Holiday Valley Hit the Slopes This Winter By Matt DeFaveri

alk into the Inn at Holiday Valley in Ellicottville, N.Y., and you’re apt to find families or friends gathered around a roaring fireplace, melting off the bitter winter chill with warm beverages and crock pots of piping-hot soup. Beyond the fireplace sits a gorgeous spiral wooden staircase in the middle of the lobby, stretching up to a cathedral-style ceiling in an environment visitors call luxurious and comfortable. But Holiday Valley is a complete resort, and as tempting as hot cocoa and harvest pumpkin bisque sound, the real action is on the slopes.

Stay a while Located 179 miles northeast of Cleveland, Holiday Valley is the farthest ski resort within a three-hour drive. Nevertheless, Rocky River resident Marilyn Buckholz said the resort offers “the best, closest skiing around.” The resort features 58 ski slopes, 13 ski lifts and two surface tows. The Inn offers 95 rooms and seven suites, while the four-yearold Tamarack Club boasts 138 condominium-style rooms, ranging from deluxe hotel rooms with a queen bed, sleeper sofa and mini kitchen to three-bedroom condos. Rates for the Inn and

the Tamarack range from $161.59 a night to $1,229 for three nights, depending on the time of year. The resort also operates a rental management service for 250 townhouses, chalets and condos in the Ellicottville area. Monica Matia of Cleveland Heights bought a house four miles from Holiday Valley that she visits year-round with her husband Dave and children Meredith, Laurel and David. “There are many of us from Cleveland that drive up I-90 on Friday afternoons,” Matia said. “Me not having grown up skiing, it’s just an awesome, awesome thing

to do. There’s not enough time in the day up there.” While her children take lessons, Matia and her husband share appetizers and wine with friends in the Inn lobby. “There’s something for everybody – all levels of skiing for sure,” Matia said. “They put a lot of money back into the resort.”

One year there wasn’t any snow in the park, which is 10 miles south of us, so people came up here, found a big snow drift and ran the competition.” Skiers frequented the hill after that and built a rudimentary rope tow by attaching a rope to one of the rear wheels of an old car, then letting the car’s weight pull riders up. “People started coming here from Buffalo, Cleveland and Pittsburgh to ski,” Eshbaugh said. “It was just a really welcoming place. After the war, it was a nice place for people to go on the weekends.”

Eventually the Northrups stumbled across a perfect skiing valley and decided to open a public resort. “Doc would take people around in his Jeep up on the hill and Edna and her friends would sit at the bottom of the hill and try to sell stock in the resort,” Eshbaugh said. “They ended up with 100 stockholders. They started with three small slopes and built a lodge and a T-bar.” That T-bar – a kind of seat specific to ski resorts – holds special meaning for Buckholz, a 47-year skiing veteran who learned on some of the same Ellicottville slopes in use today. “When I first went there, I was climbing up a T-bar in the Tannenbaum area, which is probably the most picturesque part of Holiday Valley,” Buckholz said. “The

It was just breathtaking.” For skiers like Buckholz and Matia, personal ties to Holiday Valley run deep. Holiday Valley’s longstanding tradition of providing quality ski slopes and family-friendly experiences keeps its patrons coming back. Even 87-year-old Edna

ome may remember when packing for a trip meant having to sit on a By Sue Hoffman suitcase to zip or buckle it, then schlepping it single-handedly to the car, hoping to arrive at one’s destination without a hernia.

