HE’S QUIET and unassuming; she can talk a mile a minute. He’s dark; she’s a blue-eyed blonde. They are both talented and gorgeous. Together, this married couple from Russia has created one of Cleveland’s most respected high-end women’s clothing boutiques: Fyodor Atelier, at LaPláce. To my delight, I was able to do more than simply interview Fyodor and Marina Melnik for this story. I got to model some of their stunning creations, dresses so finely made and well-fitting, it was as if they had been designed for me personally. In fact, most of their clothes are custom-made one-of-a-kind, although a customer can buy off the rack. All clothes are made by hand; dresses range in price from $900 to $4900. While their collections include evening wear, mother-of-the bride (or groom) dresses, suits and coats, 50% of the business consists of wedding gowns. Fyodor, who designs all the clothes for the boutique, developed his love of fashion early in life. He grew up in an all-female household with two sisters and a mother who was a seamstress. “Fyodor respects women,” says Marina. “That’s why the clothes are so beautiful.” Marina runs the business end of the boutique; she also adds many of the finishing touches, such as intricate beadwork, to Fyodor’s creations. Her instinctive understanding of the industry has helped determine the direction of the business. What started in Russia with overcoats and suits grew to evening wear and bridal finery here in their adopted homeland. Fyodor Atelier’s clothes all share simple, clean lines that are best described as classic, insist the couple. They favor “modern” over “funky.” But the designs must be timeless and elegant. Surprisingly, one word you won’t find the Melniks use to describe their clothes is couture. “Couture is wonderful, great for entertainment,” explains Marina. “But it is not clothes for real people. It’s not wearable.”

Melniks use silk only for bridal dresses and other natural fibers for everything else. All fabrics come from France or Italy. Again, I marvel at the perfect drape of the dress. When a woman comes in for a dress, Marina says, Fyodor takes her measurements and sketches an idea. When she returns for the first fitting, the dress needs few changes. I have no trouble believing it. Next it’s on to the wedding dresses. I’m excited but a little nervous – surely that slinky number reminiscent of Carolyn Bessette Kennedy’s bridal gown will show every flaw I want hidden! Au contraire. When I look into the mirror, all I see is an unbroken line spun of figure-flattering silk charmeuse. “Before we create a dress, we think a lot,” says Fyodor. “We think about how it can make you look taller, thinner. We know what people want, and how they want to look.” Which explains why many of their clients will order a garment without even seeing a sample. The second wedding dress I try on is the most complex of the three. The Englishmade beading decorating the bustier is so finely intricate, it steals your breath. The dress’s multi-layered bustle took months to make; most gowns take Fyodor a week. The dress is simply magnificent, and at $4900, one of their most expensive creations. But my hunch is that a similar gown, if you could even find one with such exquisite beading, would cost at least double that in New York City. Indeed, many of their clients ask them why they don’t open a shop in Manhattan, since their clothes are often compared to

israelis create dramatic jewelry by ronna a. novello
NOTHING compares with the sun rising or setting over a beach in Israel. The play of light on the water and sand is breathtaking. It is this light and the sea that inspire the creations of jewelers Alice and Brian Bergner. The couple spends hours on the shore near their home in Caesarea, energizing their souls and recharging their creative juices. The Bergners will bring their collection of jewelry fashioned from gold, precious stones and antique glass to Cleveland Oct. 29 and 30 for an exclusive show at Treasures at the J, the Jewish Community Center’s gift shop. The couple didn’t intend to be jewelry designers. They met at Bar-Ilan University, where both were psychology majors. Alice soon found her way to the jeweler’s bench. Brian spent five years as a psychologist for the Israeli navy. When his service was completed, he joined Alice in the workroom. Nowadays, Alice is the primary goldand silversmith, while Brian handles the

the good news for fashionistas. But don’t think for a minute that it negates Fall 1. John Galliano (for Christian Dior) is showing his secondary line, which is loaded with designer touches but priced below couture prices. One of his very special looks is a crystal-embellished chiffon top paired with pants. A lot of those pants are very skinny, a look to definitely watch. Chanel and Valentino show luxe looks, and many of their hems are several inches above the top of the knee. It’s hard to imagine anyone past 40 not adjusting those hemlines to a more age or figurefriendly length. Also adding new choices to his original fall presentation is Jean Paul Gaultier. You’ll still see red primarily, but think plaids – bold plaids, small plaids and very colorful plaids – in addition to combinations of black, white and gray. Suits, both professional and after-five, are stunning, and I, for one, always feel very well dressed for any occasion in a suit. It seems far-fetched to mention denim in the same article as couture; however, denim is a fact of life, and jeans are its major focus. Think about adding a skinny 44

