should definitely use a moisturiser with hyaluronic acid, anti-oxidants, vitamins and a high SPF even in winter. After drinking caffeine or alcohol try to have at least one glass of water and, of course, have monthly hydration beauty treatments such as Guinot Hydradermie, which is fantastic for dehydrated skin.

“ Ingrown hairs are a common skin condition that occours when a deep rooted course hair grows at an abnormal angle and curls back on itself rather than growing out through the skin. They appear as red or tan coloured bumps on the skin, sometimes quite painful, problems occour if they become infected an scarring can result and leave post inflammatory hyperpigmentation. Prevention is the best cure. Avoid very close shaves, hot baths, and tight clothes immediately after depilation. Gently exfoliate to allow hair to grow up through the skin but avoid scratching and irritation with anything too harsh such as a loofah. AHA exfoliants are a good option and a soothing moisturising lotion with antiseptic tea tree oil to use on a daily basis. Resist DIY surgery that leads to scarring. See your GP if you have hot painful and infected follicles. I would suggest Intense Pulsed Light Hair reduction as best treatment to solve the problem. The intense light is attracted to the dark pigment of the hair. The whole hair shaft heats up (the same principle as electrolysis) and the heat destroys the germinating cells within the active follicle. In the following 2 weeks the follicle shrivels and releases the hair which drops out! Progressive hair reduction is achieved as the treatments are scheduled in a course to catch the different phases of the active and dormant follicles. With no more course hairs, the complications of ingrown hairs is resolved! We have been offering the Energist system of variable intense pulsed light IPL or VPL for short for the past 7 years, and are specialists in the area for all aspects of hair removal and advanced skin treatment.” If you have a beauty question or for details of The Beauty Clinic’s treatments please contact Rita for more information: 12 Hill Road, Clevedon. A Cinderella Story

If all that glitters is not gold then arent we glad it isnt. Bluberry Ice Designer Lexi Lawson lifts the lid on her own trunk of treasures Bluberry Ice is a brand that is extremely exciting for the south west. Having just moved to the region they bring a fantastic range of products to lighten up the darker winter months. If you haven’t heard of them quite yet, they create amazing pieces using Swarovski crystals that threaten to bring out the inner-princess in all of us, and if there’s one thing Tres Chic want under their tree this Christmas, it’s a pair of Cinderella Slippers! Lexi, how did you first start Bluberry Ice? “I felt that there was a gap in the market for a high end version of diamanté products. The internet is a-wash with low-quality bling phone cases and shoes. I just knew that the impact of using Swarovski would be incredible. When I first started I made shoes myself at home, and would spend hours with tweezers putting the crystals on to the shoes, luckily my partner Mario creates them now. It takes some time to make each piece and they are all completely unique. Which celebrities have worn your shoes? “Cheska Hull from Made in Chelsea wore them two weeks ago, Denise Van Outen has been papped wearing them… Lauren Goodger from The Only Way is Essex wore a pair to the BAFTAs and Kelly Rowland has ordered a pair. Our very own Bristolian; Josie Gibson also wore a pair on OK TV!” That is a great celebrity following! Any requests from X-Fac-

Fashion

tor for them? “Well we‘ve had requests from TV shows like Popstar to Operastar and The X Factor, Cher Lloyd’s got a pair, and we’ve had our shoes chosen over Christian Louboutins by stylists.” Where did you wear your first pair of shoes? “Lauren Goodger wore hers to the BAFTAs, but when I first made mine I had nowhere to wear them… so I wore them to Tesco to do the shopping!” How is Bluberry Ice different from other shoe brands? “We started off by wanting Bluberry Ice to be different - to cater to a higher niche market. There are different price ranges for the shoe collections; they are affordable but not cheap. We have developed a range of shoes that have a different blend of Swarovski called the LA Blu. They range from £120 for the LA Blu or just under £800 for a full Swarovski crystal pair. So how long does it take you to make the shoes? “We can have the shoes ready in 48 hours as long as we don’t have to have the shoes sourced, if you have a favourite old pair of shoes where the sole and the heel is good then we can get them done!” And can it be done with anything? “We can use any material: suede, patent, leather, mostly anything. We can also do it on phones, iPods, iPads, anything you want (Denise Van Outen has her initials on her phone!) The shoes are made with an extremely strong resin and very hard wearing, but if you do lose a crystal, we will replace it for you, the crystals are guaranteed for life!” Or, until Prince Charming comes along! www.bluberryice.com Contact: Lexi Lawson 07427 621994

THE FASHION AUCTION

As a hearty Bristol girl, when I got whiff of the Dreweatts and Bloomsbury Vintage Fashion Auction, my heart skipped a beat. Vintage Dior, Balmain you say?! So, in the interests of you dear reader I hot-footed up to the Dreweatts sale room to meet the fabulous organiser and vintage dealer extraordinaire – Samaya Ling. Who knew what gems she would un-cover...

