C

levelanders know a thing or two about music, especially rock ‘n’ roll. That WJW disc jockey Alan Freed was credited with coining the now ubiquitous term and that the first rock concert, Freed’s Moondog Coronation Ball, was held in Cleveland positioned the city to be named the home of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum. Likewise, Nashvillians know a thing or two about country music. In fact, Nashville is so steeped in the genre’s history that the city is home to the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum, making it a sister city of sorts to Cleveland — a sister with the accent and charm of a Southern belle, that is. “Nashville is the home of country music,” says Jenny Steuber, director of public relations for the Nashville Convention and Visitors Corporation. But Music City USA offers much more than twang – and warmer temperatures during typically cold Cleveland winters – as Northeast Ohioans making the trip from one hall-offame city to the other can easily discover.

Arts and culture A must-see when visiting the “Athens of the South” – a name Nashville earned due to its many universities – is the Parthenon in Centennial Park. First built as a temporary exhibit for Tennessee’s centennial celebration in 1897, the Parthenon – an exact replica of the Athenian Parthenon of ancient Greece – was so popular that it was rebuilt as a permanent structure in the 1920s. “It houses the city’s art collection as well as Athena,” says Steuber, referring to

8

Jstyle Winter 2013

Athena Parthenos, a 42-foottall replica of the original statue of the same name. “She is the tallest indoor structure in the western hemisphere.” Another noteworthy artistic destination is the Frist Center for the Visual Arts, another must-see, in downtown Nashville in an art deco building that was built in the 1930s as a post office. “The interesting thing about the Frist is that they don’t have any permanent collections,” Steuber says. “It’s all either borrowed or stuff the Frist curated themselves and will travel to other places. If you come every couple of months, you’ll always see different things.” Other attractions include the Belle Meade Plantation, a former horse-breeding plantation built in 1807 that Steuber says is “a beautiful house that has a lot of Civil War history attached to it” as well as a winery, and

the Cheekwood Botanical Garden and Museum of Art. “It’s a gorgeous mansion, and then upstairs is a beautiful art gallery,” Steuber says of Cheekwood. “They’ve got 55 acres of gardens and the estate you can walk through.”

Dining and shopping Nashville is a “city of neighborhoods,” says Steuber, adding that’s where visitors will find many of the city’s best restaurants and most popular boutiques. There’s the Hillsboro Village neighborhood, home to Fido, a former pet store that Steuber says is now a “coffee shop that’s great for breakfast or lunch,” and Cabana, a dinner-only

restaurant that specializes in casual Southern comfort cuisine and is home to unique, reservationsrequired cabanas – pillowladen booths surrounded by curtains that allow semiprivate dining for parties of two to 12. Cabanas also come with an iPod/music player hook-up for guests to control their music as well as a TV to watch shows, sporting events or a BYO DVD experience. There’s the 12South neighborhood, home to imogene + willie, a “funky little store that does tailored jeans,” Steuber says. “You buy the jeans, and they tailor them to you.” There’s

cocktails and New American cuisine.

Music scene also Leona, a “great little boutique” belonging to designer Laura Leonard that specializes in high-end contemporary women’s clothing, swimwear and bridesmaid dresses. 12South is also home to Las Paletas, which serves gourmet popsicles in exotic flavors like Mexican caramel, rose petal, pineapple basil and hibiscus as well as more traditional flavors like mixed berries or strawberries and cream. “That’s a local favorite,” Steuber says of

Las Paletas. The Germantown neighborhood is home to Rolf and Daughters, which Steuber says was named a 2013 best new restaurant by both Bon Appetit and Esquire magazines. East Nashville, where many musicians and recording artists live, “has that funky hipster musician vibe, and it has a lot of vintage shops,” Steuber says, and is home to Holland House Bar & Refuge, which has a speakeasy feel and specializes in handcrafted

Getting to Nashville The 520-mile, eight-hour drive from Beachwood to Nashville is longer than the typical Jstyle Great Escape, and perhaps longer than some may wish to drive. Northeast Ohioans are in luck, though, since flights to Nashville depart from both Cleveland Hopkins International Airport and Akron-Canton Airport.

