35th Annual Portland International Film Festival brings unique films to viewers

People briskly walk into the Newmark Theatre in Portland.

“Thankfully we don’t have to wait,” one man said to his companion as they picked up their advance tickets during the first week of the festival.

Outside of the theater, people waited anxiously in the rain to buy tickets at the door for the opening night of the annual Portland International Film Festival (PIFF), alas they waited in vain, only to be sent away after an hour wait. The PIFF began with a showing of Great Britain’s “Salmon Fishing in the Yemen,” starring Ewan McGregor, followed by an after party with complimentary drinks and refreshments.

The PIFF has been a Portland tradition for 35 years, hosted by the NW Film Center, a non-profit organization that is celebrating its fortieth anniversary this year.

The NW Film Center is located within the Portland Art Museum but is operated separately.

It’s T-minus six days until spring term registration is open for returning students at Clackamas Community College. Online catalogue for new students registration will open on March 6.

Although some students might think that waiting until midnight to register will get them a step ahead others, that might not be so ideal.

The server could crash when trying to register right after registration becomes open.

However, according to Tara Sprehe, director of enrollment management and registrar, “Online reg-

istration is open earlier than inperson and students can wait in long lines due to instructor consent needed for wait listed courses.”

Sprehe has some advice for students.

“We would advise students that if they know classes fill up quickly, register early. However, if they don’t, please don’t try to register right at midnight on the first day of registration. The load on the system can make it slow. New students should make sure they have taken their placement tests, met with an adviser and completed all financial aid paperwork.”

Some other helpful hints: know what courses you need for your major and don’t overload on classes that later on you could possibly drop.

Black History Month Muhammad Ali the self-proclaimed: “greatest [boxer] of all time” was originally named after his father, who was named after the 19th century abolitionist and politician Cassius Marcellus Clay.

Martin Luther King Jr: born Jan. 15, 1929, Atlanta, Ga., U.S.—died April 4, 1968, Memphis, Tenn.) Baptist minister and social activist who led the civil rights movement in the United States from the mid-1950s until his death by assassination in 1968.

In Montgomery, Ala., on December 1, 1955, Rosa Parks made history by being the black woman who refused to obey the driver of the bus when he gave her the order to give up her seat on the city bus to make room for a white passenger. Her actions sparked the Montgomery Bus Boycott, and made history. Her refusal became a key part of the modern movement for civil rights, and her actions sparked further action and set an example.

The Little Rock Nine was a group of African-American students who were enrolled in Little Rock Central High School in 1957. The ensuing Little Rock Crisis, in which the students were initially prevented from entering the racially segregated school

by Arkansas Governor Orval Faubus, and then attended after the intervention of President Eisenhower, is considered to be one of the most important events in the African-American Civil Rights Movement. On their first day of school, troops from the Arkansas National Guard would not let them enter the school and they were followed by mobs making threats to lynch.

Former Marine joins Army Strong on campus

By Nora Goodman The Clackamas Print Upon recognition of Black History Month what a better way to celebrate then to honor one African American trying to make a difference on campus.

Napoleon Hodges, former Marine, is the new face to Army Strong on Clackamas Community College. On Dec. 6, Hodges came on staff as a contracted Customer Service Support Coordinator of Army Strong to take the place of Paul Teters who will be deployed to Afghanistan in April.

He previously worked at the Education and Training center located in DeJardin Hall at CCC. Hodges has a degree in BioMedical, a BA in Marketing and a MBA in Project Management and International Business. He is also a volunteer at the National Association for Black Veterans.

African American history is filled with inspiring people such as Dr. Carter G. Woodson and Rev. Jesse E. Moorland whom in 1915 co-founded the Association for the Study of Negro Life and History (ASNLH). Their goal was to bring awareness to the largely ignored, yet crucial role African Americans played in American and world history and to educate African American people about their cultural background and instill them with a sense of pride in their race.

tion to take my place when I am deployed to Afghanistan because of his knowledge in assisting vets, and he truly cares for people.

He is able to empathize and understand what the people need and is willing to go the extra mile.”

Barbara McCain is also a contracted Customer Service Support Coordinator of Army Strong who works with Hodges and said, “Hodges is highly educated and has served our country well. He is a wonderful example and role model for anyone, not just the Black community.” She said he has a huge heart and smiled widely when she proudly spoke about Hodges assisting 12 needy vet families during Christmas, providing them with food baskets and gifts.

