On the cover:

“Current” (2023) by world-renowned sculptor Janet Echelman is a sky-high sculpture stretching 229 feet above Gay and High streets in Columbus. Echelman is a Tampa, Fla.-born Jewish fiber artist who sculpts at the scale of buildings and city blocks, according to her website. The design and installation of “Current” was funded by the Edwards family and donated to the Columbus Museum of Art; “Current” is part of its permanent collection. This represents the largest private contribution to public art in the history of Columbus, according to the museum. The sculpture, which is taken down for the winter and reinstalled in the spring, is composed of 78 miles of twine intricately woven into over 500,000 knots. Copyright Janet Echelman. Celebrating a year of milestones

As we reflect on the past year, we look back on an extraordinary journey marked by milestones in our local and global Jewish communities. Some milestones came with joy and pride, while others brought profound challenges.

As of when I’m writing this in late January, the Israel-Hamas ceasefire continues, but it certainly remains a fragile moment in the region. The hostage crisis and war have cast a shadow on our collective consciousness. Alongside this, our communities worldwide have endured a surge in public antisemitic sentiments and incidents. Yet, in these trying times, the resilience and generosity of our Jewish community have shone brightly. Whether in Columbus, Cleveland, Akron or beyond, we’ve stood together as a compassionate and interconnected people, demonstrating the strength of unity even in adversity.

This past year, we also had cause for celebration. In December, the Columbus Jewish News honored its sixth class of CJN 18 Difference Makers at the Jewish Community Center of Greater Columbus. Since 2019, we have recognized members of the Columbus Jewish community who encompass the values of tikkun olam – or repairing the world – and strive to make a difference in their community, marking another special occasion.

Celebrating these kinds of events is very important to the CJN, as they highlight the strong bonds and giving sensibility of our dynamic, innovative and generous Columbus Jewish community.

The milestones continue in 2025. Notably, for seven days and six nights, over 250 members of the Columbus Jewish community will call Israel home when they embark on JewishColumbus’ Israel 614: Columbus Community Mission this coming fall. Israel 614 is being presented in partnership with several community entities, allowing residents to deepen their understanding and connection

to Israel. We are looking forward to reporting on their trip in the CJN and at columbusjewishnews.com and relaying their takeaways to our readers and the broader community. Similarly, within these pages of SOURCE, we highlight the institutions and organizations that bind our community together. From nonprofits to local businesses, these entities are the backbone of the Central Ohio Jewish community, ready to assist in times of need and provide opportunities to engage and give back. Whether you’re looking for support or seeking to make a difference, SOURCE is here to connect you with the resources and causes that matter.

As we go forward in 2025, may we celebrate more joyous milestones together, and may our unity guide us through any challenges. With compassion, resilience and an unbreakable bond, we are, indeed, stronger together.

Here’s to a meaningful and impactful year ahead.

JEWISH HOLIDAYS and noteworthy dates

PURIM

Thursday, March 13 (begins at sunset)

Friday, March 14 (ends at nightfall)

The jolly festival of Purim is celebrated every year on the 14th of the Hebrew month of Adar (late winter/early spring). It commemorates the salvation of the Jewish people in ancient Persia from Haman’s plot “to destroy, kill and annihilate all the Jews, young and old, infants and women, in a single day,” as recorded in the Megillah (book of Esther).

PASSOVER

Saturday, April 12 (begins at sunset)

Sunday, April 20 (ends at nightfall)

The eight-day festival of Passover is celebrated in the early spring, from the 15th through the 22nd of the Hebrew month of Nissan. It commemorates the emancipation of the Israelites from slavery in ancient Egypt. By following the rituals of Passover, we have the ability to relive and experience the true freedom that our ancestors gained.

YOM HASHOAH

Wednesday, April 23 (begins at sunset)

Thursday, April 24 (ends at nightfall)

Holocaust Remembrance Day

YOM HAZIKARON

Tuesday, April 29 (begins at sunset)

Wednesday, April 30 (ends at nightfall)

Israel Memorial Day

YOM HA’ATZMAUT

Wednesday, April 30 (begins at sunset)

Thursday, May 1 (ends at nightfall) Israel Independence Day

SHAVUOT

Sunday, June 1 (begins at sunset)

Tuesday, June 3 (ends at nightfall)

Shavuot coincides with the date that God gave the Torah to the Jewish people at Mount Sinai more than 3,300 years ago. It comes after 49 days of eager counting, as we prepared ourselves for this special day. It is celebrated by lighting candles, staying up all night to learn Torah, hearing the reading of the Ten Commandments in synagogue, feasting on dairy foods and more.