10 Jstyle

Winter 2013

Despite its many other offerings, there’s no sidestepping the fact that Nashville is largely known for music. In addition to its permanent exhibit, the hall of fame hosts a number of rotating displays, including fall exhibits featuring the wardrobe worn by the cast of TV’s “Nashville,” costumes worn by Carrie Underwood during her Blown Away tour, and a spotlight exhibit that through June will feature recording artist and actress Reba McEntire. There’s also the Grand Ole Opry, the famous weekly country music stage concert, as well as Ryman Auditorium, which was home to the Grand Ole Opry from 1943 to 1974 and still

hosts many noteworthy artists. For a grittier music experience, Steuber suggests Honky Tonk Row, a “row of different bars that have live music all day every day.” Bands play for tips, not a cover charge. “It’s a rowdy and fun way to spend an evening with friends,” Steuber says of Honky Tonk Row. “You can catch half a dozen bands if you bop around from bar to bar, which you can do with no cover charge.” All told, there are about 120 venues for live music in Nashville, and shows range from rock, pop, bluegrass and folk. Music fans unsure of where to start can download to their smart phone the Nashville Live Music Guide app. “It will tell you where music is based on the date and neighborhood, and if you take a picture of where you are, it will scan it and tell you where live music is around you,” Steuber says. js

O

pened on Sept. 8, 1931, the Silver Grille at Higbee’s served as a dining oasis for shoppers during downtown Cleveland’s department store heyday. Occupying the 10th floor of the Higbee Building, the Silver Grille was renovated in 2002 and is now overseen by The RitzCarlton, Cleveland as an event space that plays host to parties, social functions and weddings. With its art deco grandeur, ornate fountain, and sophisticated palette of palm greens and Burgundies, the space evokes a more prosperous era. But it provides more than nostalgia. The Silver Grille greets its guests with a sense of style, elegance and je ne sais quoi that offers an experience unique to Greater Cleveland. – Michael C. Butz

sense Rae and Jack Phillips reflect on Cleveland fashion Story by Carlo Wolff | Photography by Michael C. Butz

jstylemagazine.com

S

ixty-five years on as man and wife, Jack Phillips still has a crush on Rae. They finish each other’s sentences. They snuggle at the drop of a hat. Affection has bonded them ever since Jack met the former Rae Fleishman in the late 1940s, when both were counselors at a summer camp in Maryland between Baltimore and Jack’s native Washington, D.C.

Jack married Rae in Baltimore in 1948. The Shaker Heights colonial they have lived in for more than 60 years is filled with mementoes of trips to the Far East, Europe, Australia, Latin America, and Asia. They did Russia. They bought in England. They bought in Bangkok. They often mixed business with pleasure on their journeys, stocking up on unusual clothing and fabrics to sell in their storied Rae Phillips Inc. boutiques. The couple is known for its fondness, worldliness and, above all, its sense of style. Jack and Rae Phillips are fashion mavens, their look – and uncanny ability to make women look good, even under protest – legendary. And if their time is past – at least in regard to the retail of today, when, as Jack puts it, price trumps product – their loyalty to panache never wavers. “When we were buying, the people who were there at that point in history, don’t exist today,” Rae says of designers she used to adore like Molly Parnis, Halston and Mary McFadden, Bill Blass, and Shannon Rodgers, who designed for Jerry Silverman. “The things they were doing and we were doing ain’t there anymore. “I wouldn’t work with anyone who would ever lie to me,” she adds. "I was very nasty to some people because they deserved it. If you have any sense, you don’t stand back. They all knew me and they didn’t do anything like that.” Honesty, straightforwardness and integrity remain watchwords to both Phillipses. Jack is not alone in saying

jstylemagazine.com

Rae wouldn’t let customers leave until and unless they looked good. She would rather forego a sale than sell wrong. “They came to me because I gave them the prices and the colors, and (I told them) if you want to buy it, buy it,” Rae says. “They looked for things that were right to them and I would have things in the store that I knew were going to be good.” Merchants she dealt with “always gave real good things, and that was another good way to keep your inventory the way it should be.” Rae could be merciless. If a woman hankered for clothes that didn’t suit her, Rae would parry with the lady until she left a Rae Phillips boutique looking better than she had ever imagined she could. And Rae could be impolite about it. “I never gave anyone something that didn’t look right on her,” says Rae. That attitude struck a chord, helping create a repeat clientele. “I never went anyplace else,” says longtime fan Barbara Rosenthal, a Cleveland woman who is development director of the Cleveland Hillel Foundation. “Rae had an incredible sense of style, and knew what was good for each customer. She was very frank and very strong and would tell you if something was not right for you to wear.”