With swivel wheels, lightweight structures, expandable features, compression storage and a variety of new designs, today’s luggage represents a 360-degree turnaround. Not only is it more serviceable, practical and convenient, it’s also fun to pack, travel with, and spot on the conveyor in baggage claim. Road Warrior luggage, for example, constructed of ballistic nylon, can collapse and fit in a canvas storage sleeve for underbed placement. The stylish suitcase contains sealed ballbearing wheels; abrasionresistant, molded back panel; and aluminum handles. he 6-foot-9 Israeli looked infinitely more comfortable than he did at training camp a year ago, following a trade to Cleveland from the Sacramento Kings and a 149-day lockout. Maybe it was the new environment or the truncated schedule that affected him then, but the aftermath of a disappointing season melted away in the summer heat once Casspi had time to gel with the city and its fans. He teamed up with Tamir Goodman, dubbed the “Jewish Jordan” by Sports Illustrated, for a series of youth basketball camps and spent time scouting out a new pad on West 9th Street, eager and determined to return to the hardwood floor refreshed and ready for action. And through everything, he emerged victorious. Despite rumors in August that the team would buy out his contract, Casspi looked happy just living in the moment, sprawled out on the dark brown leather sofa after wrapping the photo shoot. Casspi shed his suit jacket and walked through the training court on his way to the locker room. He paused, bent over and picked up a basketball, methodically practicing his layups. Four with the right hand, four with the left. His smile belied his fatigue, but he looked loose and at ease. Any bad thoughts, any negative feelings from last season seemed to fade into nothingness, their very existence like a dream.

JStyle Looks like you’re catching some flak from your teammates. Omri Casspi Yeah they’re giving me a hard time, especially now we’re in the practice facility and they look at me dressed up in all my clothes. JS Who’s the most fashionable guy on the team? OC I’d say Tristan Thompson. I like Tristan’s style. He likes to dress up. Especially now with the dress code, everybody likes to dress up. JS Do you take fashion advice from him? OC Oh, no, no, no, no, no. (laughs) I’ve got my own private style and I like doing my own thing. JS Do you have a tailor here in Cleveland? He’s based in Columbus. He comes up twice a year to do my suits and whatever else I need.

JS What’s your personal philosophy when it comes to style? OC I like to get dressed up. I think it’s very important. Obviously, we’re playing in the NBA and we have a dress code, but at the same time, even if we didn’t have that, it would be very important for me. You have to treat yourself the way you want people to look at you. If you dress nice and respect the game of basketball and respect your fans, people look at you in a respectful way. JS How has your sense of style changed since coming to Cleveland? OC It changed more when I got to the NBA. We have tailors that make our suits and I really built my closet from scratch. When I was 21, 20, coming from Israel, I didn’t really have any sense of any style.

JS Have any players in the league influenced your style? OC My rookie year, I was good friends with Francisco Garcia in Sacramento. He was the one that got me into my tailors and got me into fashion and looking nice for the games. JS How have things changed after moving from Lakewood to West 9th Street? OC It hasn’t changed much. Contemporary Eyelid Rejuvenation The eyes are the focal point of the face. The eyelids therefore have a major impact on facial aging and appearance. Traditional surgical techniques to lift and tighten the eyelids often left a smoother but hollow, harsh appearance. The latest rejuvenation techniques emphasize maintaining eyelid volume and shape, not just tightenSteven A. Goldman, M.D. ing the lids. New techniques also incorporate surgical and non-surgical treatment modalities, and the eyelids are evaluated as part of the whole face. Skin quality, brow position, cheek volume, and other facial characteristics are considered when treating the eyelids. Brow rejuvenation often benefits patients who require treatment of their upper eyelids. Botulinum toxin injection (Dysport™ and Botox™) can be used to lift and arch the eyebrows in a balanced, natural fashion. This can be used in patients who do not require eyelid surgery or can be used an adjunct to surgery. The effect generally lasts 3-4 months and can be repeated. Patients with more severe droop of the eyebrows may benefit from a surgical brow lift, which is most often performed using an endoscope and small incisions in the scalp. A range of options exists for upper eyelid blepharoplasty (eyelid lift or tuck). Removal of excess skin can be removed comfortably in the office under local anesthesia. Some patients require conservative removal of excess fat that may bulge through the eyelid with age. Newer techniques avoid causing a hollowed-out appearance to the lid. Some patients may have true ptosis (droop) of the upper lid that may have to be addressed surgically. Lower lid treatment must specifically address an individual patient’s goals and needs. Non-surgical treatments can often have a significant impact and can be used alone or in conjunction with surgery. Dysport™ and Botox™ injections are the most effective treatment for crow’s feet lines

