What was your “Bridezilla” moment? “I met with my makeup artist four to five times before my wedding, but the day of, she showed up on drugs, sluggish, sleepy and was almost two hours late. Tensions may have been flaring during this but I do have to say I really kept my cool!” “None! At 50 years of age, I’m too old to be worrying about the small stuff.”
“I was a very laid back bride, but not when it came to the flowers. I had a vision of what I wanted my centerpieces and bouquet to look like, and I kept pushing the florist until they got them right.” “I had wanted to take outdoor photos at Squires Castle but it was raining that morning. What do you wish you’d paid more attention to? “My husband.” “The venue was a bit cramped and it was difficult to get to some tables.” “I didn’t know then about many Jewish traditions, especially yichud and a beautiful ketubah. I should have learned more.”
“The flow of pictures and what specific pictures I wanted. Because my makeup artist was two hours late, we lost a lot of time for pictures and it was sort of a mad dash to get the important ones. In hindsight, I wish I had made a priority list.”

ar-hopping bachelorette parties in Cleveland’s popular entertainment districts are regular occurrences, but more creative and unique options exist for area brides-to-be, and they’re increasingly centered on bonding with friends By Michael C. Butz

Bachelorettes who wish to celebrate their approaching wedding day with an indulgent spa experience among friends need look no further than Spa Walden in Aurora. “Within the past year-and-a-half, we’ve seen a huge push towards brides wanting to do more connecting-style bachelorette parties rather than go to a bar,” says spa director Jenessee Taylor. “We’re seeing people connecting more and bringing it to the spa and doing a weekend getaway.” Spa Walden, which puts a premium on privacy, time and customizing each guest’s experience, offers nine private single-use spa suites and three private group spa suites. Whatever the arrangement, bachelorettes are afforded the opportunity to socialize and celebrate together. “They can do Champagne or chocolate-covered strawberries, so it becomes a more lively spa-party atmosphere instead of a be-quiet-while-you’re-in-the-hallway environment,” Taylor says. One of Spa Walden’s most decadent offerings is called the Bride’s Day Leading Up To The Big Day, a six-hour package that includes two 90-minute services and two 60-minute services (plus two 30-minute prep times at the beginning and end) as well as lunch for the bride. Some bachelorette parties make a night of it by booking accommodations at the connected 23-room Inn Walden while others arrange for limo or party bus services to take them from the spa to their evening’s next location. Other Walden amenities include yoga and even horseback riding. Whatever the bachelorette’s preference, Taylor recommends booking at least a month in advance for weekend reservations. Away from the hustle and bustle of urban and suburban life lies Ohio wine country, which offers bachelorette parties a fun and relaxing escape. Donniella Winchell, Ohio Wine Producers Association executive director, says the Winery at Spring Hill in Geneva, the Old Firehouse Winery and The Lakehouse Inn & Winery, both in Geneva-on-the-Lake, often play host to bachelorette parties. The latter two also offer amazing views. “Watching that sunset with a glass of wine in hand and talking to good friends is always an amazing evening,” Winchell says. “I think a lot of folks are looking for more than just food and alcohol, and this is an experiential opportunity.” In addition to tastings and pairings scheduled throughout the summer, wineries offer the most authentic and distinctive way to experience wine, Winchell says. “Bachelorette parties look for a fun experience, which certainly exists, but it’s also an opportunity to show off to their guests – many of whom may be from out of town – one of the most appealing attributes of northern Ohio,” she says. Wineries don’t generally take reservations, Winchell says, but a bachelorette party can usually call ahead and let a winery know it’s coming so staff can be prepared to accommodate during busy summer weekends. Winchell strongly suggests drinking responsibly – and arranging transportation services well in advance. Limo and party bus services in wine country quickly book up in the summer. Philadelphia-based Colors & Bottles has been hosting events in Greater Cleveland for about two years. As the name implies, each event is part painting class (for artists of all skill levels) and part social gathering (for revelers of all skill levels). Several public events are held each month throughout the region at places like bars, restaurants, parks and gardens, but Colors & Bottles’ services can also be retained for private events (minimum 12 guests) such as bachelorette parties. For a flat per-person fee, Colors & Bottles provides a local artist to lead the class, an event coordinator, a 16x20 canvas, an apron, acrylic paint, two paintbrushes for each participant, and setup and tear-down services. Bachelorettes choose the painting to paint, the date and time, and the venue, which can range from indoors to outdoors or from home to a restaurant. Whether buying from a bar or providing your own drinks, each event is BYOB. The Greenhouse Tavern’s front and rear mezzanine areas can each host about 30. For true insiders –groups no larger than 20, please – there’s the Chef’s Table, inside The Greenhouse Tavern’s kitchen.
Nighttown offers three separate areas for rehearsal dinners: Stephens Green, the original patio, for up to 100; the Secret Garden for up to 70; and the Music Room, where Nighttown stages its jazz concerts, for up to 150. The average rehearsal dinner size is closer to 60. Nighttown hosted 30 such dinners in 2013, already has many booked for 2014 and even some for 2015 – so reserve a table early. hat giant cup on an end table in the living room of the Cleveland Heights house Aaron and Alli Ruff rent is far more than a novelty. That cup holds giant memories.At one critical point in the couple’s brief life together, that cup held two gallons of coffee, a special French press blend concocted by Antoine Franklin, the Phoenix Coffee Company barista who effectively acted as best man. Not best man at Aaron and Alli’s wedding. Best man at Aaron’s proposal. It took place just after the morning rush at the old Phoenix location on Coventry Road in Cleveland Heights. That cup carried a special message: Aaron wants to spend his life with Alli. “Marry me?” said the cup. In liquid script. Was Alli shocked by the form of Aaron’s proposal? “I think I was,” she says. “Aaron’s not really a biggesture kind of guy. He’s kind of low-key. We’re not really, like, we want to be the center of attention.” They certainly were that Saturday. And they enjoyed it – as the YouTube video that captured the moment suggests. Once she got over her shock, Alli also loved how Aaron proposed. Aaron smiles a lot. Alli hugs a lot. There were lots of witnesses. They’re smiling, too. “Random people – total strangers – were taking our pictures,” Alli says. “I get really nervous. So I was super-nervous. I mean, I was excited. It was a mix of superexcited and super-nervous. You can see in the video that I’m super-nervous.” In a recent interview at the Phoenix (it’s still on Coventry, now a few blocks farther north), Aaron and Alli – who took winding roads to get to the Phoenix table at which they effectively launched their life together – seemed to speak as one as they told their whirlwind love story.