88 TRÈS CHIC

Samaya tell me about the Bristol auction, how did you come to organise such an exciting event? Samaya: “Malcolm Claridge and I did the first Vintage Fashion Auction together back in February 2011 – it was an excellent sale, even with only 226 lots. We had a sample of the Queen Mothers wedding dress from the 1920s, made by Madame Handley-Seymour, which ensured we received lots of press and I was interviewed live on the BBC news. The upcoming October auction now has over 400 lots and so much to choose from.” What are your favourite pieces in the Bristol auction? Samaya: “I can’t decide on my favourite pieces, it’s too hard! Here are just a few of the things in the sale - aside from the Alexis Kirk collection: Beaded fringed flapper dresses, silk bias cut 1930s dresses, a little bright green 1920s couture cape by Lanvin, a cream 1980s wool Chanel coat, a red cashmere 1950s Hermes swing coat, several wool crepe 1940s dresses (think this seasons Miu Miu 1940s collection) with incredible detail, for example one has a studded gold belt and another has hand painted flowers on the bodice, 1960s Jaeger wool jackets and suits in bright colours and tweeds, Ossie Clark dresses – including a bright pink one with Edwardian style sleeves, 1970s Maxi dresses - my best here is a crème jersey Grecian dress, so easy to wear!” You must be sooo busy! The sale room is bursting to the rafters! What will you be up to tomorrow? Samaya: “I will be on my way to meet with one of the Dreweatts & Bloomsbury jewellery experts. We’re meeting to discuss the sale of some pieces that belonged to Wallis Simpson, The Duchess of Windsor (infamous for pinching our King and saying things like “A woman can’t be too rich or too thin”). I actually went to New York in late June to meet the woman who is putting these pieces into the sale, Lisa Kirk. Her father, Alexis Kirk, renowned jewellery designer, died in May 2010. His designs won him the Coty award early in his career and he quickly moved up the ladder, stopped working for Kenneth Jay Lane and in the late 1960s Kirk opened his own store on 5th Avenue. Alexis

TRÈS CHIC Kirk made one off pieces for many celebrities in his time, Jacqueline Onassis, Nancy Reagan (yikes) and many others. His belts were sold in high end department and specialty stores such as Saks and Neiman Marcus. They were used on shows such as Dynasty, and collected by such notable people as the Duchess of Windsor, Jackie Onassis and Babe Paley. Lisa Kirk showed me a letter of thanks from the Duke himself, mentioning the high quality of the pieces and how he and the Duchess found them to be in good taste, the letter was written on Waldorf Astoria stationary. What a strange life those two must have led, after Edward abdicated from the throne, parties, more parties, dressing immaculately, another party, collecting more clothing…never quite living anywhere but hotels…perhaps it was not so bad but judging by the recent documentary on the Duchess Of Windsor’s letters it was not quite as she had planned. They were the darlings of the fashion houses, if they wore a designer piece (YSL for example) then it was seen, hopefully photographed and mentioned everywhere, and was excellent publicity.” Tell us more about these pieces? Samaya: “Sotheby’s (New York) put on an auction of the Windsors’ belongings in 1988 and sales totalled $23.4 million, more than three times Sotheby’s $7 million estimate. I have seen a few pages of this catalogue and would love to see the rest – what an incredible fashion history. Three of the pieces that Alexis Kirk had made, commissioned by the Duchess, were in that sale. Dramatic body sculpture jewellery pieces encased in dark red leather boxes, initialled W&E (Wallis & Edward) in gold, with padded lining in white satin. Alexis Kirk went to the auction in person and bought them back for his own archive, along with two other magnificent necklaces by unknown designers.” Wow! What else was notable about that sale? Samaya: “Also bidding in the room were buyers from all the big fashion houses; YSL, Chanel and many more, all seeking to buy back their creations once worn by the Duchess. Lisa Kirk found my website by googling ‘vintage

