68th Annual Humanitarian Award Celebration e Diversity Center of Northeast Ohio | 3
∆ ex-officio Member of the
Board

e Diversity Center of northeast

ohio

It is my pleasure to welcome you to The Diversity Center of Northeast Ohio’s 68th Annual Humanitarian Award Celebration. On behalf of the Board of Directors, I thank you for your ongoing support of the Center’s mission.

For nearly 100 years, The Diversity Center has been committed to building communities where all people are connected, respected, and valued. Our programs bene t thousands of young people and professionals in Northeast Ohio by teaching students how to become leaders and positive change agents in their schools and communities, and helping organizations to facilitate inclusive and productive work environments.

Tonight, we celebrate the incredible dedication of Darrell McNair and Dr. Tomislav Mihaljevic to this noble cause. Both of these men exemplify that teaching acceptance can build stronger, more inclusive communities.

Mr. McNair has been a tireless advocate of accessible and inclusive economic development, including his leadership with the President’s Council where he helped create strategic partnerships with corporate and government entities whereby enhancing growth and wealth creation opportunities for the minority business community.

The Cleveland Clinic, under the leadership of Dr. Mihaljevic, is committed to addressing structural racism and bias in our community. As an anchor institution in every community they serve, the Cleveland Clinic recognizes the health impact of racial disparities and works to eliminate them.

We also applaud our Honorary Humanitarian Dinner Co-Chairs – Mayor Justin Bibb, Milton and Tamar Maltz, Carole Hoover, and Fred Nance – and the Honorary Dinner Committee members who helped to make this event so successful. I especially want to thank our Board Co-Chairs, Jill Hennessey and Rob Soroka, for their incredible work over the past several months. Finally, we extend our sincere appreciation to our President and CEO, Peggy Zone Fisher, and to the sta of The Diversity Center. This event could not have happened without the hard work and dedication of these many individuals.

This Celebration not only acknowledges the remarkable contributions of individuals and organizations in Northeast Ohio, but is also the primary fundraiser for The Diversity Center’s School and Youth programs that serve to empower children with the skills and abilities to build inclusive classrooms and communities.

Systemic racism results in discrimination. Since we cannot simply pass a law to eradicate it, we must perseveringly work at recognizing and removing intolerance from our culture. Each of us has a responsibility to bring about fundamental and lasting change.

I cannot thank you enough for your support.

Welcome to the Diversity Center of Northeast Ohio’s 68th Annual Humanitarian Award Celebration.

Our sincere thanks to our Honorary Celebration Co-chairs, Mayor Justin Bibb, Milton and Tamar Maltz, Carole Hoover, and Fred Nance, Board Celebration Co-chairs Jill Hennessey and Rob Soroka, Master of Ceremonies Russ Mitchell, Channel 3 News Anchor, WKYC TV-3, our generous Sponsors, our remarkable sta , and our dedicated Board led by our extraordinary Chair, Tracie Longpre

We are especially proud to honor our 2022 Humanitarian Award recipients, Darrell McNair and Dr. Tomislav Mihaljevic. Each has advanced diversity and inclusion across Northeast Ohio through their exemplary civic, charitable, and professional leadership.

Thank you, Darrell and Dr. Tom, for allowing us to honor you this evening.

The Diversity Center of Northeast Ohio is the only organization in this region with a mission focused solely on directly addressing and eliminating bias, bigotry, intolerance, and racism and creating communities where all people are connected, respected, and valued.

Almost every day, we learn about hate-fueled violence, intimidation, harassment, or discrimination against someone because of the color of their skin, where they were born, whom they love, how they live, what they believe, or their identities.

Let us be clear. When that happens, it is an attack on all of us.

In the face of these increased challenges, I am moved every day by how we have adapted, innovated, and continued to develop and grow.

The increased demand for our programming, combined with the generosity of people and organizations like yours, has allowed us to expand our programming and reach more students and educators than ever before.

Our programs help thousands of children, teens, and young adults in 11 counties each year embrace their di erences and become change agents in their schools and communities. We also train educators to create learning environments that promote respect, acceptance, and inclusion.

Most importantly, without the support of each of you, our extraordinary work would not be possible.