TISHA B’AV

Saturday, Aug. 2 (begins at sunset)

Sunday, Aug. 3 (ends at nightfall)

The Three Weeks is an annual mourning period that falls in the summer during which we do not cut our hair, purchase new clothes, listen to music or hold weddings. It reaches its climax and concludes with the fast of the ninth of Av, the date when both Holy Temples were set aflame. This is the saddest day of the Jewish calendar, and it is also the date that many other tragedies befell our people. The fast of Tisha b’Av begins at sunset the previous evening. Besides fasting, we abstain from additional pleasures: washing, applying lotions or creams, wearing leather shoes and marital relations. Until midday, we sit on the floor or on low stools.

ROSH HASHANAH

Monday, Sept. 22 (begins at sunset)

Wednesday, Sept. 24 (ends at nightfall)

Rosh Hashanah is the birthday of the universe, the day G-d created Adam and Eve, and it’s celebrated as the head of the Jewish year. It’s celebrated with candlelighting in the evenings, festive meals with sweet delicacies during the night and day, prayer services that include the sounding of the ram’s horn (shofar) on both mornings and desisting from creative work.

YOM KIPPUR

Wednesday, Oct. 1 (begins at sunset)

Thursday, Oct. 2 (ends at nightfall)

Yom Kippur is the holiest day of the year – the day on which we are closest to God and to the quintessence of our own souls. It is the Day of Atonement –

“For on this day He will forgive you, to purify you, that you be cleansed from all your sins before God” (Leviticus 16:30). For nearly 26 hours – from several minutes before sunset on 9 Tishrei to after nightfall on 10 Tishrei – we “afflict our souls,” or abstain from food and drink, do not wash or anoint our bodies, do not wear leather footwear and abstain from marital relations.

SUKKOT

Monday, Oct. 6 (begins at sunset)

Monday, Oct. 13 (ends at nightfall)

For 40 years, as our ancestors traversed the Sinai Desert, following the Exodus from Egypt, miraculous “clouds of glory” surrounded and hovered over them, shielding them from the dangers and discomforts of the desert. Ever since, we remember God’s kindness and reaffirm our trust in His providence by dwelling in a sukkah – a hut of temporary construction with a roof covering of branches – for the duration of the Sukkot festival (on the Jewish calendar Tishrei 15-21). For seven days and nights, we eat all our meals in the sukkah and otherwise regard it as our home.

SHEMINI ATZERET / SIMCHAT TORAH

Monday, Oct. 13 (begins at sunset)

Wednesday, Oct. 15 (ends at nightfall)

The holiday of Sukkot is followed by an independent holiday called Shemini Atzeret. In Israel, this is aone-day holiday; in the Diaspora, it is a two-day holiday, and the second day is known as Simchat Torah. This holiday is characterized by utterly unbridled joy, which surpasses even the joy of Sukkot. The joy reaches its climax on Simchat Torah, when we celebrate the conclusion – and restart – of the annual Torah-reading cycle.

CHANUKAH

Sunday, Dec. 14 (begins at sunset)

Monday, Dec. 22 (ends at nightfall)

Chanukah is the Jewish eight-day, wintertime “festival of lights,” celebrated with a nightly menorah lighting, special prayers and fried foods. At the heart of the festival is the nightly menorah lighting. The menorah holds nine flames, one of which is the shamash (“attendant”), which is used to kindle the other eight lights. On the first night, we light just one flame. On the second night, an additional flame is lit. By the eighth night of Chanukah, all eight lights are kindled. Special blessings are recited, often to a traditional melody, before the menorah is lit, and traditional songs are sung afterward.

STAND TOGETHER

The Columbus Jewish community is at an exciting and PIVOTAL MOMENT. We are the fastest-growing city in the United States, projected to nearly double in size over the next 10 years. That means our Jewish community could grow to 50,000 people by 2035. We don’t just want to grow; we want to improve, and our ambitious goal is to create the BEST JEWISH COMMUNITY IN NORTH AMERICA .

This is a monumental task, a gift we can pass down from our generation to our children and grandchildren.
