This year, courtesy of TrailLite Group, a brand new Benimar Tessoro 482 motorhome, valued at $218,000, will be going under the hammer at 12pm on Saturday 18th March in the outdoor food
court area. “This is always such a fun event; the auctioneer has been on The Block NZ and knows how to put on a good show,” says David.
LATEST AND GREATEST
The Covi SuperShow is a great way to see new innovations in the RV industry and poke your head inside some of the latest vehicles on the market. One design that’s sure to be turning heads is the Romotow concept mobile home from W2. Covi SuperShow attendees will be the first in the world to see this New Zealand-built and designed mobile home and can meet the W2 designers. The vehicle, which has been described as resembling a swivelling USB drive, is going into production shortly and David says it’s a Covi SuperShow must-see. “The Romotow is a truly revolutionary design, and some people are coming to the show especially to see it.”
SMALL WONDERS
It’s the little things that can really take your RV holidays to the next level and the Covi SuperShow is a great way to pick up accessories and little extras to make camping life easier. BOLT FROM THE BLUE
Think you know what Auckland has to offer? Think again. Emma Rawson reckons a visit to Tāmaki Makarau will spellbind you with its unexpected charms and hidden delights.
Let’s face it. When you’re thinking of idyllic camping destinations, Auckland might not be front of mind. But put any preconceived ideas about traffic jams and almond milk lattes to one side. With its gorgeous coastlines, 27 regional parks, multicultural community and thriving arts and food scene, Tāmaki Makarau is a holiday haven that deserves a second look. If you’re coming to the City of Sails to explore the Covi Motorhome Caravan and Outdoor SuperShow from March 17–19, most of the city is back to business as usual after the recent cyclone and flooding, although as with any trip it pays to check ahead. Auckland is a city that is best enjoyed when you explore the city’s roads less travelled − that will make all the difference.
TAKE A TIKI TOUR
Start your trip off the right way and sit back and enjoy the ride. It’s an obvious point but it needs to be said – it is best to avoid driving into Auckland during peak rush hour. Luckily there are lots of attractions on the outskirts and just beyond the city to make your journey more rewarding.
CHECK BEFORE YOU DRIVE
While most of the cyclone damage in Auckland has been cleared away, look online or call ahead to double check your destinations are open as usual.
Approaching Auckland from the south, take a detour to Miranda Hot Springs in Franklin, a classic Kiwi thermal pool built in 1959. Make a night of it (those staying at neighbouring Miranda Holiday Park get free entry to the thermal pools) and then drive along the Pōhutukawa Coast. Alternatively, take the turnoff in Mangatauwhiri to take Paparimu Road and Hunua Roads (check roads are clear after recent storm damage).
Another ritual for many Aucklanders on their way home from holiday is a pit stop into Pokeno to visit the Pokeno Ice Cream Shop. Rumoured to have the largest ice creams in New Zealand, in 2020 this beloved shop won an NZMCA Kiwi Summer Road Trip Award for Best Place to Stop Off for an Ice Cream in NZ. Miss Trumpet ice-cream herself, Rachel Hunter, has even stopped by the iconic shop. Another foodie detour is the Mercer Cheese shop, started in 1981 by Dutch immigrant turned local cheesemaking legend, Albert Alferink, whose goudas have won a slew of local and international food awards.
Those entering Auckland from the north can stop by Te Hāwere-a-Maki/ Goat Island, 27 minutes from the Warkworth turnoff for a sneaky snorkel in the marine
sanctuary, or mosey on down to Matakana for a taste of village life; see the giant bright pink snails at Sculptureum Matakana, and stop for a beer at the award-winning Sawmill Brewery. There are plenty of nearby holiday parks, including waterside Whangateau Holiday Park.
EAT YOUR WAY AROUND AUCKLAND
When it comes to food, Auckland raises the bar. Locals won’t be able to restrain themselves from recommending their favourite cafés and eateries to visitors, but there’s a good reason for this city’s food obsession. The city boasts a competitive and thriving food scene that ranges from artisan producers at markets like Takapuna Market on the North Shore, and

Camping in Vehicles Bylaw 2022 as freedom camping is not permitted in some areas. In other areas, freedom camping is allowed subject to four general rules:
• use a certified self-contained vehicle;
• stay a maximum of two nights in the same road/off-road parking area;
• vacate parking space by 9am on the day of departure;
• not return to the same road/off-road parking area within a two-week period.
On Waiheke Island there is no public dump station and the “stay for no more than two nights” rule applies to the entire island. Asian delicacies at the Auckland Night Market food stalls, all the way to five-star dining.
An easy way to navigate Auckland’s delicious cuisine is to plan an eatery around other tourism hot spots. Want to check out the super yachts at the Viaduct and visit Auckland’s Maritime Village? Plan a lunch at Soul Bar and Bistro. Taking in the sights at the Sky Tower? Stop by Al Brown’s Federal Deli. Visiting the Auckland Fish Market or Westhaven Marina? Stop by Peter Gordon’s Homeland or the rough-and-ready fish and chip bar Swashbucklers. Heading west? First check you can get there after the recent storm damage, before grabbing a burger and a bevie at Brothers Beer Piha. Fancy an afternoon at the beach? End your day with a drink and dinner at one of the many eateries on Browns Bay’s busy Clyde Road on the North Shore.
It’s worth noting if your vehicle is parked up, senior citizens can travel for free on trains and selected bus and ferry services in Auckland, after 9am weekdays using an AT Hop card. Of course, navigating and finding parking in a city as spread out as Auckland can be tricky particularly if you have a lot of places to cover in one trip. That’s where Elle ArmonJones and The Big Foody Food Tour comes in. Her ‘Auckland in an Afternoon’ and ‘Tastebud Tours’ let visitors sample the mouth-watering morsels from around the city while their local guides share stories about the local characters, history and architecture. “I started The Big Foody back in 2009. “One of the comments we had on a recent tour was from a gentleman who said, ‘In three hours I feel like a local. I feel like you have introduced me to the most exciting and fun city in the world’.”
