albemarle Celebrate Life In Jefferson’s Virginia
Once in a Lifetime As one of Ed Roseberry’s many careers, he served as the “in-house” photographer at Monticello, where he had the pleasure of working with former curator, James A. Bear, Jr. In 1965, Donnie McGregor of McGregor’s Motors and Ed set off on their own Lewis and Clark expedition to persuade James Bear to allow them to photograph their cars on the lawn of Monticello. Ed owned a 1941 Cadillac Fleetwood and Donnie owned a 1941 Lincoln Continental. Still on the road today, Ed’s Cadillac was purchased in 1951 from its original owners, Mr. and Mrs. L. Bright of Keswick. Captured in time, this classic luxury Cadillac automobile and Jefferson’s Monticello are recognized internationally as true American icons. Selected works of Ed Roseberry, images that have captured historic moments of Charlottesville’s people, places, and events, will be featured in albemarle throughout the year. Take time to tour Monticello this spring and visit Ed and his antique car at the Piedmont Regional AACA Car Show on April 27.

VIRGINIA FESTIVAL OF THE WHEEL BOARD OF DIRECTORS
It is exciting to see so many beautiful and classic cars, from Ferraris and Fords to Shelbys and Packards, all in one place. What is even more interesting are the stories behind the cars and the owners’ journeys to acquire their vehicle and to bring them back to their former glory. When you walk through the Festival on Sunday, take time to converse. When you see an owner polishing a spot on the chrome of their car, stop and ask the owner the history of the vehicle. The car may not define who the owner is, but it does reflect who they are—you’ll learn a lot just by listening to how they describe it.

e want to welcome you to the third annual Virginia Festival of the Wheel and to thank you for coming. When we conceived this event, our vision was to present a show that provided all participants with a good experience and a program that would make the event exciting and informative. Our mission is to raise awareness and support for the UVA Cancer Center Patient Care Fund, an organization which has improved the lives of so many, not just in Charlottesville, but across the country. All of us have experienced challenges and changes over the last two years. My wife and I consider ourselves lucky to be here. We also understand our personal situations have changed our perspective on life. I have undergone a life-changing stroke, and my wife has had major surgery for lung cancer. We are so fortunate to have kind and caring people in our lives, and especially in our healthcare community. These individuals care more about the welfare of others than they do about themselves. In the past, I may have been aware of their existence, but now I have personally experienced their care and compassion. The UVA Cancer Center provides the very highest level of care for those that are fighting this disease. I have witnessed their professionalism and care first-hand, as they offer the same high level of treatment to all. Would you mind stopping for a moment as you read this and consider your blessings? What better place to do this than at Boar's Head Resort on Labor Day weekend, among beautiful cars and many good people. We are all so lucky to be here. Enjoy your experience, and thank you for supporting Virginia Festival of the Wheel and the UVA Cancer Center.

Remembering Their Drive and Passion for the Automobile BRUCE A. ELDER 1957–2021 In February of this year, the car community lost a dear friend and advocate for our hobby. Bruce Elder became interested in cars at a very early age when, as he often told the tale, his favorite teacher was whisked away from school one day by a gentleman in an E-Type Jaguar, never to return. By the age of 15, Bruce started pursuing his business formally, establishing his antique car company in New Hampshire, which subsequently brought him in contact with car enthusiasts worldwide. In 1989, Bruce and his family moved to Staunton, VA, and opened Bruce A. Elder Antique and Classic Vehicles. In addition to his vast knowledge of cars, Bruce was always interested in the stories behind the vehicle. Bruce was a great storyteller and always enjoyed sharing these stories with many car enthusiasts. It is this love that we are honoring by creating The Bruce Elder Trophy to be given to the car with the best story. In 2014, Bruce was diagnosed with cancer and spent seven years as a patient with the UVA Cancer Center. This relationship with the Center and extensive knowledge of cars led Bruce to be a speaker at both the 2018 and 2019 VFOTW events. The VFOTW’s stated purpose of raising money for the UVA Cancer Center Patient Care Fund, which assists cancer patients with their bills, was a personal cause for Bruce. Family and friends miss Bruce, and his impact on our hobby will continue with this special award, The Bruce Elder Trophy presented in his honor.—by Bill Krzastek
WELDON WRIGHT SCROGHAM 1939–2021 Weldon was the proprietor of G&W Motorwerkes, Ltd and built a successful business from humble beginnings in 1969. He was a Northeast Division SCCA champion race driver and noted worldwide expert in the Porsche brand, winning the Porsche Club of America’s top award for Concours restoration unprecedentedly four times. Weldon served as an honored judge of the Amelia Island and Pebble Beach Concours. He never met a stranger, and his favorite pastime was buying lunch for an unsuspecting patron at one of his favorite lunch spots. Known for his unique hats and easy smiles, Weldon was a friend to many in the area. He truly cared about other people and took time out of his day to help others, even in the last days of his life. He believed you could accomplish anything you set your mind to if you had enough self-discipline and respect for yourself and others. While serving in the US Army Corps of Engineers in Germany in the late 1950s, Weldon saw his first Porsche and asked someone nearby, “What kind of car is that?” They responded “a Porsche,” and he knew he would own one someday. This chance meeting of the little-known German sports car would shape the rest of his life. He bought, restored, and sold countless Porsche cars, specializing for many years in the Porsche Speedster. He likely has owned more Speedsters than any other person in the world!—by Jason Robson