pair to your collection. Tuck them into a slim pair of kneehigh black boots. A real necessity this season will be all those wonderful accessories like leggings, purses, stockings, fashion jewelry, and shoes. Although not for everyone, leggings are a very important look. They can be youthful for the young person but good fashion for a lot of us who might want a pair to update last year’s skirt. Purses look fabulous with large ones the most fashion-forward. You’ll find any number of lookalikes inspired by couture, but at less than couture prices. Stockings are fun, and I have several trendy pairs, one of which is a large fishnet pattern with a flower vine up each side. It’s all in black and very special looking, and I do get compliments. If you opt for fishnets (an easy way to start in patterned stockings), wear them more comfortably by donning a pair of flesh-colored stockings underneath. The fishnets also last longer that way. Fashion jewelry is here to stay. Check out some of the greatlooking faux jewelry being shown. As for shoes, some of the stilettos now have ribbons that tie around the ankles. Belts complete your new look, and there are some fabulous ones in both real leather and plastic. In the film “The Devil Wears Prada,” the transformation of dowdily dressed Andrea, fashion editor Miranda’s assistant, was nothing if not dramatic. None of us has access to a free couture wardrobe as Andrea did, but by watching fashion trends and choosing wisely, you can improve your look and revel in your appearance! ▲ CLE VE LAN D J E W I SH N EWS

But finding clothes she can wear to her first job is much harder. “I have had many shopping trips where I came home with nothing,” admits Bonhard. “Pants are the hardest thing to find. They can be up to five inches too long.” Bonhard says she’s had success shopping at Gap, Express, and the Limited because they offer short, regular and long pants. Nordstrom is particularly concerned with solving the petite pants problem. “Our biggest focus is trying to find (the petite woman) the best bottom fit out there,” says Vanitha Nama-Lanoue, petite sportswear buyer for the Midwest and East Coast. “We hope every customer who walks in the door can find great pants, from career pants to jeans.” Whether or not to shop in the petite department seems to be a question of personal taste. Many petites enjoy the selections at Ann Taylor and Ann Taylor Loft. Some also have success at high-end specialty retailers like Audrey’s Sweet Threads, Fibres and Knuth’s, which carry a wide range of sizes. “The world is made for a size 8,” says Adamson, summing up the

go thrifting & have fun in the bargain by arlene fine
IN HER free time, Stacey M., a Beachwood teenager, likes to scan

the racks of upscale, trendy clothing shops or flip through tony fashion magazines. She notes what’s in, how much the items cost, and then, as she puts it, “I go on a treasure hunt and beat the system.” Stacey is a thrifter. “Finding bargains is my passion,” she says. “If this were a category on the SAT exam, I would have a perfect score.” Her bedroom closet is crammed with piles of so-cheap-you-gottahave-it treasures she discovered in her weekly forays to thrift stores (her favorite is Unique Thrift Store on Northfield Road), vintage clothing shops on Lorain Avenue (Suite Lorain tops the list), flea markets, garage sales and area consignment shops. “I would have been the perfect ‘Second-hand Rose,’” she says dramatically. Cleveland has many thrift stores and consignment shops to delight avid bargain hunters. Some sell only used clothing, and others combine new merchandise with gently worn garments. Piece Unique, a consignment store in Chagrin Falls, carries both new and pre-owned high-end clothing, accessories and furniture.
Piece Unique determines what to charge by taking the original price of an item and selling it for 1/3 of its retail value. Consignors get 50% of what the item sells for. Clothing brought in for consignment must be no more than two years old, on hangers, and dry cleaned or freshly laundered. Part of Siewiorek’s job is going through pockets before items are placed on the racks. “We have found everything from personal papers, eyeglasses, grocery lists, money and some unmentionables,” she says. “We always return everything we find.”
“We carry designer labels like Gucci, Prada, Donna Karan and Louis

every room in the house, and affordable household items.
The store also gets new golf and tennis wear from area country club pro shops that cannot carry the merchandise over for another season. Katie Charms loves the purse she found at Piece Unique.
“Our store is a riot,” says Jackie Rothstein,Thriftique vice president. “Everyday something is half off. We do anything to move the merchandise because we have such limited space. Many of our customers are addicted to our shop and come in daily for the specials.” But it is the NCJW annual Designer Dress Days sale that draws standing-room-only crowds. The designer, top-quality merchandise is gleaned from clothing and accessories that come in throughout the year to the NCJW warehouse in Warrensville Heights. These items are set aside in a special section awaiting the yearly sale. “We have brands such as Eileen Fisher, Escada, Ellen Tracy, Ellen Buchman, Michael Kors and St. John, just to name a few,” says Rosean