IT’S SHOWTIME
This melting pot of a city is overflowing with culture. Many local and international artists choose to make Tāmaki Makaurau their main New Zealand port of call. When planning a trip to Auckland, visit the Heart of the City website for a list of upcoming shows. For those visiting the city for the Covi Motorhome Caravan and Outdoor SuperShow, there are many stage shows on in the same weekend and in the weeks dovetailing that could piggie back onto your trip. Te Ahurei Toi o Tāmaki / Auckland Arts Festival (March 9-26,) is Auckland’s premiere arts event featuring a variety of theatre, dance and cultural acts. Aotea Square is transformed into the Magic Mirrors Spiegeltent, home to the festival’s big acts including this year’s headliner is Blanc de Blanc Encore, a circus cabaret act. Also in town: experience Auckland’s vibrant Pacific Island community at the Pasifika Festival at Western Springs (March 18-19) and BBC science journalist and author Dr Michael Mosley takes the stage at The Civic for his presentation, A Life Changing
Experience – Weight loss, Sleep, Wellness and How Your Body Works (March 15). Also taking the stage are comedian Danny Bhoy (March 24), jazz singer Madeleine Peyroux at Holy Trinity Cathedral (March 18), indie rock group Florence and the Machine at the Spark Arena (March 22), 80s rock pop group The Proclaimers at the Powerstation (March 25) and Wicked the Musical at the Sky City Theatre (March 31-April 22). If scrums and run-outs are your kind of show, catch the Blues vs Crusaders on March 18 and Black Caps vs Sri Lanka on March 25, both at Eden Park.
BLOOMING LOVELY
Auckland’s sub-tropical climate makes it great for growing and a visit to one of the many gorgeous gardens is a must-do. The Victorian glasshouses at the Auckland Domain Wintergardens are one of Auckland city’s historic treasures. They were first built in 1913 and feature rare plants such as the morphopallus titanum (corpse flower) as well as subtropical and seasonal displays. No matter the season there’s always something to see at the Auckland Botanic Gardens in Manurewa (25km from the city exit 451 if driving south). Mosey through the grounds, which include a native plant ID trail, camellia gardens, an African plants garden and a Gondwana arboretum. It’s hard to imagine that a four-hectare country garden established for more than 50 years could still be a secret, but Ayrlies Garden in Whitford is one of the city’s hidden treasures with its beautiful old fashioned roses, ponds, waterfalls, liquidambar as well as subtropicals and wetland areas.

PARK LIFE
Auckland’s regional parks make it easy to forget you’re in the country’s biggest city. From Te Ārai point north of Wellsford all the way to Whakatīwai Regional Park east of Hunua, there are 27 regional parks and you can camp in some if you have booked and paid online for a spot in a designated camping area.
One option to use as a base is the campground at Ambury Park in Māngere Beach, where campers can see the shorebirds of the Manukau Harbour alongside farm animals such as sheep,
goats, and sometimes even peacocks in the working farm. There are several walks at Ambury, including the Foreshore Walk and the Lost Gardens walk, which explores stone mound remnants of the ancient Māori garden. Energetic travellers can take in the views from the top of Māngere maunga (mountain).
North of Auckland but still close enough to the city for easy travelling are Long Bay Regional Park (overnight parking) and Shakespear Park (Te Haruhi Bay campground); both are great swimming spots. A nudge further north at the mouth of the Puhoi and Waiwera River is Wenderholm Bay Regional Park, Auckland’s first regional park (overnight parking and Schischka campground). At Wenderholm there’s a bounty of natural attractions including a safe swimming beach, forest headlands, salt marshes and a sandspit. The area is historically significant for both Māori and Pakeha and there are archaeological sites and historical buildings and gardens around the park to explore. In 1953 Queen Elizabeth and Prince Phillip spent a day picnicking here, so make sure to bring your most regal thermos for a cup of tea beneath the pōhutukawa.
GET ON THE WATER
There’s much talk of Auckland’s two harbours: Manukau and Waitamatā, but there’s actually three harbours if you include Kaipara Harbour, New Zealand’s largest estuarine ecosystem. Other water attractions include the wild West Coast beaches facing the Tasman Sea, and eastern beaches edging on the Firth of Thames. The waterfront powered sites at Takapuna Beach Holiday Park are great for water babies and it’s deliciously close to the Takapuna Beach Cafe & Store, one of the North Shore’s most popular cafés, a great stop for excellent coffee, food and ice cream overlooking the beach. To explore the water, take in the views of Rangitoto while from a paddleboard at Takapuna Beach, surf or boogieboard at Piha or set sail on The Auckland Maritime Museum’s heritage scow, Ted Ashby. Gold Card holders can hop onto the Fullers Ferry to Waiheke Island for free, using an AT Hop card to visit sheltered beaches, vineyards such as Mudbrick and Stonyridge and eateries such as The Oyster Inn. To travel to islands further afield, Auckland is just a four and a half hour ferry ride to the pristine white beaches and native forest on Great Barrier Island. The sealink ferry

The Te Ara Moana sea kayak trail on the south eastern coast between Ōmana Regional Park and Waharau Regional Park, traces traditional Māori transport routes and is designed for all sea kayak craft and for kayakers of all levels. It can be kayaked in its entirety over five days with kayakers staying at campsites along the coast or alternatively do segments of the trail or a day trip. Some of the campsites along the trail are only accessible via sea kayak and are often empty – a great way to feel total freedom while only 40 minutes from the city.