Hodges, originally from Detroit, joined the Army National Guard at age 22. He later went into the Air Force for two years and then into the Marines where he eventually ranked as an E-5 Sergent. Hodges and his wife Bonita met in high school 38 years ago and have been married for 33 years. They have two daughters and one grandchild. He strongly emphasized that the military is hard on families, but he and his wife have been fortunate enough to never be separated from each other.

Hodges laughed and said “My wife has trained me well.”

Though he has landed the job Hodges work is not done. “I am not finished with my education yet. I plan to eventually get my doctorate,” said Hodges.

Foundation gives hope to inspiring minds

Karen Martini, director of the CCC Foundation works hard to build relationships to raise funds for the improvement of college programs and provide monies for student scholarships. Students recieve more than $600,000 annually in the form of scholarships.

Martini said that access is provided by the scholarships, textbook grants — the things that help a student be here and stay here. Then there’s help that provides for success from the funds that improve programs, facility enhancements, equipment purchases and upgrading technology.

These funds build a physical environment that is conducive to that success.

Foundation Scholarship application deadline is arriving soon. Students have until April 29 to return a completed application to the Financial Aid Office in Rook Hall. Applicants can download or fill out and print an application at clackamas.edu or pick one up in Rook Hall. There is also a link to a complete list of scholarships and the criteria needed to be considered for award. Students should review this list to be aware of what is expected from students for each scholarship. GPA, field of study, total credits per term and other factors vary depending on the scholarship.

A new possibility changes everything.

Many only require a 2.0 GPA and only six credits. The site also has links to many helpful tips and strategies to win scholarship and grant awards. The site will have a list of recipients available on June 30 who will be notified by mail. The funds will be disbursed fall term of the 2012-2013 school year.

Darcie Iven is a Financial Aid/ Scholarship Adviser with the college and works closely with students and the Foundation to coordinate the monies it provides.

“I work with the Foundation. They handle the donor end of it. They raise the money. I handle the student end, giving out the money,” she said.

Iven likes to help the students and make a difference in their lives. There is an advising session every Thursday evening 5 to 6 p.m. according to Iven, that helps students learn how to search for scholarships and what’s available. There is also

Pocket change is not what the Clackamas Community College Foundation awards to students and spends on the college every year. More than $600,000 is to be given away to students this fiscal year by the Foundation. These monies, in the form of scholarships and grants, are awarded yearly by the Foundation through their efforts in coordinating and managing several yearly scholarships and endowments that contribute money in perpetuity.

The Foundation also ensures that various college departments have funding to complete programs and projects or even upgrade equipment, called Funds for Excellence, which supplement the college’s regular sources of income. These funds amount to more than $500,000 each year to bring their contribution to education here well over $1 million through June 30.

The Foundation has a current endowment of more than $11 million that is invested and pays for a lot of what is happening at the college every year. Niemeyer Center would not have been finished if not for funds raised by the Foundation and its committee headed by the late Chuck Clemans, a long time Foundation Board member.

With spring term right around the corner, and the expense that comes with this hectic time, students might like to know what the Foundation does for them and the college. This money comes from donations by individuals, other foundations and even fundraisers that have included golf tournaments sponsored by the CCC Foundation. In our current economy, the CCC Foundation is a very important part of the college providing a great resource for students, according to Karen Martini, the Executive Director of the Foundation.

She explains the purpose and mission that drives these awards.

“Our mission is to raise friends and funds for Clackamas Community College.

Everything is college-centered. Everything we do is driven by the college mission,” said Martini. “The two pieces that categorize us most would be student access and student success. We really try to help create a place that will give them everything they need to move on and be successful.”

My job is increasing the number of students who apply. There’s no reason a student shouldn’t apply.”

Martini also said the CCC Foundation is one of the more successful community college foundations in the state and is proud that 80 percent of the full time employees who contribute to the Foundation.

“We have the best staff giving record in the state,” she said, “People look to us for a model.”

Matthew LaForce, Chair of the Engineering and Sciences Department, is excited about the staff donations to the Foundation. “It’s a huge thing that people don’t know that the faculty here donates more than any other college in the state.”

E-books less green than paper

By Isaac Soper Arts & Culture Editor I’ve never wanted to smell an iPad or a Kindle.

