Margi’s GREAT ESCAPE:

cedarLEE D I S T R I C T by margi herwald zitelli photography by abby fine MOST Clevelanders are quite familiar with the corner of Cedar and Lee Roads in Cleveland Heights – It’s where we go to see all our favorite movies! But beyond the cinema, the CEDAR-LEE DISTRICT is bustling with food, shops and art. On a rainy, autumn afternoon I went exploring this Heights haven with a few friends from the JStyle staff: photo shoot stylist and custom media sales rep Gina Fabian, graphic designer Reuben LeVine, and events manager Zach Marcus.

WARM UP: After a goat cheese pizza feast at DEWEY’S, Gina and I come in from the cold for toffeeflavored coffee and freshly baked cookies and lemon squares at the STONE OVEN. It was so packed, we could barely find a seat.

VIEW MASTERS: From the overhead pedestrian bridge linking the Cleveland Heights-University Heights Library to its auxiliary building across the street that houses Dobama Theatre, Zach and I can see everything. (And it’s all wet. Ah, Cleveland in the fall!)

ART BREAK: Nonprofit arts organization and gallery HEIGHTS ARTS recently expanded, doubling the size of its exhibit space after eight years next to the Cedar-Lee. Executive director Peggy Spaeth gave me a tour of “Found Contacts” photography exhibit. Heights Arts also offers classes, produces public art, and appoints the Cleveland Heights poet laureate.

See next page for more pfotos.

CHECK MY FLOW: Reuben and I weren’t exactly dressed for the crash course in yoga we got at the ATMA CENTER. Atma has been on Lee Road 15 years, offering Satyananda yoga classes seven days a week. It even boasts its own library for “yogic studies.” CLEVELAND JEWISH NEWS

FAIR-TRADE LADIES: Gina and I found far too many dresses, tops, gloves, purses and necklaces at REVIVE we wanted to take home. The 5year-old fair-trade boutique carries sustainable merchandise from 37 countries, made by workers who are free from exploitation.

STORY TIME: THE LEE ROAD LIBRARY was renovated in 2005-2006, including an expanded children’s section that’s colorful and cozy. Zach reads one of my favorites, Dr. Seuss’s If I Ran the Zoo.

COCOA NUTS: MITCHELL’S FINE CANDIES makes its own chocolates right there in the Lee Road shop. The friendly staff invited Zach behind the counter, where he attempted to sell me some dark chocolate pecan confections. 12

TOTALLY FRIED: We stumbled upon the newly opened SWEETIE FRY, a fun little eatery that serves artisan ice cream and homemade French fries. Zach and I recommend the funnel cakes fries.

HOPS TO IT: Lee Road is probably best known for its bars – and there sure are a lot of them. Reuben, Zach and I dropped into BRENNAN’S COLONY for a quick break. (If we had time for another drink or two, I wonder what secrets I could have gotten them to spill?)

WRAPPING IT UP: Reuben and I made one last stop at ABRASH GALLERIE to check out its displays of imported art and housewares. After owner Tuba Gokoglu showed us her room full of rugs, we bid the Cedar-Lee District adieu. But we know we’ll be back soon … for movies and more. ▲

WANT

to add some razzle dazzle to your

life? Just spend a few moments with Lyndhurst artist Katie Marks. Every piece of art that Marks, 29, creates features glitter, sequins, crystals or spangles embedded somewhere on its surface. Her oil and acrylic paintings are implanted with crystals, her jewelry is adorned with bangles, and her blown-glass pieces are filled with sparkles. Marks even added shimmering sequins to the hotpink motorcycle helmet that matches her pink Buddy 125 scooter. “Ever since I was a little girl, I was attracted to colorful, reflective elements,” she says. When she was a 3-year-old budding ballerina, her mother, artist Karen Marks, noticed Katie was placed in the last row during a class dress rehearsal. “My mom asked my teacher why was I hidden in back, if I was the shortest and smallest dancer,” says Marks. The teacher explained that the reason was that Katie spent more time during dance class collecting the sequins that fell off of the dancers’ tutus than learning the demi-plié. Six years ago, Marks, a graduate of The Ohio State University and the Studio Art Centers International in Florence, Italy, moved back to her hometown of Cleveland after spending a year in New York as an accessories designer. She set up a studio in her Lyndhurst home and has evolved into a “very happy struggling artist,” she says. Over the past few years, Marks has experimented with many art forms and is particularly drawn to fashion. “Fashion allows me to express myself and my artistic interests,” she said. Marks eschews conventional fashion rules and freely combines brown and black or navy and black and enjoys wearing silver and gold jewKatie Marks uses her custom-designed sequined cell phone whenever she is on Bourbon St. At right, microphone designed for Nicki Minaj and phone designed for Britney Spears. 18