Last year Schmidt bought a threepiece brown toned Ralph Lauren outfit for $60. “It retailed for $250 the year before,” she says. “I love it, but after I have a season’s wear, I will donate it back. That’s part of the fun of the sale and makes room in my closet for more.” Vintage linens, original recordings, collector items, Depression glass, and brand name clothing as well as an assortment of tchotchkes can be found at the American Cancer Society’s Discovery Upscale/Resale Shop on Cedar Road. All proceeds from the store go toward cancer research. Savvy Discovery Shop volunteer Carol Spiegel offers the following advice for shoppers. • Don’t rush through the store.Take your time and enjoy your visit. • Most thrift stores have a no return policy. master bedroom. The well-traveled couple has always appreciated gorgeous bathrooms and amenities found in fine hotels. So, when she planned this house, a spa bath was high on the list. The room, which hugs the bedroom in a curve, has his-and-her sides, each with its own anteroom, sink and lavatory. His-and-her showers flank a glamorous Jacuzzi tub. A stunning, highly polished Dakota Jackson dressing table holds some of Sandy’s antique crystal and glass perfume bottles. Antique linens finish off the look elegantly. For the most part, the house has been everything Sandy and Gary thought it could be. “From the furniture to the antiques to the table settings, it all mixed together and fits just like a little puzzle,” she says. redesigning with decorative hardware by laura m. walter
CALL it “jewelry for your home.” The right cabinet or furniture hardware can make a big impact on a room’s appearance. Installing new handles, pulls, and knobs can give your room a makeover without resorting to the expense and hassles of full-scale remodeling. There’s no wrong way to go about selecting hardware, says Keven MacFarlane, the kitchen and bath manager of Lyndhurst Lumber. “It’s a very personal choice.” PHOTOS COURTESY / EDELMAN PLUMBING
Some homeowners, for example, want their hardware to sparkle and stand out in a room. Others prefer a more subtle look: perhaps sleek, nondescript pieces that are attractive but won’t demand attention. With individual hardware pieces ranging in price from a few dollars to a hundred dollars or more, you’re sure to find something that matches both your taste and your budget. Hand-rubbed bronze pieces mounted on light-colored cabinets are popular right now, but there’s no need to limit yourself to current trends. You can even choose novelty items, such as golf ball knobs for the golf nut or

It features two women, their faces reminiscent of Russian icons. “We like the mood of this painting, serenity mixed with sadness,” comments Roman. “We are drawn to art that represents the tortured Russian soul.” The step-down living room features a peaked ceiling paneled in light pine. Furniture, including a large eggplant leather sectional, is arranged to face the dramatic fireplace. Fronted with black marble and accented with strong vertical bands of mirror, it is the perfect spot to display a Martiros painting. This melancholy portrait of a woman is painted in cool blues and purples accented with gold. “In Russian art, gold symbolizes wealth, beauty and prosperity,” says Roman. “It comes from the application of gold leaf, and not every artist is trained to use it.” Guarding the raised hearth are two large Taiwanese wood elephants, a gift to Roman from one of his patients. “In Russia, elephants are symbols of good luck and health,” he explains. The Petroffs also collect art glass. Two graceful swirling pieces – 92

color. Customers are buying new rugs more often to enhance the look of their homes or to complement an existing design scheme.” According to Hamed, the colors driving the rug industry today are aqua, chocolate, cinnamon, sage, and olive. But if you don’t see what you want in your local rug dealer’s showroom, don’t despair – a rug can be custom-made to your specifications in any color or pattern that catches your eye. The dye used to color the wool is important. “Vegetable dyes are always far superior to their chemical counterparts,” says Jonathan Fields, owner of Rugtime. “When all the dyes are derived from the same source, they will age together perfectly.” Another consideration is the cost of the rug. What can customers expect to spend for a good rug? “A rug has to be affordable,” Fields emphasizes. “If the rug is very cheap, then most likely the quality of the piece is sacrificed. In general, buyers can count on prices of around $2500-$3000 for a good quality 8’ X 10’ rug, $2800-$3400 for an exceptional one.”
“Many of these rugs feature geometric or free-form designs,” says Glassman. “They may not be as ornate as a traditional Oriental, but they are very popular right now.”
Still, what makes a good rug a good rug? “Before you purchase a rug, you have to define what part of good you are looking for,” Gonsenhauser says. “Do you want a rug that is