Feature

Alexis Kirk’. She could immediately tell I loved his work and contacted me about buying her father’s collection. It quickly became clear that it was a huge amount of pieces, not just the Windsor pieces but Alexis Kirk’s own archive of designs, mainly 1970s and early 1980s.” And what of your work with the Kirks? Samaya: “Well after some thought I asked Lisa if she would like me to arrange selling the collection at auction here in the UK (as there was no way I could offer her what it was worth). It would really help her to sell it all at the right prices and I at least could get to see it all, try a few things on, sigh over the huge brushed metal cuffs and ‘Jaws’ (the 1970s film) inspired torque necklaces…look like a rock star (hopefully a female one) for a few minutes in a pink snakeskin belt with huge race horse design buckles….and generally be a total fan! Happily, Lisa Kirk and her family agreed that selling the Duchess pieces in England would be a good plan and that I (working with Dreweatts and Bloomsbury) could take a large part of the Kirk collection to sell alongside the Duchess pieces. 35 lots of Alexis Kirk belts and jewellery are going into The Vintage Fashion Auction, October 18th, and 25 lots are to be sold at The Luxury Accessories Auction, October 10th 2011 at The Cumberland Hotel.” Do you still dream of New York? Samaya: “Being in New York was AMAZING, I really could live there, tomorrow. Lisa Kirk and her family let me into their apartment on a Sunday morning and showed me into a room containing 40 HUGE BOXES FULL OF JEWELLERY!… I immediately wished I had booked a longer trip but got straight to work…by the end of the first day I had sorted pieces for ten hours!…” From New York to Bristol, what more can we expect? Samaya: “In amongst our Bristol auction we have several rare, and early, Vogue magazines, Harpers Bazaar issues from 1955 – 1964…all with beautiful covers. A late 1970s gold chain belt by Chanel, a large collection of 1963 Dior signed costume jewellery. There is so much more, early 1930s fur jackets with big shoulders and excellent shapes and detail, boxes of lace collars, beaded panels, lame and lace dresses, 1920s piano shawls with deep knotted fringes – I especially like the gold lame shawls….and oooh! the most incredible silk and beaded 1930s couture evening jacket with MASSIVE shoulders, think Lady Gaga / Rihanna. This looks so good on me with my harem pants and jewelled sandals…Someone buy it for me please?” For more details on Dreweatts Auction and Samaya Ling Vintage visit: www.dnfa.com/bristol/ and http://samayalingvintage.blogspot.com/ 18 October 2011, 10:30 at Bristol (Apsley Road) view days: 15th October 9.30am - 1.00pm 17th October 9.30am - 6.00pm Morning of sale 18th from 9.00am Clockwise from top left: Shoot styled by Louise Foley and Samaya Ling, Photographer Chis Lucus. 1930’s Jacket; Astrakan jacket with fur collar.

The lighting is subdued and inviting with low hung red tulips and stainless steel domes to off-set the warmth. The bar is impressively stocked with an array of Whiskey and Wine and all the trappings of any evening haven. On arrival we are treated to a glass of house Prosecco which as Ronnie recommends has notes of apricot and peach, a touch not normally addressed to a seasoned Prosecco lover. The music is a-kin to a Tuscan holiday and as we drift away via the delicate bubbles of Prosecco, even before the food arrives the warmth and care given by the staff is apparent. The seating throughout the restaurant is cleverly constructed to provide intimate booths and coves for couples and larger spaces for group dining which all add to the inviting and dexterous space. One of the additional features of this exciting restaurant is the Chef’s Table which seats up to 8 diners and even has overhead TV screens transmitting pictures live from the kitchen. Guests who book this table in advance can even bring their own wines to drink on the night if they wish. people could bring their own wine which made dining out affordable, so I think that side of it should be celebrated and remembered.” Once seated we peruse the menu to be tempted by a fine taster menu of such treats as; Crisp Potato, Quails Eggs, Girolles and Squash or Cornish Bass & Cauliflower with Black Rice and Capers. A delicious taster menu of 6 dishes which is recommended to be enjoyed by two, for ultimate sharing pleasure. Although wildly tempted, we opt for starters and mains and are further treated by ‘a gift from the Chef’; an amuse bouche of Beef & Potato Scotch Polenta with Apple Bacon & Squash Chips. The creamiest of potato and warmth of the beef complimented beautifully with the squash and fine slices of apple. In true (amuse bouche) amusement for the mouth form. Now taking a break from the dining, the wine cellar behind us is glass fronted and shows a glittering array of bottles from every corner of the globe, from the Prosecco Di Valdobiaddene NV from Italy, Bestue Rosado from Spain to The Gypsy 2006 from South Africa. The house sauvignon served in delightful carafes is equally of high standard and if wine is not to your taste, Tres Chic suggest the elderflower Martini. Our food choices were taken from the set menu and included the starters; Cornish Fish Soup, Brown Shrimps, Rouille and Fregola. The fish soup was poured over at the last minute and the ingredients within were a subtle mixture of hearty pasta like balls infused with delicate flavours of the sea. The Charred Leeks, Goat’s Cheese and Tomato and Grain Mustard was light and bounced a bounty of flavours around your mouth. Each starter dish was a true delight. Mains were such as the Roast Pollock, Chickpea Panisse, Broccoli and Tomato Fondue which

