RIDE ON
When Robert “Kip” Danzinger wants to spend time with his buddies, you won’t find him in a bar or playing poker. Instead, look along Chagrin River Road for a pack of cyclists. Every Tuesday and Thursday morning, Danzinger, 41, bikes 32 miles with 10-15 of his friends. On Saturdays, the group ups the ante, biking anywhere from 50-75 miles. Danzinger’s weekly cycling outings help him train for triathlons. He competes in three to four Ironman triathlons each summer, where he runs, bikes and swims. His intense workouts allow this father of three to satisfy his sweet tooth and eat whatever he wants. He admits he loves to indulge in desserts. With a demanding career as an attorney and young children at home, Danzinger admits sometimes it is hard to fit in 32-mile bike rides. “Family comes first,” he emphasizes. “I get the workouts in where it doesn’t interfere with that.” And his wife is as fit as he. Having his children see him active is a huge motivator, he says. Cycling and triathlons have sometimes been a family affair: Last summer, the children finished their first kids’ triathlon. 16

AHH YOGA mary basch, yoga
Mary Basch, 47, has her kids to thank for her love of yoga. After her last child was born 13 years ago, she had trouble getting her abdominal muscles back in shape. An aerobics teacher remarked that yoga had helped her get her post-pregnancy ab muscles back. Basch was hooked instantly. Today, yoga is her only workout regimen. She not only practices yoga, she teaches it, too. Basch teaches four classes a week at Cleveland Yoga, takes four classes a week, and practices yoga at home twice a week. This routine, gives her all the muscle building and cardio she needs. The mother of two is a vegetarian and maintains a “clean” diet. “I try to stay away from all processed foods and eat a lot of vegetables, fruits, nuts, seeds, beans and whole grains,” she says. Life is better when practicing yoga daily, Basch admits. “I am more relaxed and less stressed. There are no challenges for me to do it, and I don’t need motivation anymore. I like and want to do it. It really is the best physical workout I’ve ever done.” CLEVELAND JEWISH NEWS

KNOCK OUT david kampinski, boxing
David Kampinski’s exercise routine packs plenty of punch. When the 32-year-old works out, he isn’t running on a treadmill or lifting weights. Instead, you’ll find him in the boxing ring or practicing jabs and right hooks on the hanging bag. Kampinski has always been interested in boxing and is a boxing promoter in Cleveland. So it was natural to incorporate it into his workout. Along with practicing yoga, Kampinski works out his entire body, using boxing techniques such as shadowboxing, (looking in the mirror and pretending you are boxing someone). A self-proclaimed “meat and potatoes guy,” Kampinski tries to eat four or five small meals a day, focusing on lots of lean protein like chicken. He admits that from time to time he slacks off on his workouts but “doesn’t let it go too long. I love the workout and how I feel when I’m done.” He doesn’t have to look too far for motivation. Kampinski says the variety of the boxing workout is enough to keep him satisfied, and he can switch up his routine in “a million different ways.” 18

RUN FOR IT joanna wyner, runner
Joanna Wyner, 35, has run on and off for most of her life. But when she used the activity to lose weight after giving birth to twin girls four and a half years ago, she was hooked for good. Wyner runs five days a week, has already completed two marathons, and is currently training for her third. Each day, after she drops her daughters off at school, she hits the local trails to complete the 25-30 miles she runs a week. Training for a marathon or other competition bumps her mileage to nearly 40plus miles a week. About a year ago, Wyner’s vegetarian diet slowly evolved into a vegan diet. Now, she eats mostly fruits, vegetables and wholegrain carbohydrates like whole-wheat pasta. Her favorite go-to snack is hummus and veggies. Wyner admits she isn’t lacking motivation when it comes to running. Sometimes she has to remind herself not to run too much and hold back to avoid injuries. She has added cross-training to her routine, which, she notes, is an important part of her day. “I’ve noticed that if I don’t run, I get really moody and grumpy,” she says. “I always feel good after I run.” 20

