YMCA Summer Day Camps Adventure Days 3 - 5 yrs

Camp is based around a weekly theme featuring small group activities, circle time, story time, crafts, quiet time and swimming. We will keep your preschooler active by providing structured time and free play time in our indoor room and outdoor green space. Campers will be organized in age appropriate groups wherever possible. We will engage your preschooler in a variety of activities that will allow them to explore their creativity, build friendships and develop skills such as sharing, cooperative play and communication. Discovery Days 6 - 8 yrs

(Entering Grade 1 in Sept. 2012)

Now offering weekly streams for Discovery Days! Whether your child prefers to kick a soccer ball in the active stream, perform on stage with the creative stream or get hands on with experiments in the explore stream, each stream will put your child’s interests first and help to enhance their day camp experience. All campers will participate in the traditional camp activities they know and love such as daily swimming, large group challenges, outdoor activities and water games in addition to their unique stream activities. Daily programming will focus on making new friends, team work and skill development. Field Trip on Wednesday afternoons for Discovery Days Campers from both YMCA locations.

Stream Descriptions- Campers will select their preferred stream on the first day of the camp week. So You Think You Can Dance? Put on your dancing shoes and move to the beat! This week campers will learn new moves and get to try out a variety of different styles and types of dance while working towards a performance at the end of the week. Week offered: July 2–6 World Cup 2012: Campers have the opportunity to learn the game of soccer and good sportsmanship while working as part of a team. Children of all skill levels will work on drills while playing in a mini soccer tournament over the week. Weeks offered: July 2–6, July 30–Aug. 3 Game Show Mania: Gear up to face off with extreme challenges from your favourite TV game shows such as Minute to Win It, Fear Factor, Survivor, Amazing Race and much more! Week offered: July 9–13 Youth Fit: Welcome to an active fitness week! Campers will develop their agility, speed and coordination through exciting games and activities. We will use fitness equipment such as agility ladders and resistant bands and take part in fitness classes such as Zumba, Boot Camp and Yoga. Weeks offered: July 9–13, Aug. 7–10 Discovery Days Got Talent: Whether you can act, sing, dance or more, we want you at camp! Campers will work together to produce a show and demonstrate their talents at the end-of-week. Week offered: July 16–20 Hoops: Campers learn, practice and play basketball with a focus on healthy competition, fair play and the benefits of teamwork. All skill levels will have fun while being challenged to achieve personal skill development through drills and games. Weeks offered: July 16–20, Aug. 13–17 Pop, Boom, Fizz: Unleash the power of science with imaginative learning and explosive projects that challenge and inspire. Campers will take part in hands-on experiments over the week. Week offered: July 23-27 Olympics: Go for the gold as you participate in traditional Olympic team events and a few unusual competitions unique to day camp. Weeks offered: July 23–27, Aug. 20–24 Young Oscar Winners: Get ready to shine! This camp will focus on a one-act play, presented at the end of the week. Campers will learn some acting, directing and set/costume design skills. Week offered: July 30–Aug. 3 Jr. CSI: Investigate, decode and solve. Campers will learn about DNA, finger printing and use their finely-tuned analysis skills to solve the Y mystery of the week. Week offered: Aug. 7–10 Artful Antics: Art has never been so fun! Be prepared to get messy and create larger-than-life works of art using a variety of materials and styles such as painting, stencils, sculpting and more. Camp Heidelberg 9 - 12 yrs

Join us for an exciting day camp experience for the older camper at Camp Heidelberg! Explore the outdoors with safe and fun activities in our large open field space, pavilion and forest area. Campers can choose the stream that suits their interests and skills each week, while also participating in traditional camp games, archery and challenges that makes Camp Heidelberg so popular. Thursday night campers are invited to a family campfire and then an optional sleepover. Detailed forms and further information about the sleepover will be provided by counsellors during the week. Campers will be dropped off at the YMCA where they register (A.R. Kaufman Family or Stork Family YMCA) and will be bussed to Camp Heidelberg in the morning. Campers will be bussed back for a 3:00 – 4:00 pm swim and pick up at their home YMCA.

Leaders In Action 12 - 16 yrs

The focus of the LIA program is to help teens build confidence and self-esteem, while developing skills required of a leader within the YMCA and our community. LIA Level 1- Camp Heidelberg Participants will be introduced to the YMCA’s history and values. Activities will focus on leadership techniques and problem-solving skills. Activities are meant to transition LIA Level 1 participants from campers to leaders. This session activities will focus on conflict resolution, communication styles, working with children, building relationships and program safety. LIA Level 1 will feature an overnight sleepover at Camp Heidelberg for one night during the week. Campers will be dropped off at either the A.R. Kaufman or Stork YMCA and be bussed to Camp Heidelberg. Campers will return to their home YMCA for a 3:00 – 4:00 pm swim. LIA Level 2- A.R. Kaufman Family YMCA or Stork Family YMCA Must complete LIA Level 1 before participating in LIA Level 2. Participants will continue building on the lessons learned in LIA level 1 and develop skills that will help prepare them for future employment/volunteering in YMCA day camps. This session will focus more on planning full programs and facilitating camp wide activities for day campers as well as learning first aid skills. Participants will learn how to deliver age appropriate activities, while studying the principles of healthy child development, group dynamics and understanding behaviours. The week will feature volunteering in day camps at their home YMCA, planning and implementing the programs they have created. Self, peer and counselor evaluations will help to provide feedback for participants leadership skills. LIA Level 2 will also feature a team building offsite trip during the week. Site

