“TRANS-CATEGORY migration.” It may sound like something the Canadian Geese get ready to do this time of year, but it’s the new buzz in men’s fashion. It means one-piece used a multitude of ways. Pair sport coats and suits with shirts and ties or with sweaters and open necks. Don’t discount jeans. They’re still an important fashion option. Jackets ride the fine line between sport coat and outerwear. The hot fall colors are browns and greys. Lux fabrics are the rule from cashmere to silk and supple suedes. South East Harley-Davidson and Buell in Bedford Heights was the backdrop for Brett Besunder, Craig Cohen and Adam Jaffe to model the best trends for men this season.
L Brett, left, wears a T-shirt, $32.95, jeans, $39, leather jacket, $395, bandana, $16.96, leather hat, $40, sunglasses, $30. His fluffy friend is $14.95. Meredith Goldstein from Orange. This 35year-old mother of two arrived eager to get the latest look for fall.
Great make-up starts with sculpted brows. The first step is to find placement of the arch and then tweeze unwanted hairs accordingly.
Cleansing with Nars Cream Cleanser, followed with Hydrating Freshening Lotion, gently exfoliates and preps skin for moisturizer. A crease proof concealer (Nars Vanilla Concealer) is applied over the lid to brighten and grab color. Nars Edie was applied under the brow as a highlight color. Kelly worked Nars Biarritz onto the lid and crease. She used Nars Fuji for the lid color, then finished the upper lash line with Nars Night Clubbing.
Use a white eye liner, left, like Nars Iceberg, to whiten and widen the eye area. Kelly applies Nars Bamboo mascara, a blackish brown since Meredith is very fair. Wiggle the mascara wand at the base of the lash to deposit color at the root. 50

It’s important to “swatch” at least 3 different foundation colors along the jaw line to find the perfect match to the skintone.
Buff Nars Flesh loose powder with a boton brush to set foundation and give an airbrushed finish. For Meredith’s perfectly sculpted brows, Kelly penciled Nars Jodpur brow pencil lightly, defining them.
Nars Papua lipliner over the entire lip defines and gives fullness to the lips. Apply Nars “Honolulu Honey” lipstick and top it off with “Caraibe” lip lacquer.
A radiant Meredith, the finished product. CLE VE LAN D J E W I SH N E W S

GOODBYE sweatpants, sneakers and flip-flops. Amy Schneider’s closet will get a major makeover as she begins her life as a young professional. The Beachwood native and 2007 University of Michigan grad is moving to Chicago to start a job as a recruiter for Apex Systems, an information technology staffing and A suit, the staple in every work wardrobe. Jacket, $228, pants, $128, and maroon shirt, $68, all from Ann Taylor.
recruiting company. Along with the scenery, her wardrobe will change from college student to young professional. As a student, Schneider, 22, wore a lot of sweatpants to class, a look she won’t be bringing to the office. Instead, she will be wearing office-appropriate clothing — suits, dresses, sweaters and heels. “I’ll probably be buying a lot more things that can go both ways,” Schneider explains, “things I can wear to work but I can also wear out at night.” So what to do with all those sweatpants? “I guess I’ll just save them for my days off and weekends,” Schneider laughs.

consisted of many plaids, boiled wools and Scottish lace. There were quite a few trench coats and dresses, and as far as I’m concerned, a trench coat is all I would ever own. They are timeless whether done for rainwear, formal wear or winter wear. London designers added some dramatic looks to the upcoming season. Giles Deacon is consistently doing the Brits proud with his highly dramatic looks. Nicole Farhi says she “was thinking about how I used to dress – elegant, but in a very French, relaxed kind of way,” and that’s how her collection looked. It was very sophisticated, but with a youthful appeal. England’s designers, like their actresses, suddenly seem to be a very commanding force. Next, we return to our shores for an American take on fall 2007. For my money, Marc Jacobs is number one in the USA. This fall he is focusing on subdued colors and chic tailoring. His pantsuits look exceedingly slim. Oscar de la Renta’s collection was described by Woman’s Wear Daily as “in a word, dazzling.” His collection includes dresses of wool crepes and tweeds as well as delectable eveningwear. size doesn’t matter downsizing empty nesters decorate with art and style by margi herwald zitelli photography by howard tucker
PATTI and Jerry Rogat thought they’d never leave Solon. Why would they? The couple bought land in the “up-andcoming” suburb in 1982, built their 3,000-sq.-ft. dream house, and raised two children on a street full of friends in a community they loved. But in 2003, the Rogats had an “aha” moment. “The kids were gone. The house felt too big. And we didn’t want to keep up the lawn,” Patti says.