Aaron is from Milwaukee. Alli is from Boca Raton, Fla. They met through JDate in 2011, when both were new to Cleveland. Aaron works in internal audit and accounting for Eaton Corp. Alli is a resident in internal medicine at the Cleveland Clinic. Both moved here at the end of May 2011, in the same week, Alli thinks. In late 2011, they had their first date, at the Fairmount Martini & Wine Bar in Cleveland Heights. Alli was rushed and tired

that evening due to work, but Aaron was persistent, so they met – OK, an hour later than originally planned – and hit it off well enough to schedule a follow-up date just two days later. That’s when they rendezvoused at a very busy Great Lakes Brewing Company in Ohio City, the day the annual Great Lakes Christmas Ale was first tapped. At the time, Aaron was renting an apartment on West Sixth Street in Cleveland,
Alli a place on Coventry near Euclid Heights Boulevard. Aaron soon joined in with Alli’s habit of frequenting the Phoenix for a morning cup of Joe, then adjourning to the nearby Inn on Coventry for pancakes. As for the giant cup used during the proposal, Aaron credits his mother. She told him she’d seen an outsized cup in Milwaukee, so Aaron, intrigued, approached the Phoenix, eventually connecting with Antoine, a

barista whose latte artwork has starred in national coffee contests. Antoine says he had some difficulty preparing the custom brew, especially with the crema, the frothy topping bearing the indelible words, “Marry me?” But he

persevered, and the crema held. “This is easy for him,” Aaron says, suggesting Antoine protests too much. “This is the most important day of someone’s life,” Antoine counters. Both sets of parents were hiding in the Phoenix kitchen, adding pressure to the situation, Alli says jokingly. Alli actually thought Aaron might propose the night before. At a party at work, a pocket call from her mother in which she heard Aaron’s voice blindsided her. Her mother had inadvertently dialed Alli’s cell phone, prompting Alli to listen to a conversation between her mother and Aaron that she wasn’t supposed to hear. She shared, too. “I quickly hung up and everybody at the Clinic listened to (the voicemail) and that’s when they said, ‘You need to go home right now,’” she recalls. Alli still has