was exceptionally cooked and delectable, accompanied beautifully with the richness of the tomato fondue. The Risotto of local Courgette and Marrow, Parmesan and Curds was full of flavour and complimented by the sour cream centre, creamy and filling with the subtle notes of root vegetables. All the dishes were cooked with considerable care and attention to detail by David Underwood who’s experience spans across the continents from Melbourne to the Michelin-starred Arbutus in Soho and three rosette Alimentum in Cambridge. His views on cooking are borne out of seasons and reinforcing flavours at their best. All ingredients at The Muset are picked from markets daily and new dishes are added every few weeks, even their bread is delivered from Hobbs House Bakery in Chipping Sodbury every morning. Method 1. Pre-heat your oven to 160c, 325f gas mark 3 2. Roll out and line a 25cm deep flan dish with the shortcrust pastry. 3. Bring the cream to the boil with a good slice of lemon zest. Take off the heat and allow to cool 4. In a bowl large enough to hold all the ingredients, mix the sugar, ground almonds, flavourings and candied peel. 5. Whisk the egg whites until stiff and gently fold into the cooled cream, then fold the egg whites and cream into the rest of the ingredients. 6. Pour into the pastry case. Slice the oranges and lemons thinly and cover the whole of the top of the flan with the slices. 7. Scatter the top with a little extra sugar and bake for 1-11/4 hours or until just set. Method 1. Sift the flour with salt into a bowl. 2. Add the butter and the shortening and cut with a knife until it is in small pieces. 3. Then rub with your fingertips until the mixture forms crumbs. You can do this part of the recipe with a food processor. 4. Add the cold water mix or need together, finally wrap in cling film and refridgerate for 30 minutes before rolling out.

Method 1. Place the gammon joint in the pan. 2. Pour in the cider and add sufficient water to cover. Add the onion, carrot and celery plus a few whole peppercorns. 3. Cover the pan and bring the liquid slowly to the boil, reduce the heat and simmer, very gently, for approximatley 1 hour 40 minutes.

For the glaze

Method 1. Strain off and reserve the stock. Turn the oven onto full heat. 2. Line a roasting tin with baking paper and place the joint in it. Slice off the skin, leaving a layer of fat on the joint. 3. Smear the fat with the mustard and sugar and score with a sharp knife as if you were laying out a noughts-and crosses game. 4. Stud the pattern with cloves. Pour in a little of the ham stock to stop the joint sticking and return it to a fully heated oven. Roast for 30 minutes, then let the joint rest for at least 10 minutes. Serve ham thickly sliced with parsley sauce.

she must have been a student teacher, but got us to paint ‘The Doll with the Luminous Nose’ and I did this painting which she loved and she showed it to the whole school assembly, and when she left she let me hold her hand all the way to the bus stop! I suddenly realised if I did great paintings, Girls quite like me! Miss Grundy has got a lot to answer for!

Five minutes with

LES MATTHEWS A modern viewpoint through a renaissance eyes

Where have you biggest inspirations come from? My biggest inspirations came as a student restorer at the National Gallery on Trafalgar Square, they were just the best people in the world, I learned everything I know almost from that time because those early Renaissance paintings which are still my favourite period of our history, they had a technical expertise which I still use now. I use masses of under painting to get the tones right ,and then to get the colour right I use transparent glazes of oil paint on top of that, which just gives a glow to the painting. I look at those Renaissance paintings and I just die really, I just think they are so beautiful. Where as on the other hand my imagery is much more modern, and in some ways the way I facet things is, a different approach, but I would still like to think that it is a modern viewpoint through a Renaissance eyes. How did you begin showing collections at The Alexander Gallery? I used to visit the gallery on and off, just to see what was going on and then one day it was suggested that I have an exhibition, he suggested that on the day of opening I get in the window, live, painting a picture, but I had simply hundreds of people come and ask me so many questions that in fact, I hardly got any painting done! But it was really nice as I mainly sell through galleries and rarely do I meet clients, so last time I did it I met some major clients of mine whom I would never have met. From your biog Les you say ‘As I wondered around Bristol with my sketch book, I realised a celebration of my home city was a challenging and very exciting prospect, and partly a trip down memory lane’ Tell me about that... I went to school in the middle of Bristol and at lunchtimes I would be being playing on Brandon Hill and going up on Cabot Tower, seeing the social life on College Green and walking through the Norman Arch. I used to go down Christmas Steps to the old Joke Shop there, the Edward Everard (arts and crafts) building and I remember as a lad, seeing that building and being amazed by it, and I still am. Its amazing that most Bristolian’s don’t even know its there! I used to play hooky (truant) from school to go down there and draw. I remember being caught one-day at school and them not believing me! I used to say ‘look I’ll show you the painting.’ Its always been like that for me, I used to sketch draw and paint from a young age, in-fact I can tell you about Miss Grundy, my primary school teacher.. Please tell us about Miss Grundy!... I have very few memories of primary school but, I do remember Miss Grundy,