PUMP UP liz marx, weight lifter
All Liz Marx needed was a little guidance. Eleven years ago, the mother of two was working out at the JCC, lifting a few weights. When she began to work with a trainer who corrected her form, it further sparked her interest in weight lifting. Three months later, when she entered her first body-building competition, she placed third. Although that was Marx’s first and last competition, she kept lifting weights three to four days a week, along with a cardio workout six to seven days a week. At each session Marx focuses on a specific area of her body, such as chest and triceps, shoulders, and legs. Protein is a staple in her diet, because it helps build muscle, Marx says. A typical dinner is salmon, salad and veggies. Weight lifting can be challenging as Marx gets older and deals with genetic joint problems and arthritis, but the 54-yearold has no intention of putting away her dumbbells for good. “I fully expect to keep doing this for 40-50 years,” she says. “I won’t do it with the same intensity, but that’s my hope.”

problems you haven’t seen since you were 16. David Hagen, manager of Mario’s International Salon & Spa, says many of the spa’s clients find a facial, including a mask, steam treatment and extractions, the perfect antidote to pregnancy breakouts. Hagen recommends women hold off on any salon or spa services during the first trimester. After that, they can treat their aching feet to a pedicure, which includes an herbal foot-bath, a massage and exfoliation. (Mario’s also offers prenatal massage.) A woman who is juggling work, family and/or community responsibilities might disagree, but even the most harried momto-be can find a few minutes to pamper or care for herself with products delivered right to her door. PLASTIC SURGERY: Special Advertising Section
More options than ever for facial rejuvenation by dr. steven goldman
THE latest developments in plastic surgery continue to broaden our options for making the face look younger and more beautiful. the fraxel re:pair™ laser. The new, third generation Fraxel™ laser is the first laser to combine “fractionation” technology with a carbon dioxide (CO2) laser light source. This is a tremendous advancement. Previous CO2 lasers constituted the most effective resurfacing modality to reduce facial wrinkles and sun damage, but treatment required general anesthesia and incurred a prolonged period for healing. Fractionation speeds healing and reduces discomfort, so that the procedure has less down-time and can be performed in the office setting. Results are comparable to older CO2 lasers. More patients are now candidates for laser resurfacing than ever before. Dr. Steven Goldman of Beachwood Plastic Surgery and Medical Spa (216-514-8899) is one of the first physicians in Ohio to offer treatment with the Re:pair™ laser. botox™ and fillers. No other cosmetic procedures are performed as much as Botox™ and filler injections. These treatments are safe and effective; results are noticeable and reproducible. Botox™ paralyzes muscle to reduce various types of frown lines and creases formed by muscle over-activity. Fillers, like Restylane™, Juvderm™, Perlane™, Radiesse™, and
Sculptra™ can be injected directly into wrinkles, adding volume to camouflage creases. Fillers do not interfere with facial expression or muscle movement in any way. Injections are not as powerful as the facelift, but produce natural, noticeable changes, and have minimal down-time. For appropriate patients (and by experienced physicians), fillers can also be used for such techniques as the non-surgical rhinoplasty. thermage™. This is a skin tightening procedure that uses radiowaves to stimulate collagen production in and under the skin. It produces a subtle but noticeable tightening and firming of the skin. Thermage™ is performed in the office and requires no anesthetic. It is one of the few procedures that has truly no down-time, no redness, minimal swelling. The benefit of tightening and absence of down-time have made Thermage™ increasingly popular. facelift. Contemporary approaches strive to produce rejuvenation that is dramatic and beautiful but does not look surgical. The facelift remains the gold standard of all treatment options to make the face look younger. This is not a one-hour procedure; this is a complex artistic procedure that not only redrapes facial skin but lifts and reshapes underlying tissues. To obtain the ideal result, related procedures like eyelid, brow, and neck lifts may also be needed. For appropriately selected patients, the results of full-face rejuvenation are incomparable to lesser procedures.
One-hour facelifts and other minilifts are currently being aggressively advertised to the public, even with info-mercials. These are generally very limited procedures. Patients should be cautious: ask the doctor specifically what will be done surgically; ask to see photographs of his or her results; also ask if the doctor is a Board Certified Plastic Surgeon and a member of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons. Minimal procedures may be appropriate but other options like laser resurfacing or fillers may be more effective and less expensive. The breadth of options for facial enhancement is greater than ever. The combination of new modalities with well-established techniques is yielding better results than ever. Steven A. The Natural (Vector) Facelift
by dr. mark foglietti