her mom’s voicemail on her phone. She went right home, but the proposal was not to pass that jumpy Friday night, so a disappointed Alli and a wound-up Aaron spent the evening watching “A Christmas Story.” The following morning, Alli was tired and cranky, resisting Aaron when he said they had to go to the Phoenix. “We gotta, we gotta go,” he told her. It was a sign, though she couldn’t put all of it together quite yet. At 9 the morning of Dec. 15, 2012, with Alli still a “little suspicious,” Aaron popped the question. Rather, the request was delivered in a steaming, oversized cup. And just before, there were other signs: Aaron dumped a bunch of change into a parking meter even though the first 30 minutes are free. And he barely touched the sprinkled doughnut he ordered. “As soon as I saw the

cup coming out,” Alli says, “she was in shock,” Aaron concludes. Aaron, however, had control of the situation. As soon as the giant cup of coffee was delivered, he dropped to one knee, telling Alli a hug wasn’t enough; she also had to stand up. “He said, ‘you’re supposed to stand up,’” she recalls, smiling.

Inner Beauty A bride can look and feel her best by paying attention to what she puts into her body – and onto her skin – in the days and weeks leading up to her wedding By Kristen Mott

All brides want to maintain a healthy appearance and body weight for their wedding. Registered dietitian and nutritionist Jane Korsberg in Beachwood recommends a wellbalanced diet filled with fruits, vegetable and whole grains. “To have outer beauty you need to start from within and treat it well enough from within through healthy choices and good nutrition,” Korsberg says. “When you fill your body up with junk, your body seems to reflect that also in your outer appearance.” She suggests brides stay away from highly processed foods, sugar-laden beverages or overly caffeinated drinks, and to drink plenty of water. It’s also important for brides to remember to eat amid all the excitement during the days leading up to the wedding. “A lot of brides get so nervous they just forget to eat,” Korsberg says. “Even at rehearsal dinners they’re too excited to eat. But it’s important to continue to maintain a healthy and well-balanced diet.”

A flare-up of acne is one of the last things a bride wants to experience on her wedding day. To prevent breakouts, Dr. Faith Durden cautions against consuming excessive amounts of dairy products. “There’s a good amount of data that shows there may be an increased risk of fair to moderate flare-ups of acne when consuming large amounts of dairy,” says Durden, a dermatologist at Western Reserve Dermatology in Beachwood. Dr. Lisa Meek, an aesthetic/medical skin care and laser specialist at the Parker Skin and Aesthetic Clinic in Beachwood, advises brides to stay away from bad carbohydrates, including sugars, refined grains and high fructose corn syrup, which can wreak havoc on skin. Instead, opt for antioxidant-rich foods such as almonds or blueberries. Brides also should drink plenty of water to flush their overall body system of toxins.
Issue: Thin Hair
Korsberg says hair issues, such as dry or thin hair, are often genetically related, but can sometimes be nutrition-related. Brides with thin hair may be deficient in certain proteins or vitamins B and D. Brides who go on strict fat-free diets also can end up with very dry or brittle hair. “Stay away from any kind of extreme dieting that could affect your hair,” Korsberg recommends. Meek says brides with thin hair can try increasing their intake of omega-3 fatty acids, found in flaxseed oil or fish oil, which can improve the appearance of hair.

Brides planning a summer wedding must take extra caution to protect their skin against sun damage and sunburn. For brides who apply sunscreen but still end up with red skin before the big day, Durden suggests using milk. “Milk baths or milk compresses can be helpful in soothing the skin and can be used multiple times a day as needed,” Durden says. She recommends using a bland moisturizer, like Cetaphil or Aquaphor, after each treatment.
Issue: Brittle Nails
Nails that easily chip or break are often subjected to harsh environments. Korsberg notes that extreme temperatures and washing hands too often can result in weak nails. She recommends keeping hands moisturized and to moisturize from within by drinking adequate amounts of water. Meek adds that taking biotin supplements can be incredibly helpful for improving the quality of nails.
Issue: Oily Skin
Although oily skin is often linked to elevated androgen levels, which can be caused by stress, Durden says cornstarch can help act as an oil absorber. Several skin care products available at drugstores use cornstarch as an ingredient to combat oily skin. Durden recommends Cetaphil’s oil control foam wash and moisturizer to keep skin shine-free.

