HOW TO CHOOSE THE PERFECT RV FOR YOU With so many gorgeous vehicles on the market, how do you work out which RV is the right one for you? We’ve put together a list of considerations so when you do sign that special agreement, you know you’ve picked the right one for you.

18

A

nyone looking for an RV in New Zealand will find themselves spoiled for choice. It can feel like a daunting task; everything is on offer, from massive modern fifth-wheelers to converted buses, old and new motorhomes and caravans of all sizes and convenient little vans. While it’s great to have so many options, it’s easy to feel a little overwhelmed when it comes to picking that special one that’s to become your travel home. Part of the challenge is that there isn’t one correct answer. What is perfect for one might not be suitable for someone else. Do you have kids? Are you looking for something that can handle off-road? Do you need something light and flexible enough to be able to stop in small towns and smaller car parks? Do you need easy access for mobility issues? Are you hoping to freedom camp for a few days, or are you more comfortable in campgrounds and parks? Is the kitchen your happy place? Do you need a fixed bed? Are you looking for a renovation project or just something you can fill up and go? If you’re considering buying an RV – of any type – take some time to think about your individual priorities, preference and travel plans. To help you do so, we have compiled some key questions and considerations for you to to work through to find your perfect home on wheels.

TRY BEFORE YOU BUY

No matter how much you’re champing at the bit to sign on the dotted line, you

won’t really know what you’re looking for until you’ve tried it out. Plenty of places offer rentals as well as buying options; it’s a good idea to test-drive some different vehicles to see what you like. Another good idea is to visit a trade show like this one in Christchurch, or a local dealer with various RV options, so you can experience different layouts and configurations to see which ones might suit you. There’s a big group of people who have assumed they need a big motorhome, right up until the point they get tired of trying to find a big enough car park, and they realise they don’t need to pack the kitchen sink. Similarly, others will get hooked on the idea of a caravan until they realise they’ll have to get a new car as well to handle the weight. ‘Try before you buy’ is always the way to go with a big purchase like this. It will teach you more than all the desk research in the world.

HOW MUCH?

Before you fall in love with that milliondollar motorhome, do a budget check. Your budget will have a direct impact on many of the other decisions you have to make, so it’s a good idea to get a rough idea before you start looking. When you determine your budget, keep in mind that a more expensive RV will also mean higher insurance costs. On the other hand, a cheaper vehicle – especially an older or second-hand one – will more likely require repairs and maintenance, which can quickly add up, sometimes to

thousands of dollars. Old or new, all RVs come with additional costs for maintenance, registrations, insurance and more. Make sure you plan for this in your budget.

VEHICLE TYPE: TOWED VS DRIVEN

One of the first questions most people looking for a mobile home ask themselves is whether they are in the market for a towed or driven RV. Here are some of the key factors you might want to consider when making this decision. • Do you already have a towing vehicle, or would you need to keep a separate car anyway? If so, a caravan will likely be the cheaper option for you. (Bear in mind that if you are buying a caravan, you’ll need to ensure your car is equipped to tow it – some caravans are pretty heavy beasts.) • Do you want to move around a lot • Do you want to move around a lot, and value minimal setup effort once you arrive at a campsite? If so, a motorised RV that you can just park up and be done, without having to worry about pulling out legs or setting up fresh and grey water tanks, might be a better option for you. • Do you like the idea of parking up in one spot for longer and exploring the area from that base? If so, a caravan with a separate towing vehicle you can use to get around might work best for you. However, towing a smaller vehicle behind a motorhome or bus is an option that could also be worth considering. • Do you want to freedom camp a lot? ⊲

19

If so, it’s worth noting that many caravans (especially some of the older ones) don’t have built-in fresh and grey water tanks, which can make freedom camping harder. • Do you have a lot of gear such as kayaks, surfboards, bikes or skis? If so, you might value having a separate towing car to transport all that gear. • Do you feel nervous about driving a big rig? If so, you might feel more comfortable driving a motorhome or bus instead of towing a caravan.