Marks’s penchant for glitter and glitz has caught the eye of more than one celebrity. She designed a pink Swarovski crystal-encrusted microphone for Nicki Minaj, which the hiphop artist used on her Pink Friday tour with Britney Spears

and in her May appearance on ABC’s “Dancing with the Stars.” The microphone took Marks 20 hours to create. “I placed the pink crystals in an elaborate mathematical grid,” said Marks. “I’m very detail-oriented, so every angle of the cone-shaped mic is symmetrical.” Marks has also designed a glittering Sidekick phone for Spears; a customized Sony Cyber-shot camera for Jennifer Lopez; and a unique Motorola Razr phone for Lindsay Lohan. “I have not met any of these celebrities personally, but it is a thrill to know they are using my creations,” she said. When a vintage clothing store needed someone to repair a stripper’s bra, they turned to Marks for support. “It was the coolest thing I ever did,” she says. “I sewed on rhinestones and medallions and made it look like two mini-chandeliers.” The artist is currently working on a series of edible necklaces. “I’d like to have my own TV show and become the Rachael Ray of art and design,” she says. “Perception is reality, and if people think I am famous, then I am.” With a middle name of Keshet (Hebrew for “rainbow”), Marks is a firm believer in positive auras and positive energy. “I try to surround myself with happy, colorful people because their joy is reflective – just like all my glittery art creations.” ▲

The flip side of the mercury glass style “bling is a natural look, another style that Paghi says is a big seller for over-the-fireplace. “It’s all about bringing the outdoors in, he says. “Most modern homes are bringing in touches of natural outdoors. The natural look is easy to create, he says, with snowflake-type items, white birch, twigs and berries that can easily be found at a local craft store, or if you’re feeling your inner Martha Stewart, from nearby woods. To bring more of the outdoors to your indoor fireplace, Paghi recommends cutting down some twigs and branches from a nearby tree, bundling them with some twine and placing them on the mantle along with pine cones or sugar cones. The “sparkle style can also be paired with this natural look, Paghi notes, pointing out that the white birch blends nicely

Another easy item to add to a mantle to keep the space trendy is a lantern, which doesn’t only have to hold a candle, Paghi notes. For fall or

says. “They would rather put the dollars into decorations they could keep up through the winter months. Leave the winter theme up there and let it go strong – because once March hits, we all want yellows and bright spring colors, he laughs.

Safety first! You may be all fired up about designing a stylish, trendy mantle, but don’t forget, most important is having a functional, safe fireplace. Jim VanCleef of Music St. Chimney in Chagrin Falls recommends having your fireplace cleaned in relation to how often you use it. If you use your fireplace once a month, or even less, you can go for some years without having it professionally cleaned, he says. But if you use your fireplace often, you should not only have it cleaned every year, but inspected for safety, too. A fireplace cleaning involves a thorough scrubbing of the inside from

A thorough inspection will involve a look at both the interior and exterior of the chimney, mostly looking for cracks and to ensure the fireplace itself is working correctly. That person introduces us to an ancient site or a tradition I knew nothing about.” Suddenly new pathways are revealed “that I would never had been able to discover on my own,” she says. if someone cannot climb a nearby mountain, it is not too bad to spend the entire day at the historic pre-Columbian 15th-century site,” says Weiss. While on a retreat, participants spend half a day in meditation in preparation for their visit to each site. Once at their destination, Weiss invites a local spiritual leader or shaman to lead the group in a traditional ceremony. Sometimes, Weiss feels like she’s “so tuned into the place that

Locally, Weiss has taken groups to the ancient Serpent Mound site in Pebbles, Ohio, near Cincinnati. “From a spiritual perspective, this 100-yard site is as monumental as the Egyptian pyramids or the Temple Mount in Israel,” says Weiss. “The serpent’s shape embodies the same solar, lunar and stellar alignments that are in all the pyramids in Egypt combined. The head of the serpent is aligned to the summer solstice sunset, and the coils also may point to the winter solstice sunrise and the equinox sunrise. Most Ohioans do not even know there is such a sacred site in their state.” Weiss, who has undergone training to practice and lead energy med-

It’s all about love. Love truly makes the world go round.” ▲

all know that the Inquisition came to Spain in 1492 … when

Columbus left to “sail the ocean blue.” It did not formally arrive in Portugal until four years later. On an adventure sponsored by Roads Scholars (formerly Elderhostel), we visited sites where Portugese Jews lived before the Inquisition and sites of importance during those terrible years. But even more interesting were our visits to emerging congregations in Lisbon, Porto and Belmonte, Portugal.