SHOP UNTIL YOU DROP
Whether you’re after a souvenir or a whole new wardrobe, the City of Sales is nirvana for retail therapy. Big shopping malls like Commercial Bay in the CBD, Westfield Newmarket and Sylvia Park in Mount Wellington are ideal if time is a factor, or make a day of it by shopping at a more leisurely pace with exclusive boutique shopping on Ponsonby Road in Ponsonby, High Street in the CBD, and Teed Street in Newmarket. Ōtara and
Avondale markets are the places to go to pick up bargains or second-hand treasures and perhaps even some Pacific Island delicacies for lunch. If you’re in the market for a new motorhome or RV, naturally the Covi SuperShow is the obvious must-see.
In Māori, Tāmaki Makaurau means ‘the area desired by many’ and with its
abundant kai and natural wonders, it’s easy to see why the area gets its name, and why this vibrant North Island city ranks highly in international surveys of the world’s most liveable cities. Even if Auckland isn’t your home, you’ll feel welcome here – even if you don’t like almond milk lattes.

THE GREAT DEBATE: CARAVAN VS MOTORHOME
If you’re on the lookout for an RV to call home, one of the most challenging aspects of your purchase can be making the call on whether to get a motorhome or a caravan. Lisa Jansen looks at some of the considerations you might want to take into account.
If you’re considering buying an RV, one of the biggest decisions you have to make is whether to get a motorhome or a caravan. Both offer the convenience of a home on wheels, but they come with distinct advantages and disadvantages, depending on your particular circumstance.
Before we go any further, let’s clarify some terminology. This article will use ‘motorhome’ to refer to any RV with an engine built in, including buses and campervans. ‘Caravan’, on the other hand, refers to any RV on a trailer that requires a separate vehicle to tow it, including fifth-wheelers and campaign trailers.
Now that we’re clear on that, which one is best? As so often in life, there isn’t one right answer that fits all, but chances are one suits you better than the other, depending on personal preference and how you like to travel. Therefore, the key to making the right decision is understanding the pros and cons of each.
CARAVANS – THE BEST BITS
One of the main advantages of a caravan is the flexibility. You can park, set yourself up and leave the trailer at the campground and explore in your towing vehicle without having to pack everything up each time. Additionally, caravans are often cheaper than motorhomes of similar size. However, the cost of buying a towing vehicle must be taken into account. But many caravan owners argue they would want a separate car anyway, and when comparing the cost of a motorhome plus a car with the cost of a caravan and a tow vehicle, the latter often comes in cheaper.
A separate towing vehicle also offers additional storage space, and roof racks on the car can be handy for items like kayaks, bikes and surfboards. A caravan also has the advantage that if repairs are needed on either the trailer or the car, you still have the other one to stay in or use for transportation. This can be particularly beneficial for full-time nomads who don’t have a home to return to, or when you’re travelling far away from your home base.
CONSIDERATIONS
Of course, caravans can also have their drawbacks. For starters, setting up at a campground can take longer than with a motorhome. However, modern accessories like motor-movers, levellers and automatic leg extensions have made the process easier in recent years. Similarly, getting ready to leave a campground can take longer, which can be a disadvantage in emergencies.
In addition, many caravans do not have built-in fresh and greywater tanks. Instead, they must be set up when you
Caravans are often cheaper than motorhomes of similar sizearrive at a campground. As a result, you can’t just do the dishes or take a shower anytime, anywhere, in the same way you can with most motorhomes. However, some caravans now come with built-in tanks, and they can also be retrofitted in many cases. Do keep in mind, though, that those tanks and water add significant weight to the vehicle, and might result in your rig being overweight when on the road.
Another disadvantage of caravans is the reduced manoeuvrability. For many, towing a caravan, especially a larger one, can be daunting, and backing into tight sites at campgrounds can be a challenge. Additionally, maintaining and registering two vehicles on an ongoing basis can be more expensive. And finally, it can also be harder to pull over and stop at sights along the road, as finding parking for a car and caravan can be tricky (though large motorhomes would often have the same challenge).
MOTORHOMES – THE BEST BITS
Just like caravans, motorhomes also have several distinct advantages – starting with the fact that setting up and packing down is usually much easier. With a motorhome, you can pull up at a campground (or the side of the road) and, within minutes, be ready to enjoy the views with a nice cup of coffee or a meal.
Another advantage of motorhomes is that they usually have freshwater and greywater tanks built in, which means you can make lunch or coffee and do the dishes or take a shower anywhere, at any time. This added convenience is great for those who like to freedom camp in remote areas, or stop for a meal en route to the final destination. In addition, a motorhome means only one vehicle needs to be registered, insured and maintained, potentially making them cheaper in terms of ongoing costs – especially for those who do not need a separate car.
Some people report that they feel safer in a motorhome. Many travellers, especially those on their own, like knowing that if anything happens, they can get from their bed into the driver’s seat and take off in a matter of minutes without having to leave the motorhome or worrying about attaching a trailer.
Finally, those who aren’t towing masters can feel more comfortable driving and parking a motorhome than a caravan.
CONSIDERATIONS
Most seasoned travellers have found themselves in this situation at least once or twice. You’ve arrived at your campsite, you’ve set everything up, got your awning and camping chairs out and made yourself at home. And then you remember you forgot to pick up something you need for dinner, or you decide to explore some attraction that’s too far away to walk to. So you have to pack everything up and then set up again once you return.
This is probably the number one reason people decide against a motorhome. Everywhere you go, your entire home has to come too. When freedom camping or staying in campgrounds that don’t allocate sites, it also means that you need to give up your spot and hope to find one again when you return. Meanwhile, your neighbours will just leave their caravan and take off in their car.
Another disadvantage is that motorhomes tend to be more expensive to purchase than caravans of the same size. Additionally, storage can be a challenge without an extra towing vehicle, especially in smaller motorhomes. Lastly, with the driver’s cab taking up space, there is less living space in many motorhomes compared to a caravan of the same length. However, in some motorhomes, the front seats are set up as swivel chairs, or there is a bed above the cab, so the space is used as part of the living area.