Setting Cleveland’s fashion tone Rae wears her silver hair trim and sassy and occupies sleek, close-cut suits as if born to them. Signature, oversized glasses underline her fashionista status. Jack, meanwhile, favors argyle and other patterns, polo shirts and comfortable slacks. The Phillipses are definitively business casual, even at home. On a recent September day, Rae, who says her hair used to be “coal black,” wears a sleek Harlan suit. It’s gray wool, collarless, slim, and, even after 40 years later, to-die-for chic. She favors it “because I would not let anybody,” she

starts to explain, “sell you anything you didn’t like,” Jack finishes. Between 1956 and 1996, this personable power couple owned and operated Rae Phillips Inc. stores on Cleveland’s East Side, first at Fairmount Circle in University Heights, and later in Beachwood Place and Pavilion Mall in Beachwood and Eton Chagrin Boulevard in Woodmere. Only three were open at any one time. When they closed their last store, at Pavilion Mall, on Christmas 1995, lamentation arose among the Phillips faithful, according to contemporary newspaper accounts. The shuttering “snapped yet another fragile link between the personalized fashion of old and the grab-it-and-go attitude of today,” said an article in the Plain Dealer. Women who shopped at Rae Phillips stores still speak of them with wonder and regret, conjuring a time when the dress was more important than the price tag. Their husbands, it seems, also miss the experience. “Part of the reason they worked so well together is because of the incredibly close relationship the two of

them had, and as a customer you knew that,” says Philip Weiss, a retired radiologist who lives in Moreland Hills with his wife, Deborah. “It wasn’t that she would say something and he would correct her,” he adds. “Vice versa, it was they really spoke the same language. They fit together.” “Like a puzzle,” says Deborah, a retired schoolteacher who used to shop with her mother at Rae Phillips Inc. “They couldn’t have been better business partners.” It was a partnership to the manner born. The Phillipses moved to Cleveland from New York City in 1951. Jack was armed with a master’s of business administration from New York University, Rae with a bachelor’s degree in fashion from Syracuse University. Jack began his local career

at Halle’s as an assistant to the fashion merchandise manager. After a few years, they pooled their resources – Rae, who lost her parents in a car crash just before she graduated from high school in Mullins, S.C., had some family money, and Jack had his business degree and experience from working at his uncle’s D.C. women’s specialty shop – and opened the first Rae Phillips Inc. in Fairmount Circle. The year was 1956. Downtown Cleveland bristled with stores like Higbee’s, Halle Brothers, SterlingLindner, and Bonwit Teller, each with its own specialty women’s apparel department. Telephones were rotary dial, television was largely blackand-white, credit cards were in their infancy, and there were no discounters, let alone big-box outlets. The Internet was science fiction, if that.

Time to open a boutique offering couture style at reasonable prices. Time for Rae Phillips to shine. Which she and Jack did, adding stores to the Fairmount Circle original over the next 15 years. Known for trafficking in big-name designers, Rae also “scours the side streets off Seventh Avenue (in New York’s garment district), looking for the rising young designers who will be the Halstons of tomorrow,” recounted an article in the Cleveland Press in 1978. “It seems to me that what I call a realistic price – $75 to $175 – was being neglected in Cleveland,” Rae told the longdefunct afternoon newspaper. “That was 22 years ago, and I think we are meeting a need.” “Ideally, I wanted to open up through the state of Ohio, and the concept was really price points,” says Jack. “It was a look at a price, whatever the price we decided was, and the look was classic, elegant and highfashion but it wasn’t couture Left: Rae and Jack Phillips alongside Rae Phillips Inc. employees. prices.” He would have liked to develop a statewide Rae Phillips chain, but, he says, Rae resisted. As for expanding to the West Side, no need. When a group of West Side women told Rae, “we need you,” and offered to bankroll a Rae Phillips in their neck of the woods (thanks to their husbands’ money), Rae responded efficiently: “You’re here, aren’t you?” In 1971, it was time for Rae and Jack to make fashion history of a national sort.

It’s a wrap During a buying trip to New York, a mutual friend working with a manufacturer of upscale tennis wear introduced the couple to Richard Conrad. Rae and Jack said they weren’t interested in carrying tennis garb. Conrad called a few months later, telling them “he had something he wanted them to see,” Jack says. Conrad asked them to sign a package he would send them, adding they were free to open it but couldn’t throw it away. “When it came in, our people who were unpacking thought it was a dishrag,” Jack says. “It was wrapped up in a plastic bubble. I thought it was a dishrag, too, and so did Rae.” Rae couldn’t figure out how to try on this curiosity, so Conrad urged the Phillipses to come to New York the following week to meet designer Diane von Furstenberg. In New York, Rae, with von Furstenberg’s help, managed to put on the dress and agreed to host von Furstenberg on a visit to Cleveland. At a cocktail reception for von Furstenberg at their Fairmount Circle store, Rae

The afterglow

Phillips customers wanted to snap up these inaugural wrap dresses, but were told they had to wait until the following day, when von Furstenberg guested on “The Morning Exchange.” Before they drove down to Channel 5 the next morning, the Phillipses drove by their store to see lines of eager customers. Long story short, they sold out their initial allotment of 200 by 3 that afternoon, when Jack ordered another 200 from Conrad. Not bad for a dress that retailed for $70, “a moderate price for a feeling of couture,” Jack says.