I miss books, I honestly do. Being able to read something on a computer or e-reader is much faster and more accessible in most ways, but I miss the feel of paper. You don’t get that with the clicking of a plastic mouse, tapping your fingers on a plastic keyboard; I want something real. I miss the smell of a book. I really do, and I can’t ever imagine myself smelling a keyboard and having a nostalgic feeling, like “Ooh, that smells good.

I love the smell of plastic and aluminum.”

Whether a book is new or old, the pages have a very memorable smell. I can’t explain it, but I love that smell.

Though I do consider myself somewhat of an environmentalist, when I want to read a book, I want to hold it in my hands, turn the pages and read.

We can save the trees by recycling old newspapers, phonebooks and textbooks to make new books. What a novel idea (no pun intended, okay, mild pun intended). Some may argue that we are “saving” the rain forest by using electronic media opposed to printed materials.

I’m sure that the Earth isn’t too happy about the plastics and bauxite mines that we use to create e-book readers.

We make our iPads “green” by making them out of more aluminum than plastic. Where does that aluminum come from? We don’t find it lying around. I guarantee that iPads aren’t made out of [expletive deleted] recycled pop cans. I mean, sure we’ll save all of those trees, the ones that aren’t blown off the face of the Earth

Wait, you say, we can make plastic out of other materials, like food!

Now why would we use food to make something that isn’t edible? Because we are idiots who use food to create pseudo-biodegradable plastic. Did you know that under “normal conditions” biodegradable plastics break down in about the same amount of time as paper? Let me remind you “normal conditions” means a constant temperature of about 250 degrees Fahrenheit, so normal conditions for, let’s say the dead of winter on the planet Venus.

Everything is getting more and more finely tuned to ease of access.

We rarely use libraries anymore, because we have to drive to the library.

We have to walk to the library. But our computer is in our backpack; our smartphone is in our hand. Our iPad is in our lap, propped up on its little protective screen cover that’s so damn cute.

There are certain things that no matter what medium they are printed on, they will not be read by today’s society. Did you read the EndUser License Agreement when you installed Windows 7? Unless you’re a lawyer, no one is going out reading the Constitution. Good or bad, that’s for you to decide. The reason behind that is because it has no entertainment value. It’s the same reason no one reads the rules to Monopoly prior to playing or reading your syllabus for biology before coming to class. It is because in this day and age, we are addicted to the black-tar heroin that is instant gratification.

What brings more instant gratification, a book, or my Kindle Fire, with the Internet! Now that’s what I call a book! What if I told you that that same Kindle Fire is made out of food?

“I can’t eat it,” you say. “It’s too hot.”

Paper, I would like to introduce you to my good friend plastic, he is made out of food and oil, instead of trees, and we’ve got plenty of that.

Give me a book any day, if you hand me an iPad I’ll turn on the Geto Boys and go “Office Space” on it.

By Chris Taylor The Clackamas Print If only you could get experience in a working environment by simply being a creative writer for the school. Oh wait, you can. Say hello to your new Writer Laureate, Abby Johnson.

The Writer Laureate is a newly created position that the Clackamas Community College English department developed last term. The position requires you to promote upcoming events, write for special occasions (i.e. open mics) and participate in meetings.

The writer laureate also contributes to the Clackamas Literary Review and is president of the Writer’s Club on campus.

Johnson finds the work to be great experience for her future career. “I really like this job a lot. I like the office and love working with the faculty and staff.

The tuition waiver is a great plus.”

Johnson attends CCC through a program at Alliance Charter Academy that allows you to take classes at CCC while also going through high school. She is working on her high school diploma as

well as an Associates of General Studies or an AAOT. She hopes to transfer to OSU and major in English.

Geology instructor Sarah Hoover told Johnson of the new position, and she thought that it sounded interesting.

After the English department read the applications that were submitted they made their decision. On Dec. 5, four days after the applications were due; her hopes were answered. “I was very excited to hear that I got the job,” said Johnson. “To be the first one is kind of an honor.”

If anyone has earned the title of the writer laureate, Johnson certainly did. The application process included submitting a letter of recommendation from an instructor, a one-page letter describing their interest in writing and literature, their vision for the position and 10 - 15 work samples like poems or short stories. It was a pretty substantial process.

Indeed, attaining this position is an honor in itself that comes with responsibility. Johnson represents the English Dept., the Writer’s Club and CCC. Her writings can be seen in future English and creative writing events to come.