Volunteers in Action 12 - 16 yrs

This program is the final stage of our LIA program. Participants who have successfully completed their LIA Level 1 and LIA Level 2 sessions will have an opportunity to put their new skills and knowledge into practice. Participants will be paired with a counsellor for the duration of the week. Participants will assist in program planning and facilitation of activities. Feedback from both a self-evaluation and counsellor evaluation will help to identify strengths and areas for continued development. Becoming a Volunteer in Action is a great way for youth to accumulate community service hours for high schools, add valuable experience to their resumes and jump start future volunteering opportunities at their YMCA. ARK Specialty Camps- Kitchener ON

Pick up and drop off occurs at the A.R. Kaufman Family YMCA, 333 Carwood Ave., Kitchener. Campers will travel by bus to the off site specialty camp locations. Campers spend the morning and lunch time at the specialty camp location followed by an afternoon of traditional camp activities, including games, crafts and swimming at the YMCA. On-site specialty camps remain at the YMCA, spending the morning in specialty program and the afternoon in traditional camp activities, including games, crafts and swimming.

Jr. Lifeguard Camp 8 - 12 yrs

More action, more fun! Experience the skills & some of the thrills! Complete fitness drills, learn lifesaving skills, and aim for personal bests. Experience some daily lifeguarding routines such as: wearing a uniform, communication, blowing a whistle, hand signals, shadow guarding, making your own first aid kit, and taking a pool test. Participate in visits by our local EMS -the Paramedics, Fire Department and Police Services. Campers spend the full day in program with a certified Instructor Lifeguard on-site at the YMCA and have the opportunity to earn their Basic or Emergency First Aid Certifications as well as CPR.

Computer Fun 5 - 8 yrs

With emphasis on art and music, this camp provides an opportunity for children to explore their creative side. Each child will work on a personal laptop (supplied by Kids Computer Fun) to create simple animation and art projects, plus compose their own music. Each camper will receive a CD with their artwork and music compositions as well as a T-shirt with their own design. This camp is facilitated by Rasha Hasanen of Kids Computer Fun. Campers will spend the morning in the specialty program on site at ARK and the afternoon participating in traditional camp games, activities and swimming at the YMCA. Dates

LEGO Computer Camp 7 - 11 yrs

In this camp, campers will build LEGO ® models of machines and animals using special LEGO ® bricks. These models will be attached to sensors and motors that are connected to computers. Through the use of a simple LEGO ® software program, the campers will program their models to move and respond to commands. This camp is facilitated by Rasha Hasanen of Kids Computer Fun. Campers spend the morning specialty program on site at ARK and the afternoon participating in traditional camp activities, including games, crafts and swimming at the YMCA. Dates

It’s true, anyone can learn to draw! This drawing program is fun and will take campers step by step through the skills needed to become an excellent illustrator. Art lessons the fun way! Did you like anyone can draw camp? We’re taking it to the next level. Flip Book Animation Boot Camp allows you to become the animator. Design your own comic and watch it come to life. Let your child explore their inner artist this summer! Art camp will be facilitated by Karen Ellis at The Art House Studio. The camp will introduce campers to the work of a variety of artists and then allow everyone to create their own masterpieces inspired by the artist’s work. Painting, printmaking and mixed media art are just some of the mediums that will be exploring throughout the week. Campers travel by bus to spend the morning in specialty program off site at The Art House Studio followed by an afternoon of traditional camp activities, including games, crafts and swimming back at the YMCA.

Video Game Design Camp 8 - 12 yrs

Learn how to make your own Real Working Video games from start to finish. In this one week camp, campers will learn how to create up to 4 different video games from scratch, which they will be able to take home and play with friends and family. The campers will also learn basic computer programming skills while sharing a computer with a partner for the week. Campers will spend the morning in specialty program on site at ARK followed by an afternoon of traditional camp activities, including games, crafts and swimming at the YMCA. Dates

Is your child looking for a different kind of sport? Why not try our archery camp. Children will learn the basic technique of archery, different types of archery equipment, how to score their arrows and a whole lot more! Children will be bussed from the A.R. Kaufman YMCA to The Bow Shop in Waterloo and will learn from a certified archery instructor. Campers travel by bus to spend the morning in specialty program on-site followed by an afternoon of traditional camp activities, including games, crafts and swimming at the YMCA. Dates