The business changes While their customer base was heavily Jewish, they also had “a good black clientele,” says Jack, who with Rae, belongs to The Temple-

Tifereth Israel in Beachwood. Rae Phillips stores did a lot of prom business, catered to the Junior League, and above all attended to the needs of professional women. Mothers and daughters would shop together; so would the mother of the bride and the mother of the bar mitzvah boy. The stores also did special-order business, clothes in custom colors and swatches. In addition, Rae Phillips, primarily at the original store, did brisk business in alterations, which cost extra. “Our fitters knew the customers like the salespeople knew them,” Jack says. Even as they considered expanding statewide, discount stores began to spread, along with big-box outlets and online purchasing. The Phillipses

began to drift away from retail clothing. “I think I felt apprehensive before I felt the effect businesswise,” Jack says. “I’d seen what was happening in other cities with friends, and I didn’t feel that either of us were tuned into that way of doing business. Our concern was finding the proper garment for the customer as opposed to finding the price the customer wanted to pay.” Travel, too, beckoned ever more urgently, especially since Linda, their younger daughter, lives in Perth, Australia. (Amy, their other daughter, lives in St. Louis.) Retirement came gradually; when they realized neither daughter would take over the business, Jack and Rae switched focus to the travel they so enjoyed.

When the Pavilion Mall closed, Deborah Weiss could no longer shop at Rae Phillips Inc., as she had since she was 15. But she continued to shop with Rae. They would go to discount stores known for their women’s designer apparel and Rae would say, “Put this on, I’d put it on,” Weiss says. “Both Rae and Jack have been the best of friends,” she says. “They’ve traveled all over the world. They’re just great, interesting and kind people.” Her husband, Phillip, suggests the Rae Phillips stores were a form of salon. “They obviously bought much of their clothing in New York,” he says. “They’ve been to plays. You could always talk about that. “You could always talk about almost anything with them, and if you ever wanted a restaurant, you were going on a trip, you’d say, Rae, where should I eat? “They would say, ‘Well, there’s this little place …’ ” Rae and Jack Phillips always knew how to make a woman look good. They also knew how to invite friends into their special, sophisticated world. They still do. js

The two were re-introduced in Miami two years later, after which they started collaborating. Selita Ebanks for Ryan Haber Collection, a resort-oriented line, will launch in 2014. n any given weekend, Cleveland’s esteemed restaurants are bustling with activity. Servers rush from table to table while patrons wait for the next one available. The sound of forks and knives clinking against plates fills the air as guests sip cocktails and laugh during conversations with friends and family. Upon first glance this may look like a typical Saturday night out in Cleveland, but it’s actually mid-afternoon. Diners from across Northeast Ohio have traveled to this restaurant to enjoy weekend brunch, a trend growing rapidly throughout the city. Tal Rothstein, 26, is a young professional who enjoys the brunch trend. She can often be found heading to brunch with her husband, Brian, on a

Saturday or Sunday afternoon. Brunch serves as the perfect compromise for Rothstein and her husband, who have different tastes when it comes to food. “I’m not a huge breakfast person, but my husband is,” Rothstein says. “Brunch is always a great compromise because I can eat lunch food and my husband can eat breakfast.” The pair will typically go to one of their favorite brunch spots, such as

Brunch

Big Al’s Diner in Cleveland Heights or Grumpy’s Café in Cleveland’s Tremont neighborhood. Other times they’ll look for new places to try, after reading online reviews of restaurants the Cleveland Heights couple has yet to visit. The couple views brunch as a relaxing start to their weekend. “It’s pretty casual for us,” says Rothstein. “It’s an easy thing to do. It’s not a huge time commitment. It’s relaxed and more casual than going out to dinner.” While some see brunch as a way to wind down after a busy workweek, others use it to ease into a new day. Twenty-seven-year-old Max Soroky says

he always eats brunch on Sundays, usually following a fun night out in Cleveland. He heads to brunch with a group of friends for some pick-me-up food before sitting down to watch Sunday football on TV. “It’s a good time to just kind of relax, whether you’re with your family or your friends,” says the Mayfield Heights resident. “Brunch food is comfort food.” Soroky often drives to one of his go-to brunch places that are “consistently good,” like Corky and Lenny’s or Jack’s Deli and Restaurant. Other times he’ll head farther west to restaurants in Tremont such as The South Side, which is one of his favorite brunch spots. “The South Side has the best food,” he says. “They have unique types of dishes, like their chicken and waffles, which are amazing, or breakfast burritos. It’s always nice to have a varied lineup on the menu.” Soroky is encouraged to drive farther west in search of restaurants serving brunch after his friends suggest new places to try. Even though some are a bit of a haul, Soroky is typically not disappointed. It’s word of mouth that’s