The Print asks: What classes do you wish were offered at CCC? “Two classes I wish were offered at CCC are a wedding planning course, because I want to be a wedding planner and horseback riding. I absolutely love horses.” — Nakkita Warrilow

“I wish CCC offered a budgeting and money management class. Too many college students get into debt early and have too much debt to handle once they get out of college.” — Nick Miller

Feeling parched? Don’t fret, there is a fully stocked open bar on every level of the theater and a couple hundred unpaid seat fillers —under orders to only speak when spoken to— who stand ready and waiting to keep your seat warm while you duck out during commercial breaks for a nip.

Definition: Small drink of something usually alcoholic.

The breakdown: the nominees, the performances, the honoring of those lost and then finally, the winners.

If you’re lucky, you walk away a winner, in possession of the man himself: Oscar.

Standing at 13 and a half inches and weighing eight and a half pounds, Oscar is cast from a pewter-like alloy, plated with 24-karat gold and stands upon a film reel with five spokes representing the five original branches of the Academy: actors, directors, producers, technicians and writers.

After four hours of ceremony, speeches, laughter, tears and paparazzi: it’s all about the after parties.

The planning for the notorious Governor’s Ball begins once the cleanup for the last one ends. A theme is chosen and meticulously planned, down to every last detail and whatever those details may encompass. Not only will you be complexly swept into whatever world an imaginative designer chooses, but Wolfgang Puck himself is the brainchild behind your exclusive, delectable, Oscar themed meal.

All in all, it’s not a bad night.

What began May 16, 1929 at the Roosevelt Hotel with only 270 in attendance has now evolved into an event that now has over 3000 attendees as well as being telecast around the world to forty million viewers. Sunday night, the American Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences for the eighty fourth time will induct a new group of stars into its exclusive club, granting them immortality in Hollywood history.

You never know, maybe even you can join that club someday.

It’s like prom night for celebrities: everyone’s hoping to get lucky.

Decked out in your finest, you arrive on Hollywood Boulevard at the Hollywood and Highland Center and roll to a stop in a high class limousine, flash bulbs popping and the crowd screaming. After presenting your invitation —something so exclusive that only a fraction of the Academy even receives one— you shuffle through so much security that even Tom Hanks couldn’t get past without a valid photo ID (true story, look it up).

Next comes the eternal red carpet, a Sid Grauman contribution to Hollywood’s history, in which you smile and wave for hundreds, thousands, millions of fans and cameras as well as being taken under deep scrutiny for your right or wrong choice of attire.

Interviews and posing ensue as you slowly make your way past the press and a set of bleachers holding somewhere around 500 lucky lottery winners (who after watching you strut your stuff, aren’t quite lucky enough to be invited inside — however they will head across the street to the El Capitan Theatre to watch the show on the big screen).

After passing through a larger than life arch, the grand staircase laden with royal red carpet lays before you with matching red curtains to either side doing their best to conceal a deep dark secret and maintain the elegance of such a prestigious event (psst, spoiler alert: you are in a mall; you’ll be lucky not to find a Pottery Barn behind one of those curtains). The stairs are wider and shorter in height than your average set, in accommodation of high heels and trailing dresses as you make your way toward an exclusive set of double doors into the five story, $94 million Kodak Theatre.

Many take this opportunity to visit the George Eastman VIP Room, and you might as well get in on the action. With its multifaceted glass, inside and out you are offered both exclusivity and a voyeuristic view of the elite as they sip cocktails, rub elbows with their peers and await the festivities while an Oscar sits on display just feet away.

Before long, it’s to your seat you go; nominees in the front row and lining the aisles, the Academy in the upper levels and everyone else filling in the blanks. Months of planning goes into this exact moment: rehearsals and contingency plans for every possible variable.

The amazing Billy Crystal opens the show (undoubtedly with a style that can’t be matched) and you are captivated as the show gets underway.

PIFF: Portland screens international films Continued from Page 1

“There used to be a theater company called Seven Gables Cinema,” said Jessica Lyness, PR and marketing manager for the NW Film Center. “For the first three years, the [NW] Film Center and Seven Gables worked on [the Portland International Film Festival] together; after that Seven Gables moved on to something else.”

After parting ways with Seven Gables Cinema, the NW Film Center took control of the PIFF completely and has been successful for over 30 years. Apart from the PIFF, the NW Film Center offers film classes to the public and holds a handful of other film festivals.