| CLEVELAND JEWISH NEWS | JS TYLE | JULY 2008
THE Natural (Vector) Facelift is a method of tightening the face in a manner that gives the most natural and relaxed appearance post surgically. This facelift technique tightens the facial tissue covering underlying muscle in multiple directions or vectors, which counteracts the sagging laxity that occurs as we age. The tissue is then returned to its younger, original position. After this system of tightening, the skin is then gently positioned over the naturally arranged muscle layers, resulting in a smooth and supple appearance as opposed to the severe, tightened look often seen in facelift surgery. The Natural (Vector) Facelift is time efficient, taking only a few hours. The tissue is handled with extreme care, which minimizes bruising considerably and facilitates prompt healing. Most patients can shower and wash their hair within 48 hours of their surgery. The average recovery period is 1014 days; this allows the sutures to be removed and any negligible swelling or bruising to diminish. We tell our
patients that they can return to work in 14 days, safely and with confidence. Most patients experience no pain after this procedure because it is done in such a precise, gentle and efficient manner. For the most part, only minimal discomfort is ever reported. Surgery is performed in a stateof-the-art out patient surgery center with specialized nursing staff and post operative care. If you are considering facial cosmetic surgery and have some of the concerns noted, be sure to ask us about the Natural (Vector) Facelift.

Smartlipo: change the way you think of yourself.
by dr. jason leedy

| CLEVELAND JEWISH NEWS | JS TYLE | JULY 2008
HAVE you ever looked in the mirror and used words like “jelly belly, spare tire, muffin top, saddle bags, or turkey neck” to describe what you see? Well you are not alone. Even those of us who maintain a healthy lifestyle often cannot undue the traits passed on by our parents. We’ve struggled to camoflauge those areas, but we don’t have to anymore, thanks to a new body contouring procedure: Smartlipo. Traditional body contouring procedures often require a trip to the operating room and a prolonged recovery. Smartlipo is different. In this revolutionary procedure a laser is used to dissolve fat and tighten tissue. The laser energy is delivered using a small, 1.5 millimeter fiber placed underneath the skin. The laser is so small that the area can be numbed with an anesthetic similar to that used in a dentist’s office. Once the laser has treated the area, a 2mm liposuction cannula is used to remove the liquefied fat. A compression garment is worn afterwards and there is some swelling and a little bruising, but usually less than seen with other techniques. The end result is a smoother, flatter, tighter area, all done without the need for general anesthesia. This isn’t a lunchtime procedure though. It is more involved than that. But, since the procedure is performed in the office under local anesthesia you can be back to nor-
mal activity in less than 24 hours. The results are permanent; once the fat is destroyed it does not come back. Smartlipo has its indications but it does not replace the need for traditional procedures. It is best suited for those with small isolated fatty areas who are near a normal weight. If you are interested in learning more about this procedure call Dr. Leedy at the Cleveland Plastic Surgery Institute today. He is board-certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery, a member of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, chief of Plastic Surgery at Marymount Hospital, and the Smartlipo clinical trainer for Northeast Ohio. You are in good hands with Dr. Leedy. He will give you an honest evaluation. If you are not a good candidate, as a plastic surgeon Dr. Leedy can offer a plan to help you achieve your goals. But thanks to Smartlipo, now more than ever, it is easier to change the way you think about yourself.