We opened our interview by discussing that ‘It is not that you work slowly but that your work takes a long time.’ How long would you say that is? An absurd amount of hours, really I just want to be in the studio. I am in the studio from 8am, an hour for lunch an hour for supper and I leave a 10.30 at night and I do that seven days a week, I just don’t stop. It is absolutely a labour of love. My wife may resent it but it when I am happiest, I feel at peace. Although if a painting is going badly, not so peaceful! I must throw a way 2-3 per year, those that I just cannot make work. Alexander Gallery say ‘The intricacies and quality of his work demand the viewer take time to fully explore the city in front of them, drawing them back time and time to discover more and more.’ Would you say that that is an accurate descriptive of your work? One of the biggest things with my paintings is the facets to them. My paintings are like parcels of memory, I do long panoramas that are wider than you can see without moving your head. So very often those parcels are when I’m looking to the right hand side of the vista, what I am remembering is happening on the left so what you end up with is these little changes, and alterations that I really enjoy doing. Who is an inspirational artist of yours in the 20th Century? I adore Malovich The Russian Painter. He gives me great pleasure & truly has his own voice. I think many Artists have not yet discovered their own voice, in the 60’s I used to paint lots of Women with no clothes on and flowers, but that wasn’t my own voice that was the voice of the times. What can you tell our readers that they may not know? I have a tattoo of Picasso on my shoulder - to Tracy Emin, a picture of Yuri Gararin in the form of a dove! TRÈS CHIC 99

Spotlight: Pitbull. This year has definitely been a great year for Pitbull. Pitbull has dominated our ears and ruled the music waves this summer with his addictive Club Anthems. His Smash Hits have included ‘On the Floor’, ‘I like it’, ‘Give Me Everything’ and his newest single featuring Marc Anthony ‘Rain Over Me’. Pitbull is without a doubt the King of Music this summer. He’s been about for a while, but Pitbull has finally arrived!! Facts about Pitbull: His Real Name is Armando Christian Pérez and he is 30 years old. Pitbull explained the reason behind choosing his stage name; “[talking about the dog] They bite to lock. The dog is too stupid to lose. And they’re outlawed in Dade County. They’re basically everything that I am. It’s been a constant fight.” ‘Give Me Everything’ was Pitbull’s first No.1 Single in the UK. Celebrity of the Month:

ing celebrated the Big 3-0 in September, no one expected Beyonce to announce the news she did. Not a whisper of a rumour or even a hint of a headline and Beyonce blew us all out of the water when she announced she was pregnant; and she did it in style. It was the VMA’S Red Carpet, yet the red dress and the cute baby belly wasn’t quite enough of a hint for Beyonce; she hit the stage to perform her song ‘Love on Top’ and officially announced it by shouting ‘Show some love to what’s growing inside me!’ Beyonce now happily talks openly about her pregnancy saying “I am having so much fun; it has been the most fun time now that it has been announced, It was really difficult to conceal, but now... I can be proud and excited about it, I’m having so much fun shopping - it’s great!” We love you and your beautiful baby bump Beyonce!! Now Beyonce has got the voice, the looks, the man, a successful career behind her and now she’s pregnant with what may be the most musically talented baby known to man, so we’re glad to hear that the pretty much perfect Mrs Jay-Z has got some gross baby cravings and they are really gross!! According to reports she is snacking on Oreo biscuits and gherkins, Bounty ice creams with hot chilli sauce and she loves dipping bananas in ketchup. For breakfast, she’s been having croissants with melted Dime bars inside. Gross!! Beyonce is one of the most talented people in the entertainment industry – she can dance, she can sing, she can act and now she will be adding Great Mum to that list as well! The Million Dollar question now is ‘What is the Sex of B’s Baby!’