“In March, we’re showing a Nicolas Winding Refn series, he’s the director of ‘Drive,’ the recent film that came out with Ryan Gosling,” said Lyness.

This year the festival is 17 days in total, featuring 93 feature-length films, with six days featuring 46 short films, entitled “Short Cuts.”

Film screenings will be held at various venues all over the Portland area, including Regal Pioneer Place, Cinema 21, CineMagic, Newmark Theatre, Whitsell Auditorium, World Trade Center Theater, Lake Twin Cinema and Regal Lloyd Mall 8.

Viewers of the various films are asked to rate the films after each showing.

The films being shown in the festival are from

all over the world, many of which will only have one showing, though some films will have encore screenings.

The NW Film Center contains its own beautiful, single-screen theater within the Portland Art Museum, which is known as the Whitsell Auditorium. The auditorium is mainly used for festival screenings.

According to Joe Vonappen, a NW Film Center employee, the average attendance for the films at the Whitsell Auditorium has been approximately 250 out of 375 seats.

The NW Film Center is staffed by regular employees and volunteers during festival screenings. “It’s very easy to get involved. You just go online to the website and fill out the form there, which takes about two minutes,” said Don Bevington, a NW Film Center volunteer.

Bevington explained that volunteers are able to choose the films in which they volunteer, which is also handled through the Center’s website. He and his wife have been volunteering together throughout the festival.

The final weekend of the festival will have the most screenings throughout the day. The last day of the PIFF will be Saturday, Feb. 25. Showtimes and special events for the festival , along with ticket pricing may be found on www.nwfilm.org.

Cougars leave Saints without a prayer Clackamas hands Mt. Hood their worst loss in region play

For the road team, nothing is sweeter than the sound of a silent gym. That is unless the silence is interrupted by the bustling of hopeless fans heading for the exits, having given up any sliver of a chance that their team could pull out a miraculous victory.

Clackamas was greeted with plenty of both last Wednesday night, when they paid a visit to their southern region rivals in Gresham and dealt Mt. Hood Community College one of their most shocking losses of the season, winning 67-46 in a dominant, crowd-stifling performance.

The Saints of Mt. Hood were sitting atop the southern region standings coming in to the game, and had already delivered a defeat to Clackamas on Jan. 18 at home.

That loss came in heartbreaking fashion in front of a packed and energetic crowd, adding to the already tense atmosphere as Clackamas and Mt. Hood tipped off.

Things were close for the first several minutes. The teams traded buckets, neither ever getting a lead larger than five. After 12 minutes, both teams were knotted at 18 points each. Then Mt. Hood’s wheels came off.

Freshman wing Malcolm Jackson broke the tie with a three pointer and Clackamas never looked back. Behind a pair of steals and a free throw from sophomore Andre Dickson and five quick points from Taylor Dunn, the Cougars found themselves with a nine-point lead. That lead would be pushed to 16 before Mt. Hood would score again, finally hitting a lone free throw to end a seven and a half minute scoring drought. The Saints would tack on another field goal before the end of the half but the home team headed to the locker room with their tails between their legs, trailing 34-21 in a game they thought would come easily.

The crowd was given a glimmer of hope as the second half started, with Mt. Hood scoring the first three points and cutting the deficit to just 10. That was the last time that Mt. Hood showed any life. Clackamas reeled off seven quick points to push their lead to 17 and with less than six minutes

gone in the second half Clackamas was up by 20. Mt. Hood would cut the Cougar’s lead to 14 on one occasion, but eventually fell behind by 22, which was when the fans gave up and went packing.

What the fans missed was a classic finish to a rivalry game. Leading 64-46 with just 25 seconds remaining, freshman guard Riley Charlish was content to dribble out the clock behind the three-point line and end Mt. Hood’s night of misery with a little dignity. With only a few seconds left, the Clackamas bench stood and shouted for Charlish to shoot. Charlish let it fly and nailed a three pointer at the final buzzer, bringing cheers from his teammates and grumbles from the disgruntled Saints.

As the team mingled with friends and family after the game, Cougar assistant coach Paul Fiskum couldn’t contain his excitement at the dominant victory, smiling and walking over to get the opinion of press row.

“They take a lot of bad shots,” Fiskum said of Mt. Hood. “They’re a momentum driven team.”