Q QUESTION: People frequently ask me if I’m tired or upset when I feel fine. I feel my eyes are making me look this way. What can be done for this? ANSWER: Changes in the appearance of the eyes are among the first signs of aging for which people consider having plastic surgery. Sagging of the brow, and the development of frown lines and excess skin and/or fat in the upper and lower eyelids are typical early signs of aging. There are a number of procedures available to treat these issues, from injectables to surgery. Botox and
A
injectable fillers such as Restylane and Juvederm can effectively provide temporary improvement of mild to moderate changes. Surgery provides longer lasting and more dramatic improvements. There are a number of surgical procedures available to reverse these signs of aging from eyelid tucks (blepharoplasty) to brow lifts, and weakening of the muscles that cause the forehead and frown lines. The procedures can performed alone or combined with face lift or other procedures. What works best in each individual patients case varies and the treatment plan is chosen after careful evaluation of the facial features, structure, and personal preferences. Usually the goal is to

Q QUESTION: What is a Mommy makeover? ANSWER: Many of today’s moms desire their prepregnancy bodies. Mommy makeovers reverse the unwanted effects of childbearing. The joys of parenting are very rewarding; however, the physical changes affecting a woman’s body can adversely impact self-image. Procedures performed by Plastic Surgeons certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery can help counteract the physical effects of childbearing. QUESTION: Can exercising accomplish a pre-pregnancy body shape?
A
ANSWER: Despite one’s best efforts, a woman’s breasts, belly and waistline may not completely recover after childbirth. Abdominal muscles and skin stretch; the breasts may sag or lose volume; the waistline may lose its curves as the muscles underneath loosen. A breast lift and/or breast augmentation can improve the position, volume and size of the breasts. Breast reductions lift and reduce the size of large pendulous breasts that may occur after pregnancy weight gain. Liposuction and tummy tucks are often combined to eliminate excess fat and skin left over from pregnancy helping one regain an “hourglass” figure. QUESTION: How much time does it take to recover? ANSWER: Plastic surgery procedures are
most often performed on an outpatient basis, in and out the same day. Many surgeries can be combined and performed at the same time, reducing the need for multiple recovery periods. Recovery time is dependant on the procedure. Call 440808-8030 for a consultation.

QUESTION: What sets you apart from other surgeons performing cosmetic breast surgery? ANSWER: In addition to the two years of residency in Plastic Surgery and five years in General Surgery, my extensive training includes an additional year and a half of fellowships exclusively in breast surgery. Over the course of my career, I have performed numerous breast procedures and have collaborated in the creation of a textbook detailing reconstruction of the breast with natural tissue after mastectomy.
QUESTION: Describe the impact of the additional training on your approach to breasts surgery. ANSWER: The fellowships provided personal surgical experience in both cosmetic and reconstructive procedures. The surgical results that I achieve are related to the research that I have performed, experience that I have gained and the superb mentoring that I have received. A visit to www.DrMichelow.com provides an opportunity to view some of my surgical results. QUESTION: What can patients interested in breast augmentation surgery expect during their consultation? Q QUESTION: What are the advantages of minimally invasive facial and skin rejuvenation procedures? ANSWER: Minimally Invasive techniques are designed to provide significant improvement with limited recovery times and are comfortably performed without general anesthesia in an office based or ambulatory surgical facility. In addition to Botox, dermal fillers, Sculptra and laser skin tightening treatments, minimally invasive techniques include mini- facial lifts and fractionated skin rejuvenation treatments. smart laser to separate facial skin from deeper areas that are to be lifted. In a LSL special patented high tech sutures are used to lift the jowl area and better define the neck. QUESTION: How do Minimally Invasive Procedures compare with traditional results of Facial Plastic Surgical Procedures? ANSWER: Minimally invasive surgical procedures may equal results from traditional procedures in selected patients. These are usually patients who consult with us at an earlier age. A smaller percentage of patients will need adjunctive procedures particularly neck tightening procedures to achieve a result that they and the surgeon will be pleased with. QUESTION: What is your experience with Minimally Invasive Facial Rejuvenation procedures? ANSWER: In the last year we performed
over 400 mini lift procedures on patients from 10 states. Many of these had eye lid or neck tightening procedures concurrently performed. Due to our extensive experience with these techniques, our patient satisfaction rates are very high. Because of the reduced need for general anesthesia and long operating times these procedures are much more affordable than traditional procedures.

