There will be a “Moment of Silence at 3:30p.m. (PST). Across the country; family, loved ones and friends will reflect on the life of Stanton Derrick Wimberly.
Stanton Derrick Wimberly, Jr. was born on February 28, 1951 in Chicago, Illinois to the proud parents Stanton Derrick Wimberly Sr. and Juanita Wimberly. Stanton was affectionately called Derrick or “Shaft” by his family and friends. During Derrick’s formative year he attended school in Evanston, Illinois. He was graduated from Foster Elementary School and attended Evanston Township High School. When Derrick was 18 years old he joined the United States Air Force. After proudly serving for two years, Derrick was honorably discharged. As an adult, Derrick became a technical engineer. He received a certificate from De Vry University, in Evanston Illinois. Derrick’s first position in his field was with Canon Copy Machine Corporation in Atlanta, Georgia. Canon transferred him to Fort Wayne, Indiana. Later, Derrick held the position of technical engineer at Polo Towers, Las Vegas, Nevada until his health began to decline in 2003. Derrick met the love of his life Diane, “Lady Di”, in 1981. After six months of dating, Derrick came to Diane’s home in Atlanta, Georgia and in true Hollywood fashion he “yelled” in Diane’s bedroom window and exclaimed to the world “God said, you are going to be my wife” and the rest is history..... Derrick and Diane renewed their wedding vows in Las Vegas, Nevada on July 26, 2010. Derrick’s daughters, the Wimberly “Girls” were his pride and joy. Derrick wanted only the best for his girls. He strived to instill in his girls that an education was the key to a long and successful life. Derrick believed that with an education his girls could do “anything!” Derrick did not meet any strangers. Once you met Derrick you would never forget his sense of humor or his lovely smile. He was always willing to assist with inside and outside home repairs. He could take apart and put back together any make and model of any automobile on the road. In his leisure time, Derrick enjoyed a good game of dominoes. He played all card games from bid whist to poker with his relatives and friends. Derrick worked hard and enjoyed life.
In 2003, Derrick was diagnosed with lung cancer. The doctors gave Derrick 2 to 6 months to live. But, God in his glory saw fit to let Derrick live seven years after his diagnosis. Derrick suffered a long illness. Stanton Derrick Wimberly was called home to heaven on Thursday, August 19, 2010, at Dessert Springs Hospital. Derrick was a dedicated husband, father and grandfather. He leaves to cherish his memory his wife, Diane; five children; Daunessa Chenelle Poindexter of Springfield, IL; Joy Nechele Perry-Wimberly Diana Renee’ Wimberly, Shamone Patrice Wimberly and Jamila Fanchone Wimberly of Las Vagas NV; four grandchildren; Jalen Nashun Perry, of Las Vegas, NV; Eugene Shamont Phillips, De’ Najah Chenelle Phillips and Gemeel Lavarion Johnson of Springfield, IL; four sisters: Sandra Wright of Hudson, FL, Karen Wimberly and Evelyn Wimberly of Evanston, IL, and Debret Harrison of Seattle, WA; two brothers, Craig Wimberly of Chicago, IL, and Michael Harrison of Evanston, IL; one aunt Evelyn Alexander of North Chicago, IL and one uncle Milton Harrison of Evanston, IL and a host of cousins, nieces, nephews and friends. Prov. 3:18 She shall give to thine head an ornament of grace: A crown of glory shall she deliver to thee. You were my “go to” guy for home repairs, car repairs, and many home improvement projects. You were very good at what you did. Few know that you were a self-taught painter, plumber, electrician, carpenter, and mechanic. Thank you, Derrick, for the support and friendship you showed me. - Debbie Bell My oldest brother, Derrick Stanton Wimberly, as I look back on our lives; I thought about Aunt Barbara naming you Shaft. Then I thought about what you and I went through together. The talks, the laughter, the good times and the bad. You EARNED that name Shaft. I love you and you will truly be missed. - Your Sis, Evelyn
You will always be my big brother. Love and much respect, - Your Middle Brother, Craig
When I must leave you for a little while, please do not grieve and shed wild tears and hug your sorrow to you through the years, but start out bravely with a gallant smile; and for my sake and in my name, live on and do all things the same. Feed not your loneliness on empty days, but fill each waking hour in useful ways. Reach out your hand in comfort and in cheer and I in turn will comfort you and hold you near, and never, never be afraid to die, for I am waiting for you in the sky!
We extend our appreciation and gratitude to everyone for all your love, support and the many acts of kindness given to us during Derrick’s long illness. Most of all we thank God for your prayers during our bereavement. The Wimberly Family
