Great ESCAPE East 4

By Kelsey Larson

W

hile downtown Cleveland has been buzzing with activity since the Horseshoe Casino opened this spring, there are other neighborhoods nearby that have, for years, been a thriving destination for a fun night out. East 4th Street is perhaps best known as the home of Iron Chef Michael Symon’s flagship restaurant Lola’s, which is reason enough to venture downtown. However, many don’t realize the variety of dining and entertainment options available on this chic street. If you’re looking for something to do on a quiet, sunny weekend day, East 4th and Yoga is the place to be. Saturday mornings feature complimentary yoga classes starting at 10 a.m., with free valet parking on location. After class, pop into Erie Island Coffee Co. for a sample of its five specialty artisanroasted beans. Traditionally trained baristas craft lattes with intricate artistic patterns,

and there is plenty of seating and ample outlets for setting up a computer to work or to just shop online. If the coffeehouse scene isn’t for you, instead head to CLE Clothing Co. to browse its unique and fun Clevelandthemed items. From the comical “(216) Respect the Code” shirts, to the cliche (but still amusing) “Cleveland Rocks” logo, to unique Indians, Browns, and Cavs apparel, you’re sure to find something to admire. While there is plenty to do during the day, East 4th Street comes alive in the evening hours. For music fans, House of Blues offers a variety of local and nationally recognized groups. Standing-room tickets on the main floor are great if you’re looking to dance the night away, while seating in the balcony is perfect for relaxing with a glass of wine. Dine at the restaurant or bar before the show (corn bread with maple butter is a personal favorite) for early entrance to the concert venue.

| jstyle | F ALL 2012

For groups, The Corner Alley provides food, drinks, and fun for a reasonable price. Twelve lanes of upscale (read: clean, modern, and stylish) bowling require early reservations, with waitresses for each lane to offer delicious food from the attached 4th Street Bar & Grill or Corner Alley’s Martini Bar. This venue also offers private party space (including private lanes and bar) for larger events. For a first date, Hilarities is a great way to break the ice. In one of the largest madefor-comedy-only theaters in the country, customers enjoy national stand-up comedians with reasonably priced tickets, including some dinner and a show packages. Pickwick & Frolic, associated with Hilarities, is the perfect spot to unwind after a show. This venue hosts Ohio’s only champagne bar (ideal for girls’ night out), an award-winning martini bar (when you’re channeling James Bond), and a murder mystery dinner theater (on par with any in the country). Although East 4th Street offers days’ worth of entertainment, the dining options are even more numerous. Featuring both locally and nationally renowned chefs, foodies enjoy innumerable delectable dishes from a traditional Irish pub (Flannery’s) to modern rustic Italian (Chinato) to creative Vietnamese dishes (Saigon). Zocalo features fresh Mexican-inspired items and the largest tequila menu in Cleveland. If homegrown is more your speed, check out The Greenhouse Tavern, the first certified green restaurant in Ohio. Valet parking ($8 plus tip) covers the entire evening, with convenient location on site. Every dining and entertainment option could not be included given the scope of this fun neighborhood, so head to East 4th Street to experience the original downtown hot spot for yourself.

or this fall, shopping is “all about versatility and getting the most wear out of a piece you can,” says Hallie Bram, marketing director at Saks Fifth Avenue in Beachwood. One of her store’s fall campaigns is the “season of the dress,” because so many women like the convenience of putting on a dress in the morning. Bram says burgundy and black are both popular colors in this season’s fashion lineup. A black sheath dress like one with a detachable knitted cowl neck Saks carries from Akris Punto can be worn with a white button-down or turtleneck shirt underneath it or a jacket over it and black tights during the day. At night, Bram suggests wearing it “with a pair of great pumps.” “Leather is a huge trend for fall,” says Bram, which is reflected by the patent-leather piping on the dress’s armholes. If you think jackets are boring, think again. Modern takes on the typical pea coat include another key trend for the season: a peplum bottom, which flares from above the waist. Bram highlighted a burgundy jacket by Burberry London with a leather accent on the back. “This would look fantastic with leggings and boots, and turtleneck,” she says. “It’s versatile

because it can be outerwear or as inside wear on a cold day.” Updated blazers are another option. Bram recommends one by Theory. “This one is fantastic because it could be worn by a stylish businesswoman or for night,” she says. “It has leather sleeves and zipper details to it, so it’s kind of edgy.” It could be worn with pants and a button-down shirt or with a dress for night. For jeans, Bram recommends the fall palette offered by J Brand jeans. It’s a “staple” skinny jean you can wear with boots, heels, or flats, dress up with an evening top, or wear to a casual workplace. “One of the most fun things we’re selling is a ruched pant,” says Bonnie Chernikoff, owner of Bonnie’s Goubaud in Woodmere. You don’t have to hem it, and it pulls into the length you want.” Chernikoff said this season’s pants are “slim and trim” unless they’re really wide, dressy pants in a flowing fabric. Those can be worn with dressy tops. Some of her favorites have open shoulders and Swarovski crystals. Overall, she is seeing “a lot of jewel tones this fall, purples and royals,” and “cashmere sweaters are always popular.”

Update your outerwear Chernikoff describes the latest winter coats as “fashion-forward” in waist to hip lengths or even longer with bell sleeves and a closer fit. “More sleeves are belled, rollup, ruched,” she says, noting they “don’t look like what was in your closet.” Clothing manufacturers are appealing to customers who like variety with reversible designs. “Reversible is hot,” says Chernikoff. “You get two for the price of one.” To go with those coats, she is seeing hats, earmuffs and other winter necessities in microfiber, shearling and fur.

side, coin pearls, often-dyed flat pearls smaller than a dime, are popular. “Leather-wrap bracelets with or without stones also give you a real wow factor,” she says.

