Black Tie Bash

Throughout the pandemic, outdoor weddings were made to be gorgeous while using the stars, trees and greenery all around to enhance the atmosphere. Since weather in Northeast Ohio is too unpredictable for that to continue long-term, fi nd a venue that has large windows to let in the moonlight during your reception. Lace or tulle wedding gowns and soft colored suits will round out the day nicely.

Wedding Day May 23, 2021 Glidden House | Cleveland

Today Ages: Both 37 Residence: Los Angeles, relocating to Pepper Pike in October 2021

How did you meet?

We’ve been friends since high school and stayed in touch while Madolyn lived in LA, and Michael lived in Washington, D.C., but the distance made dating impossible. Michael moved to LA last year after he started working remotely. We were both excited to reconnect – when Michael texted Madolyn to tell her he was moving to LA, she replied that “her jaw dropped.” We moved in together a couple of months after Michael arrived in LA, and the rest is history.

Do you have any interesting stories to share about getting to know one another?

When we first started dating, we went on a hike in the mountains outside of LA. It was a cold day, but we didn’t realize it would be snowing up on the mountain. By the time we got to the peak, it had snowed so much that we couldn’t see the trail to find our way back down. We got very lost several times on the way back, and weren’t exactly prepared or dressed for a blizzard. Michael was impressed by how calm Madolyn stayed under pressure throughout the hike, and Madolyn appreciated how concerned Michael was for her in an uncomfortable situation. Once we made it safely back to the bottom, we felt more connected than we’d ever been and had a feeling that we’d be facing many more of life’s challenges together.

How long did you know each other before you got married?

20 years.

When did you know you wanted to marry your partner?

Michael: As soon as we started dating I knew I wanted to marry Madolyn, but there were little things along the way that validated this feeling. We had an uncanny way of agreeing with each other on even the smallest of things, and laughed so easily together that it just felt right.

Madolyn: As soon as we started dating I knew I wanted to marry Michael, but there were little things along the way that validated this feeling. Seeing his love for his family and nieces, laughing while making up games in the middle of the night and dancing in the kitchen while cooking meals together solidified my feeling.

What was the best part of wedding planning?

Working as a team together. At different times, planning the wedding was both exciting and stressful. It gave us the opportunity to share a vision and work together to realize it. Ultimately, it was rewarding to see it all come together. We also really appreciated the support of our families – without their help and insights, we never could have pulled this off.

How did the pandemic a ect your wedding plan and wedding day?

We’d have had more out-of-town friends and family than we were able to because of the pandemic.

Were there any con icts between the two of you or your families in the planning process? Did either of you have to make any sacri ces?

We’re vegetarians and wanted to avoid serving meat at the wedding, which wasn’t ideal for all guests. Our favorite moment of the wedding was the yichud – the 10 minutes after the ceremony we spent alone together. Our engagement and the planning of the wedding had been a whirlwind, and now that we were finally married we took a few breaths together, reflecting on the wedding and our marriage, then looked forward to the celebration.