Looking for a new sport to try? Then golf camp is for you! This camp will focus on your child’s short game early in the week, developing putting, chipping and pitching skills. Later in the week the group will move into Full Swing Fundamentals and playing golf on the golf course as a group. The camp will be run by GolfNorth golf professionals. Campers will be bussed to Dundee Country Club. Campers travel by bus to spend the morning in the specialty program followed by an afternoon of traditional camp activities, including games, crafts and swimming back at the YMCA. Dates

As part of the Eco-Explorer camp, campers will explore the propNon-Member $200/week erty at the Laurel Creek Nature Centre through active, hands-on exploration activities. Campers will also learn about endangered species, the green roof, and some ways to survive in the wild through activities facilitated by Nature Centre staff. Campers travel by bus to spend the morning off site at Laurel Creek Nature Centre followed by an afternoon of traditional camp activities, including games, crafts and swimming at the YMCA.

Golf Camp 8 - 12 yrs

Looking for a new sport to try? Then golf camp is for you! This Fee Member $184/week  camp will focus on your child’s short game early in the week, Non-Member $200/week developing putting, chipping and pitching skills. In the later in the week the group will move into the Full Swing Fundamentals and playing golf on the golf course as a group. The camp will be run by GolfNorth golf professionals. Campers will be bussed to Foxwood Golf Course. Campers travel by bus to spend the morning in the specialty program followed by an afternoon of traditional camp activities, including games, crafts and swimming at the YMCA. 18


Horse Camp 8 - 12 yrs

Build skills and gain confidence through horseback riding! Campers rotate through three-45-minute sessions at Windamere Equestrian Centre with qualified and experienced staff and horses. Session one is horse back riding where children receive individual attention aimed at their personal ability level; session two is horse theory and barn chores; session three will feature horse related games and crafts. Campers travel by bus to spend the morning off site at the specialty program, followed by an afternoon of traditional camp activities, including games, crafts and swimming back at the YMCA. * Riders MUST wear boots or shoes with a heel (between 1” and 1 1/2” heel), long pants and bring a bicycle helmet.

Day Camp Information For years, YMCA Day Camps have been a trustworthy and dependable choice. Months before the summer begins, full-time YMCA staff are involved with program development, site selection, hiring and training summer staff, all to achieve one goal: to provide a quality day camp experience where your children will create wonderful memories, develop new relationships, learn new skills and enjoy fun-filled days in a safe, exciting and stimulating environment.

Health & Safety

Like parents, the health and safety of day campers is our foremost concern. Our Supervisor, Day Camp and Leadership Programs is a full-time, year round supervisor with our Health, Fitness and Recreation department. Site coordinators support our counsellors at each of our sites and all staff are trained in emergency and supervisory procedures. Our lifeguards, who are certified by the National Lifesaving Society, supervise all aquatic activities. Staff to child ratios are as follows: Adventure Days 3 – 5 yrs - 1:8 Discovery Days 6 – 8 yrs - 1:12 Camp Heidelberg 9–12 yrs- 1:12 Leadership Development 12 – 16 yrs - 1:16 (Please note, we often also have volunteers and leaders working in our camps.)


Hours of Operation

Day Camp programs run 8:00 am – 5:00 pm Drop off occurs between 8:00 am – 9:00 am  Pick up occurs between 4:15 pm – 5:00 pm Children must be signed in/out by an adult 16 years or older every day.

Extended Care

The YMCA understands how busy family life can be, so we have created extended care to complement busy schedules. Extended care is available from 7:30 am – 8:00 am and 5:00 pm – 5:30 pm for of $7.50 per AM or PM extended care/child/week. The extended care option needs to be selected at time of registration. Note: Late fee is $1.00/minute/child.

Camp Fees

Camp fees are listed with each camp program.  Camp fees must be paid in full by June 1, 2012.  A non-refundable deposit of $50.00 per week is required at time of registration. Post-dated cheques must be submitted with deposit, or if paying balance by credit card, you must indicate the date for your credit card to be debited. Week 6 – Camp is closed Mon. Aug. 6  Fees are pro-rated.

Refunds and Cancellations

Deposits are non-refundable. Camp fees are nonrefundable after June 15, 2012, except for medical reasons (a doctor’s note will be required). When a request for a refund is made before June 15, 2012, the refund will be issued in the form of a credit note (minus the deposit), or a refund, less deposit and 15% administrative fee.

Please note that refunds take 3-4 weeks to process.

Fee Assistance

The Kitchener-Waterloo YMCA believes that every child should have the opportunity to attend camp and we work hard to make it affordable for all families. For an application for assistance drop by the Member Services desk at either facility. Financial assistance is limited in order to offer opportunities to a larger number of campers. Subsidy restrictions exist based on session availability so please apply early.