Refreshing your appearance after 50 WE all want to grow old gracefully. While some people embrace the natural aging process, others just want the wrinkles, sagging skin, crow’s feet, and jowls to just go away! Plastic surgery is a personal choice, and according to The American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS), men and women ages 35 to 50 made up 45% of the 11.9 million surgical and non-surgical cosmetic procedures performed in 2004; yet, ages 51 to 64 is the second-highest group to undergo cosmetic surgery. “Patients over 50 want to look younger and more attractive for a num-
ber of reasons,” says Dr. Leonard Miller, a board certified plastic surgeon affiliated with Harvard Medical School in Boston. His rundown of factors that drive older patients toward anti-aging treatments and procedures are: • General self-esteem • Competition in the workplace • To feel more attractive and connected/accepted in their social circles • To get a new start/jump on life and attract new partners • To look as young as they feel Wrinkles are nothing to be afraid of – they will happen to the best of us. Q The Re:pair™ is Fraxel’s third generation laser and is the most powerful tool now available for treatment of facial wrinkles in the office setting. Fraxel gained notoriety and popularity by pioneering “fractionation,” a technology in which laser light is divided into a pattern of ultra-fine dots. This leaves microscopic islands of skin intact between the lasered areas to speed healing and reduce discomfort. anti-aging options at your disposal, individuals over 50 shouldn’t have to surrender to crow’s feet, a flabby midsection, or forehead creases if they don’t want to. According to Dr. Miller, unless patients have high blood pressure and/or take contraindicated medications, an older patient and a younger patient are susceptible to the same risks and uncertainties with plastic surgery. For an individual over 50 seeking effective, anti-aging treatment or procedures to look younger, cosmetic surgery is still a sought-after solution. continues on 58

face. The Re:pair™ combines two proven technologies: fractionation and a carbon dioxide (CO2) laser light source. For years, CO2 lasers have been regarded as the most effective lasers for facial rejuvenation, but they have significant down time for healing and require general anesthesia. Recovery is faster with the Re:pair™ than older CO2 lasers because of fractionation. In addition, the density of the dots can be varied, as can the power of the laser, so the skin can be treated more or less aggressively. Laser treatments should be performed by qualified, board certified physicians experienced with medical lasers. Dr. Steven Goldman of Beach-
wood Plastic Surgery and Medical Spa is one of the first physicians in Ohio to offer treatment with the Fraxel Re:pair™ laser. To find out more about the Re:pair™ laser or to consult with Dr. Goldman, call (216) 514-8899 or visit www.drgoldman.com.

After a full day of coiffing clients, he cherishes time spent time with Lisa, son Julian, 12, daughter Olivia, 9, black Labrador mix Chase, and hamster Jojo. But once the rest of the family beds down for the night, Shelby naps briefly, then gets out the drill and resumes renovating the 3,400-square-foot Orange Village home they moved into four years ago. “Our kids are used to sleeping through the noise of power tools,” says Lisa, who does computer work for her family’s accounting firm. “And Shelby doesn’t require much sleep.” Every inch of the 30-year-old house has been renovated by Shelby and accessorized by Lisa – or soon will be. Improvements start with the exterior. Shelby expanded a two-car garage with a side entrance to accommodate three cars and reoriented it to face the street. (This allowed him to tinker with the home’s interior layout as well.) He painted the formerly brown house cream with taupe