IT AIN’T HEAVY…

Weight, both of the vehicle and the load, is a critical factor to consider when choosing your RV – and one that is often overlooked. Weight matters in several ways: 1. The weight of the vehicle and its load will determine if you need a WoF or a CoF. The latter is more expensive and needs to

20

be done more frequently (anything over 3500kg will need a CoF). 2. If your motorhome or caravan is registered with a WoF, you need to watch your weight as it is illegal to drive with a weight of more than 3500kg (including load). This can limit how much gear you can take. 3. The vehicle’s total weight, including its load, also determines what type of driver’s license you need. If your RV has a gross laden weight (GLW) of 6000kg or more, you cannot drive it using a standard driver’s license. 4. If you are buying a caravan, the weight will determine what towing capacity your vehicle will need to have. 5. Don’t underestimate how much things weigh! It doesn’t take a lot for a vehicle to become overloaded; bikes, food cans, wine bottles, books, water tanks, skis and recreational clothing and equipment can

really add up. Make sure you factor this in when considering your purchase.

NEW OR USED?

It’s fair to say that if money is no issue, buying new is the preferred option for many. Not only do you get a brand new home on wheels, but often you also get the chance to personalise it to your specific wants and needs, and warranty gives you peace of mind. However, for most people, money is a factor, and we all want the best we can find for our needs. Buying used has its advantages. For example, you can view and test drive the exact vehicle you’re looking to buy. If you like it, you can usually take it home right away without any waiting periods. In addition, if you buy an RV that’s only a couple of years old, most teething issues that can come with brand new vehicles should be sorted, but you should still have

THE SPACE DEBATE

No matter how big a mobile home you buy, your living space will be compact compared to a house. As such, getting the layout and configuration of the living space right is a crucial step in choosing the right RV for you. Here are some of the key things you may want to consider: 1. Overall: Be realistic. How many people will actually be travelling in your RV? The kids or grandkids might want to come with you every now and again, but do you really want to be hauling around a six-berth motorhome for the sake of having a couple of little ones for a few days once a year? 2. Beds: How many beds do you need, and what’s the preferred configuration? Do you want a big double bed or singles? Do you prefer an island bed? Are you happy to turn your living room into your bedroom at night, or do you want a permanent bed separate from the living space? 3. Kitchen: How much kitchen space do you need? Do you like to cook and want room to do so properly, or is a small kitchen all you need? Do you need an oven or a microwave? Do you need a big fridge/freezer, or will a small one do? 4. Bathroom: Do you want a full bathroom with a shower that’s separated from the toilet, or are you happy with an all-inone wet room? Do you prefer a cassette toilet or one that leads into a black water tank? 5. Dining & living: How many people need to fit around the dining table? Are you happy with your dining area also being your living area, or do you want

them separate? 6. Storage: How much storage space will you need? Will you need storage that’s accessible from the outside: for skis or wet clothes, for example? Are there specific items you want to take with you (think SUPs, skis, fishing gear, bikes, diving equipment etc.) that have specific storage requirements? 7. Think about what else you might need space for in your RV. For example, people who plan to work from their RVs should think about where they will do so. If you’re planning on travelling with kids, you might want to think about a play area for rainy days, and those travelling with pets need to think about where they will live and sleep.

ULTIMATE PORTABLE

BOATS SINCE 2007

POWER UP

Another vital factor to consider when choosing your RV is its power setup. RVs generally run on battery power when not plugged in. How much power you have while off-grid – and therefore how many different appliances and devices you can use – generally depends on the size and number of the batteries and how those batteries are charged. Most RVs have solar panels to charge the batteries, and most batteries will be charged while you’re plugged into power at a campground. In some cases, you can continue to charge them while you’re driving. If you plan to spend most nights at a powered camp site, batteries and solar panels are less important for you. However, if you want to be off-grid for several days – or even permanently – you must make sure you have the power setup to support this. While it is generally possible to add more battery capacity and solar panels later on, these are all ideas you want to consider when you’re looking at buying an RV. • What is the current setup? How much power does it • What is the current setup? How much power does it generate, and what lifestyle will it support? ⊲

a few good years before you need to prepare for more significant repairs (though there are no guarantees, of course). If, howver, you are looking for a renovation project, second-hand caravans and motorhomes can be a dream. You’ll pay less upfront for the vehicle, and you can spend as required; bear in mind that this could mean your new baby won’t be on the road for a while though!

www.takacat.co.nz 21

“Try before you buy’ is always the way to go with any big purchase like this.”