SO, WHICH ONE IS RIGHT FOR YOU?
Whether a motorhome or a caravan is right for you is a personal choice; there’s no such thing as a ‘one-size-fits-all’ answer. Take some time to think about how you like to travel, and then consider what that would look like in a motorhome versus a caravan. Or even better, try to hire both for a week or two each, and see first-hand what works for you and what doesn’t. Whichever you choose, make sure you do your homework to understand not only the pros and cons of motorhomes versus caravans but also the difference between the various models within each category. But most importantly, enjoy your travels around our beautiful country, no matter what home on wheels you end up buying.

IT’S THE LITTLE THINGS THAT COUNT
Having the right extras on board can transform a holiday from ‘great’ to ‘wow’. Emma Rawson explores the latest trends in accessories, tech and gadgets.
Coco Chanel once said, ‘Accessories are what makes a woman’, and while she was talking about jewellery and gloves, should the fashion legend have gone camping in this day and age, she would have surely said the same about motorhomes and caravans. Gone are the days when your camping accessories were limited to the odd collection of melamine plates, heavy awnings and portable tinny-sounding speakers. These days, tailoring your RV to your specific needs is a personal journey, with a slew
of technology and gadgetry designed with every type of camper in mind.
There are so many innovations in this field, we’ve introduced this new accessories section in Motorhomes, Caravans & Destinations. In every issue you’ll learn about the latest product developments, technology advances, vehicle add-ons, plus little extras like new sleeping bags or a thermos mug for your coffee, to help you get out of your camping bed with a spring in your step. In this issue take a look at some of the top trends.
TREND #1 NATURE LOVER
Motorhomes and caravans are your home on the road, so it’s not surprising that many trends in this industry mirror those happening in architecture and interior design ‒ just on a more compact scale. Nature-inspired designs and natural ecofriendly materials are making their way into the RV world in a big way. Curved awning designs in earth-toned colours such as the Thule Quickfit Awning Tent from RV & Marine Supplies and many of the awnings and shelters in the Dometic
GO range. Take a style cue from the rounded shapes of nature. When inside, look out for natural fibers like merino picnic blankets, sheepskin seat covers and wooden furniture and accessories like the Zempire Kitpac Bamboo Spike Table from RV Super Centre.
TREND #2 DOWN TO EARTH
In a motorhome or caravan, eco-friendly design and sustainability often also means efficiency and there have been many advances in this area in recent years. Batteries and portable power stations are becoming more lightweight and longer lasting. In the big picture these innovations reduce e-waste, but on the short term it means your vehicle and appliances are powered more efficiently. Mobile solar power systems have advanced in leaps and bounds in the past few years and most new mobile power stations have solar attachments such as the EcoFlow Portable Solar Panel 110W from RV Super Centre.
TREND #3 TECHORATING
While there’s nothing like camping to bring you closer to nature, sometimes it’s nice to snuggle up at the end of the day and watch a good movie or keep up with current affairs on the news. It used to be that to watch TV in an RV you needed a satellite, but these days there are more options with portable wireless broadband available from providers such as Wireless Nation (check out their NZMCA data plan), opening up opportunities for streaming services such as Netflix, TVNZ OnDemand and Neon. Satellites themselves have got more streamlined and easy to install, such as the 12V KiwiSat Automatic Satellite Antenna from Apollo, specifically designed for New Zealand’s motorhome and caravan markets. The range of compact 12V TVs built especially for RVs has grown exponentially in the past few years, brands like Avtex specialise in this area.
TREND #4 EASY DRIVER
With a growing awareness of road safety, new RV technology is rising to the occaision making driving safer and easier. Reversing and rear view cameras are no longer pixelated, with the latest screens available in 1080p high definition. A good starter model is the RSE 1080p Full HD Camera System – 7” monitor removable with suction cup. Keep the driver happy with seat warmers and
steering wheel covers, and give everyone peace of mind with new safety gadgets like the Safe-T-Alert 45 Series dual LPG and Carbon Monoxide alarm from Apollo.
TREND #5 GET INTO SPECIFICS
Customisation is the word of the hour, with more and more accessories being tailored to specific vehicles. There’s no more trying to shoehorn an appliance intended for a motorhome into a caravan. The Thule A Frame Caravan Light Bike Rack from RV Super Centre for instance is a lightweight carrier especially designed for caravans, or the Camper Trolley
CT2500TAM Caravan Mover, a remote control trolley with caterpillar tread tyres, which will help move or park your caravan for you. And it’s not just the big things – you can pick products that are the exact fit for your vehicle right down to finding the perfect dining set to match your vehicle. When it comes to your RV accessories, the world is your oyster.

NETFLIX AND CHILL
Camper entertainment is experiencing a huge rise, with smart TVs leading the way in must-have technology. We took a look at a mobile-specific 12 volt TV that ticks all the boxes for people on the move.
Taking your house on the road used to mean going without many of the creature comforts you get at home. While RV-friendly TVs have been available in the past, they’ve usually been pretty basic affairs. Things are changing; however; people want more connectivity in their RVs, and don’t want to compromise on quality or options. These days, we want it all. And we can get it too, according to Duncan MacMillan of Apollo Entertainment in Whangaparaoa on Auckland’s North Shore. “RV owners are used to having Netflix, TVNZ+, Neon and all the other streaming services they can get on their home TV. They want to be able to look at the videos they made on their phone that day, or to look up how to fix something on YouTube; even to play music from Spotify,” he says. “Basically, they want a TV that has the same capabilities as the one they have at home.”
Enter the Avtex TVs, a user-friendly smart TV that does all the above and more. It utilises WebOS Smart TV software, a smart TV operating system that’s set up to allow control and access to more advanced features and connected devices. Generally considered to be one of the best smart platforms, the Avtex range is easy to use; just download the apps you want, and away you go.