Accessorize The black and burgundy color scheme carries over to fall’s must-have accessories. The Saffiano Lux by Prada in bordeaux is the “classic Prada-stamped calfskin in a deep burgundy color that will look red in some lights and blacker in others. It’s perfect for day but small enough for evening, a go-everywhere bag,” says Bram. For formal events or just going out to for a nice dinner, Bram says this YSL clutch in black patent leather is an evening staple. To keep your toes on trend, Bram suggests a black-and-gray leopard print pair of YSL shoes. “Smoking slippers are a hot flat trend,” she says, “and Prada makes one with a nice deconstructed bow on it.” Chernikoff highlighted shoes by BeautiFeel. “They’re the most comfortable and stunning shoes,” she says, “and they’re made in Israel.” For jewelry, Chernikoff says “big hunky, chunky necklaces are in,” and she sees many on TV. shopper holds up a colorful, striped skirt to herself in front of a mirror and declares aloud her delight with the knee-length piece before enthusiastically walking to the fitting room to try it on. Scenes like this commonly unfold at malls, lifestyle centers or department stores, where national retailers stock their shelves with mass-produced clothing deemed to be the season’s most fashionable. But this particular shopper wasn’t at any of those places. Instead, she – along with several other customers – was traversing the hardwood floor of a small, sun-filled Ohio City storefront surveying shirts, skirts and sweaters that were first fashionable the ’40s, ’50s and ’60s and ’70s. Not only that, but also this clothing was born in Cleveland. The racks and hangers were filled with pieces designed and produced by Ohio Knitting Mills, which for three generations was overseen by the Stone-Rand family.

Share your story for book Gary Rand, of Ohio Knitting Mills, and Marc Frisch, of H.E. Frisch Knitting Mills, are compiling information for a book that details the history of the garment industry in Cleveland. If you have information or a personal story to share, Rand requests that you contact him at 216-378-9509 or therandgroup@ sbcglobal.net.

Ohio Knitting Mills clothing comes in many designs and colors.

On the verge of disappearing for good, the company started to experience a rebirth a few years ago when Steven Tatar entered the picture. After being introduced to what remained of the decades-old company – and the history behind it all – the 53-year-old Cleveland Heights resident almost immediately immersed himself in revitalizing Ohio Knitting Mills. “The fact that it’s within the family and was a Cleveland Jewish manufacturer was a very big part of what I saw and what inspired me,” said Tatar, a member of Kol HaLev in Pepper Pike. “I want to be able to tell and represent the whole narrative of this multigenerational story.”

Where it all began The story of Ohio Knitting Mills starts 85 years ago, when Harry Stone founded Stone Knitting Mills in 1927. The business opened in what once was the National Screw complex at 7510 Stanton Ave., on Cleveland’s East Side. In 1947, Stone Knitting Mills was liquidated, and almost immediately following, Ohio Knitting Mills was started by Stone; his son-in-law Leonard Rand, who then took over day-to-day oversight of the company; and a business partner, Henry Rubin. A third generation began to oversee the family business in 1968 when Gary Rand came aboard shortly after graduating from the Philadelphia College of Textiles and Science and working in the apparel industry in New York City. Following the sale of National Screw that same year, Ohio

Knitting Mills moved to a new building at 1974 E. 61st St. “That was the old Rich Sampliner Knitting Mills in the early 1900s,” said Rand, now 67 years old and living in Moreland Hills. “That’s where my grandfather (Stone) started when he was a teenager as a floor sweeper and salesman.” When Ohio Knitting Mills moved, all of its equipment and machinery moved with it. All told, the company occupied about 130,000 square feet – almost the entire building. “That building was (also) a coat factory called Printz-Biederman until 1967,” said Rand, a member of Suburban Temple-Kol Ami in Beachwood. “In the interim, my father and part of the Ratner family bought that building. When we had to move out of National Screw, we moved into that building and bought out the Ratner interest.”

Cleveland garment industry Cleveland was once home to a bustling garment industry. At its peak in the mid-20th century, the mills – of which there were as many as 18 – employed about 8% of the working population in the Greater Cleveland area, Rand said. “It was viable,” he said of the industry. “It was very productive. It was mostly family-owned; you had companies like Lampl Fashions, Bobbie Brooks, Lion Knitting, Dalton, Bamberger Reinthal and H.E. Frisch.” Ohio Knitting Mills was prominent among these business, however, the company’s name never appeared on anything it Continued on page 16 C l evel a n d J ew is h N ew s

made. Instead, the products sported labels belonging to stores like Sears and Montgomery Ward or brands like Pendleton and Jack Winter, Tatar said. Fueled by a post-World War II population and industrial boom – and subsequent expansion of the middle class – the market for

stylish clothing grew exponentially. Ohio Knitting Mills clothing helped supply that demand, Tatar said. “It was never made as couture. This was affordable clothing for the masses, but it was also fashion for the masses,” he said. “The American Dream was coming true for a number of people.”