Ford vs. Ferrari Wars The Rest of the Story If it weren’t for their participation in racing, Ford and Ferrari probably wouldn’t exist.
O
ctober 10, 1901, was the day that Henry Ford, driving his racer ”Sweepstakes,” proved themselves by beating what was then considered the best driver and a superior car in a ten-lap shoot-out. This win established Ford’s reputation as an engineer and secured the financial future of the Ford Motor Company. It was Henry’s first and only stint as a race driver and in his words, “Once is enough.” Fast forward to 1962 Ford launched the “Total Performance” program, designed to showcase its engineering and reliability, winning races on Sunday and selling cars on Monday. What better way to do that than winning the 24 Hours of Le Mans. Henry Ford II, a.k.a. “The Deuce,” thought he could jump-start the program by buying the best racing company in the world, Ferrari. Ferrari’s racing legacy started in 1919 with Enzo Ferrari’s experiences as a race driver in 1919, team manager in 1929, and manufacturer in 1947. Without question, racing was Ferrari’s lifelong passion. In 1948 he began producing and selling road cars to support his racing. By 1955 the production numbers grew to 306 vehicles, nearly a vehicle a day. Ferrari’s future looked bright, and his son Dino was groomed to take over from Enzo one day. Tragically Dino died on June 30, 1956. Ferrari was devastated. Every day for the rest of his life, Enzo visited his son’s grave. Perhaps the loss of his son made him open to talks with Ford in April 1963 to discuss a “plan of collaboration.” After a promising start, the negotiations fell apart when Enzo would not relent on having complete control over the Ferrari racing program. The suddenness and finality of the breakdown angered Henry Ford II, leaving him resentful at having been rebuffed. The Deuce vowed to get even…Thus was born the Ford vs. Ferrari wars. Ford turned to British race car builder Eric Broadley to redesign, with Ford’s assistance, his Lola Mark VI GT. In July 1963, work began on what would become the legendary GT40. Meanwhile, in California, Carroll Shelby was winning production GT races with his Cobra roadster, but he wanted more. The Texan, who won Le Mans in 1959 driving an Aston Martin, had been itching to beat Ferrari, but his Cobra roadster wasn’t fast enough. Since its inception in 1953, Ferrari had won the World Sportscar Championship 8 out of 10 years. Its mighty 250 GTO won the Championship in 1962 and 1963. It would be a tough challenge. One of Shelby’s employees, 28-year-old Peter Brock, thought he knew how to beat Ferrari. While working on the Corvette Sting Ray at GM, he had read papers written in the 1930s by German aerodynamicist Wunibald Kamm and knew he could get more speed, a lot VIRGINIA FESTIVAL OF THE WHEEL 2021
more speed, out of the Cobra roadster. In late 1964, Shelby gave Brock a crashed roadster and told him to go off in the corner of the Shelby American workshop and build the car. He had 90 days. In its first test session in February 1964, the new coupe design proved to be a vast improvement over the roadster. Just 15 days later, it dominated the Daytona race until a pit fire ended its bid for a debut win. The GTOs finished first, second, third, and fifth. Despite 3 class wins, including Le Mans, Shelby’s Daytona finished second to the Ferrari GTOs in the 1964 Championship. In November 1964, after a series of problems with the GT40, Ford replaced British-based John Wyer with Carroll Shelby to lead the charge against Ferrari using the Daytona and GT40. In 1965 the Daytona Coupe defeated the Ferrari GTO on racecourses worldwide, including Le Mans, and Shelby became the first American constructor to win the World Sportscar Championship. Nevertheless, his focus was on Le Mans, where his Ford team of six GT40s vied for the overall win against Ferrari’s eleven GTs prototypes. Alas, it was not to be. Ferrari finished first, second, third, sixth, and seventh with nary a Ford GT40 insight. The Deuce was not pleased. In 1966, Shelby dropped the Daytona Coupe program to concentrate on an overall win against Ferrari at Le Mans. The GT40 Mk I was replaced with a newly designed Mk II version, powered by Ford’s mighty 427 V8. It would go toe-to-toe with the gorgeous and fast Ferrari 330 P3. At the first race of the season, the 24 Hours of Daytona, the GT40s finished first, second, and third, a feat they repeated the next month at the 12 Hours of Sebring, soundly beating the Ferraris. Things were looking good for Ford at Le Mans, and The Deuce was not disappointed. The Ford GT40 soundly beat Ferrari’s best, finishing first, second and third and clinching the 1966 World Sportscar Championship. Ford went on to win Le Mans in 1967, finishing ahead of two Ferrari 330 P4s. Now for the rest of the story. After the 1967 victory, Ford ended its factory effort at Le Mans, and Enzo Ferrari never again competed at Le Mans as a factory team. Surprisingly, the smaller 4.7-liter engine GT 40 MK IIs won again in 1968 and 1969. Today a Ferrari GTO is the most expensive car in the world at $70 million. A Ferrari 330 P3, Shelby Daytona Coupe, or a Ford GT40 is worth a tenth of that. On February 24, 2021, Ferrari announced that it would return to Le Mans in 2023. —by Bob Vitrikas, Advisory Board Member, Virginia Festival of the Wheel