“The WebOS connected TV range is a technological leap for TVs in the RV industry – and they are selling fast; four times faster than the TVs we had last year. The market is huge; Avtex makes 250,000 TVs a year for the worldwide RV market alone,” says Duncan.
Most campers these days are designed to have space for a TV, and there are a range of sizes available so there’s something to suit every vehicle. Avtex TVs are available in 19, 22, 24, 27 and 32 inch screen sizes, with a 39 inch coming soon. “You’ll have to have a pretty big RV for that one!” says Duncan. Prices start from $1,050 for the 19 inch.
BUILT TO LAST
Unlike your TV at home, this TV is built to survive the roads; Duncan recalls one notable occasion when an Avtex TV was recovered from an RV that had rolled three times. “Unfortunately the campervan didn’t survive – but the TV did!” he says. “They are built to be pretty bulletproof, which is what you want when you’re travelling. They are also lightweight, with the 19 inch TV and stand coming in at just 2.7kg.
FEATURES AND FUNCTIONS
Avtex TVs have been designed and developed to make a seamless transition from home to campervan. Easy to set up, use and store, they are pre-tuned and pre-tested by Apollo, and can be installed by your local dealer.
With both digital and satellite tuners, it’s possible to get both terrestrial and satellite channels. Netflix and YouTube – the world’s second-largest search engine –are pre-uploaded by Apollo, and all the streaming platforms are available; you’ll just need an internet connection, which can be anything from the campground wifi to a hotspot from your phone. For Sky, you’ll also need a satellite dish and a Sky TV card or you can share SkyGo from your phone to the TV.
ABOUT APOLLO ENTERTAINMENT
Apollo Entertainment was founded in 2009. After initially specialising in TVs, Apollo now sells a range of RV accessories, including hydraulic levelling, lithium batteries, solar technology and e-bike racks. Owner Duncan Macmillan got his electronic expertise when he served in the Royal New Zealand Navy, specialising in electronic warfare. After leaving the Navy in 1995, Duncan moved to the marine industry, where he supplied form navigation for superyachts. “I sold my first plasma screen back in 2012 for $25,000. A lot has changed since then; back in the day I used to build my own TVs but now we work with overseas designers and manufacturers to bring tomorrow’s technology to today.” Apollo has exclusive rights for the Avtex WebOS platforms across New Zealand and Australia; ask your local RV dealer for more information on WebOS and Avtex smart TV options.
These TVs also provide the option to mirror cast or Apple airplay. For mirror casting, open the app you want to play on your phone and open Smartview. From there, choose your TV as your screen and play anything you like directly from your phone. It’s a great way to show the family what you’ve been up to!
ENERGY EFFICIENCY
Don’t worry about draining your battery; these TVs are made to use a very low amount of power. “They are multi-voltage, and turn off completely when you’re not using them,” explains Duncan. “There’s also an on-screen battery meter and a low battery indicator so you don’t lose power just as you get to the best bit of what you’re watching.” There’s even a timer record option from the programme guide so you won’t miss your favourite show.
WIRED FOR SOUND
One of the top complaints from campers is that they don’t always want to watch the same thing. An RV can be a very enclosed space, and it can be tricky to get a good night’s sleep when your partner has the rugby on full-blast. “Avtex has spent quite a bit of time making sure the audio is up to speed,” says Duncan. “These TVs have Bluetooth 5.2 – with no irritating audio lag – so if one of you wants to head to bed, simply switch the bluetooth to headphones. That way, if you want to watch TV you won’t wake the whole motorhome.”

LET US ENTERTAIN YOU
Emma Rawson explores the latest mobile phone, TV film and sound innovations for RVs.
Life on the road doesn’t mean you have to leave your favourite music, social media and TV shows at home. Motorhome and caravan travelling in the 2020s is very much a home-awayfrom-home experience where the latest entertainment is at your fingertips.
PHONE IT IN
Smartphones have become so ubiquitous in our lives in the past few years they have quickly become a holiday essential. Google Maps has got many drivers out of a pickle and our phone also doubles as our holiday camera. There are now many RV power
devices with apps that help you monitor power usage and charge. Plus, there’s a slew of entertainment apps (Spotify, RNZ, iHeart, Audible, Apple Arcade, Netflix, Neon, to name a few) to keep you movin’ and groovin’. Top tip: it pays to upgrade your apps before you hit the road – this will stop you using data while you’re out and about and apps that aren’t up to date can be a power drain. If you’re in the market for a new phone, the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold4 is one of the latest Android phones with a 7.6-inch Main Screen, big enough to use as a TV viewing screen or in place of a PC while you’re away from home. The Armor
Aluminum casing is super durable and folds in half to protect your screen from scratches. If you prefer something a bit more pocket sized, the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip4 will fold down to the size of a small wallet or makeup compact. For those that are team Apple, the iPhone 14 Pro comes with a 48MP camera and even has a crash detection service, where the phone will send an emergency signal and make a 111 call if it detects you’ve been in a serious crash. Even if you have a smart TV in your RV, it’s worth installing the apps on your phone for your favourite streaming services as many allow you to download movies and entire seasons of TV shows, allowing
you to watch your favourites without the need for a Wi-Fi connection.
GET CONNECTED
To get Wi-Fi within your vehicle you’ll need wireless broadband, essentially high speed internet that connects to the internet via a mobile network. Vodafone/One New Zealand, Spark, and Wireless Nation all have wireless broadband data plans to suit your usage (Wireless Nation has an NZMCA plan) and can provide a portable modem that has its own SIM card. Wireless Nation’s modem can run off 12-24V battery power (an adapter may be required) but it comes with a 230/240V to 12-24V wall plug for mains power.