trim, added a stacked-stone entryway, and installed a circular driveway. Lisa replanted the now-lush lawn. One step inside the foyer reveals the couple’s exuberant personalities. A colorful mosaic table that took Shelby 40 hours to create provides a focal point. The musically themed piece features a saxophone, reggae musician, guitar-playing cowboy, musical notes and piano. “We used to have arts-and-crafts nights before we had kids,” Lisa jokes. Three framed photographs of Shelby proposing to Lisa atop Mt. Masada in Israel hang on one wall. A wrought-iron light fixture with five frosted-glass flowers illuminates an impressive wrought-iron railing Shelby fashioned in just four nights. At first Shelby thought of having someone else make the railing and received an estimate of $2,000. “But I said, ‘I could do this myself.’” So he bent wrought iron on a Jeep bumper to match a self-made template. A friend taught him to weld, and his brother Jeff, who helped with the home’s cabinetry, made

the wood handrail. That’s typical of Shelby’s modus operandi. “I do 80% of the work when I don’t know what I’m doing. Then I tap into resources and people I know. I barter. Whatever.” He estimates the willingness to dirty his fingernails has saved him $150,000 in labor. A step down from the foyer and through French doors is the newly remodeled living room, a comfortable spot for relaxing in front of a fire. Pre-construction, the living room and great room were one room, defined only by a shared wraparound fireplace. But Lisa wanted a separate room she and Shelby could enjoy, so Shelby erected a permanent wall, dividing the spaces and confining the fireplace to the living room. “This was white brick and gross,” Lisa says, pointing to the fireplace’s new travertine stone surround, solid walnut mantle, and floating display shelves. “I planed (the shelves) at different thicknesses to give them depth and texture,” Shelby explains. To unify the room, he covered the ceiling beams with walnut. Lisa’s handiwork is displayed on her grandmother’s round coffee table, originally decorated in a green and gold floral pattern. After staining the table, Lisa meticulously painted the top with a replica of Picasso’s “The Dream,” a vibrant representation of a sleeping woman wearing a beaded necklace. Slate floors, a feature wall and glass-topped floating vanity make an elegant statement in this powder room. 66

showcases a vintage barber chair that he restored. It meshes seamlessly with the room’s retro-looking chenille sofa, chair and brown- and black-striped carpet. Across the foyer, the dining room’s outside wall was reconfigured following the garage remodel. Three large windows that inhibited privacy were replaced by one window that provides ample natural light while still retaining intimacy. A large mirror with dark wood frame that Shelby designed complements a sideboard he fashioned from cabinets that were “mistakes” from a former residence. Shelby stained the piece and topped it with black Corian®. A leaf-motif globe light fixture with wrought iron and faux alabaster illuminates the long, light wood dining table. The family spends the bulk of their time in the inviting kitchen and adjacent great room. “When we moved in, I said, ‘We don’t have to do a thing,’” Lisa recalls. But Shelby recognized potential where Lisa saw an area unencumbered by power tools, ladders and sawdust. “You have to suffer a little if I do it myself,” Shelby acknowledges. “Lisa really has patience and puts up with a lot of mess!” The kitchen rennovation involved ripping out soffits, an inefficient island with built-in cooktop, and a peninsula that cut the work area in half. The improved design boasts a longer, granitetopped island with storage, TV shelf overlooking the island, relo-

FROM siding to cabinetry, flooring to furnishings, people want to know the things they buy for their homes are good for the planet and themselves. An ever-growing number of options offers products made from sustainable sources, that contain fewer toxic chemicals, and conserve energy. Local builders are constructing homes packed with environmentally friendly products and technology. In September, Alan Brown of Premier Custom Builders will unveil a green home in Bainbridge, built as part of the Cleveland Homearama, a group of seven $1 million-plus homes. The home, with 6,300 square feet of living space, is built from solid concrete from floor to roof.