Winter 2013

serving as a driving force behind people venturing out to trendy neighborhoods like Tremont and Cleveland’s Ohio City in search of brunch. These neighborhoods have recently seen an uptick in the number of people stopping by restaurants on a Saturday or Sunday afternoon. “Younger people like brunch to cure their last night’s partying, often with a good Bloody Mary,” jokes Rachel Kingsbury, assistant general manager at TownHall in Ohio City. “Younger people have more of a zest for life and a desire to get out and enjoy themselves,” she says. “They all work so hard during the week that they deserve a nice, relaxing meal with friends or family on the weekends.” Tremont has experienced an increase in the number of restaurants serving brunch on Saturday or Sunday afternoons, leading to more people visiting the neighborhood. “Tremont is a walking community so people are always out walking,” Owen says. “If people are out walking their dog enjoying a nice Saturday afternoon, they’re able to just pop in and sit down and have brunch at

a nontraditional breakfast or lunch time.” But it’s not just the young crowd that is seen out at brunch. Families, older couples or singles can all be found on weekends dining at some of Cleveland’s best restaurants. Going out to brunch is becoming an important part of people’s lifestyles. “People look at brunch as a way to go do something socially with their friends,” says John Owen, co-owner of Press Wine Bar in Tremont. “They may not have time to catch up with them at night, so it allows groups of people to get together.” Press Wine Bar opened last November on Professor

Avenue. Although brunch was originally not included on the menu, it was added just a few months later. Owen says the restaurant’s brunch menu focuses more on breakfast items, such as challah French toast, egg skillets and their signature item, Crab Benedict. Press Wine Bar is also the only restaurant in Cleveland that features a mimosa kit. “We offer all kind of different mimosas and juices,” Owen says. “We actually call it a mimosa kit.”

The kit comes complete with fresh fruit, four fruit juices and a bottle of Prosecco for customized tableside mimosas. The restaurant is also known for its selection of Bloody Marys. TownHall, which opened this past May on West 25th Street, has attracted a large customer base by offering healthy and fresh options on its brunch menu. “What sets us apart is our fresh ingredients and the quality of the food, in addition to the well-rounded menu,” Kingsbury says. The menu boasts a variety of brunch items, from Benedicts made with roasted red tomatoes and basil to southern-inspired dishes, like buttermilk biscuits with sausage gravy. A customer favorite is the build-your-own crepes station, where guests can choose from more than

a dozen sweet or savory toppings and watch the crepe assembled right before their eyes. TownHall also offers an extensive juice menu, with house-made cocktails, freshly squeezed fruit juices and mimosas. Besides being a fun thing to do on weekends, brunch is helping increase the bottom line for restaurants. Those that include brunch on their menu have experienced a surge of customers walking through their doors on the weekend. Owen says adding brunch to Press Wine Bar’s menu has had a drastic impact on his business. “People generate people, so when people see other people having brunch, they tend to stop in to eat or have a drink,” he says. Owen adds that brunch has become much more

popular for bridal showers or bachelorette parties, which has led to an increase in weekend business. “A lot of people are choosing to have brunch for a bachelorette party versus going out on a Saturday night,” he says. Kinsgbury has seen a similar trend in Ohio City. She notes that on any given weekend people can be spotted shopping at the West Side Market, exploring vintage stores on the street and stopping at restaurants for brunch afterward. “With the rise of all the restaurants and all the different styles of menus, we’re drawing people in and making the area a destination,” she says. “It’s not just about the one establishment, it’s about having the Ohio City experience.”