• If you’re buying a used or second-hand vehicle, don’t just take the previous owner’s word for it; get an expert to check the setup, engine and body. ‘Repenting at leisure’ is not a term you want to use on your holiday! • Keep in mind that all batteries have a limited lifespan (older batteries will be much less efficient than newer ones) and the efficacy of solar panels can vary, based on age and quality. • The quality of batteries varies significantly, so two batteries of the same capacity might provide vastly different output. Check with an expert before you buy. • If you think you might want to upgrade your power setup at some poing later on, make sure there is enough space on your RV for you to be able to install extras like batteries and solar panels.

22

BEWARE OF SCAMMERS

Unfortunately, people looking to buy RVs have occasionally been targeted by scammers. These range from people who don’t even have an RV to sell and are trying to steal your money, to those trying to sell RVs for much more than they are worth. We’ve got a few tips to help you protect yourself from becoming the victim of a scam. 1. Never hand over any money until you have met the person and have seen the RV (or have other evidence that they are trustworthy, such as people you know vouching for them). 2. Be very careful about what personal details you share over email or other online communications channels such as Facebook. If a deal looks too good to be true, it probably is. Don’t pay any money until you know exactly what you will get.

If you buy a used vehicle, always get a pre-purchase inspection done. You might also ask an RV expert to check features such as the power set up, the selfcontainment certification and other RV specific features which may not be covered by general pre-purchase inspections. Check the paperwork to make sure the person you’re buying from is the owner of the vehicle they are selling. Websites like thatcar.nz are great for checking if the ownership details you’ve been given from the previous owners are correct. This may seem like a lot of thinking, but when you consider how much money you’re about to fork out, it’s worth doing your research, especially if this is your first RV purchase. However, once you’ve done your due diligence, you’re well on your way to finding your perfect RV. ■

ALL EYES ON CHRISTCHURCH

Lisa Jansen explores New Zealand’s second-largest city and finds many reasons to visit and stay – with this weekend’s NZMCA Motorhome, Caravan and Leisure Show one of the main highlights.

T

his weekend, on May 21st and 22nd, the eyes of the RV community are firmly focused on Christchurch as it hosts the hotly-anticipated 2022 NZMCA Motorhome, Caravan and Leisure Show. After many months of uncertainty, everyone is champing at the bit to get out and about at this popular show – and it’s the perfect time for visitors to enjoy the Garden City. Those who haven’t been to Christchurch for a while might be in for a very pleasant surprise. After multiple setbacks, including the devastating earthquakes of 2010 and 2011, New Zealand’s second-largest city has done an impressive job rebuilding and expanding, morphing itself into a fantastic place to live, work and visit. With numerous camping options, a range of diverse attractions and sights, lots of small and large events throughout the year, and

26

some of the best bars and eateries in the country, Christchurch should be on every RVers list when touring the South Island.

A NEW CITY EMERGES

On July 31 1856, Christchurch became the first official city in New Zealand. However, despite its age, modern-day Christchurch is a very new city. After the February 2011 earthquake that tragically took 185 lives, the city had to rebuild. Over 3,000 buildings were damaged beyond repair, entire neighbourhoods were deemed unsafe, and large parts of the city centre destroyed. As devastating as the earthquakes were, even they couldn’t destroy the spirit of the city and its people. With resilience and determination, the rebuild began – and a new, modern city started to emerge. Since then, more and more people have

discovered Christchurch is an excellent place to live and work. As a result, the local population has grown steadily, recently surpassing 400,000. Significant growth in nearby towns Selwyn and Waimakariri districts has added even more energy to the region, helping to turn Christchurch into a hub of activity and opportunity.