AN INVITATION-ONLY sale at Kedem Sasson’s King George Street boutique in Jerusalem was a third birthday celebration for this elegant Jerusalem shop. The doors opened at 9 a.m. for Sasson’s special clients. In less than two hours, the shop, which is decorated with exotic art and spectacular, multicolored jeweled necklaces, was jam-packed with women of all ages, shapes and sizes. Israeli designer Sasson is known for his fashionable styles with special attention to plus and petite sizes. He is probably the most popular designer in Israel for “women of character,” as Sasson describes his clients. His dynamic creations affect and are affected by the personality of the wearer. CityMusic, above, performs free concerts throughout the city. Eugenia and Ronald Strauss, right, passionate supporters of classical music, founded the group. During the season, far right, 29-35 professional musicians perform with the orchestra.
CITYMUSIC Cleveland is an energetic young orchestra whose mission is to make high-quality, live classical music accessible to everyone in Northeast Ohio. Free of charge. It’s a mission the orchestra takes seriously; so seriously, in fact, that the term free doesn’t do justice to their efforts. Especially when one considers how much hard work this band of professional musicians and volunteers pours into every single concert. PHOTO / MARC GOLUB PHOTOGRAPHY

Orchestra conductor James Gaffigan puts the musicians through their paces at a concert rehearsal.
Gaffigan runs the orchestra through the program amiably but with focus, pausing to make a number of small but important refinements. He’s got plenty of points to make, and the players respond to his wishes instantaneously. Gaffigan, in turn, addresses questions and comments from the players. The effects of this collaboration become obvious as the Haydn Symphony quickly takes shape and soon starts to sizzle with rare urgency. “Everyone has a great attitude,” he says later. “I always tell them to feel free to make suggestions. The orchestra, too, seems comfortably dressed. One violinist wears an Elmo T-shirt. Casual attire not withstanding, these musicians are the real deal, and they’re here to work.

elegant, exquisite, stunning and innovative. Party aficionado Bob Gentile loves hearing that guests are still rehashing the finer points of an event. The owner of Sensational Celebrations, Gentile feels strongly that the smallest details make the biggest impression. Gentile approaches a party like a blank canvas, adding layers that complement each other to create an event where every subtlety comes together to create the perfect visual effect.
Invitations, menu cards and table numbers can all be customized with handcrafted layers, ribbon or flower buds. Handmade pieces come at a price – around $10 apiece, says Gentile. However, those on a more stringent budget are still in a position to throw an event with a “wow” factor. Catalogs and the Internet, for example, make it simple to find preprinted menu cards that coordinate with the overall look of a reception. “You can do things on a budget and still make them look good,” Gentile insists.

got a celebratory environment, says Linda Kotowski, store associate in charge of crafts at Playmatters. A party at a Playmatters toy store features a variety of craft activities geared toward the kids’ age group. Before the big day, the birthday boy or girl can select a craft project for the guests to make and take home. Collector boxes, toy trains or blocks are popular choices. Parents are asked to supply the refreshments, and Playmatters does the rest of the work so moms and dads can sit back and enjoy the party, Kotowski explains. What kid doesn’t love all things slimy and exploding? And what parent doesn’t want his kid to be smart? Say hello to Mad Science of Cleveland, dedicated to stimulating kids’ curiosity with interactive and educational science activities. It’s all about the “wow” factor at these parties – kids can get to see lightning up close, launch water rockets, and learn to make their own Mad Science slime, among other experiments and demonstrations.
No birthday party – big or small – is cheap, so if you want to save a few dollars, Lansky offers several suggestions. Try to avoid serving a full-blown meal at the party. Food gets expensive, and if you have the party in the mid-afternoon, you can get by with just some cake and something to drink. About that cake: it’s only icing deep to kids, and they don’t care if it costs $5 or $25, Lansky says. She also offers cost-cutting ideas in her book that can keep the kids entertained during the down times, like having them make their own party favors. No matter how great you think that snow cone machine is or how much trouble you went to putting a miniature drive-in movie theater together, it’s your kid’s big day. It’s not a day to discipline, and the guest of honor should have a definite say in how he or she wants a birthday celebrated, Lansky says. When it comes down to it, all the kids really want is their mom and dad’s attention, she adds. “You should do birthday parties,” Lansky says. “It’s like family vacations. These are the things kids will remember.”
▲
But even if you let a business handle things, a party can still get out of control. Fast. Playmatters has held parties with up to 24 guests – but Kotowski doesn’t recommend it, lest the guest of honor get lost in the shuffle.

