The Clackamas Print Editor Application for Fall 2013

Due Friday, March 12, 2014 Please type and email your application to Patty Salazar chiefed@clackamas.edu and advisor Elizabeth.slovic@clackamas.edu Positions News Editor - As news editor your job is to manage the news section and report on the news of the campus. The news editor assigns the stories for his or her section weekly and makes sure that writers for the news section have all the information and resources that they need for their stories. The news editor reads all pieces for his/her section, working with writers before sending their stories to the copy editor. It is highly encouraged that the news and associate news editor regularly attend open college meetings. The news editor may also be required to participate in organizing, planning and researching editorial pieces.

Arts & Culture Editor - As the A&C editor, your job is to manage the Arts & Culture section and report on events that happen around campus as well as organize feature pieces. The A&C editor assigns the stories for his or her section weekly and makes sure that A&C writers have all the information and resources that they need for their stories. The A&C editor reads all pieces for his/her section, working with writers before sending their work to the copy editor.

Sports Editor - The sports editor manages the sports section and reports on sporting matches, events and any other news coming from the athletic department. Stories must be assigned weekly and the editor must give the writer all resources and contact information they need. The sports editor reads all pieces for his/her section, working with writers before sending their stories to the copy editor. The sports editor is encouraged to attend games and practices to establish a relationship with the athletic department.

Associate Editor * - An associate section editor will have the same duties as the section editor they are assigned to, under the discretion of the section editor and editor-in-chief. If the section editor is absent, the associate will take his or her place that day and make sure that the job is done. Not all sections will have an associate and

associates may not receive a tuition waiver. Positions that may have an associate: News, A&C, Sports, Copy, Photo.

Copy Editor – The copy editor edits all of the articles for upcoming issue and prepares them for production before Tuesday. During the week, he or she records what stories are going in each section for a particular issue and tracks writers’ progress. The copy editor should be prepared for work during the weekends.

Photo Editor – The photo editor is in charge of maintaining all camera equipment and photo assignments. As story assignments are being made, the photo editor will assign photographers to assignments based on location and the number of assignments they currently have. The photo editor will keep a close eye on who is checking out equipment, when it is returned and making sure that batteries are charged in cameras. During the first week he or she will take staff photos for all the publication staff for use with press passes, column mug shots, etc. The editor will also be in charge of preparing all photos for production and at least occasionally for the web (i.e. photo essays, slideshows).

Ad Manager – The ad manager is charged with securing advertisements for the paper. He or she is tasked with preparing and/or making the ads for production, tracking billing information and communicating with the department secretary regarding billing. Additionally the ad manager is responsible for spearheading the initiative for advertising The Print to the school and community to gain readership and spread awareness about the paper.

Design Editor* – The design editor will be in charge of designing the templates for each production day on Tuesday as well as helping each page. The design editor will also be in charge of designing the front page. It is highly recommended that the design editor be adept at Adobe InDesign and Photoshop CS5.

Web Editor – The web editor duties will be to edit, format and upload web content including articles, photos, slideshows and potentially other forms of multimedia (at the editor-in-chief’s discretion). Also, it may be part of his or her responsibility to help maintain The Print’s social networking sites. It is highly recommended that the web editor be adept at Adobe Photoshop CS5 and has at least a basic understanding of HTML and CSS. * Due to limited number of full tuition waivers, some of these positions will not come with a tuition wavier, or they may come with a half tuition waver (7 credits.)

To be an editor: • • •

You must enroll in J-215 (Publications Lab) AND J-226 (Production.)

You must maintain a 2.0 term and cumulative GPA. You must be available for editors meetings before and/or after class; keep this in mind as you plan on your spring schedule.