“The house was 20 years old and needed to be redecorated,” Jerry adds. So, the Rogats joined the ranks of empty nesters looking to downsize. But there was one problem: They didn’t want to leave the area they loved. The solution? Moving into a 2,300-sq.-ft. condominium in Villas of Orange, a little over a mile away from their old house. “I’m happy not to have left the area,” admits Patti, a 12-year employee of Saks Fifth Avenue. “We pay our taxes now to Orange Village, but we shop in the same stores, go to the same dry cleaner, and still see our friends.” The Rogats’ condo is a freestanding two-story house with a finished basement. From the outside, the clean, white house looks identical to all the others in the development, but Jerry, a dentist with a practice in Highland Heights, explains that each is laid out differently inside. While the Rogats enjoy the privacy of their own house, a condo fee covers landscaping, basic maintenance and repairs, pest control, the alarm system, and care of the development’s common areas.

The Ludwigs added skylights to the living room ceiling to bring natural light into their home.
Plants and lights bring positive energy to a home.
Ludwig’s favorite part of her newly designed home is the patio and outdoor area, completed this spring in time for her son’s bar mitzvah. A landscape architect sculpted the area with plants to create an Eastern feel, and Pockar helped arrange the furniture. They used round tables to balance the very “square” feeling of the patio and added outdoor lights for more positive energy. The result is a patio and beautiful wooded outdoor area the entire family enjoys. “I definitely feel it’s more balanced,” Ludwig says of her home. “There’s a peaceful quality to the house.” Ludwig learned to prevent positive energy from flowing away from her home by placing two red chairs at the bottom of a

With its arty corner fireplace, the hearth room is a warm place to dine.
Bob commands his Lilliputian universe from a control panel lined with transformers and dozens of neatly labeled switches. Like many fathers, he began building the railroad to delight his toddler son, Eric, now 31. “My son outgrew it, but I never did,” Bob admits. “Now our 6-year-old grandson Benjamin runs it all the time, and I’ve added ‘Thomas the Tank Engine’ to please his younger sister Jessica.” While the lower level of the Frieds’ home gives a glimpse into a bygone era, their living space is thoroughly contemporary. The couple moved to the development of cluster homes in 2002. After 23 years in a Lyndhurst colonial, Laurel says she was eager to give up the stairs for the ease of a one-floor layout. “The reason we didn’t move sooner is that Bob couldn’t bear the thought of dismantling and rebuilding his train setup,” she explains. With the help of decorator Nadine Resor, the Frieds have created a warm, casual environment based on the interplay of shape, color and texture and enlivened with colorful art. Art is displayed in boldly painted niches.
Most of the walls in the house are sponge-painted in neutral colors, but the Frieds have used bold feature walls to lend visual interest and to highlight their art collection. One area marks the

moving to own a piece of israel by cliff savren
EIGHT years after moving to Israel and living in the same rented apartment in the Tel Aviv suburb of Ra’anana, we have finally become the owners of a piece of the Holy Land — another apartment in Ra’anana. The move went as well as could be expected. It took about two weeks to put away our essential belongings from the 70 cartons in which everything but our kids and cat were transported. We are now living on the sixth floor of an apartment building, and our living room looks out over a small city park. We are within walking distance of just about everything. home. “We are all individuals, and our homes should reflect that,” says Samek. “Why have a house that looks just like the one in the magazine or newest catalog? We invest in our homes, and our interiors should reflect it.” Even after fabric wears out or goes out of style, reupholstering can breathe new life into a quality piece of furniture, as long as the frame has withstood the test of time. According to MacDonald, the cost of labor for reupholstering a couch runs about $1,300. When shopping for wood furniture like dining-room sets or

Solid wood furniture, constructed from real wood all the way
High-quality wood furniture also has a wooden runner or center guide for drawers – not a metal one. Metal runners can bend, while wooden runners ensure drawers open and close easily. Shoppers should also keep an eye open for dust proofing, a layer of wood underneath the drawer that separates it from the cubby below it. The dustproof panels prevent dust from passing from one drawer to the next and signal quality construction. Anyone who has owned a table or dresser that has warped over time knows the importance of corner blocks and screws. “Grab the top piece and see if you can twist it,” Geller says. “When a piece is corner blocked and screwed, there is no twisting, and that reduces the chance that it will warp.” Shoppers can expect to pay $3,000 to $5,000 for a solid wood master bedroom set and $1,500 to $2,500 for a children’s bedroom set. Once you’ve selected the perfect couch or bedroom set, proper care will keep it looking good for years to come. Spills should be cleaned up quickly. Upholstered furniture should be vacuumed frequently and professionally cleaned on occasion, says MacDonald. Upkeep on high-quality wood furniture is simple, says Geller, as it only needs to be dusted every week or two. And “don’t reach for the Pledge,” he cautions. “It will only leave fin-

designer’s guide to refreshing a room:
The airy ladder shelves provide space to showcase personal items without overwhelming the room.
• Decide on the function for the room. • Capitalize on the architecture. Work around and with focal points, like windows and fireplaces.
• Lay out the room. Draw a plan so you can see the traffic pattern. • Do you want your room to be cozy or sleek and contemporary? A hip atmosphere or a traditional one? Or maybe something on the eclectic side.
• Find the balance between what you have and what you want to add. People change their tastes, and figuring out what existing pieces can be used with the new plan is important.
• Bring personality into the room via artwork, collections, family pictures and accessories. You can find new items or hunt through your house for existing pieces.
• Work within a set budget. Decide what you want to spend on the room in order to achieve your look.