(even more effective than surgery). Aging and hollowing of the cheek can make the lower eyelid look droopy. In such cases, injectable fillers, like Restylane™ and Radiesse™ may be used to restore lost volume to the cheek. Skin care with Retin-A™ (retinoic acid) is used to smooth fine wrinkles and diminish age spots. Laser resurfacing of the skin can more aggressively diminish sun damage and wrinkles. Lower blepharoplasty (lower eyelid lift) may involve conservative removal of bulging fat and loose skin, which are the maneuvers performed in traditional lower blepharoplasty. However, over time this often creates a hollow, aged appearance to the lid, even if it is tighter. Newer techniques therefore emphasize repositioning of fat and redraping of the eyelid to create a more natural, smooth, and full appearance. Fat injection (using the patient’s own fat) into the cheeks can be used to further restore youthful fullness to the periorbital area. A spectrum of surgical and non-surgical options exists to rejuvenate the eyelids. Each patient is evaluated to determine the ideal combination of treatments for their needs. The eyelids are complex, delicate structures, so be sure to consult a board certified plastic surgeon familiar with surgical and non-surgical eyelid rejuvenation.

By their late 20s, they’ll be open to a shoe for comfort. Then they’re hooked. They realize how important it is that the

shoes fit.” Ungar said it’s ironic that people whose correct shoe size is an 8 wide stuff their feet into a 9 medium. “You can’t imagine the number of men and women who have corns, hammer toes, bunions, or have plantar fasciitis, which involves pain near the arch,” Ungar said. “We as shoe fitters care that the arch length of the shoe matches the arch length of the foot. That means the widest part of their foot fits in the widest part of the shoe.” Another important measurement is toe length, so the toes have room to wiggle, Ungar said. “It doesn’t matter if they’re a hard-to-find size or width. Their foot deserves to be fitted correctly. ou know it when you see it. The appreciation swells when you smell it, and the deal is sealed when you taste it. “It” is comfort food, an ongoing favorite in the Midwest. It’s heartland cuisine, all dressed up. Owners and chefs from some of Greater Cleveland’s most inviting restaurants say part of the reason for their success is they deliver food that’s familiar but also distinctive. Each of these restaurants has a specialty. Let’s start with Luxe Kitchen & Lounge, in the fashionable Gordon Square Arts District on the West Side. It’s the pasta that stands out to Luxe owner Melissa Cole, particularly the gnocchi. Homemade and handmade, it consists of potatoes, salt, flour, “a little egg and Parmesan,” yielding “pillows of melt-in-yourmouth loveliness,” she says. Topped with a light cream Gorgonzola sauce, people “go wild over it.” Cole also tips her hat to Luxe’s pork osso bucco, a variant on a dish traditionally made with veal. Pork is, after

all, the “other white meat,” and Luxe does it bone-in, yielding flavor that “stands up” to fall weather. Luxe relies on local food sources and runs on a philosophy of scratch cooking. “Everything is from the earth, everything has integrity, there’s nothing we are using out of cans or jars as far as the main staples on a plate,” Cole says. Luxe doesn’t use frozen foods, and all the meat is cut and butchered and all the bread baked in-house.