Whether it’s a young professional searching to cure a night’s worth of partying or a family stopping by a restaurant during a day out in the neighborhood, brunch is playing an increasing role in revitalizing communities and supporting local businesses. “People really have a sense of building their community and helping out small businesses,” Kingsbury says. “Brunch really draws a large crowd. It gives somebody something to look forward to on the weekends.” js

evelry is in the air during the holiday season. Whether celebrating Chanukah or New Year’s Eve, opening one’s home to guests or heading out for an evening on the town with friends, a festive atmosphere envelops Greater Cleveland. Ambience, food, music, décor – all play an integral role in setting the tone for a successful celebration. But one detail can bring everything together: the right cocktail. Oftentimes, the right cocktail is a flute of elegant and effervescent champagne, the everpopular sparkling wine that hails from the Champagne region of France. “I think everybody’s initial point of sight are the bubbles,” says Dina Kostis, a sommelier, or wine steward, at Pickwick & Frolic’s Champagne Bar on East Fourth Street in downtown Cleveland. “The bubbles are exciting and they’re friendly – that’s what gets people excited.” Champagne is a festive

drink that exudes luxury and class. It’s traditionally the drink of choice for toasting special occasions, and it pairs well with party guests who are dressed to celebrate. “People use it because it’s a little more expensive and something they can use to celebrate all different kinds of occasions,” says Mary Lapham, the beverage manager at Fleming’s Prime Steakhouse in Woodmere. Fleming’s offers about five different champagnes from which guests can choose, says Lapham, adding that Fleming’s occasionally hosts special events – like champagne tastings – around the holidays. The Champagne

Bar, which is the only champagne bar in Northeast Ohio, has eight champagnes available by the glass as well as more than 70 varieties of champagne and sparkling wine available by the bottle. The bar’s menu is broken down into flavor profiles to help first-time guests navigate their way through the dozens of champagne offerings. This holiday season, the Champagne Bar will feature bottles of Grower Champagne, boutique styles of champagne that are made by small producers or independent growers. Whatever one’s preference is for gathering to enjoy this festive season, there’s little denying one common thread. “Everybody wants to have a little bubbly to make a toast during the holidays,” Kostis says. “It’s celebratory.” js

Retail Renaissance Shopping experiences trend toward local shows, vendors By Michael C. Butz

S

hopping is often more than an action or means to an end. It’s an experience — one frequently shared with others and enjoyed at least in part due to the location and what it offers. Daylong excursions to downtown Cleveland’s renowned department stores are fondly remembered by generations of Northeast Ohioans, while others recall weekends spent at the mall. But Higbee’s and Halle’s are long gone, a handful of the region’s malls have gone the way of Randall Park Mall, and the recent economic downturn left several shopping centers riddled with big-box vacancies. Rising to fill the void – and

46 Jstyle

Winter 2013

leaving their own distinctive mark on the retail landscape – have been artist- and artisan-fueled indie arts and crafts shows. Such shows are growing both in popularity and numbers in Greater Cleveland, where in recent years there’s been a groundswell of support for local businesses. “There’s definitely the whole ‘shop local’ movement, especially in Cleveland, where people really support their hometown,” says Becki Cooper, founder of AvantGarde Art & Craft Show. “A lot of people show Cleveland pride and want to keep the community thriving – especially since we haven’t always had nice things written about us.” At Avant-Garde’s first show in June 2011, there were about 45 vendors. These days, each of the 10 shows

– two in Rocky River, two in Solon, two in Fairlawn and four in Columbus – Cooper organizes annually hosts about 100 vendors, or the maximum the community center event hall in which the show is held will accommodate. Driving demand are the hundreds of Northeast Ohioans who attend each show looking for unique things: jewelry made from antique brooches, upcycled glass dishes and doorknobs, hand-dipped candles, handmade pepper mills or paintings done on driftwood. “(Avant-Garde shows) have really gotten larger, and I think once people come to our shows, they see it’s not your average mom-and-pop craft show and they want to keep coming back,” says Cooper, a 27-year-old Solon resident who grew up going to Beth Israel-The West Temple in Cleveland but now splits her time between Beth Israel and Park Synagogue in Pepper Pike and Cleveland Heights.

The Cleveland Flea, a monthly urban flea market based in Cleveland’s St. Clair-Superior neighborhood, started in February with about 20 vendors and 1,500 visitors and grew to about 110 vendors and 8,000 visitors at its show in October at Sterle’s Country House. Founder Stephanie Sheldon says “a lot of energy” surrounds The Cleveland Flea, explaining that the live music and many different food and drink options make it “a place to see and be seen.” Sheldon agrees that a desire to shop local, combined with the increased use and popularity of websites like Etsy and Pinterest, have contributed to the growing public awareness of indie craft shows – especially in the Midwest “It’s that Rust Belt mentality that cities like Cleveland, Detroit and Pittsburgh have where we’re very resourceful and ‘local-centric,’ so we end up wanting to support our local