Momentum was something that Clackamas never surrendered, holding Mt. Hood to an impressive 30.5 percent shooting from the field, a stat that Clackamas head coach Clif Wegner was quick to point out as a key.

“This is huge here,” said Wegner, pointing to the box score. “I thought a real key was our defensive activity. They shot 30 percent, and that’s great defensive percentage. They’re gonna win the league. They’re a good team. We held them to 30 percent and that was huge.”

By the time the game was over the stands were mostly empty except for a few diehard supporters. Even the Clackamas women’s team had already headed for the team van. Once the men had gone into the locker room to debrief, all that remained were a few parents, whose conversations were soon drowned out by the rhythmic clapping and banging coming from the team room.

“We were pounding on the table,” said Charlish. “We’re just excited we won.”

Stubborn style could slash success for women’s basketball

By John William Howard Sports Editor Basketball is a simple game, really.

All the dribbling, shooting and running aside, basketball is about fooling your opponent into going one way, when you’re really sprinting in the opposite direction. It’s about confusing the defense; chaos and out of that pandemonium, one team will score and the other will go home empty handed.

Basketball is also about keeping the defense on their toes. If something works, keep doing it but always try something new to keep them guessing.

Doing the same thing over and over again, no matter how high the level of proficiency, will eventually get you caught.

The Clackamas Community College women’s team was caught last Saturday

night falling to Lane in a game that exposed the weaknesses of a team that has been flying high all season. They lead the NWAACC in scoring, assists and steals. They lead the league in three pointers made and attempted.

They have one of the highest margins of victory in the league and have been blowing opponents out since day one.

At a glance, it would seem that the magic is working but when you look closer, there are a few teams that have obviously figured out how the trick works and plenty of others that have it figured out and how to counteract it.

The first loss of the season, a 72-53 blowout to Yakima Valley, was one of those instances. Yakima Valley had been watching Clackamas throughout the preseason crossover tournament, and quickly caught on to one of their biggest and most stubborn tendencies.

I’d feel bad about giving away head coach Jim Martineau’s secrets but they’re already out, so I think it’s okay.

Here’s the basic play: one of the Clackamas guards drives in from the right sideline, looking for a layup. If a lane opens up they take the shot. If not they take a flying leap under the basket

and kick the ball out to a shooter waiting on the three point line. In games against weaker opponents, this usually works.

Against Yakima Valley, however, the opponent smelled the pass coming.

They would give the Clackamas player the baseline and force the pass, but would jump into the passing lane and intercept the ball before it ever got to the hands of the shooter.

That’s one problem with that play.

The second is that it forces Clackamas to win or lose by how well they shoot the three point shot. When they’re playing free and loose, threes come easy. There is a menagerie of stellar shooters for Clackamas, but they can be streaky.

If the three point shot doesn’t fall, as in the home loss against Lane, all teams have to do is defend the low post because Clackamas refuses to shoot jump shots. It’s practically written in the team handbook as one of Martineau’s hard and fast rules. It’s his personal style.

“Our philosophy is to either shoot threes or layups,” said Martineau after Clackamas’ 21 point victory over SW

Oregon. “We’re not a fan of shooting 15 foot jump shots.”

The misconception is that the style works. Fed by success, the stubbornness grows so that even when a player has an open jumper from the free throw line, they’ll pass it up in favor of an ill-advised three pointer.

The flashy stats and the 20-4 overall record causes many, including the coaching staff, to overlook the gaping holes in the offensive scheme.

Clackamas may have only been bitten four times by their mistakes but poor shooting has been masked by pure talent and plenty of heart for some close victories that the Cougars didn’t really deserve because of how badly they played.

Don’t get me wrong, Martineau runs a great and successful program.

He’s a good coach and his teams have always done well, but he’s just as stubborn as the rest of us. The fast paced, threes-or-layups approach works wonders in the regular season but ruling out certain important facets of the game will always come back to bite in the end. It’s just a matter of time before the system breaks.

Clackamas falls from contention for southern championship Dazed, the group silently gathered their things, moving a few paces behind the bench to quietly dress and repack their bags. A few murmured words were said, and families quietly and cautiously approached, wary of the players they had come to see.

After a quick post game talk, head coach Jim Martineau disappeared, leaving the gym before most of his team, who, for the most part, meandered to talk to friends before bolting to their cars and heading home.