Finding that special flavor For a southern variant of designer comfort food, try West 25th Street eatery SOHO Kitchen & Bar, just north of the West Side Market. Open for a year, SOHO Kitchen features cuisine based on the southern palate, said Nolan Klonoski, chef and co-owner with partner Molly Smith. A veteran of Momocho, Tartine Bistro and Lopez y Gonzales, Klonoski and Smith surveyed the local scene and saw an opening for the SOHO menu of fried green “tomaters,” autumn pot pie, shrimp and grits, and veggie and peanut “meat” balls. By far the most popular dish is their version of fried chicken. “I think the city definitely loves comfort food, and that’s evident in pretty much every restaurant from the low-end places to the highend places,” Klonoski says. Because this is the Midwest, comfort food may be more popular here than on the East Coast, but “there’s also a foodie mentality,” he adds. “People want comfort food, but they want to be excited about it.”

Also stoking the foodie buzz are East Side restaurants Grovewood Tavern and Bistro 185. What tickles Grovewood owner Beth Davis-Noragon’s is Grovewood’s zinfandel short ribs. What knocks out Ruth Levine, Bistro 185’s owner and executive chef, is the boeuf bourguignon, a great seller no matter the season. A boneless short rib, brined and braised in red zinfandel wine and cranberries, the Grovewood dish is “very homey, very comforting and made with certified Angus beef,” Davis-Noragon says. Grovewood at times deleted it from its ever-changing menu, but there was such a protest it’s now a fixture. Grovewood also serves a more unusual type of comfort food, the maple adobo pork shank, made with maple syrup from Chardon. It’s a hybrid, she admits. “We spent a lot of the 1980s and 1990s doing all kinds of what used to be called ‘fusion,’ and apparently fusion is now a bad word,” Davis-Noragon says. “They

call it ‘mash-up’ instead. It’s the same thing. It means looking around and being inspired by other cultures and cuisines and applying the best things that you can find. “A really great example is a Korean barbecued short-rib taco.” Where does one find that? “Los Angeles.” Trained in French and Asian cuisine, Ruth Levine says comfort food with flair was a guiding principle when she and her husband Marc opened Bistro 185. The boeuf bourguignon – slow-braised with red wine, homemade beef stock, onions and aromatics including cinnamon and allspice – sells whether

it’s 90 degrees or minus 10. That, the gravlax with potato pancakes (“the ultimate Jewish comfort food”) and the coconut cream pie are perennial favorites, she says.

It’s the economy, stupid If “mash-up” is one factor in designer comfort food, the economy is another. When the market nosedived four years ago, high-end restaurateurs lost business, so they “started making their

food more casual,” says Mike Sanson, editor of Restaurant Hospitality, a Penton Media trade magazine. Comfort food “provides comfort in tough times, and because of memories you had when you were younger.” Chefs began to use more of the animal – “from snout to tail,” as Sanson puts it – and, in general, “dropped the level of their food to make it more affordable. But they didn’t want to make meatloaf.” Calling this cuisine “casual luxe,” Sanson cites the crispy chicken wings confit Jonathon Sawyer offers at his Greenhouse Tavern on East Fourth Street. These are wings with roasted jalapeno, lemon juice, scallions and garlic. On a related note, Cleveland chef Michael Symon has

brought the hamburger to another level, Sanson says. “What he’s done is create a whole chain of restaurants based on the concept that hamburgers are comfort food, but he’s elevated the concept to the B Spot. He’s done burgers but he’s sourcing his meat from Pat LaFrieda, one of the premier butchers and sources in New York.” Symon’s burgers are “very sophisticated and probably under $10. But they’re not $5.” Things have indeed changed since Bistro 185 opened in 2006, when the economy was booming. Because people are not as ready or eager to spend money, restaurants must offer less expensive dishes, stressing short ribs, say, instead of a pricier cut, Levine says. “It’s a piece of

That’s why you’re going to take this piece of brisket and braise it very slowly… to make this wonderful, flavorful piece of meat as opposed to doing a tenderloin costing three and four times the amount – and the profit isn’t going to be the same as on a short rib.” The sweet spot for an entrée is $20 to $25, she says.