But as the turn of the century approached, the world market was shifting, and a number of industries that for decades had called Rust Belt cities like Cleveland home were fleeing the industrial Midwest. “By the end of the 1990s, the apparel industry had disappeared from Cleveland,” Tatar said. Over the years, Cleveland’s population and economic declines mirrored that of the garment industry. “Over the period of 35 to 40 years we owned that building, a lot of the property around it became distressed and abandoned,” Rand said. “We bought up all the properties along Euclid Avenue and East 59th Street.” In the early 2000s, Rand was approached by the city of Cleveland, which was interested in buying the property to make way for a new biotech center, he said. “It took about two years to make the deal, and in the interim, my father passed away and I ran the mill for another year and a half,” said Rand, adding that Ohio Knitting Mills also lost a “major customer” during that time. “So, it came time to do the deal with the city and close it down.” Not long after, in 2005, Tatar was part of a marketing committee that was scouting locations to hold an annual meeting, and by coincidence, he discovered the Ohio Knitting Mills building. “I’d never heard of Ohio Knitting Mills,” he said. “When I came into the factory, they still had a couple of machines working, and they were still sewing in a couple of places – and that fascinated me.” Tatar subsequently asked to talk to someone in charge, which turned out to be Rand. “He was inquisitive, and we had some family connections,” Rand said. “We hit it off right away.” Said Tatar: “We chatted, had lunch, and he told me that one of the things they (still) had were sweaters – one, two, three of everything they made from World War II on. Needless to say, I was interested. “I realized when he showed them to me that they were A) amazing, gorgeous and cool, and B) there were thousands of them,” Tatar said. “It was like a core sample of great fashion. I thought, ‘Wow, this is really something special.’ ... To find thousands of pieces from over five decades is like finding King Tut’s tomb.” After discussing the matter, Tatar and Rand worked out an option agreement, which “essentially gives me exclusive rights to buy and sell archived material,” Tatar said. “We’re keeping a core collection,” he added. “We came to the conclusion that this is an important record, and we should preserve it.” Tatar’s background is as a brand strategist, and like Rand, he has familial ties to a design-based business: three generations of his stepfather’s side of the family oversaw a glove factory in New York. “So, I have empathy for the story,” said Tatar, referring to the Stone-Rand family and Ohio Knitting Mills. “I feel responsible to honor that trust, and also, if someone doesn’t tell that story, it becomes forgotten history. It’s not something people can participate in.” Continued on page 18

Bright lights, big city Tatar started telling the story of Ohio Knitting Mills in October 2006, when he opened a boutique store in Brooklyn, N.Y. “We started in New York because that’s where brands start,” he said. “Within a week, journalists and bloggers were writing our story.” The shop enjoyed success in Brooklyn, but in spring 2008, as economic conditions worsened, Tatar realized the retail market was shifting. “Fortunately, I’d just signed a book deal,” he said. In the months following the closing of the Brooklyn store, Tatar penned “The Ohio Knitting Mills Knitting Book,” which featured 26 clothing patterns and touched on the company’s history. The book was finished in 2010, released in summer of that year, and promoted by Tatar at events in cities across the country. As that wrapped up, Tatar said he felt it best to return to the marketplace. “It was time to get back out there,” he said, noting a desire to return to Ohio Knitting Mills’ roots. “New York is the place to launch a brand, but Cleveland is a place to launch development.”

Following the success of the book, Tatar was approached by Gordon Square Arts District organizers, who asked if he’d be interested in opening a pop-up shop in the heart of Cleveland’s revitalized Detroit-Shoreway neighborhood. Tatar agreed, and Ohio Knitting Mills’ first temporary storefront opened its doors for three months during the 2010 holiday season. Tatar wasn’t sure what to expect but was pleasantly surprised with the results. “People in Cleveland really showed up; people came in and supported me,” Tatar said. “I didn’t know if Cleveland would step up, but it did. ... It made me realize Cleveland was ready. “Gordon Square put me back in front of customers, and that was inspiring,” he said. “The 2010 experience told me I had to keep doing this. I had to keep showing up.” The following winter, Tatar opened his second pop-up shop, this time at a space belonging to design firm TWIST Creative at 1983 W. 28th St. in Cleveland’s Ohio City neighborhood. Greater fanfare surrounded the Ohio City opening, including a billboard at the corner of Carnegie Avenue and East 18th Street wrapped in a 24-foot sweater made from unused Ohio Knitting Mills materials. “The result was awesome,” said Tatar, referring to the winter 2011 pop-up shop. “We did better here during those two months than in post-crash Brooklyn.” Tatar’s third and most recent pop-up shop was open from June to July, again in the TWIST Creative space. A fourth pop-up shop is scheduled to open during the holiday shopping season in Ohio City. In addition to the retail success the pop-up shops have experienced, Tatar said he’s had additional success in re-introducing Ohio Knitting Mills to Clevelanders. “Some of the most heartwarming moments are when people come into one of the (pop-up shops) and say ‘My grandmother

The next generation This growing awareness of the clothing and the story behind it brings Tatar’s vision for Ohio Knitting Mills one step closer to reality. “We’re getting closer and closer to where Ohio Knitting Mills is making really cool clothing in Cleveland, and the difference between then and now is that we’re calling it Ohio Knitting Mills,” he said. “Long-term, we’d like Ohio Knitting Mills to be a household name and a valued brand around the world.” Tatar said he realizes Ohio Knitting Mills represents something bigger than him, his book or the pop-up shops he puts together, and he modestly considers himself the “fourth generation” of the company. “From Day 1, my intent was ‘Can we find a way to move forward and create a clothing brand built around the archive?’” he said. “We have all the DNA of a design language that’s distinctive, and we can combine that with the culture and the heartland industrial craftsmanship. “Everything about the look and feel (of the clothing) is compelling, but when you tie that to the immigrant experience ... a lot of what I recognized (from the beginning) is that whole package,” Tatar said. “We want to focus on the brand – the objects, what they represent and where they’re from.” Rand, who feels a window for clothing manufacturing in

worked here in the 1940s. Do you have any pictures?’” he said, explaining that there exists several photos from Ohio Knitting Mills’ heyday. “People start crying when they see these pictures.”

Ohio Knitting Mills’ summer pop-up shop closed in July. The next pop-up shop is scheduled to open winter 2012 at the same location in Cleveland’s Ohio City neighborhood.

America may be reopening, is optimistic about Ohio Knitting Mills’ new direction, and is pleased that the story of his family’s company is continuing on. “It’s emotionally good,” he said. “It’s carried on my family’s tradition and my grandfather’s legacy.”

ooking for ways to add some polish to everyday makeup and hairstyles? Want to transform a daytime casual appearance into an evening sensation? Local stylists and makeup artists offer tips on how to notch up your look from good to great, whether you’re wearing a suit, jeans, cocktail dress or evening gown.

Hair, Makeup Tips Add up to Perfection

John Anthony Marinucci, creative director of Studio MZ Salon and Spa, advises simple twists to make a powerful look or hair down for a flirtatious look.