MOBILE MUSIC
Once you’ve got your favourite music playlist playing on the Spotify app on your phone, if you want the whole vehicle to sing along there are several player and speaker options. A dashboard multimedia player like the RSE Double Din multimedia radio with Bluetooth is like a traditional car stereo on steroids. This multimedia system allows you to connect via Bluetooth to your phone and other devices with a few extras like a car rear view function. A soundbar stereo like the 12V Sound Bar with Wireless Audio Technology is a great option and can be used as a speaker for any device with Bluetooth. or to enhance your TV’s sound. If you want to take your music
“Life on the road doesn’t mean you have to leave your favourite music, social media and TV shows at home.”
BAR NONE
Ever wondered why you might be on no bars of cellphone coverage while the person next to you has full connection?
If your cellphone coverage is bad, it could be due to the distance or line of sight between your phone and your mobile provider’s closest tower. Another reason your coverage may be bad could be because of the frequency of the network (mobile networks use
outside, opt for a portable Bluetooth speaker, which can go anywhere. The JBL Charge 5is a great option due to its 20-hour battery life.
CINEMA UNDER THE STARS
For a little something special, consider the Samsung Freestyle Projector LSP3B, which is a portable film projector that connects to an external battery pack with a USB-C cable and allows you to watch movies or TV under the stars. The projector has a built-in 360-degree stereo and can project onto any surface, even a motorhome door or coloured walls. The angle of the projector can be easily adjusted and the auto leveling function will compensate for uneven ground.
radio communication). Newer phones tend to have bigger antenna, which can help with signals. Ever wondered why your phone runs out of power quickly while you’re on the road? When driving through very remote areas your phone will use a lot of power as it tries to connect to mobile networks. Putting your phone on airplane mode until you’re in regular coverage could be an option if your phone is low on juice.

SMART (PHONE) CAMPING
It’s pretty rare to see a paper map for navigation around New Zealand. These days we get around using apps – and these days there’s one for pretty much anything you need.
LizDobson takes a look at the apps that make life on the road a bit easier.
Whether we like it or not, smartphones are a part of all our lives. These days we use multiple apps in daily life; be it access to bank accounts, tracking our steps, social media platforms, or monitoring our diets.
There are some phenomenal statistics about apps. Research shows that there are 80+ apps installed on the average smartphone, and in June 2022, approximately 90,000 mobile apps were released through the Google Play Store. Don’t worry, you don’t need them all (and they certainly don’t replace your trusty copy of MCD!), but there are a few that are handy to keep on your phone.
If you’re not accustomed to using apps, your local phone provider will be able to help you, however for most people, it’s a matter of searching on Google Play or Apple’s App Store.
DAY TO DAY
For everyday use, replace Google Maps with the Apple Maps app, as it updates regularly and gives precise instructions, such as “at the next traffic lights, turn left”. For up to date weather forecasts, download AccuWeather, as it has the most accurate information. For example, it will let you know the minute when rain is expected at your location.
ON THE ROAD
Below are some of the best apps for RV owners in New Zealand, and are essential when you head off on your summer road trips.
NZMCA APP
A great place to start when you’re looking for somewhere to stay, what’s in your immediate area and more. It’s pretty much a one-stop shop for members, with information on motorhome-friendly towns, journey planners, events, rallies, trails and more.
Wherever you are in New Zealand, open the app to find plenty of helpful
information on nearby campsites. It has regular traffic updates, information on dump stations, local shops, gas stations, reserves and even laundromat locations.
NZMCA members also get some very sharp deals – simply click on their ‘deals’ button to find special offers on everything from campsites, camping equipment and fuel, to spa and adventure experiences and more.
NZ DOC CAMPSITE FINDER
This free app lists the more than 250 campsites that are managed by the Department of Conservation and gives you access to some of our most amazing scenery. DOC campsites are perfect for freedom camping and are well managed.
• Campsites are organised by island, region and area
• You can get directions to each campsite direct from the app
• Coordinates to campsites are available offline, which is another great feature when you’re struggling for WiFi.
CAMPABLE
This is a must-have free app if you are interested in staying somewhere slightly
“Wherever you are in New Zealand, open the app to find plenty of information on nearby campsites.”
Apps are great to find ideal freedom camping sitesdifferent to the more mainstream camping grounds. This gives you access to places like vineyards, working farms, beaches, privately owned land, pubs and more.
Before you book, make sure you read the rules of etiquette for the property, and check that your type of motorhome or campervan is able to pitch up there. It’s a great opportunity to meet locals, and see a very different side to New Zealand.
CAMPERMATE
This is another free app that gives you a list of campsites to stay and a map for you to use to get to them. It also offers some good local deals.
Benefits include a pet-friendly campsite filter, access to a wide range of campsite locations from fancy fully serviced sites to local people’s private land, handy alerts for weather warnings, user feedback and tips about locations and downloadable maps.
RANKERS CAMPING NZ
This official app for camping has reviews of places written by travellers, and camping
locations across New Zealand. It’s free and helps you plan your trips before you leave home and once on the road. With full offline capability, it’s a good option for off-grid travel as well as those looking for full-facility camp and holiday parks.
The app includes activities and walking tracks, with extensive details including reviews, Māori and colonial history, geology, flora, fauna and more.
ALLTRAILS
A good one for hikers, walkers, runners and bikers, this is a handy app for discovering what’s in your immediate area. It’s an easy app to work; simply put in the level of difficulty, how long (and how high) you want to go, whether you need dog/child/wheelchair access and you’re on your way. It includes options of what you want to see on your route, like waterfalls, flora and fauna, beaches, caves etc,. (it even includes a pub walk!) and you can track the routes you’ve done. Photos are encouraged too, to give other app users the ability to discover the current state of the tracks.

YOU’VE GOT THE POWER
These two breakthrough products will completely change the way you power up your motorhome or caravan.