With deep appreciation and gratitude,

The Diversity Center of Northeast Ohio

ABOUT THE DIVERSITY CENTER

The Diversity Center of Northeast Ohio was founded in 1927 as the National Conference of Christians and Jews (NCCJ). Our mission is to eliminate bias, bigotry and racism. We are the premier organization in our region o ering comprehensive diversity, equity and inclusion training. The Diversity Center is a member of the National Federation for Just Communities.

Each year, our combined programs reach more than 10,000 participants in 11 counties throughout Northeast Ohio. Our goal is to help individuals and organizations recognize, understand, appreciate, leverage and celebrate diversity.

OPENING MINDS WITH SCHOOL & YOUTH PROGRAMS

The Diversity Center’s student programs promote understanding, respect and inclusion through facilitated conversations, simulations and hands-on activities.

YouLEAD (6-12) and YouLEAD Junior (K-2 & 3-5) are our premiere on-site student leadership programs. Grounded in Social and Emotional Learning, these series of workshops promote the development of self and social awareness, relationship skills, self-management, responsible decision making, and action.

• YouLEAD and YouLEAD Junior workshops are ageappropriate, interactive and designed to encourage students to engage with peers, and create dialogue around various diversity and inclusion topics. We o er both onsite and virtual elementary, middle and high school programs.

• Middle and High School Conferences bring together groups of students and educators from diverse backgrounds to participate in a series of interactive, facilitated workshops and to share personal stories. Additionally, we are honored to partner with Cuyahoga Community College (Tri-C) and other local nonpro ts for the Con ict Resolution Youth Symposium each spring to facilitate educator and youth programming.

• Diversity Through the Arts integrates musical, visual, theatrical, and English language arts with lessons on inclusiveness and communication skills to promote creativity and leadership.

• Workshops for Educators and Youth Serving Adults works with schools and youth-serving nonprofits to foster healthy learning communities, and create classrooms where all are connected, respected and valued. We also provide strategic planning, 1x1 and group coaching, and consultation on developing inclusive and equitable policies and procedures.

• Culture and Climate Survey A school’s culture and climate re ects the behaviors, interactions, attitudes, norms, and perceptions within the school. As a way of gathering data on the climate for diversity, equity and inclusion, The Diversity Center utilizes an anonymous online platform to gather participant feedback data. This data is then analyzed and compiled into an analysis report which gives insight for next steps.

CHANGING LIVES WITH PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT & SUPPORT

• LeadDIVERSITY brings together a select group of professionals to engage with regional leaders and the greater community in order to raise participants’ awareness of diversity issues, build their leadership skills

and provide them with a tool kit to be advocates for diversity and inclusion.

• SHIFT Consulting is the professional services division of The Diversity Center of Northeast Ohio. We work with organizations to SHIFT individual behaviors, interpersonal interactions, management practices, procedures, and policies toward inclusion. These practices enable organizations to attract, recruit, engage, and retain the world’s best talent.

• Through our partnerships with business and community leaders, we support the development of inclusive work environments where all feel connected, respected, and valued

TESTIMONIALS

“I was very impressed and felt this Professional Development (PD) was well thought out and presented. I was pleasantly surprised, [school name] has a long and current history of not being accepting of race, culture and LGBTQIA. This was a great first step... and I hope it is continued.”

“Learning more aspects of the world. We need to respect each other using active listening and let our voices be heard. Being a leader means a responsibility to change the world in a better way.

This training has made me realize my impact on the community as a student leader. Now, I have the skills to responsibly navigate all manners of situations confidently.

This was a great program to make people understand not only how to be leaders, but to be effective ones.

The difference between saying something and doing something is efficient and reliable leadership.

Leading is ensuring everyone feels comfortable, open, and excited in a space to participate.

This training means a lot to me. It will help me to be a better facilitator in my life.”

“Art can be used as a medium for change due to the powerful messages it can provide, and makes bridges between past and present events.”

- Real Talk field trip to CMA

- Middle/High School Students (Mix of 8th-12th grade participants in Student Facilitator Training)

“The Task Force has been invaluable in connecting people, identifying opportunities for Justice, Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (JEDI) integration, and working to make JEDI values seen by district employees, students, and families. The student involvement has been so inspiring and would love to see that continue and grow.”

- Parent

“I loved all of it. We need to hear more about how much power we hold in helping to shape individual’s lives, and adjust. I loved all of it and would love more. Thank you for sharing your insights and providing the space for us to grow as people. I’d love to learn about more that I can do to get involved. Great PD.”