>> Short vs. long

Dina Culotta, a stylist with Ladies & Gentlemen Salon and Spa, gives stylist Katie Baxter a fishtail braid, a glamorous style that’s perfect for special occasions.

>> Start talking hair There’s no need to do anything that feels unnatural, even for an evening event, according to hair stylist Dina Culotta of Ladies & Gentlemen Salon and Spa at Legacy Village in Lyndhurst. “I think first and foremost of the client’s comfort level,” Culotta says. “It’s extremely important for a person to talk to her hairdresser. I stress to my clients that they talk about themselves. I like it when clients bring pictures of things they like and what they don’t like.” Clients should also discuss the clothes they’ll be wearing when choosing a particular hairstyle. When preparing for a special occasion, look at hair trends featured in “red carpet” events, says Culotta. “Google the Oscars, Golden Globes and MTV music awards. You’ll see the trends. The biggest ‘no-no’ is that you don’t want people to say ‘that’s 1989.’” Some of the latest glamorous hairstyles include waterfall and fishtail braids, Culotta says. “They’re a great way to make things more interesting. They can spice it up, even with long, straight hair. They’re great for kids, too.” To some extent, clothes dictate hairstyles, Culotta says. For example, clients wearing suits are often professionals looking for a sleek, softer look and low-maintenance hairstyle. “They don’t want their hair to be a distraction. Tendrils will not work for an office.” 20

“Simply taking a ponytail and twisting it up creates power,” says John Anthony Marinucci, creative director at Studio MZ Salon and Spa in Woodmere. Suits are “power clothes,” he said. Those wearing them often have shorter hair or they’ll wear long hair in an up-do. “We’re seeing a lot of that influence in ‘Mad Men,’” he said, referring to the Emmy-winning AMC cable television show that’s set on Madison Avenue of the 1960s. “Wearing your hair down doesn’t give a woman the power she needs. It looks too casual. “For evening … that’s the time you should be wearing your hair down,” Marinucci says. “Evening is a more romantic, feminine, flirtatious time. You want to use your feminine characteristics to soften your look.” Those with short hair can finish it with a shine or gel “to make it jump up. For long hair, you want to have curls or waves. What’s currently popular is to wear it to one side or the other in a twist or braid. That’s beautiful!” Hair extensions are also in style, Marinucci said. “On the West Coast, everyone’s getting into extensions, although they’re not for everyone. If you don’t do the complete package, it doesn’t look good.” Often a haircut and style is needed for an extension to look natural, he said. If there’s a “no-no” among hairstyles, it is to wear a miniskirt or short dress and very long hair, Marinucci specifies. “It shrinks you. For me, it doesn’t make sense.” “You can take a ‘don’t’ and on the right person, it’s a ‘do,’” says makeup artist and hairstylist Laura Zeltner of Z Beauty LLC in Bratenahl. Hairstyles are somewhat dictated by the size and shape of the face. “Right now a simple up-do is a high bun. That’s a style that works well on someone with long hair and smaller features. It doesn’t work on someone with a larger head and features. It takes a collaborative effort with your stylist to find a style that best suits the individual. Just because a style is current doesn’t mean you have to wear it.” Continued on page 22

As hairstyles multiply and shift, so do makeup trends. “Most women feel confused when they see a variety of color options,” Zeltner says. “There are so many options now and a new makeup line every week. “During summertime, it’s always good to go for a warm tone or sun-kissed look,” Zeltner advises. When looking for foundation, consider your personal skin tone, whether it is pink, yellow or golden, she says. “It’s best to go where you can try before you buy to make sure you have a good match,” Zeltner says, noting that skin tone changes throughout the year, even when using sunblock. “Your summer color will be at least a shade or two deeper than your winter color. For a “polished look,” Zeltner says to start with mascara. “That automatically makes you feel your eyes are more visible.” Then, put some color on your face. “Whether you’re a bronzer person or a blush person, it adds polish.” And, for the lips, she says, “Do something, whether it’s lipstick or gloss. Just putting it on makes you feel better. Even if you’re a minimalist, you still need more polish. “With more time, take each a step further,” Zeltner says. “Work with eye colors and shadows,” as well as different shades of lipstick or gloss. “You may add lashes in the evening.” Several options are available for applying facial color, including foundation, tinted moisturizer and pressed powder. Eyebrow shaping and pencil also add a finishing touch, Zeltner says. “The eyebrows are like the frame to your eyes. Everyone has a different brow shape. Have your brows sculpted and groomed. If they’re sparse, fill in with a taupe brow pencil. It works for everyone.”

Makeup artist Elizabeth Snyder says to consider the company and the occasion before choosing a look.

>> When and where? When selecting makeup, consider the time of day, venue and clothes, says Elizabeth Snyder, a freelance makeup artist at www. ESnyderMakeupArtist.com. “Day is going to be clean and natural,” she says. “We ladies will usually like to enhance our features softly.” For evening, Snyder advises, “Pick a certain feature to take the spotlight and run with it. Whether it is adding a darker, smudgier eyeliner and a set of lashes or amping up your lips with an en vogue bold lip color. But only choose one feature to focus on to avoid looking overdone.” “Business makeup” for the working woman “is usually kept very minimal, basic and clean, but perfected,” Snyder says. By contrast, “social makeup is a little more fun, depending on the social occasion: Maybe a touch of an ultra-shiny lip gloss and a cat-eye-lined eye or a fun Kim Kardashian-esque smoke eye. Just keep in mind the company you’ll be keeping and the occasion.” Also consider what you’re wearing, Snyder says. “A more plain outfit, I feel, can take on a more bold and statement-making face. Rock a classic, red lip or dramatic eye within your comfort zone. Busier patterns call for a more structured, clean look to balance out the pattern.”