For brides who want to boost their energy levels without drinking coffee or energy drinks, Meek recommends green and white teas. “I’m a big believer in green teas,” she says. “They’re filled with amazing antioxidants and can also help the skin.” She advises brides to stay away from pure fruit juices, which can pack on a lot of calories and sugar, and lean more toward vegetables and vegetable juices. jsw

ersatility and “mixability” are critical when it comes to making drinks for weddings. That’s why veteran bartender Tommy Mullady says Champagne and ginger beer fill most every wedding drink bill.
Champagne, to underline the obvious, is the Champagne of wedding drinks. It’s not only the traditional toast (especially in the summer) and the icing on the cake, it’s the not-so-secret sauce behind all manner of drinks designed to make a joyous occasion even more joyous, suggests Mullady, a bartender at the BottleHouse Brewery, a small-batch brewery in Cleveland Heights that also sports a select, sophisticated bar. Used to be wedding planners would order by volume, their purpose to offer as many choices as guests might make. Buy a few brands of vodka, some different bottles of whiskey, some gin, some scotch. Based on the premise that the après-wedding party should offer something for everyone, that made for expensive drink purchases. Nowadays, says Mullady, the scope is narrower, the aim more direct. The design of the drink is more important than the range available. So be sure to have a lot of Champagne on hand. Ginger beer, too (we’ll get to that later). And gin. Not
to mention vodka, still the hottest seller in the spirits world. Champagne and gin, Mullady suggests, work very well together. Take the French 75, a concoction born during the Jazz Age of the 1920s at Harry’s Bar, the Parisian boite known for Ernest Hemingway hanging out at the railing. Named after a gun the French military used in World War I, the French 75 calls for two ounces of gin, a teaspoon of superfine sugar, a halfounce of lemon juice and five ounces of dry Champagne. It goes down easy. And as the years wore on, it became demilitarized and morphed into the French 95 (same drink, only with bourbon) and the French 125 (the drink with brandy). With gin “and a couple extra little things, there you go,” says Mullady, who always has his leather valise nearby. The satchel contains books of drink recipes he’s collected over the years, including a 1949 book on how to be a perfect host, published by Esquire magazine. “The other big craze and something that’s also really
versatile is ginger beer,” Mullady says, adding he’s put together his own “sweet and spicy” version over the years. A nonalcoholic, brewed soda, ginger beer’s mixability comes through loud and clear in the Moscow Mule, a cocktail that first saw the light of day in wartime Los Angeles. Like gin, ginger beer can go with bourbon (for a Whiskey Buck) or any whiskey but scotch, says Mullady, who has been a bartender for some 30 years. “Women seem to gravitate toward drinks with ginger beer,” he notes. Another appealing wedding drink is Pimm’s Cup Cocktail, a blend of the venerable British herbal cordial Pimm’s No. 1 and ginger beer, garnished with a cucumber circle or long wedge. “That would definitely be for a summer wedding,” Mullady says. “I try to offer them some versatility from single products so that they can spend – but not spend so much – and get a lot of quality for what they spend,” Mullady says about helping people choose drinks to serve at their wedding. jsw

Traditional Delight reception guests with interesting (and appetizing) hors d’oeuvres By Kristen Mott
W
ith so many guests attending a wedding reception, it can be a challenge to select hors d’oeuvres that appeal to everyone’s tastes. John Taylor, the executive chef at Executive Caterers at Landerhaven in Mayfield Heights, says the key to satisfying guests while still keeping appetizers interesting is to add creative, subtle twists to traditional items. “Taking familiar items that are approachable but adding a twist will make them exciting and attractive to guests,” Taylor says. Taylor says guests gravitate toward hors d’oeuvres that are seasonal, green and local. Guests also prefer items that are colorful and recognizable. For fall weddings, Taylor suggests doing a twist on bruschetta, a popular Italian appetizer. Instead of topping the pieces of grilled bread