Finding solutions that provide the capacity of power you need for your motorhome or caravan can be a challenge.
Over the past few years, there has been several significant advances in the technology for batteries and portable power. These two new products from Enerdrive and EcoFlow will totally transform your camping experience.
POWER UP YOUR BATTERY
You won’t know yourself after making the switch from a regular 12V AGM lead acid battery to a 12V/200AH Enerdrive B-Tec lithium battery. While lithium batteries do cost more upfront than their lead acid counterparts, they are well worth the investment for the significantly longer battery amp hours, allowing you to run more devices and to stay off grid for longer. Not only are they lighter and more efficient than lead acid batteries, but Enerdrive B-Tec Lithium batteries are also fast to charge from mains power, solar or a DC to DC charger. Designed for New Zealand conditions and deep cycle applications, Enerdrive B-Tec Lithium Batteries can be used to 80% of their capacity, compared to 50% in a standard lead acid battery. They also have a longer life cycle than lead acid batteries with more than 2000 cycles (based on 80% consumption). The cycle life of a battery refers to the number of charge and discharge cycles a battery completes before it loses performance. Should you accidentally drain the battery to zero, the battery features a built-in reset button so you can easily restart a flat battery. The Enerdrive B-TEC series including the Enerdrive B-Tec G2 Lithium Battery with Bluetooth Monitor 12V/200AH are second generation “smart” batteries featuring a smartphonebased monitoring system that measures
battery capacity, voltage, current and state of charge, to allow you the freedom to focus on the fun things like enjoying the outdoors.
POWER WITHOUT LIMITATIONS
EcoFlow Portable Power Stations provide the backup power you need when off grid and additional power for all your devices so you are never without power. The EcoFlow River Portable Power Station provides 600W of power – with super fast recharging from 0 to 100% in two hours (from a mains AC outlet). Power up from mains, battery or via the EcoFlow Portable Solar Panel 110W, the River comes with two AC outlets with a built-in 600W inverter and can power devices up to 1800W. This provides power for a wide range of essential devices such as fridges, TVs, laptops and even hairdryers. When you need power for a sustained period of time, opt for the EcoFlow Delta MAX Portable Power Station 2400W/2016Wh. This compact power station is perfect for your off-grid adventures, tiny homes or sleepouts and emergency back-up power. The Ecoflow Delta Max has an AC Max input of 2000W and will work with power-hungry appliances such as microwaves, portable heaters and electric kettles. STAY SHARP:
CAMERAS REDEFINED
In the past year, there’s been a quiet revolution in the resolution of camera technology, and Kiwi company RSE is leading it, Peta Stavelli reports.
RSE has always been a market leader in mobile technology, offering recreational vehicle and boat owners the latest advances in 12V televisions, satellite receivers and antennae that offer perfect reception, no matter where your travels take you.
With a change in ownership in February 2022 the new team has continued that tradition. They have redefined camera capability, upgrading the standard from
720p (High Definition) to 1080p (Full High Definition); and users are saying the viewing quality is vastly different –like getting new prescription lenses. And it’s not just the sharpness of the image that has been upgraded, but the quality, capability and housing of the camera units.
If you’re looking at investing in new camera technology or upgrade your old system, there’s a world of difference in what’s now on offer.
HARDWIRED AND HAPPY?
The hardwired monitor has two camera inputs, one input on screen at any one time, with grid-lines available. The system offers two adjustable eyeball camera options each with a different lens angle.
This shift away from the more conventional dual camera system utilises a splitter cable that not only allows for easier connection, but also means it’s easier if you decide to install another camera at
a later date. A tough new black powder coating protects the aluminium housings.
Practically speaking, the two cameras have different functions. The narrower 95° view is best suited for traffic watching, while the 120° lens makes backing and checking on bikes or tow vehicles a breeze.
There is a choice between a mirror or a dash monitor; starting price for a monitor
is $355. The two-angle camera package starts at $505, or you can look at single camera options at $265 each.
HERE’S LOOKING AT YOU, KID
The latest wireless developments at RSE have been market tested since April last year, and the feedback has been assuredly positive. You can choose to suction mount or hard-mount the continuous-viewing monitor, which is powered via a cigarette lighter adapter. You can input up to four cameras that will transmit provided they have a reliable 12 volt power source. The monitor allows you to choose various camera views, select which camera to hear the audio, and record via memory card.
The cameras can be installed in any place they are required. This means that in addition to the option of a traditional standard reversing camera, you also have multiple other options at your disposal. You can keep an eye on your children and grand-children in the back seat, and also listen out for them to see if they’re stirring from their nap. You can watch your pets, horse trailers and live-stock in real time; or simply monitor your tow hitch and bike racks. And when you’re parked up, you can also use the cameras in the same way as you would use your home security camera to keep an eye on your valuable equipment or as an extra eye on the comings and goings around the campground.
The starter package of a Dash monitor and one camera is $655 with each additional camera at $275.
WIRED OR WIRELESS –WHICH IS BEST?
Only you can decide which is the best camera system for you, but just to recap:
the two systems – wired and unwired –each have pluses and minuses.
Essentially, a wired system is where the monitor provides power to the camera via a cable. A hard wired solution can provide comfort for some, while others say it’s more time-consuming to install than a wireless system, and therefore overall more expensive. Wired systems can be harder to upgrade. Conversely, a wireless camera system takes less installation time, and the monitor can be easily transferred to another tow vehicle. The earlier model wireless cameras with the push button pairing system are not interchangeable with the new wireless Full High Definition cameras because the componentry cannot be mixed. But if you’d heard that wireless technology was unreliable, RSE’s systems have changed all of that. In-market testing has proven that if you have a reliable 12volt power source; RSE can supply the Full HD camera system to match it. Start out strong and invest by getting four cameras, or buy the basic monitor and camera package and add more cameras as you go, or as your needs change.