artists and local community. This is a perfect storm for that,” says the 34-year-old resident of Cleveland’s Ohio City neighborhood, adding visitors to the flea get to meet the makers themselves. “I call these people small businesses and artisans. ... They’re serious about their businesses, they’re not just hobbyists.” Sheldon says many of the vendors have created a community of their own – a point with which Katie Plato, who owns Something To Be Found and has had a booth at three Cleveland Fleas, agrees. “Before, I wasn’t active in this scene, but when you see other artists, you feel like you’ve become part of a whole new group of friends,” says the 32-yearold Lyndhurst resident, who growing up attended Suburban Temple-Kol Ami in Beachwood. “It’s a whole

jstylemagazine.com

network of people.” Though The Cleveland Flea and Avant-Garde capture the recent trend, indie craft shows aren’t an entirely new phenomenon. Cleveland Bazaar, formerly known as Bazaar Bizarre, started in 2004 and dubs itself the “Northeast Ohio’s longest running indie craft show.” Its centerpiece holiday show is held each December at the 78th Street Studios in Cleveland’s DetroitShoreway neighborhood, the former home of American Greetings’ creative studios. Cleveland Bazaar started with about 20 vendors and “a few hundred” attendees, said founder Shannon Okey. It’s grown to about 100 vendors and more than 5,000 attendees, and in recent years, Cleveland Bazaar has added its presence to the Larchmere Holiday Stroll due to a request from the merchants association there.

Photos / Michael C. Butz

“When you provide a great experience, though, word spreads. It’s a lot more fun to shop in a building filled with artists and music and food trucks for handmade items than it is to trudge to the mall,” says Okey, referring to the 78th Street Studios show. Indie craft shows tend to draw crowds as diverse as the items they sell, a phenomenon Okey says she sees play out through Cleveland Bazaar. “We have such a range of customers – suburban

moms and urban guys, young and old, all income levels – we don’t aspire to serve just a ‘hipster’ crowd, for lack of a better word,” says the 38-year-old resident of Cleveland’s West Park neighborhood. “Yes, a lot of the vendors and products we have are edgy, but as I can tell you from my days of co-owning a retail store here, it was the white-haired ladies who bought most of the swear-word-encrusted crossstitch kits we stocked, not the young ‘skinny-jeaners.’” js

ead down the driveway along the west bank of Rocky River’s namesake waterway and you’ll come across a row of homes that look like nothing else in Greater Cleveland. Welcome to the luxury townhomes at Eleven River, an Andrew Brickman development that neighbors Cleveland Metroparks’ Rocky River Reservation. Graceful, tall and assertive, these ultramodern homes hug their hillside across from the Emerald Necklace Marina like sentinels of the future. Just looking at them is calming. Just looking at them – not to mention “touring” one – gives you a glimpse of what may be the

new iteration of Cleveland housing. Eleven River townhomes straddle the high-tech and the natural with aplomb, they’re aesthetically pleasing, and they do their environment proud. Let Brickman lead you into the unit at the southern end of the two-acre site, where

the owners have put their own stamp on the décor and furnishings. Come into the living room, with its raised kitchen and dining area, and you’ll see that an Eleven River townhome is both comfortable and surprising. Check out the Vietnamese monkeywood dining table. Marvel at the LED-lit elevator with its glass doors that ferries owners up and down the four floors. Check out the textured wallpaper in the bathroom adjoining the nature-motif den where a tall, slim programming box lords over another small room.

For a soft and oddly buoyant change of pace, step onto the rooftop deck overlooking the diverse landscape. From the rooftop, you can get a glimpse of the neighborhood, which situates residents both a stone’s throw away from Lake Erie’s shoreline as well as within walking distance of Old River’s boutique shopping and the many businesses along Detroit Avenue. Whether you look inside or out, aesthetics triumph in this project, a transformation of a rugged hillside tract into an upscale, modern enclave. Unlike so many suburban

developments, Eleven River makes no bones about being different. Eleven River is anything but traditional. Which makes it no less timeless. “Each individual residence is designed to the specifics of the particular owner or family who lives here,” says Brickman, a Little Italy resident who developed Clifton Pointe in Lakewood, the Brownstones at Derbyshire in Cleveland Heights, and the 27 Coltman townhome complex in Little Italy. What’s so striking about Eleven River is the way inside and outside work together. These homes seem organic, as if custom-built for their leafy, watery locale. They are

52 Jstyle

Winter 2013

open, their construction clearspan (no supporting pillars intrude on a room, lending flexibility to wall design and placement), Energy Star windows letting in lots of light even as an exterior coating protects privacy. The rooms are large, the ceilings 9 or 11 feet high. The heating is geothermal – Brickman said it reduces the use of fossil fuels by up to 80 percent – and the construction, always a challenge on a hillside, is based on caissons drilled so deep into the ground the resistance they finally encounter ensures stability. There’s a special airiness to an Eleven River home, as well as a sense of play.