with garlic and tomato, Taylor recommends using diced butternut squash and goat cheese. “It’ll capture their attention and they’ll try something new because it’s approachable,” he says. Taylor also puts a creative spin on crudité, an hors d’oeuvre that typically consists of raw or slightly blanched vegetables served alongside a dipping sauce. Rather than displaying the vegetables on a serving tray next to a bowl of dip, Taylor hollows out individual baguettes, fills them with dip and tops them with carrots or red peppers, which makes the item more personal for guests. Hors d’oeuvres are usually served on tables or on large platters carried by
servers, but Taylor suggests thinking outside the box when it comes to displaying appetizers. For a twist on grilled cheese and tomato soup, Taylor will place the soup in a shot glass and place the grilled cheese, which he cuts into small triangles, on top of the glass. Taylor says this way guests can eat the bite of grilled cheese, then wash it down with the tomato soup. While some appetizers seem extravagant, couples on a budget can still take advantage of creative appetizers. Taylor recommends serving vegetable items or pastas, which are more affordable than meat or seafood. One of his affordable appetizer ideas includes placing Asian noodles in small oriental

boxes and serving them inside decorative bamboo boats. “You don’t have to serve things that are short ribs or meat items or seafood, which tend to be more expensive,” Taylor says. “You can do the recognizable and the approachable and the lowercosting items, but add a twist so it catches the person’s eye and makes them want to have that hors d’oeuvre.” jsw

akewood residents Mike and Jen Shafarenko knew they wanted their ceremony and reception to showcase Cleveland when they began planning their Aug. 31, 2013 wedding.
“We wanted to have it in a space that really told the history of Cleveland but also projected its future,” Mike says. “That’s sort of representative of a wedding. You have somewhat of a history together, but are really getting married to have a future together.” After visiting different spots in downtown Cleveland, the couple chose the 5th Street Arcades for both their ceremony and reception. Mike and Jen wanted to highlight the architecture of the arcade – a Cleveland landmark more than 100 years old – while adding unique décor elements to reflect their personalities. Transforming a highly recognizable venue into a unique reception space is no easy task, so the couple recruited the help of Danielle DeBoe Harper, owner of DeBoe Studio, a décor and planning company in Cleveland that specializes in weddings and events. After scouring the Internet and the Cleveland Public Library

for historical photos as well as creating a scrapbook of inspirations on Pinterest, Mike and Jen went to Harper with a design concept in mind. Harper says she helped the couple evolve their concept by adding “a little more punch of color and a little more whimsy.” “We walked through the venue to find ways to not impinge on the architectural significance of the venue, because there was so much virtue in it already. Instead, we wanted to bring it alive and give it a more festive sort of feel,” Harper says. Jen and Mike, 34 and 30 years old, respectively, took a novel approach to refreshing the venue, decorating the space with large-scale balloons and streamers in bright blues, yellows and pinks. Colorful parasols were hung upside down from the ceiling to surprise guests entering the reception space. Vintage props and furniture completed the design. “One of the most important aspects for them was the

guest experience,” Harper says. “They wanted their guests to have a fun time. They wanted this wedding to be something that was memorable, not just for them, but for their guests.” To reflect Mike’s roots, and add to the festive feel of the reception, Mike and his guests performed the Hora, a group dance that’s common at Jewish weddings. “While the majority of our wedding did not subscribe to many traditional elements, the Hora was one we wanted to incorporate because it’s so much fun, inclusive and joyous,” Mike says. “It brought all the attendees of the wedding together on the dance floor to celebrate ‘us’ and, from my standpoint, felt like a fast-moving group hug.” Mike says the key to successfully transforming a space like the 5th Street Arcades is to keep the design authentic. “If you really want to make it authentic, and authentic to you as well, then you have to do the research across the board,” he says. “Think about what currently inspires you, like fashion trends or styles, but also be mindful of the aesthetic of what the venue
was like in the past as well.” Harper says she often tells couples to begin the planning process by narrowing down design possibilities. “We always say work big to small. Nailing down the venue first is essential. Then find out whatever décor restrictions exist at the venue, because every venue has some,” she says. Mike says choosing a Cleveland landmark was a natural fit since he and Jen are invested in the city. By adding personal touches, they transformed the space to reflect their styles. “We love it here and we just wanted to really show all of our guests that we are a part of Cleveland and Cleveland is a part of us,” he says. jsw