Familiar but special At SOHO, the big seller is the fried chicken, served in both “mornin’” and “evenin’” styles, says chef/ co-owner Klonoski. The early version arrives with waffles, the later one with mashed potatoes. Both feature Ohio-raised chicken, 24-hour brining in a juice blending cider vinegar, brown sugar and “a slew of other stuff,” and frying in buttermilk and seasoned flour. “They’re both very classic,” he says. “But very different.” js

vintage Tannenbaum Trail Offers Unique Wine Experience

hile “chestnuts roasting on an open fire” grow in popularity during the holiday season, there are other – often more delectable and pleasurable – options. Perhaps it’s sharing a bottle of white wine with friends while catching up with one another and watching snowflakes softly fall on the open countryside outside a frosty window. Or it could be enjoying a glass of red wine while wrapped up in your favorite sweater and seated close to your significant other in front of a crackling fireplace. Luckily for area residents and visitors, Northeast Ohio offers both of those options and many more as part of the Tannenbaum Trail, a wine-themed event held over three weekends in late November and early December involving many of the wineries in Ashtabula, Lake and Geauga counties. “People just enjoy the idea of it,” says Larry Laurello, owner of one of the wineries on the trail, Laurello Vineyards & Winery in Geneva. “It’s really nice this time of year because we get a lull between the harvest and the holiday season,” he says. “It’s really nice for the people coming out because it gives them something to do late in the year when all the other events in Northeast Ohio have finished for the season.” The Tannenbaum Trail is an enjoyable way for longtime wine enthusiasts and newcomers alike to enjoy what Northeast Ohio wineries have to offer, says Ken Tarsitano, owner of Tarsitano Winery & Café in Conneaut. “We’re excited to be back on the trail this year,” Tarsitano says. Oftentimes, the wineries use the trail to introduce new wines – much to the delight of trail goers, says Donniella Winchell, executive director of the Ohio Wine

Producers Association. “A lot of 2010s will be ready for this holiday season,” she says, characterizing that as a good year for local wineries due to the mild temperatures late into the growing season. “There was a long enough season to have the vine mature and the fruit come off before the heavy frost,” Winchell says. “Northeast Ohio is a cool-climate region, and because of our severe winters, we’re limited in some of the cool-climate varieties we can grow.” The region produces everything from Syrah to cabernet on the red side to pinot grigio and Vidal blanc on the white, she says. While Ohio has been known for its sweeter varietals, like Catawba, in the past several decades it’s developed vintages more in line with and of a quality rivaling major wine-producing states like California and Washington. That Tarsitano’s winery is certified organic offers visitors a “unique experience,” he says. “We’re maybe more of a mom-andpop winery. We make our own food and grow our own grapes.” That experience also includes the acres of scenic farmland and rolling hills that can be seen from every window of Tarsitano’s Café, a barn converted from the days when the winery was

his great-grandfather’s dairy farm. While Laurello hasn’t yet decided what wines will be highlighted for the Tannenbaum Trail, trail goers can expect an inviting and vibrant atmosphere inside Visitors to Laurello Vineyards can also expect a one-on-one tasting experience, he says. “We like to have two girls sit there and do the tasting with (trail goers),” Laurello says. “We like to talk one-onone about the vintages, the grapes and what’s coming out of the vineyard year after year.”

How it all started The Tannenbaum Trail has been held for the last 12 years, Winchell says. “It started based on some ideas we literally stole from our friends on the Finger Lakes,” Winchell adds. “They host a huge event that attracts 1,500 people every year called Deck the Halls.” From 1,200 to 1,300 people are expected to participate in this year’s Tannenbaum Trail. “We usually don’t sell out until a weekend or two before, but we usually do sell out,” says Winchell, adding that “each of the wineries tries to put something special together for the event.”