THE DEVIL IS IN THE DETAIL
Lisa Jansen explores some of the often-overlooked finer points that can make or break the enjoyment of a mobile home
When it comes to selecting an RV, the focus tends to be on big, obvious aspects such as size, age, motorhome vs caravan, layout and number of beds. But having recently swapped my 1999 Ford Transit for a similar 2004 Transit, I realise how much difference the little stuff can make. And I’m not the only one who has found the devil is often in the detail.
When I talked with other motorhome and caravan owners, as well as dealers, they highlighted little things that can have a significant impact on enjoyment. While some can be changed later, others are hard to modify down the line, so should be considered carefully when purchasing.
SLEEPING ARRANGEMENTS
Probably not surprisingly, the right bed(s) can have a considerable impact. In my new van, the bed is about 10cm longer and, being about 180cm tall, those 10cm are a life-changer.
Other owners agree that the size of beds is important. However, what makes a bed suitable seems to be different for everyone. Tall people care mostly about length. Couples, especially older ones and those spending a lot of time in their RV, say having an island bed that’s accessible from both sides is a bonus. While many agree
that over-the-cab beds are great for saving space, getting up there can be a challenge when you are older or have an injury, in which case, a sleeping option on the ground floor can be preferable.
LOADING CAPACITY & WEIGHT
Size is important, but consideration should also be given to loading weight. As Toni Farrell, from Coastal Motorhomes & Caravans in Whakatāne, says, “Many of our customers want a motorhome that only requires a Warrant of Fitness and not a Certificate of Fitness, as the former tends to be cheaper. That is all well and good, but what they often don’t consider is that it reduces the overall loading capacity and can result in problems when being weighed at truck stops.”
Similarly, loading weight can be an issue for caravan owners, who must ensure their car and towbar can handle the full load weight - not just the empty weight of the caravan. Toni recommends thinking carefully about what will be loaded into your motorhome or caravan and to consider that when buying.
BUY FOR YOU –NOT YOUR FAMILY
It’s tempting to consider family and friends who might travel with you. But
don’t overlook your own needs. “We regularly have customers who want to buy an RV with a layout that suits their extended family,” says Toni.
“For example, they might want one with beds for the kids and grandchildren. While that is a nice sentiment, many of them return saying the family doesn’t use the RV and the layout doesn’t suit them as a couple.”
Bernice and Roy Vannini, who have been living the RV life on the road for many years, agree. Although they have the space for extra beds, they designed the layout with just the two of them in mind. “Ninety-nine per cent of the time it’s just us, so we wanted to make it perfect for us. There is always the option to add tents if the family wants to come along.”
THE LITTLE ROOMS
RV toilets and bathrooms range from a portable toilet in a cupboard to small wet-cells and full-sized en-suite bathrooms with separate showers. Once you’ve picked an option, you’re stuck with it. My first van had a tiny wet-cell with a fixed shower. That was fine, but I value the slightly larger room and detachable shower in my new van. However, it’s still a wet-cell, meaning that showering floods the entire space, which can be annoying. ⊲

“We had an all-in-one room in our former motorhome,” says RVer Yvonne Hewitt. “Our new one now has a separate shower and toilet, and that’s so much easier. No more wet toilet. However, it does take up more space and adds weight.”
COOKING AND KITCHEN SPACE
I envy people who have an oven, but I’ve met many who have one and don’t use it, saying they would rather have more storage space. One thing upon which almost everyone seems to agree is that bench space is essential, with several owners, especially those with smaller vans, saying they wish they had more room to prepare food and stack dishes. Many, especially those who rarely connect to power, agree that microwaves are not a necessity.
FUTURE THINKING
There are also a few details that can be added or changed later on - which is not to say you shouldn’t consider them when purchasing. These include making
WE WOULDN’T BE WITHOUT...
We asked some RVers about their motorhome and caravan must-haves:
“I love that our shower head can be used outside to rinse off sandy feet.”
— Kylee Maree Nairn“I love that my drawers have magnetic closures. No more drawers flying open while driving because I forgot to push in the closure button.”
— Sharla May“Seats that swivel. At first, I thought them a pain because I’m short-legged and the apparatus that enables the seat to swivel adds height to the seat. But now we wouldn’t be without them.”
— Tracey Waterreus“Motor-movers. We weren’t worried about them, but our van had them, so we thought ‘bonus’. We’re in our 30s, and my husband is a fantastic backer,
sure you have enough power for your intended use, large enough water tanks, heating (especially if you plan to travel during winter), and enough storage space, including storage for wet and dirty gear.
EVERYONE IS DIFFERENT
Another detail that can make a big difference is tinted windows. They are one of the reasons I chose my new van. I love the privacy. However, it’s worth noting that they make the inside darker. And then there are wardrobes. I initially thought the one in my new van was wasted space and that I would turn it into shelves. But, I now find it handy to have a place to hang clothes - no more crinkled shirts. While the perfect mobile home and set-up are different for everyone, it’s worth considering these details before buying. My advice is to talk to other owners, do your research and maybe even hire a motorhome once or twice to get some realworld experience of what it’s like before investing hard-earned money.
but these are amazing. They mean you can have the caravan however you want it on your site.”
— Jennifer van Dijk“I love that our slide-out is on the footpath side, so when you stop you can just slide it out anywhere. You can’t do that when it slides out onto the road.”
— Treve WadeDue to its modular design, you can add two or more tents side by side or awning to awning. If you own a motorhome, campervan or a caravan then this tent provides an instant extra room which can be freestanding or easily attached to a sail track.
The OZTENT is also the perfect tent for fishing or boating. Spend more time fishing and boating and less time erecting your tent.
The OZTENT gives you time to relax and enjoy the great outdoors because that is the very reason you are out there.
You won't regret the convenience, durability and ease of use this tent offers.