Lindsey Lohan suing Pitbull: Pitbull has had a great summer but

his success has brought him a lawsuit and it comes from the hot mess herself, Lindsey Lohan. Lohan is suing mad over the apparently disparaging lyrics about her in his song ‘Give Me Everything. Pitbull calls it ironic as he intended the lyrics as a positive reference to Lindsey. Pitbull believes that Lohan may have misunderstood his meaning in the lyrics, ‘Hustlers move aside, so I’m tiptoein’, to keep flowin’, I got it locked up like Lindsay Lohan.’ What do you think? I think Lindsey should look at it as free publicity – millions of people around world will be rapping her name!?

cause she seemed bewildered on the panel. Speaking on Piers Morgan, Piers asked “Now what happened to poor Cheryl? One minute she’s there, the next minute she’s gone, Nicole’s in her chair – what went down?” Simon replied saying that someone at the screening of the X Factor footage had “put it very well” when they said the Girls Aloud star had “looked a bit bewildered” on the panel. Simon also went on to say he takes full responsibility for it. Cheryl doesn’t seem that bothered by his comments however; she has been in LA filming a Hollywood Movie with Cameron Diaz and was recently spotted looking stunning at the launch of her shoe collection! To top it off it’s been reported she snubbed Simon again by saying a big Fat ‘NO’ to becoming a Judge of Britain’s Got Talent. The question is what is next for Cheryl? Ashley? A Chat show? Movies? I’m sure she will be on top again soon!

Charlie Sheen is Roasted!

In the middle of trying to make a clean comeback Charlie Sheen was the object of a celebrity roasting and it was hilarious! Airing in competition with the season premiere of his former show Two and a Half Men his roasting drew out a full list of stars and a full list of amazing jokes. Jokes included “How much blow can Charlie Sheen do? Enough to kill two and a half men.”, “Just like Bruce Willis, you were big in the 80s and now your old slot is being filled by Ashton Kutcher.”. Comedian Jeffrey Ross also addressed one of Sheens’ ex-wives, Brooke Mueller, who was in attendance saying ‘She’s not very bright, unless Charlie’s throwing a lamp at her”. Actress Kate Walsh gave Charlie a roasting saying ‘It’s amazing -- after abusing your lungs, liver and kidneys, the only thing you’ve had removed is your kids,” said actress Kate Walsh, one of those lining up to attack Sheen on the show.’ Burn!!! To close out the show Charlie added: ‘’Im done with winning because I have already won, this roast may be over but I’m Charlie Sheen. In here burns an internal fire. I just have to remember to keep it away from a crack pipe.’ has decided to take his musical talent that step further, he is going to make an album. Last we heard about Rob’s long-anticipated album, he was saying that he wanted to release it by the end of 2010 but he didn’t make his deadline. We’ve had word from a source saying that R-Patz is once again moving forward with the album; “Rob has been kicking a few original songs around for a long time, but his schedule didn’t allow it. Now he’s got some weeks to get everything in line before going back to promoting Breaking Dawn.” “[He’s been] studying on on other instruments — like piano and horns. It’s an obsession for him.” Another hot source claimed “The album Rob will make will be guitar-based and drums, very organic-sounding, nothing pop. Like stripped-down Ray LaMontagne meets Van Morrison. “Music is his first love! He’s tortured because he avoids it. When he’s sitting around jamming in the studio, it’s his favorite moment of life.” Passionate as well, you got to love him! It’s a shame about the girlfriend! I am very curious about this album and can’t wait to hear what Rob has to offer.

Show & Shimmer Designer goods, champagne and the city sky-line, It’s an intoxicating mix for any glamour-puss. Tres Chic uncovers the best of the ‘M-Shed Magnifique’ with the Harvey Nichols Fashion Show

Set on the historic Bristol Harbourside, the people of Bristol were treated to some truly iconic looks from the Harvey Nichols A/W Fashion Show 2011, with an ethereal backdrop of the city skyline; there wasn’t a more befitting venue. We arrived to witness the glittering array of new vehicles designed by Land Rover, lining the red carpet and setting the tone of grandeur perfectly, and on entry into the wonderful M Shed, part of the Watershed’s ongoing regeneration, we were enamoured by the cream of it’s fleet the Range Rover Evoque. Gleaming in all it’s £43,000 glory. Upstairs to a champagne reception and the reason we were here – the show. The atmosphere was quite something as everyone found their seats, we rifled through our goody bags, sipping champagne and enjoying the music as we prepared for the Autumn / Winter collections. With name trends such as 40’s Glamour, Shimmer & Shine and Fetish to treat us, we were intrigued to witness powerhouse Harvey Nichol’s take on A/W11. The show kicked off with possibly the most important potential purchase of the season; Great Coats – first for women & then men. For girls we saw a fantastic double breasted fluorescent coat by DKNY, and a beautiful Shearling by Joseph, mostly teamed with Givenchy leggings and an array of Louboutins, with a heavy focus on layering and texture. For men the coats were in trench or wool, or the fabulous Belstaff brand took centre stage, in a great Panther 4 pocket leather version and gorgeous knits like the D&G chunky cable polo. Next was 40’s glamour, executed perfectly with Dents long leather gloves, an attention to hosiery, a splattering of bottle green and some winning Stella McCartney. We particularly loved the Stella McCartney Tulle with dots for a wow factor and teamed with Vintage Chanel, we were suitably impressed. Back to the boys with the Lumberjack look and a really accessible selection of casuals, weekend wear and winter warmers, Moncler Gilets with Crew Ski Sweaters,