Careful color selection is needed when choosing blush colors, Snyder says. “There are basic colors a certain skin tone should stick with: Fair complexion, use sandy pink tones and soft apricot; medium complexion, bronze and neutral pinks; tanned complexion, deep, bronzed rose; olive complexion, golden brown, rich rose and plum shades. For a dark complexion, try deep red and dark bronze.” Snyder also individualizes eye shadow: For gray or blue eyes, use copper, bronze, brown, pewter or deep charcoal. For hazel eyes, use soft pale mint, rich green, emerald, or rich reddish brown. Colors for green eyes include raisin, deep plum, soft lilac and plum gray. “Brown eyes can basically pull off anything,” Snyder says. Enjoy shades of blue, gray, deep plum, purple, copper, rich brown and black. Best tips for redheads: Use green soft copper and reddish brown or bronze eye shadow and light coral or natural lips. “Here’s a pro tip,” Snyder shares: “Line the top eyelid with a brown pencil. It helps bring out the eyes while still being beautiful, soft and less harsh than a black pencil.”

What’s my

style

You don’t have to be a movie star or fashion icon to have style. Jstyle asked out-and-about Clevelanders to describe their personal style and offer fashion tips we can all use.

Rebecca Levine

By Gina Fabian

Owner/designer, R.Levine, original prints for clothing and accessories My style: Bold, artistic and sophisticated. My signature look is classic pieces accented with brightly colored, unique, statement accessories (like the ones I make).

COURTESY OF SIMPLY CHARMING BOUTIQUE

Favorite season: Being a scarf lady, I’d have to go with fall. Even though you can wear a scarf yearround, fall is the best time to add a pop of color or create some volume with my favorite accessory. Must-haves: Scarf – of course – and a cardigan/blazer. Changing up these items can create a whole new look while keeping it simple with classic pieces for the outfit. Scarf by R.Levine

Latest purchase: Red cropped jeans – a great way to dress up and still be comfortable. The girls-nightout look: Decorative blouse, dress shorts, complementing accessories and a pair of heels – preferably wedges to keep me going! Fashion lesson: My mom always encourages me to embrace who I am and enjoy expressing it through fashion. Fashion is less about picking the perfect pieces and more about enjoying the process of choosing an outfit and an attitude for that day. Shopping in CLE: I especially like Simply Charming Boutique in Cleveland Heights. The store is warm and welcoming and filled with one-of-a-kind designs and great gift items.

Manager, Leikin Mercedes-Benz, Leikin Volvo My style: I love to wear a suit with my signature pocket square. Favorite season: I like fall because it allows me to get creative, layer up, and I don’t have to worry about getting snow/salt on the bottom of my pant legs yet. Must-haves: A pair of high-top dress shoes. I also always enjoy a light scarf. Not in my closet: I am having a difficult time getting used to the men’s skinny jean. Latest purchase: I bought some Toms (shoes) to wear to a weekend-long music festival, and despite being heckled by friends, I love them. Fashion lesson: “Don’t look like you’re trying too hard. That’s advice from personal stylist Conor Patrick O’Malley, the most dapper guy I know. Sara Stashower

Left: Outfit by Babette, Art of Cloth. Below: Eileen Fisher outfit from Saks Fifth Avenue, Beachwood Place.

Visiting professor, John Carroll University; president, Suburban Temple-Kol Ami; jewelry designer My style: Mix and match. I never buy a complete outfit. Invariably, I’ll buy pieces and parts and pull things together. Or, at least, I try. I’m always in black, plus something. Black pants and a great jacket. Black capris and a bright linen top. Black dress and a beautiful sweater or throw. Add a smidge of jewelry – like one of my Sara-crafted, mixedup-pearl ropes – and I’m me. Favorite season: Fall for sure. Love the layers and the kick in the air. Come fall, I always think about the back-to-school clothes my mom and grandmother would buy for me. I’d wear that wool skirt on the first day of class even if it was 90 degrees outside. One must suffer to be beautiful, I guess! Must-haves: Comfortable but cool shoes – I love Pliner, Taryn Rose. Also, black dresses in all lengths, styles, and fabrics. Ditto for black pants. Latest purchase: Just stopped in at Eileen Fisher in Northhampton, Massachusetts. I love to find her stuff on sale and build staples that way. Got a great neutral sweater for fall and a stretch jersey skirt. There’s also a Cynthia Ashby taffeta trench coat I’m digging. 26

In my perfect world, there’d be no Spanx. Shopping in CLE: I troll the upstairs at Fine Points on Larchmere regularly for something new and different: beautiful pieces by Babette, Art of Cloth, a standout jacket by An Ren, and in the summer, Hand Jive. I live in it.

ennifer Adams and Kimberley Milstein, founders of The Republic of Artists in Warrensville Heights, went to Fashion’s Night Out in New York City two years ago and decided they wanted to bring an awareness for the event to Cleveland. “We fell in love with the energy of the night and its concept,” Adams said. “We got to meet Tory Burch and loved celebrating fashion in the city. We wanted to bring an awareness for Fashion’s Night Out to Cleveland.” The Republic of Artists and other lo-

cal boutiques, artists and stores will participate in Cleveland’s Fashion’s Night Out on Thursday, Sept. 6. Adams said The Republic of Artists will display work from businesses like Arhaus Jewelry, CLE Clothing Co., R. Levine, B. Lux boutique and 19 others in their showroom, 4925 Point Parkway, Warrensville Heights, from 5 to 11 p.m. Artists said they will be on hand to show their work. The night in Cleveland joins the international Fashion’s Night Out community with its beginnings in New York as the brainchild of American Vogue’s editor-inchief Anna Wintour. Cleveland and cities around the world will participate in the event that aims to highlight fashion and support retail with events that include designer appearances, celebrity guests, fashion shows and musical performances. Adams said The Republic of Artists’ event will feature boutiques, independent designers and artisans under one

roof, each in its own creative space with fashion as the common thread. Temporary vendors, like boutiques outside the Cleveland area, will have tables set up through September. JT Thomas, creative director at FashionTV Network LLC., said he plans to interview artists at the event for a documentary. The videographer, who worked for 10 years with the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum, has filmed Miami, Los Angeles and New York fashion weeks and will bring his signature red carpet style to The Republic of Artists. Adams said the event will be “a giant cocktail party,” equipped with three food trucks, drinks and DJ IMPURE on the turntables. Ryan Haber, founder and CEO of Ryan Haber Collection in Cleveland, said he will be displaying his 2012 spring/summer shoe collection “Alter Ego” at The Republic of Artists’ Fashion’s Night Out. The “wild” collection, which will be discounted 50%, includes mint, gold, white, black and metallic colors accented with stud work. “The Alter Ego collection is all about being open to being yourself,” said Haber. “It says, ‘Express yourselves, ladies.’” COURTESY OF Jennifer Adams

