The right makeup techniques and quality cosmetics can enhance a woman’s natural beauty and give her a special glow.

by arlene fine CLEOPATRA had to rely on lead sulphite and distilled spices, herbs and roots to create the cosmetics that turned her alluring cat-shaped eyes into weapons of mass seduction. Nowadays, women don’t have to look any further than their cosmetic kits to go from drab to dynamite. Whether a woman spends $6 or $80 on a moisturizer is up to her, says professional makeup artist Kimberly Seenarine-Pfeifer of Kajal by Kimberly. “I tell my clients the best bet is to do their own research and see which product works best for them,” she says. “Just because something costs the most does not make it better.” But not every woman has the right tools in her makeup arsenal. jstyle asked Seenarine-Pfeifer for her recommendations of makeup “must-haves.” Here are the seven essentials makeup items/tips you need to know:
moisturizer When shopping for moisturizer, it is important to know your skin type – oily, dry or in-between. Skin type changes with the seasons and tends to be dryer in the winter months, requiring a rich, hydrating moisturizer. Recommended drugstore moisturizer: Clean & Clear, $6.49 Recommended high-end moisturizer: Bobbi Brown, $40 22

mascara
The key to selecting the right foundation is matching your skin tone – either pink or golden. Foundations should contain SPF to protect against the sun’s harmful UV rays and to prevent extra wrinkles. While drugstore brands may be a better bargain, it is easier to get the right color match for your skin by stepping up to the cosmetic counter and consulting with a trained cosmetician. Recommended drugstore foundation: L’OrÊal, $11 Recommended high-end foundation: MAC, Bobbi Brown or Chanel, each around $40
Whether you select a curling, lengthening or thickening mascara, you don’t need to invest a lot to get the desired effect. However, ophthalmologists highly recommend you use a gentle eye makeup remover at bedtime to prevent infection ‌ and a site for sore eyes! Mascara should be replaced every three months. Recommended drugstore mascara: L’OrÊal, $8 Recommended high-end mascara: MAC, $14
bronzers/blushers Bronzers or blushers can provide an instant glow and “wake up a pale face. When selecting a blush, look for a color that matches your natural skin tone during moments when you are either icy cold or a rosy beauty. Recommended drugstore blush or bronzer: Physicians Formula, $10 Recommended high-end blush or bronzer: MAC or Nars, $25
lipstick When choosing a lipstick, find one that looks good on your face when you are wearing absolutely no makeup. The most flattering lip tones will be one or two shades darker than your natural lip color. To test shades, apply lipstick or gloss to one lip. If that color is just a shade or two deeper than your bare lip, then you’ve found your match. Recommended drugstore lipstick: L’OrÊal or Target’s Sonia Kashuck makeup line, $8 Recommended high-end lipstick or gloss: MAC, $17
makeup brushes eyeliner When properly applied as a thin line just above the upper eyelashes, eyeliner can frame the eyes and cause them to “pop.â€? Black eyeliner is often the most popular option, but women with blue, green or hazel eyes can warm them up by using plum or brown eyeliner. Women with brown eyes can wear any color liner. Recommended drugstore eye liner: L’OrĂŠal, $10 Recommended high-end eye liner: Stila, $16
Makeup brushes with natural bristles are best for applying powder blush, face powder, eye shadow or lipsticks. Use synthetic bristles for oil-based products like eye shadow base, cream eye shadows and concealers. Brushes should be replaced yearly and washed once a month. Avoid using the same makeup brushes for light and dark shades, and do not share your makeup brushes! Sharing brushes could lead to infection. Recommended drugstore brushes: Target Sonia Kashuck, $5-$20 Recommended high-end brushes: MAC, $15-$40L

Elegant and serene master bedroom, in shades of ivory, beige and black, overlooks backyard. Below, quaint yellow desk and chair are tucked into a sloped-ceiling guest bedroom.
Pale yellow walls, white woodwork, wide-plank blond wood floors, and two center islands – one for meat and one for dairy preparation – make the kitchen a kosher cook’s dream. White-painted beams stretch across the peaked ceiling, and a bank of high, narrow windows add more light and architectural detail. Soft white panel-door cabinets, a backsplash of creamy subway tiles, and black granite counters line one wall of the room. Pale granite streaked with gold tops the islands’ walnut-stained cabinetry. Behind a rough-hewn blond table and curved-back walnut chairs with rush seats, tall windows look onto pastoral backyard vistas. A door leads from the kitchen to the rounded flagstone patio with MontAlto’s take on a pergola. Its vertical pillars support overhead cross beams, ideal for the family’s red-draped succah each autumn as well as outdoor dining all summer. Back inside, the kitchen opens into a wide passageway with a contemporary sofa perfectly placed for outdoor viewing, and tall windows and French doors lead to the patio. There’s also an original butler’s pantry with new dark wood cabinetry and an extra sink for washing Shabbat dishes. In the adjacent dining room, a colorful contemporary oil painting by Howard Finster, whimsically titled “Van Gogh Sat Here,” with four versions of the artist’s famous chair, plays well against the mushroomcolored walls and yesteryear aesthetic. The teacher had no reservations about revealing his Oddy side to his students. “My stage persona and classroom persona are kind of the same,” he admits. Weber made her Oddy debut as an actor in July. • His parents Fran and Steve and sister Abby (a teacher at Gross Schechter Day School) have all been drafted as players on the Oddy stage. “Everyone around me is going to become an actor at some point if they know me long enough,” he warns.L