A BEAUTIFUL PLACE

While construction and new housing developments are now a common sight across much of New Zealand, no other city boasts as many newly-built subdivisions as Christchurch; as of March 2022, more than $2 billion of new housing construction had been approved over the previous 12 months. These modern houses, with quality heating and insulation in well-designed neighbourhoods, make great homes and ⊲

WILDLIFE WATCHING IN KAIKŌURA

Fur seals, dolphins, blue penguins and the magnificent giant sperm whale… when it comes to marine life Kaikōura is New Zealand’s mecca. From whale watching flights , albatross cruises and dolphin diving, there’s no shortage of wildlife tours in Kaikōura. Just a couple of hours’ drive up the coast from Christchurch, this is your chance to get a closer view of these uniquely beautiful marine mammals up close; hop on a purpose-built Whale Watch boat or paddle around on a wildlife kayaking tour guided by the experts. Swimming with seals is incredible; while they may not be the friendliest of creatures on land, for some reason they think people in masks, snorkels and wetsuits on a guided tour are great toys to play with! Alternatively, go for the experience of a lifetime on a dolphin swimming tour, where you snorkel with a cheeky pod of dusky dolphins, known to be one of the most social and interactive species of dolphin in the world.

The award-winning Maruia Hot Springs, a natural sulphur spring located in the Lewis Pass national reserve, and Hot Tubs Omarama, nestled amongst serene Mackenzie country scenery, are just two places that should be high on your list. Closer to Christchurch – just 15 minutes out of the city centre – is He Puna Taimoana, hot pools right by the sea: a perfect stop if you’ve been on your feet at the show all day. LARNACH CASTLE

As Aotearoa’s only castle, Dunedin’s Larnach Castle holds a special place in the hearts of history buffs. It was built in 1871 by businessman and politician William Larnach for his first wife, Eliza, as their dream home. No expense was spared in the construction of the couple’s grand homestead, with more than 200 labourers working on the castle’s shell over three years. The interior took a further 12 years to be completed, with master craftsmen called in from Europe to oversee the décor. The surrounding grounds are also exquisite, with the castle sitting amongst seven acres of beautifully maintained gardens - rated by the NZ Gardens Trust as a Garden of International Significance.

GETTING THEIR WINGS Danielle Street’s childhood was filled with happy memories of travelling with her grandparents in an old Bedford; She tells MCD Editor Catherine Milford she’s on the road to providing the same experience for her own daughters.

D

anielle Street vividly remembers the delight she felt as a child when she went away on camping trips in ‘Spinning Wheels’, the 1972 CF Bedford with her grandparents. “I remember always looking forward to it; it was so exciting,” she recalls. “There would be lunch, chocolate biscuits, then we’d go out for a walk, and I’d go and explore the campgrounds, some of which had playgrounds, which were loads of fun. Often there would be other kids too, so I’d make friends.” While Danielle remembers the bed being over the top of the cab in the Bedford, Danielle’s grandparents, Jenny and Denys Street, have plenty of memories of their own of Danielle’s adventures. “They often tell me stories I was too young to remember,” says Danielle. “In one of them, I was about three and we were camping at Maruia Springs. Gran had sent me to use the toilet by myself, but when I hadn’t come back after a few minutes, she came looking for me – only to find I’d pulled every strip of toilet roll off every roll in the building! It took her hours to re-roll every roll and return them all to the campsite bathroom.” Jenny and Denys have been members of NZMCA for 27 years, and Danielle remembers the excitement of meeting other club members on the road when she was little. “Seeing the NZMCA wings on another caravan or motorhome was like a secret you shared,” she says. “I remember the special feeling of being one of the people who had ‘the wings’; when we were driving, if we passed someone else with wings, you’d give them a wave. It’s very personal – those wings bind you together with others who have them too.” She also remembers attending NZMCA events and getting special passes for overnight stays. “It was such a great feeling – I felt like a VIP!” Although the Streets’ Bedford camper was upgraded to various different campervans and caravans over the years, Danielle continued to enjoy holidays with her grandparents for most of her childhood – and Jenny and Denys still enjoy regular trips in their own RV, now with a small child in tow! Now Danielle is grown up and has a family of her own, it was the most natural step in the world to get a caravan and give her own kids similar childhood experiences to her own. “Getting a caravan was my idea,” says Danielle, who has two daughters, Indiana (two and a half ) and Akira (seven months) with partner Jayden. “We did a bit of tenting over the years, but when Akira was born it was time to upgrade – I wasn’t going to tent with two kids under two!” ⊲