Marks said that although she loves “bedazzling,” she wanted to display her fall collection that allows customers to pick vintage charms she finds around Cleveland and design their own custom necklace, bracelet or earrings. She also said her multifunctional pieces, like a necklace that can be transformed into a bangle, will also be available at the event. “I love to inspire people to feel creative in purchasing and wearing my work,” Marks said. “It’s a never-ending evolution of creativity.” Rebecca Levine, a textile print artist

Levine will display her line of hand-painted textiles, including silk scarves and blouses with headbands, earrings and purses. She said she is most excited to show her wrapband, which can be worn as a bracelet, necklace or headband and has a hand-painted silk button. “The main concept of my pieces is for people to incorporate them into many looks,” Levine said. “It gives them more looks they can do with a basic piece that can change up any outfit.” Levine plans to display a mixture of silk and wool scarves for fall in addition to her wrapbands at the event.

Dispelling Dispelliplastic surgery myths Bahman Guyuron, M.D. There is a great deal of misleading information on the Internet that may deter potential plastic surgery candidates from undergoing surgery, even though it can be greatly beneficial to them. I will try to review these in an attempt to dispel some of the myths. One of the most common myths is that cosmetic surgery is painful. While there are rare cosmetic procedures that may cause some discomfort for a period of a day or two, most procedures, such as facelift and eyelid rejuvenation surgery, result in minimal to no pain. We consider any significant pain as a warning sign to look for a complication. Most patients experience some temporary numbness that will ultimately go away. Another common misconception is that rejuvenation effects are temporary. Surgical improvements are permanent. If someone undergoes surgery and appears somewhere between seven to 15 years younger, that person will always look seven to 15 years younger for the rest of his or her life. Another way to look at it is if the patient had an identical twin, the one who undergoes rejuvenation surgery would always look younger than the identical twin who did not have surgery. In essence, surgery turns the clock back, but doesn’t stop it. The clock ticks forward, but never catches up. Some also believe that rejuvenation surgery may accelerate aging. In reality, the reverse is true. Most patients develop a layer of scar tissue under the skin that is not stretchable and may better suspend the soft tissues, thus resisting the effects of gravity. A major fear about rejuvenation is looking different after surgery. The goal of this type of surgery is to erase some of the senescence effects and give the person a refreshed, more energized and natural appearance (unless a change in appearance is requested by the patient in addition to the planned procedure). If patients who undergo a rejuvenation procedure change their hairstyle or color, the apparent surgery-related changes could be attributed to those changes rather than the operation. The age at which rejuvenation can be started is another source of confusion. Those who notice signs of aging do not need to wait until they are “old enough.” The earlier rejuvenation is started, the younger the “base age” will be. To clarify: If someone who is 40 years old undergoes surgery and afterward looks more like a

30-year-old, 30 would be considered the “base age.” Ten years later, at age 50, that person is going to look like he or she is 40, and if that person wishes to look younger, he or she can have another surgery to return to the “base age” of 30. This is more desirable than having the same surgery at age 70 and looking 60 years old. Additionally, surgery performed at a younger age results in better outcomes, less chance of complications, and enjoyment of the outcome for a longer period of time.

Pearl and Pearl Fractional Rhinoplas LASER GREGORY M. FEDELE, M.D. Sun exposure over a period of time can cause accelerated damage to skin, leading to areas of increased pigmentation, fine lines or wrinkling. Aging can also adversely affect the appearance of skin by degeneration of collagen and elastic fibers, leading to fine lines and wrinkles. At the Art of Plastic Surgery, Dr. Fedele can rejuvenate your skin using state-of-the-art technology with our Pearl laser. Dr. Fedele offers this exciting new technology to renew your skin’s surface with quick, visible results and minimal downtime. Patients will see improvements in photo damage, tone, and texture as well as a noticeably smoother, brighter complexion to provide a healthy, pearl-like glow. The Pearl laser replaces the entire top, sun-damaged layer of skin with new, healthy skin. Simultaneously, it sends heat to deeper layers of the skin, stimulating new collagen growth, filling out and decreasing fine lines and wrinkles. New collagen growth continues for four to six weeks post-treatment. The combination of new skin and decreased wrinkles results in a healthier, more youthful appearance. Typically, only one to two treatments are necessary to renew your skin. Pearl Fractional therapy describes a treatment that affects only a fraction or small percentage of the skin. With Pearl Fractional, laser pulses selectively remove columns of damaged skin, leaving surrounding skin intact. The treatment shortens healing time and stimulates the body’s own natural process for creating new collagen, plumping the skin from below and reversing photoaging and other imperfections. Pearl Fractional laser treats deeper dermal imperfections, acne scarring, wrinkles, and facial lines in one treatment.

In-office Laser Treatment Highlights Pearl • Improves photo damage • Smoothes skin texture • Evens out pigmentation Pearl Fractional • Decreases fine lines and wrinkles • Promotes collagen growth Pearl Fusion • Maximizes results with single recovery

Pearl and Pearl Fractional laser treatments can be performed simultaneously to maximize your results with a single recovery time. Dr. Fedele performs these procedures in the office, using a topical anesthetic and mild sedation.