Fashion

Dsquared Jeans and Gucci Shearling hi-tops. We cast our thoughts to Christmas with a great re-visitation of Alpine Knits and some more trusty Belstaff for outerwear. We were treated next to the talk of the season – Jewel tones and were wowed with some serious new season brights in the shape of Alexander McQueen’s drape back knit dress, Markus Lupfer’s Ruby Sequin Sweater, J Brand Luxe Jeans in twill and some gorgeous Balenciaga Ballerinas. All the models were exceptionally styled and with the de rigueur Wolford tights or great comebacks such as the studded stiletto by Miu Miu. Urban Junkie brought us Sweatpants and Gucci Shoulder bags for boys and a fantastic Cassius Clay Sweatshirt by Dolce Gym, all with hi-tops and a relaxed swagger. The next looks were One of the Boys & Relaxed Tailoring which gave the nod towards androgyny and smart dress, fine tailoring all with a relaxed aesthetic. Nudie Dry Denim or Ralph Lauren Chinos, the looks were sharp and unfussy, but with an influence on glitter detailing, stud and sparkle. Fetish & Dark Twisted Fantasy were next up proving that to stay safe is not high-fashion. Fabulous iridescent Velvets, Mohawk Skull necklaces and Louboutin over the knee military boots had us gasping in the aisles. The show’s finale was Shimmer & Shine in true Mermaid styles the gowns were breathtaking, the Amanda Wakeley beaded dress and Stella McCartney foil print gave serious style citation. The looks were elegant in glitter satin and perfect for the coming party season. After such a great fashion round up from Harvey Nichols, Tres Chic are extremely excited about Winter! www.harverynichols.com TRÈS CHIC 105

f you were looking to get truly under the skin of a city, whilst staying in opulent surroundings but without the stuffy grandeur, you might be somewhat stuck. Between the faceless corporates and dingy guest houses there is rarely an offering of accommodation that bridges that gaping chasm. But wait, Tres Chic has the pleasure of bringing you an alternative. Number 38 Clifton is the brainchild of Adam Dorrien Smith & his brother Mike, both with a love of high-end service and comfort they have clearly been stuck with the same quandary, but not left it there. Until 2 years ago Adam co-owned the Kingham Plough gastro-pub in Oxfordshire which he ran with Emily Watkins of Heston Blumenthal’s Fat Duck. It attracted folk such as Jeremy Clarkson and David Cameron, and was a cracking success, but Adam decided that he wanted to become a hotelier and bought the Georgian Merchants Townhouse in Clifton, Bristol. The result of such a bold move is a sensitively restored and elegantly decorated 10 bedroom accommodation with stunning views of Bristol.

Since then it has been featured in The Times – Cool Hotel Guide cited by Tom Chesshyre as being much like ‘the uber cool Dean Street Townhouse & Shoreditch House London... but with much more room.” With deep copper baths, fun and spacious bathrooms, views across Bristol’s coloured skyline and backdrop of the rolling Downs, the hotel strikes a pleasing balance of decadence with humble homely touches. Having only been open just two and a half months, Adam tells me that “every review on trip advisor has been 5*, and that they are getting impressively booked for Christmas.” Quite a start. Number 38 offer breakfast and drinks in the evening until 8.30pm, with exclusive recommendations to pop-up restaurants & boutiques, like Flinty Red and Hausbar just around the corner, “so people are getting in an instant, into the cool part of the city, instead of saying there you go, there’s your room, we want them to buy in to our vibe,” and buy we have! Why not try their exclusive Spa package with the Lido – including a 1-hour treatment and use of the spa and pool for the day. Call for information & quote Tres Chic.