Pieter Bouterse, owner of Pieter Bouterse Studio in Warrensville Heights, recommends using radiant orchid as an accent. “Colors (trends) change from year to year. Emulate a classic style, and come up with an accent color to fit your wedding design.” Bouterse recommends turning to nature for complementary colors. Coral is a universally flattering shade of pink with orange and red undertones. Even though the color is more popular during the warmer months, darker shades of coral work well for winter and fall weddings. With a shade like coral, Arne Klein, a designer with Plantscaping in Cleveland, suggests using contrasting colors in the design scheme and to steer clear from adding white. W
edding invitations and save-the-dates aren’t what they used to be, according to two women in the know. Trendy is replacing traditional, clarity has supplanted fussiness, and typography and font choice are critical to the look and the vibe. So pay attention to detail, don’t clutter your joyous message and be bold and modern. That’s the bottom line, according to Julie Hill, a floor manager at Paper Trails, a specialty paper boutique in Rocky River, and Kellie Brubaker, owner and designer at Two Pooch Paperie in Lakewood. Here’s what Hill had to say about wedding stationery: “Wedding invitations are far different from the traditional, ivory-with-blackengraving styles that hail from decades ago,” she says. “The conventions of double envelopes and verbiage that is dictated by sometimes antiquated etiquette rules have been replaced by creative and colorful designs that are suited to the bride’s and groom’s unique styles. We see ‘trendy’ and ‘chic’ supplanting ‘classic’ and ‘traditional.’ This idea applies to typography and font as well, Hill says. “In the past, couples did not really have options in regard to ‘lettering.’ Now, with the advent of technology and graphic design, it’s easy (and fun) to select from hundreds of typestyles,” she says. “The font itself boldly conveys the tone and style of an entire event. Even the names of the fonts speak to the tone that the lettering

conveys. A fashion-forward or progressive-minded bride is more likely to choose fonts like ‘Amelie,’ ‘Gweet’ or ‘Market Deco’ than traditional fonts like ‘Majestic’ or ‘Elegance.’ The visual product or look of a wedding invitation is just as important as the event details conveyed therein.” Brubaker, who operates Two Pooch Paperie from her home, says typography “can definitely make or break a design. Choosing the right font makes a difference and paying attention to how it works with the layout help your design tell a story. The biggest mistake I see made is trying to use too many competing fonts on one design. I’m all about simplicity and try to use no more than two fonts per design, maybe three if needed. And I can spend hours trying to find the perfect fonts to work together!” Wedding invitations can really set the tone for the big day, Brubaker says. “A beautiful script font can give the feeling of an elegant or very romantic setting whereas a classic serif font can imply a more formal event,” she says. “And then there are invites that get more creative and use more modern and/or fun fonts, which definitely start to show the personality of the
bride and groom.” Brubaker cites Two Pooch Paperie’s Cleveland Skyline Invite: “The design is simple – the beautiful Cleveland skyline – but when you start changing the fonts and colors it can go from an elegant design to a very casual, fun design and reflect the mood the bride and groom want to set for their wedding day.” jsw

omance is naturally in the air on a bride’s wedding day, and from the flowers to the décor, there are several elements along the way to help heighten the mood. Perhaps an overlooked – yet important – aspect to establishing the desired ambience is lighting. Compelling lighting doesn’t only impress guests and show off a bride’s flair for the creative, it’s also functional. “Along with the décor, it’s one of the top priorities if you want to establish a theme or accent and draw focus to specific points of the reception,” says Beth Reyes,
co-owner of Solus Lighting in Cleveland. “It helps guide your guests, especially if your reception is in a tent.” Increasingly, brides-to-be and wedding planners are giving more priority to lighting arrangements, Reyes says. “Sometimes it can be a little bit of an afterthought, but it’s getting to be mainstream in popularity,” she says. “Brides are going to weddings, seeing what others are doing – pieces of other receptions or private parties – and then they come back to us to put all those pieces and parts together.” Up lighting has grown increasingly popular in recent