But the reality is that modern moms have packed days: Jobs. Carpools. Laundry. Phone calls. It’s Friday and you’d like to make Shabbat, but there’s no time. Oh, well, you’ll try next week.
My husband does the same. It’s a moment our children look forward to. It shows them we are paying attention to what’s going on in their lives and that we love and appreciate them. This has worked so well, they want to bless us in return!
Instead of “canceling” Shabbat, why not order pizza? Think about

In celebrating Shabbat, you don’t have to do everything at once. Do what makes sense for your family. And when you’re ready, I highly recommend learning how to make homemade challah! I wish you a good Shabbat.

LOOKING good has nothing to do with age. A woman can be sharp and trendy whether she’s 20 or 80. Jstyle proves the point with 3 fashionable ladies who tried out the latest trends. Sylvia Spector says her fashion identity is petite, simple and elegant. When asked what age she sees herself as when she shops, Spector claims, “I see myself as an older woman. I am 85 years old, and I know it.” She really doesn’t think about her age that much and adds with a chuckle, “Maybe I should, but I don’t.” Spector exercises a few days a week and still works for Tri-C in the scholar and residents program. Eileen Drechsler turns 69 this month and is happy to tell anyone her age. “Just don’t ask me my weight,” she laughs. She sees herself as still in her 50s when shopping for classic and trendy styles. She loves to exercise, and travels with her husband. At 78, Mary Chaitoff proudly proclaims she never thinks about her age. She calls her style classic. “Every now and again I buy a “trend” but not usually.” A retired teacher, Chaitoff dresses in jeans everyday but still loves the feminine look of long skirts. Her taste for timeless pieces has not changed. She is an avid gardener of prize-winning orchids. 108

WILDLIFE photographer Alan Brown is proud to be “old school.” The Cleveland native, co-owner of Gallery One, a fine-arts studio in Mentor, still uses manual cameras and decries the imprecision of digital technology. images, some of them over 50 years old, stored in a safe deposit box. “I’ve never thrown one away,” he explains over breakfast at a Mentor eatery. “I never know when I’m going to use it again.” Brown runs the gallery with his wife Norah Lynne. Evocative landscape and wildlife scenes line the walls of their 20,000-sq.-ft. Center St. studio; Brown took some of these photographs using a Contax camera with German lenses. German optics, he claims, are the world’s best. Elephants, cheetahs, wildebeests, bears, and wolves are just some of Brown’s warm-blooded subjects. The photos he prizes most, however, were the ones he took in January 1994, when he and Norah Lynne spent a week in Rwanda to capture images of the mysterious mountain gorilla, whose plight as an endangered species was made famous by biologist Dian Fossey before her murder in 1985.

Jewish boy to go,” admits Brown, a bearded, bearish-looking man wearing a black T-shirt emblazoned with the name of his gallery.
Cleveland could not prepare the Browns for a 10,000-foot climb into the mountains. Guides with machetes had to cut a swath through dense undergrowth. The foliage was so thick on the path that it had to be constantly checked for depth, lest someone was unfortunate enough to plunge through.
Once the gorillas were sighted, the adventurous couple had one hour to observe them. There was very little light under the dense jungle canopy, recalls Brown, making the black gorillas even more difficult to photograph. But the couple were able to get very close to the apes, close enough to be touched by them. The results of this delicate intimacy are apparent in Brown’s photographs. One particularly expressive shot shows an orangeeyed gorilla scratching his chin in a very human gesture. Gorillas are the only animals he’s ever photographed where each one has an “individual face,” notes Brown. Once, the Browns got a little too close. They approached a silverback gorilla that was protecting a female and her baby. The 450-pound ape charged their guide, who knocked over Alan, who, in turn, flew into the petite Norah Lynne. “When you’re being charged by a gorilla, you don’t worry about getting its picture,” she quips.
Alan Brown’s shots of Rwandan gorillas are among his favorites.
Brown got nine rolls worth of shots in the Rwandan mountains. He was so protective of his film, he kept it strapped to his body at all times, even when sleeping, reports his wife with a

“I LOVE eating guacamole.” Sitting in the dining room of Paladar, his new Latin-themed restaurant at Eton Chagrin Boulevard, young entrepreneur Andy Himmel reflects on his favorite avocado treat. “It fills me up. And our recipe is so basic – it’s hilarious.” He will not, however, divulge the one secret ingredient that sets Paladar’s guacamole apart. Occupying a large part of the space that formerly housed Bossa Nova, Himmel’s Paladar opened in August following nearly two years of prep work and planning. After countless hours of work on menu, mixology, interior design, graphic design and customer service plans, Himmel’s favorite feature of his venture remains the guacamole bar.