TOP-DOWN weather is upon us. Drivers who enjoy the hot summer wind blowing through their hair will likely be thrilled by the nimble, sexy 2008 BMW Z4 convertible. The two-seat Z4 ($36,700) offers engaging handling and steering, an exhilarating inline six-cylinder engine, and distinctive styling. The snazzy little roadster may not have the horsepower of some of its less expensive CLEVELAND JEWISH NEWS

competitors, but what it lacks in power it makes up for in precision: The car responds to the slightest turn of the wheel, allowing the driver to feel truly in charge. The Z4’s 3.0-liter, six-cylinder, 215-horsepower engine comes standard, as does the six-speed manual transmission. (A six-speed automatic is optional.) The Z4’s sharp reflexes shine during freeway driving. Flicking through the gears gives the vehicle a quick, satisfying punch. The Z4 is available as a roadster with a convertible top or a fixed-roof coupe. Features include 17-inch wheels, stability control, antilock brakes, power mirrors and windows, vinyl upholstery and manually operated seats. The car is as fun to drive with the top up as it is with the top down. Leg room is about average for the class. However, taller drivers might not like folding themselves into what is unmistakably a small vehicle. Once inside, you are surrounded by BMW’s trademark simplicity and style. Too many sports cars have numerous buttons and levers. The learning curve on the Z4’s interior is much shorter. The simple dash layout places all controls at your fingertips. The top folds into the back deck with a touch of a button. The leather-covered, aluminum spoke steering wheel features buttons for the sound system and cruise control. An optional onboard computer provides information through a digital readout; you can access temperature, fuel mileage, average speed since the last setting, or miles to empty. Wind-buffeting with the top down is almost nonexistent, even at high speeds. With the top up, the Z4 is quiet for a sports car, although road noise is still noticeable. That is a minor quibble, as overall the BMW Z4 is a cool summer ride.

& bike hike to see the world
up close and personal by christine gordillo
SOME of the best vacations involve the healthy elements of biking and walking. It is, say those who do it, a wonderful and different way to see the world. Between the two of them, Sue and Peter Danford of Shaker Heights have seen nearly 10 countries, either by bike or on foot. “It’s a great way to know a small area very thoroughly and to see the people and territory up close,” Peter says. On trips to India and Vietnam, the Danfords particularly enjoyed biking through small villages and interacting with the residents, who all came out of their homes to greet the pack of cyclists. “You could really feel the flavor of the local life,” adds Sue, who found that the trip operators do a great job of incorporating cultural aspects into the itinerary. On the Danfords’ Moroccan trip, they slept in tents in the Sahara Desert after riding in on camels and enjoying a traditional feast and dancing under the stars.

reflect the region, climate and soil they come from – call it her terroirist manifesto. Troubled by the globalizing trends threatening local wines, the author describes a visit to the source of many of the new techniques, the prestigious winemaking school at University of California – Davis. Here, technologies like the use of designer yeasts and reverse osmosis to alter fermentation to make grapes fruitier and adding enzymes to modify color are taught. She is dismayed to find concepts like biodynamics, which take into account nature’s rhythms, are not taught because they are considered too unscientific. Her ideal wine would be one made with no additives, the product of grapes, stems, natural airborne yeasts and time. In contrast, Feiring takes her reader to Europe to discover the Syrahs of France’s Rhône Valley, Spanish Riojas and her first love, Italian Barolos. She roams the Loire Valley, France’s third largest wine region, home to Sauvignon and Chenin Blanc. Always, she

seeks out small winemakers who are using traditional techniques, relying on nature and their instincts to produce wines with character. Feiring takes her subject seriously, but she regards herself with self-deprecating humor. As approachable as she is knowledgeable, Feiring writes a popular blog at www.alicefeiring.com called Veritas in Vino, on which she recommends naturally produced wines. She says she is a wine writer not a wine critic, which may be a distinction without a difference. But whatever she calls herself, her readers will want to wish her a hearty “l’chiam!” L