The Foglietti Natural ® Vector Facelift Technique

T

he Foglietti Natural Vector Facelift Technigue® is a method of tightening the face in a manner that gives the most natural and relaxed appearance after surgery. This facelift technique tightens the facial tissue under the skin in multiple directions or vectors. The tissue is then returned to its original more youthful position. The skin is then gently positioned over the naturally arranged tissue layer, resulting in a smooth and supple appearance, not the severe, tightened look often seen in facelift surgery.

The Foglietti Natural Vector Facelift is time efficient, taking only a few hours. The tissue is handled with extreme care which minimizes bruising considerably and facilitates prompt healing. The average recovery period is 10-14 days; this allows the sutures to be removed and any negligible swelling or bruising to diminish. Our patients can return to work in 14 days, safely and with confidence. For the most part, only minimal discomfort is ever reported after this procedure because it is done in such a precise and gentle manner. Surgery is performed in a state-of-the-art outpatient Surgery center with specialized nursing staff and post operative care. The Foglietti Natural Vector Facelift Technigue® is exclusive to The Cosmetic Surgery Institute.

Brazilian style Butt Lift Mark A. Foglietti, D.O. Derriere, fanny, posterior, rear, rump, buttocks, bum, the list goes on; for as many names that this body part has, there are an equal number of differences in their shapes. There are voluptuous curves like those of Sofia Vergera or Rihanna, the boyish hips and tight round tushes that Jada Pinkett Smith and Jessica Biel flaunt, or the slim and barely there backsides of Gisele Bundchen and Cameron Diaz. All these shapes and everything in between are a large part of the focus in our society’s desire to look good and impress. Luckily, in many instances, you don’t have to settle for what Mother Nature gave you. One such example is the butt lift procedure. The older, traditional butt lift method of surgery requires an incision, tucking and suturing of skin and fatty tissue into a higher position. There is a definite improvement in shape to the bottom afterward, but the scarring can be unsightly in many types of clothing. A newer approach, the Brazilian style lift, uses a person’s own body fat to give more fullness and shape to a flat or slightly sagging posterior. This procedure is performed on an outpatient basis with light anesthesia. First, fat is suctioned (liposuction) from an area such as the stomach, hip folds, or thighs. Then, the collected fat is precisely injected into specific regions of the buttock. The body will absorb some of the fat that is injected; therefore, the region is traditionally over-filled to compensate for the absorption. If a patient is looking for a significant enhancement, more than one procedure may be required. The fat that is injected and not absorbed by the body will result in a permanent improvement. The amount of fat that is absorbed will vary from patient to patient.

The Brazilian style lift leaves little to no scarring, minimal to no bruising and offers a significantly shorter recovery time than the more invasive traditional lift. For a specific and personalized discussion of this procedure with Dr. Foglietti, an appointment for consultation can be made. Mark Foglietti, D.O., FACOS, is at the Cosmetic Surgery Institute in Beachwood.

Rhinoplasty: Rhinoplasty: Dramatic Yet Natural Traditional Rhinoplasty

Non-surgical Rhinoplasty

before

after

sTEven a. goldman, M.D. Rhinoplasty is the most complex of the common plastic surgery procedures. Contemporary techniques achieve a delicate balance between obtaining dramatic results and maintaining a natural appearance. Nasal breathing problems are also addressed, so that patients can look and breathe better. New nonsurgical techniques utilize injectable fillers to enhance the nasal appearance without surgery in select patients. Rhinoplasty may be performed for cosmetic or medical reasons. Medical procedures involve correcting the nasal bones and cartilage when they obstruct breathing. Such corrections may involve straightening deviation of the nasal bones, strengthening areas of weak cartilage, or opening blockages. Rhinoplasty may be combined with septoplasty, a procedure that alleviates obstruction inside the nose caused by irregularities in the nasal septum (the thin wall of bone and cartilage that divides the right and left sides of the nasal cavity). Insurance may cover rhinoplasty and septoplasty performed to improve breathing. Cosmetic rhinoplasty must be individualized to suit each patient’s personal esthetic goals and physical characteristics. The goal is generally to achieve a dramatic but natural change. The procedure can be more or less aggressive depending on the patient’s goals while maintaining familial and ethnic traits to maintain balance with the whole face. Common goals include reducing a hump on the bridge of the nose, decreasing the overall size of the nose, straightening deviation, elevating the tip of the nose, and making the nostrils smaller.

after

before

Two basic rhinoplasty techniques exist: open and closed (also known as endonasal). Some surgeons use only one technique, but in general open rhinoplasty is used for more aggressive procedures and procedures requiring refinement of the nasal tip. Closed rhinoplasty may be more commonly used for surgery being performed just to improve breathing or when reducing a hump of the nasal bridge without other esthetic changes. The most significant recent development in the field of rhinoplasty is the non-surgical rhinoplasty, in which injectable fillers, like Radiesse™ and Restylane™, are used to enhance the nasal appearance. Asymmetries and irregularities may be smoothed out. A small hump in the bridge may be minimized, and the nasal tip can be elevated. Non-surgical rhinoplasty is performed in the office, with no anesthesia, like most cosmetic injections. The injectable fillers are not permanent, so the achieved changes are not either, but they generally last for several months. Prospective rhinoplasty patients need to be sure they find a surgeon who is a board certified plastic surgeon with a special interest in rhinoplasty; the surgeon should have extensive experience with the procedure. Giving Your

Stylish Abode Some Fall Flavor

By Matt DeFaveri

S

ome home decor can wear out its welcome if it’s arranged without a plan or vision, which is why picking the proper fall design elements is critical to achieving maximum feng shui. Two Ohio designers dished out their best advice for giving your home that fall feeling and transforming your decor into a fashion statement. Elements of style Design trends have lost some steam in recent years, said interior design consultant Lewis Wallack, president of Lewis Wallack and Associates, but homeowners still have enough options for a redesign. “Part of that is the economic climate we’re in,” Wallack said. “People really want interiors that are more timeless than they wanted in the past because they’re not redoing them as often as they have been.”