To Cook or not to Cook? There’s a revolution that everyone’s talking about, and it’s called raw food, says nutrional expect Jeni Cook Over the last five years the raw food lifestyle has been gaining popularity. Although it may have originally been associated with tree-hugging hippies and those with an “alternative” lifestyle, it has since been embraced by “The Hollywood Set” including celebrities such as Madonna, Jennifer Aniston, Woody Harrelson, Demi Moore, Alicia Silverstone, Cher, Susan Sarandon, Donna Karan, Jared Leto, Bryan Adams, Boy George, Paul Cook and many more. They have all advocated the raw food lifestyle to some degree and attested to its health-giving benefits. It has even been featured on popular shows such as “Oprah” and “Tyra Banks”. Other benefits of a raw and living food diet are:

• • • • • • •

Weight loss Increased energy Glowing, younger looking skin Brighter eyes Improved digestion A greater sense of well-being It is kinder to animals and the planet

The cells in our body function at their best when they are slightly alkaline, but most of us are way too acidic due to our fast life styles, stress, eating highly-processed foods, over-cooked foods, meat, dairy and sugar. In contrast, raw and living foods are highly alkaline and full of anti-oxidants and life-force, and so help to alkalize the blood and thus improve health. Our bodies are 70 percent water, so staying hydrated is really important and helps keep us energised. Being dehydrated is a common cause for feeling sluggish and getting sick. Fruits and vegetables are also about 70 percent water, so by increasing the amount of these fresh foods in our diets we increase the amount of water we absorb because, let’s face it, although we know that we should drink at least two litres of water a day, most of us don’t. In order to feel the health benefits of the raw foods lifestyle, you don’t have to be 100 percent raw. By increasing your intake gradually, which Inside Urb La Alzambra, Puerto Baùs, Marbella. is rapidly gaining popularity in the mainstream due to all the positive media coverage. I have to say though this is by no means some new fad diet. Eating raw food was our original way of living and has been around for thousands of years. We just lost our way over the centuries and now we are slowly but surely finding our way back. So what are raw and living foods, and what are some of the health benefits? Raw and living foods are uncooked, unprocessed, organic, plant-based whole foods such as fruits, vegetables, nuts, seeds, sprouts, grains and sea vegetables. These foods are high in vitamins, minerals, proteins, essential fats, fibre and phyto nutrients, and low in saturated fats. They feed and nourish the body with life force and energy. Nothing is heated over 115º Fahrenheit, so that the enzymes which aid digestion and absorption remain intact. Without enzymes, the catalysts to all life, including digestion, we simply couldn’t survive. When we cook our food it destroys those precious vitamins, minerals and enzymes, and completely changes the molecular structure of the food, forcing the body to use more of its own enzymes to break down the denatured food. This uses vital energy that could otherwise be used elsewhere in the body, for instance to renew cells, thus putting an extra strain on the immune system. Enzyme destruction via cooking is detrimental in so many ways; it not only affects our immune system, but also our brain function and energy levels. In general, cooking food also depletes its nutritional value, although it is said that it increases the nutritional value of some foods such as tomatoes. Of course, there are other foods that just aren’t palatable when eaten raw such as artichokes and aubergines, while pulses such as chickpeas and lentils are sprouted to break down the enzyme inhibitors and release their nutrients. Raw foods are in the form that nature intended and are perfect for the body, with the right amount of nutrients for optimal health. By eating more of our food this way, we reduce the risk of degenerative diseases such as diabetes, heart disease, cancer, auto-immune deficiencies such as rheumatism and arthritis and many more diseases.

Others will eat raw fish like sushi and raw meat such as Carpaccio, and some eat a percentage of their food cooked. Dehydrating is very popular among raw foodists as this gives raw food a cooked feel without destroying the enzymes. So if your idea of raw food is carrot and celery sticks, think again. Margaret Humphreys brought this issue to the world’s attention in the late 1980s and dealt with many of the emotionally scarred adults who were sent away and told that their parents were dead. Emily Watson’s performance as the un-tiring social worker has been highly praised by critics, as have Hugo Weaving’s and David Wenham’s who play two of the now grown up children who were sent to Australia with the empty promise of oranges and sunshine ringing in their ears. 112 TRÈS CHIC

Book Reviews

“Natalia our very own BOOK WORM, talks to us about her FAVOURITE BOOKs of the moment”

Ape House

By Sara Gruen Author of bestselling novel Water for Elephants, Sara Gruen once again enchants us with her unique story-telling and creation of distinctive animal characters. Inspired by her own encounter and personal friendship with bonobo apes from the Great Ape Trust, Sarah Gruen teaches and educates us about a fascinating species that we might have known nothing about. The two main human characters in the book are John Thigpen, a struggling journalist, and Isabel Duncan, a linguistic scientist. After a lab explosion set by an extreme animal rights group, Isabel is left seriously injured and the bonobos are sold away to appear on a reality TV show. Fighting to get them back, she is quickly joined by John, who had previously met and become friends with the bonobos whilst doing a piece on their use of language. They work together to be re-united with their animal friends. Although an entertaining story, The Ape House also manages to expose the darker side to human nature and animal suffering in experimental labs. Sara Gruen is truly a hero and champion for animal rights! Why will you enjoy this book? As well as being thoroughly entertained, you will learn a lot! TRÈS CHIC 113