Lisbon: synagogues We visited Sinagoga Shaare Tikva (www.cilisboa.org), the traditional Sephardic synagogue founded in 1902. Women would sit in the balcony; a second tier was added in the balcony during World War II, when more than 45,000 refugees came to Lisbon. Today, only men come for minyan. A small, simple succah was next to the synagogue, and we were able to recite the brachot (blessings) there. We asked Hannah, a synagogue volunteer, to tell us her story: She was raised Catholic, but she was the only one in her school class who wasn’t baptized. The teacher frequently prayed for her soul. One day, Hannah came home to her mother, crying that she wanted to be baptized. Her mother said for something so important she should wait for her father, who 40

stones had crosses on them, but we could see a few where the crosses were removed and Jewish stars were engraved. Changes in the inscriptions of old tombstones continue to take place, as more families are proud to publicly proclaim their Jewish ancestors. Another new cemetery (from 1991) has also been consecrated. A beautiful museum has been recently opened, with Jewish ritual artifacts from the area and from other places. An ancient stone with an inscription from the synagogue in 1297 is included. Descriptive text in English helps to tell the story of Judaism and the role played by Jews of

was constructed between 1430-1460. The synagogue was only used until 1497, when an edict gave Jews less than a year to either convert to Christianity or leave Portugal. Documents since that time show that the synagogue has served as a prison, church, storehouse, hayloft, and common cellar. The museum was officially created in 1939. When renovating the structure next to it in 1985, a mikvah was discovered, but it has not been restored because of lack of funds.

Coimbra The site of the only university in Portugal until 1911, Coimbra was founded in the 12th century. We saw the site of the Inquisition palace, where a total of 72 women and seven men were burned. Another 408 were condemned, forced into slavery, and all property was confiscated. After 1492, more than 50,000 Jews arrived from Spain.

Hervás Hervás (just over the border in Spain) has a population of 5,000. It had a well-to-do Barrio Judio (Jewish quarter) of 40 families. Twenty five left – they had owned vineyards on the lower level of the city. There were 15 more well-off families who lived on the upper level of the city. Shop owners, bankers and professional citizens, they stayed and converted to Christianity, known as the “New Christians.” There was a synagogue, but nothing remains now except beautiful bronze plaques on the cobblestone streets with the word “Sepharad” and the family name in front of each home they once owned. Our local guide told us how each spring a play is produced, telling of the “celebration” that was held when all the remaining Jews converted. It

stick in his or her mouth. Unfortunately, there is not much you can do to stop them from eating food off the carpet.

4. Bring lots of entertainment. Kids need to be constantly entertained

on trips. For the most part, they don’t care about the ambience or the potential to learn about a different culture, and they get bored to tears while traveling. So, unless you want to miss out on your tour of the Oval Office because you’re busy trying to control a temper tantrum, make sure your child has got something electronic in his or her hand at all times.

5. Get connecting hotel rooms. Many parents get one hotel room for

the entire family to share. This may work for some but not for us. We tried it once. First of all, you have to play musical beds because the kids keep

changing their minds about whom they want to sleep with. Then, once in the room, you realize you’re going to have to go to sleep at the same time as the kids (which in our case was 7:30). Having two light sleepers, I was forced to sit in the bathroom reading until midnight, and my husband sat watching the TV on mute in closed-captioned mode.

6. Make sure to have the adult channels blocked. Along with the joy

of having your kids in their own room, you run the risk of your kids waking up at 4 a.m. and unknowingly turning on an adult channel. Unfortunately, 30759 Pinetree Rd. Pepper Pike OPEN 7 DAYS

would have wanted. We complained to management, who told us that we should have blocked the channel. It never occurred to us that a 5-year-old in search of cartoons would end up navigating through the process of ordering pay-per-view porn, but trust me on this – it can be done.

7. Order a fridge for the hotel room. Invariably, the kids will get up at

the crack of dawn (especially if you go from EST to PST) and start demanding food and drink. Unfortunately, the in-room coffee does not really do it for them; nor do ice cubes from the hallway machine. Unless your husband likes going down to the casino at the Bellagio in his jammies to track down milk and Pop Tarts, plan ahead and have these items in the room ready to go.

8. Bring earplugs and aspirin. There will come a point (or many) on

your vacation where your head feels like it will explode. This is likely to happen as a result of hearing the following over and over again: “Are we there yet?” “I have to go to the bathroom!” “I'm BORED!” “I'm hungry,” and my personal favorites spoken by one child to the other: “Stop touching me! Stop looking at me! Stop copying me!” The aforementioned headache could also be the result of large amounts of time at amusement parks ➣

earplugs come in quite handy on those long car drives. They muffle some of the screaming and whining, while still allowing you to hear sirens and your cell phone. They may also help you take a little snooze while your spouse is driving.

9. Get a sitter. You and your spouse will need some adult time during

your trip, even if it's only for one meal. Some people bring a nanny or a sitter with them. That's fantastic, if it’s an option. Most of us do not have this luxury. If you’re visiting family or friends, see if they can arrange a sitter for an evening or two. If not, see if the hotel you’re staying at offers babysitting services. You will be so glad you did this (the sitter won’t be as happy as you’ll be, but at least she gets paid).

10. Allow time to do damage control on your kids’ hotel room. My kids

have been known to trash a hotel room quicker than the legendary rocker Keith Moon. Their idea of unpacking is throwing the entire contents of their suitcases all over the room. Then they pull all the bedding off of the beds and scatter their toys, crayons and snacks everywhere. If you don’t want to end up paying renovation and repair fees for this disaster, you may need