CLASSIC AND COLLECTIBLE CARS UVA CANCER CENTER
The UVA Cancer Center delivers advanced care using the latest research-based treatment options to improve quality of life. With state-of-the-art clinics in multiple locations around Virginia and telemedicine programs for rural communities, UVA Cancer Center is one of the most widely accessible cancer centers in the region. It is the only cancer center in Virginia nationally ranked by U.S. News & World Report and is ranked amongst the top 3 percent of cancer centers in the nation.
Catching Cancer Sooner with Screening Technology Getting screened is an important aspect to staying healthy. At UVA Cancer Center, they provide advanced screening options for a variety of cancer types, like the latest low-dose CT scan technology for lung cancer screening. The UVA Cancer Center also offers high-risk breast and ovarian cancer programs and a highrisk pancreatic cancer program, which monitor individuals with a family history of disease.
AN NCI-DESIGNATED LEADER IN ACADEMIC RESEARCH
CONVENIENT LOCATIONS FOR CANCER TREATMENT
As one of 71 National Cancer Institutedesignated cancer centers, UVA Cancer Center is part of a renowned group of leaders in cancer research, prevention, detection and treatment. They strive to stay ahead of the curve in innovation and technology that informs patient care.
Patients don't just have to visit the Emily Couric Clinical Cancer Center in Charlottesville. They can access care in other locations throughout Central Virginia, including clinics in Fishersville, Culpeper and Pantops.
STEM CELL TRANSPLANT PROGRAM
Serious illness may require a special kind of care focused on pain relief, symptom management and improving the quality of your life. Along with their care team, UVA's palliative care providers can help patients understand their care options and provide a holistic approach that offers emotional support as well as relief from symptoms and side effects.
In patients with blood disorders such as leukemia, their own stem cells produce abnormal, malfunctioning cells. In a stem cell/bone marrow transplant, healthy stem cells are transplanted to a patient after chemotherapy and/or radiation therapy. UVA's Stem Cell Transplant Program treats patients with these high-risk and lifethreatening blood disorders. The program has the highest level of accreditation, including Federation for Accreditation of Cell Therapy (FACT) and National Marrow Donor Program (NMDP)/Be The Match Registry approval.

THE VIRGINIA MUSEUM OF TRANSPORTATION The Official Transportation Museum of the Commonwealth of Virginia
T
he Virginia Museum of Transportation was initially the dream of Roanoke City Manager Arthur S. Owens. On April 2, 1962, Roanoke City Council approved a resolution to make that dream come true. The Roanoke Transportation Museum officially opened in the spring of 1963 at Wasena Park alongside the Roanoke River. In 1976 a not-for-profit 501(c3) corporation was formed to operate the Museum, and in 1983 it was designated the official Transportation Museum of the State of Virginian and became known as the Virginia Museum of Transportation. All was going well until the 100-year flood of 1985 destroyed the Museum and nearly all of its exhibits. Fortunately, the Museums prized J class #611 locomotive was not on location during the flood. The Museum Board pressed forward to re-establish the Museum, assisted by the Norfolk Southern Railway, which offered the Museum a fresh start in a portion of its former freight station located at 303 Norfolk Avenue in Roanoke. Norfolk Southern eventually donated the entire facility to the Museum, and it continues to operate at that location. Since the disastrous flood, the Museum has continued to improve and expand exhibits and educational opportunities, particularly for school-age children who often visit and large numbers. Today the Virginia Museum of Transportation proudly displays over 50 pieces of rolling rail stock in its outdoor pavilion and railyard, most of which are in some way related to the State of Virginia. Additionally, there is a newly renovated aviation gallery complete with dozens of exhibits and educational kiosks. The recently established automotive gallery will be of particular interest and enjoyment to attendees of the 34
Virginia Festival of The Wheel. The new gallery contains a changing exhibition of vehicles dating from the 1914 Ford Model T Touring to a 1996 General Motors EV-1 electric on loan from Virginia Tech. Other notable vehicles are the Museums 1920 Piedmont touring car manufactured in nearby Lynchburg and the 1956 Ford NASCAR convertible race car, driven by Virginia's very own racing legend Curtis Turner. The Virginia Museum of Transportation Board of Directors thanks you for supporting Virginia Festival of The Wheel and promoting our rich transportation heritage. We invite you to stop by and visit. —Tom Cox Board Member, Virginia Museum of Transportation The Virginia Museum of Transportation 303 Norfolk Ave, Roanoke 540-342-5670 • vmt.org Wednesday–Saturday 10am–5pm Sundays 1–5pm