Wedding day video can capture moments and emotions in ways still pictures can’t By Michael C. Butz

aila Stein and Oliver Sax first got to know each other as high school students at Fuchs Mizrachi School, and romance started to blossom after they spent a summer working together as counselors at Camp Stone in Sugar Grove, Pa.
The couple got engaged in December 2012, and though they now live in New York City, they returned to Northeast Ohio on Aug. 25, 2013, to be married at the Cleveland Botanical Garden. Their wedding day was filled with love, laughter and even tears of joy. But as in any wedding, once the last dance is over and the lights go down on the reception, all of those emotions fade into cherished memories. To preserve those memories, wedding

photographers are a given, but some brides – including Stein – choose to add video to their big day. “I saw a lot of these trailers from my friends’ weddings,” says the 24-yearold Stein. “They posted them on social media and I just loved them, and I thought it would be such a great way to remember the day.” So, Stein arranged to have a wedding day trailer of her own filmed. “People kept telling me, ‘You’re going to want the
audio,’ ‘You’re not going to want just the pictures,’ ‘You’re going to want to get the speeches and the ceremony,’” she says. “My mom didn’t want the video, but I insisted.” Stein’s wedding trailer was filmed by Doug Kereszturi of Cleveland-based Cuff & Veil Wedding Films, who says two wedding day video trends are starting to emerge. The first is the first-look video. The second up-andcoming trend involves same-day edits. For those, Kereszturi and a second cinematographer capture footage throughout the day â&#x20AC;&#x201C; from bridal preparations all the way up to the first dance â&#x20AC;&#x201C; before handing it over to an on-site video editor to put together and set to a song. â&#x20AC;&#x153;The end result is three- to four-minute film thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s shown the same day, typically right before or right after dinner,â&#x20AC;? Kereszturi says. The advantage of a sameday edit over a more traditional wedding video is that it allows
everyone involved in the day to revisit the dayâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s special moment, says Kereszturi, explaining that otherwise a video might only be viewed by the bride and groom and perhaps close family. Africa in January 2012. The University Heights couple ventured to Botswana, Zambia and Cape Town, South Africa for their honeymoon in January 2012, and in the process, came face-to-face with “every animal imaginable,” Kerry says. Before they left, relatives and friends advised them to bring neutral-colored clothing and two suitcases, one with safari clothing and the other for when they touched down

in Cape Town, a more metropolitan area. Kerry says comfortable walking shoes, like her Hunter rain boots, were essential to bring on the trip. She also recommends a good digital camera, like Daryl’s Canon T2i, that they used to capture their brush with Africa’s wildlife. Upon recommendation from a family friend, the Kerteszes also brought books, since there was no Internet access during the safari. Other essentials the couple had were a prescription for malaria and bug repellent, like 3M Ultrathon Insect Repellent. Two items Kerry said she should have brought were insectrepellent clothing, like that made by ExOfficio, and night-vision binoculars to see animals better during nighttime excursions. The Kerteszes agree they would suggest an African safari honeymoon to fellow adventure seekers. “We figured that if we didn’t do it before having kids, it might be a long while before our kids would be old enough to appreciate something like that,” Daryl says. “We agreed that we could always do Europe or Hawaii, both of which are much easier logistically. You don’t have to get vaccine shots and take malaria pills to lay on a beach in Maui!” jsw

A PREMIER COSMETIC SURGERY PRACTICE Weddings & Class Reunions: What do they have in common? They are both big events that usually take place during the summer months and they both require significant advanced planning. For most, the biggest thing that is similar about these two occasions is the universal desire to look good at them. Weddings are probably the single most photographed events for families, creating pictures that are cherished and viewed for decades afterward. Reunions, be it high school or college, prompt a longing in most people to look attractive and successful. We all want to show how well we’ve turned out!! There is nothing more frustrating than spending a ton of time toning up, dieting and picking out “THE perfect outfit” for these affairs, only to look in the mirror a few weeks before looking tired and (in your mind) old. The wrinkles, eye bags, love handles, etc. that you meant to do something about, are still there. Now is the time to consider how you want to look for these events and in photographs that people will look at well into the future. If you’re considering a face or neck lift, tummy tuck or breast lift, you will need to provide adequate time for recovery, at least six weeks. Other procedures, such as liposuction, laser treatment of fine lines, or eyelid surgery, won’t need as long a recovery time. An often over-looked issue when planning a cosmetic procedure is the time that it takes to get an appointment with a preferred surgeon for a consultation (possibly two) and then for the surgical procedure. Just because you’re ready to have something done doesn’t mean that there will openings in a surgeon’s schedule immediately. As a general rule, a well-respected, experienced surgeon is a busy one and will have their calendar filled many weeks to months in advance. There are occasionally cancellations that can be filled but it’s always better to be safe than sorry and plan ahead!