The people who own this one clearly love nature. Some walls are textured like fish scales, a chandelier at the entrance conjures a waterfall, and on the master bedroom level, bathroom mirrors, strategically located between windows, further blur exterior and interior, underlining the organic nature of the place. Brickman’s talismans are openness and thinking “green.” The greenness shows in the low-flush, dualflush toilets, environmental programmability via touchpad or smartphone, use of no-maintenance composite on porch decks, an organic feel based, paradoxically, on technology, and landscaping

consisting of indigenous, hearty plants – perennials and grasses – that don’t require pesticides. For a really good example of the coexistence of nature and high-tech, consider this: the rooftop deck consists of articulated tiles of redwood or oak that weather naturally and don’t require chemical upkeep. They sit on a “bed” of recycled rubber tires, giving the deck unexpected, relaxing buoyancy. While these angular Eleven River homes, as elegant as mathematics, are striking, they’re also accessible – and, while they look like nothing else on Greater Cleveland’s cityscape, they’re inviting. Not to mention beautiful. js

Eleven River

T

he luxury townhomes of Eleven River are designed as blank canvases, allowing those who live there an opportunity to be artists. In the space featured by Jstyle, the owners employed a geometric approach, using furniture that’s both edgy and elegant. There’s an intellectual satisfaction to this equation – an equation that explores and puts together the concepts of linearity and leisure.

he couple living at the luxury townhome featured by Jstyle uses splashes of bold color from art and accent pieces like vases, lamps, rugs and throws to set off the natural tones of their furniture and harmonize with the earth tones that filter in from the outside. Where pops of color can’t be used, statement mirrors or eye-catching lamps will also work.

Winter Wonders Sledding at Cain Park and ice-skating in University Circle are among Northeast Ohio’s many fun-filled winter activities By Ed Wittenberg

E

very winter, the family of Liza and Naftali Wolf looks forward to the snowfall so they can head over to the sledding hill at Cain Park in Cleveland Heights. The Wolfs, who live in Cleveland Heights, have four sons – Avi, 9, Yonah, 7, Yishai, 4, and Eli, 2 – and they all enjoy tackling the slope on South Taylor and Superior roads when it gets covered with snow. It’s been a family tradition for the past eight years. “It’s outdoor entertainment for the kids,” says Liza, who also answers to her Hebrew name, Ruti. “In winter, there’s

not that much for kids to do, plus it’s great exercise for the kids.” Naftali, 36, is a lifelong Cleveland Heights resident who has been sledding at Cain Park since he was about 5. But Liza, 34, grew up in South Florida, so when she moved to Cleveland Heights after she and Naftali were married 12 years ago, she didn’t want any part of freezing her fingers and toes in the snow. “When we first talked about it, I was like, ‘I’m not going out in the snow – are you crazy?’” she says. “Now I enjoy it, but I’m a beach girl, so I wish the winter was a little bit shorter.” The Wolf children attend Hebrew Academy of Cleveland, an Orthodox Jewish day school in Cleveland Heights, so their parents like it that they get to meet children from different backgrounds on the sledding hill at Cain Park. “I remember from when I was a child, the diversity and variety of people there, and everybody had fun,” Naftali says. “It’s still like that today. It brings the community together. “It’s a really great Top: Children climb the sledding hill at Cain Park in Cleveland Heights. experience for our children and the other children. The kids have a blast. I hate to admit it, but I have fun, too.” The Wolfs have about a half-dozen sleds, including a big inflatable tube sled, but “everybody shares,” Naftali says. “The tube is definitely a fun ride.” “It’s filled with air, so it slides really fast down the hill,” Liza adds. Liza offers these tips for fellow sledders: “Make sure to wear double socks and double gloves because it can get very cold. And keep your car warm for the ride home.” Other winter activities the Wolfs enjoy include building snowmen and snowball fights, Liza says. “Skiing is something I would like to try,” she says. “I also would like to try tobogganing with the kids at the Cleveland Metroparks (in Strongsville).” The sledding hill at Cain Park, owned and operated by the city of Cleveland Heights, is open to the public all winter, and there’s no charge. Another free winter outdoor activity is iceskating at The Rink at Wade Oval, at 10820 East Blvd. in Cleveland’s University Circle neighborhood. Skating opens there Friday, Nov. 29, and will remain open until early March, depending on the weather. There is a $3 charge for skate rental. For rink hours or more information, contact Sheila Obrycki at 216-707-5035 or sobrycki@ universitycircle.org. js