THE kids have gone back to school, and you’ve probably already packed the swimsuits away. Still, it’s not too soon to start planning the next family vacation. “The key to getting the lowest price (for your vacation package) is to book far in advance … I’m talking a year in advance,” says Arlene Goldberg, owner and president of Action Travel Center in Solon. According to Goldberg, winter break is an extremely popular time for extended family vacations where multiple generations gather, often to mark milestones in life such as a grandparent’s 75th birthday, a golden anniversary, or even a bar mitzvah. Simplicity is the secret to a successful multi-family or extended family vacation. People are “looking for simple vacations because it’s so hard to get everyone together,” Goldberg explains. The simpler you make the itinerary, the better chance you have of getting everyone on board for the trip. For instance, Goldberg recommends booking only direct flights for groups traveling with young children. Cruises are probably the most popular and easiest trips for families. Everyone is in one contained place, children’s clubs accommodate toddlers through teens, and “members of the family can roam in the day and gather back at night for dinner,” Goldberg says. Because cruises offer dining assignments, larger families can breathe easy knowing they will have seating together each night. Plus, “so much is included (in the price) that a cruise is an extremely good value for what you get – accommodations and three meals-plus a day.” For Northeast Ohioans, the most popular winter break cruise destination is the Caribbean and its many islands, Goldberg notes. “Most people want warm weather.” An Alaskan cruise gives the Caribbean destinations competition during the spring/summer season, and interest in New England/Canada cruises is growing. Stops on these northern cruises include Boston; Bar Harbor, Maine; and Halifax, Nova Scotia. All-inclusive resorts are also a smart choice for multi-generation

Club Med was a pioneer in the all-inclusive resort concept and continues to be a top choice. It has locations worldwide (including Punta Cana and Cancun, for those direct flights) and one in the US in Sandpiper, Fla., where tennis and golf are the focus. Club Med also helped pioneer the concept of children’s clubs and offers families three age levels of youth activities: toddlers (2-4); school-age (4-11); and teens (11-17). Infant day care is also available. For those whose ideal vacation doesn’t include a sandy beach and tropical drinks, Goldberg recommends a “Fly

COMFORTABLE and luxurious are the two adjectives that come to mind when describing the 2007 Lexus ES 350.The entry-level luxury cruiser is big, spacious, and engineered for quiet motoring. However, the new Lexus is not just about giving drivers a smooth ride while ensconced in a roomy, cushy interior. This cozy sedan also packs a surprising wallop under the hood. The ES comes equipped with a new, 3.5-liter V-6 engine. With a fine-tuned powertrain offering 272 horsepower and 258 lbs.-ft. of torque, the ES is still a fair ways off from the smaller, sportier Lexus IS (306 hp). Nevertheless, performance is good; with that amount of power under its hood and a six-speed automatic with manual mode to shift the gears, the ES can still hit 60 mph in 6.7 seconds, plenty fast for a vehicle of this type. Those looking for a quiet ride will not be disappointed. The cruiser handles well during both residential and freeway driving, and the interior picks up very little engine noise. The ES is also bigger inside than previous models. It rests on a wheelbase two inches wider than before, which translates into extra room both front and back. The new ES offers more luxury options than before. For the first

AS AN enterprising 16-year-old high-school sophomore, Doug Katz was catering 100-person events out of his mother’s Shaker Heights kitchen. Now 36, he is still in the kitchen in Cleveland – this

after three years to open fire in 2001. Katz has traveled from the University of Denver to The Culinary Institute of America in Hyde Park, N.Y., to restaurants in Boston, Portland, Aspen and back home to Cleveland. His reign as a foodie
and his knack for giving simple ingredients a delectable flair seems a natural path for Katz, who says his family “always put food first.” Even their travels were centered around where and what they would eat. Simplicity is the operative word at fire, named for the word used in a kitchen to let the cooks know it’s time to fire up the grill and start cooking. Fire serves “great, simple American food prepared by professional chefs in a professional atmosphere,” says Katz. The word fire also inspires thoughts of a warm, inviting atmosphere – one which the upscale restaurant aspires to emulate. Fire’s menu changes to highlight recipes based on in-season ingredients that are usually purchased at the North Union Farmers Market. “We get ideas on what we want to use that season from the market,” says Katz. “We make it as simple as we can to highlight the ingredients.” As cultivators of his passion for food, Katz’s parents, Linda and Robert, play important roles in his business – Robert, as an occasional helping hand for Sunday brunch and Doug
Linda as his “biggest marketer and quality controller,” says Katz. With Robert’s help, Katz and the fire crew made 600 jars of pickles that will appear on the menu. Pickles are sure to go fast when Linda employs her role as “Jewish mother” and “tells everyone how great the restaurant is,” says her son. Since time away from the restaurant is limited, the kitchen is not a likely place to find Katz after hours. Eating out is more his speed, and he favors restaurants in Tremont.