The Clackamas women had just lost to Lane in a tightly contested battle, fighting start to finish for a piece of the southern region crown. Clackamas fell 65-58, marking the first time that they had dropped a region game at home all season, and the first home loss since mid December. The home team repeatedly missed chances, shooting just over 50 percent from the free throw line, 16 percent from three point range and 28 percent from the field.

Freshman guard Jenny Johnson was one of the first to leave the disheartened group after having led Clackamas with 15 points in the loss.

“It’s frustrating because we work so hard in the whole game and we have the energy, but when it comes down to it we couldn’t make shots and that just sucks,” said Johnson, who was 0-2 from three point range but hit all of her team high seven free throw attempts. “You put in all that hard work and you don’t get the result you want.”

In the first half, the hard work was mostly paying off. Down eight at 14-6 after just five minutes of play, Clackamas went on a 13-5 run to tie the game at 19 before taking the lead on a field goal from 6-1 freshman Megan Feldman. From then on, neither team would take a lead larger than three, with the teams swapping the advantage five times in the final eight minutes.

the field and put up just 31 points. Sophomore MaKesha Bizon led the home team with eight points in the first half, which found Clackamas trailing by one going in to halftime.

Typically, when Clackamas has a bad offensive half, they come out for the final 20 minutes and turn it around completely. This time, however, that was not at all the case.

The second half began as close as the first half ended. Johnson tied the game with a three point play at 34, and kept things close a few moments later with a field goal to keep Clackamas within one at 39-38. Those would be the last points that Clackamas would score for almost four minutes, as they watched Lane go on an 11-2 run to take a ten point lead at 50-40.

Even then, the home team didn’t lie down. They went on a 14-5 run of their own to make it a game again, and despite shooting so poorly, Clackamas still had a chance to win the game. Down one after two Johnson free throws with just under five minutes remaining, the Cougars got a defensive stop and a steal, but couldn’t convert, missing a pair of free throws and three field goals while Lane pushed their lead back to seven.

With just two minutes left on the clock, the game was all but over for Clackamas. They didn’t hit a single field goal down the stretch, made two costly turnovers and normally composed wing Ashleigh Anderson missed a pair of free throws in the final minute before Clackamas finally laid down and surrendered.

Perhaps the most frustrating part of the loss is that it was close in spite of the Cougars’ dismal shooting percentage.

“We’re missing all of our shots and we only lost by seven points,” said Johnson. “That mean’s we’re with them and if we shoot well, we win by 10.”

The loss drops Clackamas to a second place tie in the southern region with Chemeketa. With only two games remaining, it is unlikely that Clackamas will be able to climb past Lane for the region championship and will have to fight to win the second seed in the south for the upcoming NWAACC championships.

Athletics Notebook

Men’s Basketball – Clackamas 84, Lane 71 Taylor Dunn hit four of six three pointers and had 24 points total in Clackamas’ win over Lane. The win clinched a playoff spot for the Cougars, who have now won seven of their last eight to move into sole possession of third place in the southern region standings.

Brett Ball added 20 points and 10 rebounds for another double-double, his tenth for the season.

Women’s Basketball – Clackamas 64, Mt. Hood 39 Freshman Ashleigh Anderson led the Clackamas blowout with 18 points in just 29 minutes of play for the Cougars, who stayed with Mt. Hood for the first few minutes before absolutely leaving them in the dust for the final three quarters of the game. Sophomore MaKesha Bizon added 14 for Clackamas and Sam McCloud and Jenny Johnson both chipped in 10 points. Clackamas won while shooting just 34.4 percent from the field overall, but held Mt. Hood to just 13 points in the second half.

Kanalz nearing return Saturday’s loss to Lane bore little good news, but it was the first time that many saw sophomore forward Lindsay Kanalz without her bright pink cast. Kanalz broke her hand during the game at home against Mt. Hood on Jan. 18, and is nearly ready to play, but will wait until the NWAACC tournament before stepping on the court again.

Track and Field – Sophomore thrower Kate Higgins recently signed with University of Wyoming to participate in track and field on a 75 percent scholarship.

Higgins earned AllAmerican honors at the 2011 NWAACC Track and Field championships, taking first place in both discuss and hammer throw.

Former Cougar Keisa Monterola is making national headlines at Eastern Washington University, and is now the fourth ranked pole-vaulter in the country at the NCAA Division-I level. Monterola was the 2011 NWAACC pole-vault champion.