In part, that includes providing unique, collectable items – like wine corks – at each winery along the trail that can be added to a 15inch table-top Christmas tree that trail goers will receive at their first stop – along with a Schott Zwiesel crystal wine glass. “(The Tannenbaum Trail) was designed to celebrate the holiday season, but more than that, to provide a season extension for the wineries,” Winchell says, explaining that the end of the calendar year is typically a slower time for wineries. “In the Finger Lakes, they were just looking to drive traffic when no one was coming,” she says. “We’re trying to build awareness of wines around the state, but certainly in Northeast Ohio, the wineries are interesting and fun.” Oftentimes it works, Winchell says, noting that over the years she’s heard reactions from trail goers that range from delight to surprise to planning a return trip. “‘I don’t believe Ohio wines are this good,’ ‘It really wasn’t that far from Cleveland,’ or ‘I’m going to go back and sit on the patio this summer and watch the stars,’” she says, recounting some of the feedback she’s received.

In addition to enjoying the wineries, trail goers are sometimes inspired to search for gifts at some of the nearby shops or take in some of the area’s scenic countryside. “Lots of times, they take an entire weekend,” she says. “There are lots of antique shops and lots of covered bridges that are beautiful, so there are lots of places to visit.” Winchell emphasizes that “access to quality wines ... at a time when local food is so much a part of

the trend” in Northeast Ohio is something that a growing number of people who visit area wineries are recognizing, and, she adds, those who take part in the Tannenbaum Trail will get a firsthand look at – or taste of – the trend. “It’s nice to see the wines keeping up with the food,” she says. “It’s very exciting to be part of Northeast Ohio’s food scene, which is very vibrant, and it’s exciting to see the quality of wine being recognized for what it is.” js

hort, dreary winter days make it more difficult for motorists to see runners and walkers. “One thing we’re preaching this year is safety,” says Jeff Fisher, co-owner of Cleveland Running Company. Many jackets are bright with reflective materials on them. Fisher’s store sells one in an iridescent pink for women, and offers a men’s version in bright yellow or orange.

Versatility is also important. Many shirts have half-zips that can be unzipped for ventilation after you warm up in intermediate weather. “We have jackets where the sleeves come off and it becomes a vest,” Fisher says. “The arms store in the back pocket of the vest.” He suggests evaluating whether a clothing item works in layers with pieces on top of or beneath it. “Against your skin you want something that moves moisture from your body,” says Fisher, who recommends polyesters and SmartWool. Wearing regular foundation during workouts can irritate the skin, but Bobbi Brown’s BB Cream “gives you a lightweight coverage that doesn’t clog pores,” says Bridget Horesh, store manager at Bluemercury in Woodmere. “It’s one of Bobbi Brown’s bestselling products.” Its “very moisturizing” quality is good for drier weather, and the SPF 35 makes it suitable for outdoor workouts. After exercising, check out skin care products from Dermalogica. This “facial line you can use for playing sports,” says Horesh, “is often recommended for acne-prone or sensitive skin.”

She suggests the essential cleansing solution and multiactive toner. Keep your hair out of your face with Violet Love Headbands by Rebecca Michaels. “They are unique, comfortable and headache free,” says Corinne Dodero, owner of The Black Orchid Accessories & More in Woodmere. Their motto is “Love me, wear me, don’t dare to share me.” The washable headbands are available in a variety of colorful prints, and they don’t stretch out. “They can be worn multiple ways,” Dodero says. “And they’re made in the USA.” “I’d recommend the Nike Free Run as a great option for cross-training,” says Colleena Patterson of Fleet Feet Sports in Pepper Pike and Northfield. “This shoe is extremely lightweight and flexible and allows the wearer to interact easily with the ground, especially during classes or weight-lifting workouts.” Because feet and needs vary, Patterson recommends a fitting process for athletic shoes that will be used for running, walking or working out. For Bikram yoga, which is done in a heated room, Jeannine LoConti says

The owner of Bikram Studio in Shaker Heights, LoConti sells different pants and shorts, but Shakti’s side-string shorts are her favorite. ”They’re short but not too short, they don’t move around, and they absorb sweat well,” she says. “I think they look great on everybody.” Going to yoga class?