This table, designed by A Piece of Cleveland, was made from repurposed wood from a house in Cleveland Heights. 56

Just don’t ask Wallack what colors are “in” this fall; it’s irrelevant, he said. “People should do what they like, what they want,” said Wallack, who has offices in Cleveland, Chicago and Sydney. “If you look at inte rior design as fashion, then that’s fine and there’s no problem with it, but be prepared to know that, as is true in fashion, things will go out of style quickly.” Still, there are several trending design elements that lend themselves to timelessness, Wallack said. “People can use lots of color these days,” he said. “Bold fabrics, bold prints, bold carpets. It certainly does not mean 20 years from now that they won’t be as beautiful or relevant as they are today.” Over the last year, Wallack also noticed heavier use of wall coverings and background papers and a shift toward modern furniture. For Wallack, it’s all about mixing and matching. “I love the eclectic look of mixing different styles and different periods,” he said. “I think that gives you the most interesting look.”

Successful interior design requires adaption, Wallack said. “My work has always ranged from traditional to contemporary,” he said. “It’s never been locked in one period.”

Reduce, reuse, recycle Swapping out rugs can be an effective fall design choice. Rugs come in different sizes, shapes, and materials, but most people wouldn’t guess that “recycled plastic bottles” fall under “materials.” Laurie Lindbloom, owner of LZL Interiors, saw such a rug up close and personal. “I’m not surprised to see where the trend’s going, but the part that surprised me was that I liked the rug and saw it was made out of recycled plastic bottles and packing materials,” she said. “There are also platters made out of tree roots, lamps made out of beach glass and actual rocks. It’s an ecofriendly field that will establish itself more and more in the home market.” Reclaimed wood is a hot trend, especially in Cleveland, Lindbloom said. Companies like A Piece of Cleveland disassemble homes scheduled for demolition, remove the wood

and make furniture out of it. If it sounds niche, it’s not; the “green design” trend is already spreading. “You go into places like Restoration Hardware and Crate & Barrel – it’s already out there,” Lindbloom said. “In Cleveland, we’ve been more traditional in our taste, but (our interior design) is getting to be more transitional and more contemporary.”

Bang for your buck An easy way to add some fall flair to your home is using textures, Lindbloom said. “In other words, adding fabric that’s got a lot more texture to it,” she said. “Or adding some sort of natural-based window treatment like woven wood, woven grasses, that sort of thing.” Yellows are a wise choice since autumn is rife with earth tones and, combined with earthy throw pillows, can warm up an abode. “It’s just a matter of cozying up the place when the temperatures get lower,” Lindbloom said. “I’d suggest having a throw on the sofa.” The easiest and least expensive fall fixerContinued on page 58

upper is paint, Wallack said. “You can do a tremendous amount to change the look of a room with paint,” he said. “You can add an accent wall or totally use wall coverings.” Wallack also suggested art, though it doesn’t have to be expensive to add style to a room. “Art has become a tremendous factor in how people decorate these days,” he said. “One should never design a room around a piece of art. If you have a painting that has oranges and greens, you don’t get furniture to match.” Instead, Wallack said to use opposing colors to complement artwork. “Don’t overwhelm your artwork,” he said. “Let your furniture be a backdrop for the art. Don’t let it compete.”

The hallway mirror had a dated brass finish before it was refinished with an offblack painted aged finish to complement the stair banister spindles and wrought iron light fixtures.

CHEF’S CORNER

Marlin Kaplan

Rooting for root

veggies

By Arlene Fine

M

arlin Kaplan really digs root vegetables. The chef, restaurateur, marketing maven and newly minted culinary maestro at Executive Caterers at Landerhaven in Mayfield Heights uses lots of root veggies in his fall cuisine. “I enjoy making dishes that incorporate the richness of nature’s bounty during the autumn

harvest,” he says. “Root vegetables like turnips, parsnips, carrots, potatoes and rutabagas are chock-full of vitamins and flavor and add a richness to many satisfying dishes like lasagna.” Kaplan’s recipe for root vegetable lasagna “is great for a family or informal gathering and goes nicely with an herb-roasted chicken or a tender brisket,” he says.

Root vegetable lasagna

3 turnips 3 parsnips 3 carrots 3 large Idaho potatoes 3 rutabagas 1 celery root Salt and pepper to taste butter or vegetable spray 1 lb cooked lasagna sheets 2 C ricotta custard (recipe at right) 3 C herbed bechamel (recipe below right) 1 C Parmesan cheese

Peel and slice root vegetables; season to taste. Coat the bottom and sides of a heavy baking dish with butter or vegetable spray. Layer the vegetables in the pan. Every second layer, add a layer of lasagna sheets and a few spoonfuls of the ricotta custard. Continue until you reach the top of the pan. Finish with a layer of lasagna sheets and then pour the herbed bechamel over the lasagna and sprinkle on Parmesan cheese. Cover and place in a preheated 350º oven for about 45 minutes. Remove the cover and continue cooking until top begins to brown. Remove from oven and let stand for about 20 minutes until the bechamel sets. Serve with a sprinkle of Parmesan cheese. Serves 8-10.

Ricotta custard

1 lb (about 2 C) ricotta cheese 2 eggs, beaten 1 oz grated Parmesan cheese Dash of freshly grated nutmeg Salt and pepper to taste

Place all ingredients in a metal mixing bowl. Stir until smooth and all the ingredients are thoroughly incorporated.

Herbed bechamel

2 T unsalted butter 3 T white flour 2-1/2 C milk, scalded Several fresh herb sprigs bundled together: flat leaf parsley, rosemary, thyme and marjoram Salt and pepper

Make a roux (French sauce base) by heating butter, adding flour and cooking for 2 or 3 minutes. Add scalded milk, a little at a time, and whisk continuously. Add the herbs and seasoning and cook over low heat for about 10 minutes. Remove the herb bundle before using.