Having a caravan means the family can get up and go whenever they please

Officially a three-berth, the Zephyr has been modified to suit four people

46

After initially considering a pop-top, Danielle and Jayden decided they wanted something that didn’t require much setup, so settled on a caravan. “We started thinking about what we wanted,” says Danielle. “We wanted to be able to pull up on the side of the road for lunch while we were travelling, and to have something we could park up and leave for a couple of days while we went exploring. We also like the idea of being able to go off-grid and survive without having a powered site.” Eventually the family decided on Zephyr, a 1977 four-berth Zephyr 410; officially a three-berth, electrician Jayden modified it to be self-contained and with the electrical certificate for four people. The family took their first trip when Akira was just four weeks old; the baby slept in her pram bassinet while Indie took the third bed. “I love outdoor activities like surfing and mountain biking; it’s not that easy to do at the moment with two little ones, but as they grow, I want to be able to take the caravan and enjoy the country and the outdoors as much as possible. Travelling with a caravan is a really wonderful family activity that everyone can do, that isn’t ⊲

influenced by any outside issues. It’s something we can do together that gives us all a bit of time out, with no pressures. If we want to just get up and go somewhere with Zephyr, there isn’t much that can stop us.” While Zephyr originally had to be connected to get power because of her age, Jayden and Danielle have done quite a bit of renovation to update and modernise the caravan. They have installed solar on the roof, added a battery and controller, and replaced the fridge with a solar fridge/freezer that opens from the top, providing an extra 15 litres of space – essential when travelling with small kids. “Caravan life is perfect for us. Everybody loves it!” laughs Danielle. “Indie adores our caravan trips; when we’re driving she asks us where the caravan is. We have to explain it’s behind us; she just can’t see it! She loves bringing people inside to show them her bed, and she’s really into her books. We’re teaching her to play cards too – she’s learning that these things are what we do when we’re in the caravan. Caravan life has just as many benefits for Indie as it does for the parents. “Indie loves herbal tea, so she has a special strawberry herbal tea just for the caravan. She’s also tried marshmallows around the campfire; she understands the fire is hot, so if we meet up with other kids who are doing melted marshmallows for the first time, she’ll tell everyone how it’s done, and how to stay away from the hot fire and get Mum ⊲ or Dad to get you a marshmallow!”

Jayden and Indie enjoying some traditional camping activities

While the family has now settled happily into caravan life, what wasn’t quite so certain initially was whether or not they should join the NZMCA. “At first I was a bit worried the NZMCA was going to be just for people like my grandparents. For us, it was important that we went to places where we could find families so the girls could have the experiences I had when I was a kid, of meeting little friends in campsites and having those wonderful holiday friendships,” says Danielle, who recalls many happy memories of playing in playgrounds and enjoying the freedom of camping life. Eventually the decision was made to join earlier this year, in no small part because NZMCA is very welcoming of pets, and has plenty of dog-friendly campgrounds. “We’ve got a five year old Huntaway, and it can be really hard finding places you can take the dog when we’re travelling. Now we’ve joined NZMCA, we know we have complete flexibility to go wherever we want, because they have dog-friendly sites all over New Zealand. We don’t have to be so structured in our planning; we know we’ll find somewhere.”

50

Danielle is now looking forward to continuing the traditions set when she travelled with her grandparents, and watching her kids grow and learn, just as she did a generation ago. “We’ve gone on a few trips now, and we’re finding that using the NZMCA app means there are loads of places to stay, no matter where we are. As we travel, we are meeting more and more families too, which is exactly what we were looking for.” Danielle and Jayden are very happy with their decision, and are looking forward to taking the family away as often as possible. They are also starting to look at upgrading their caravan as Akira gets older and becomes too big for her bassinet. “Just getting on the road with the caravan is such a wonderful, exciting experience for the whole family – we love it,” says Danielle. “We’re so pleased we’ve become part of the NZMCA family too; before we joined, I remember being in Timaru with Jayden and we were following a van that had the NZMCA ‘wings’ logo on it. He’s so excited now that we finally have wings of our own!” 
