EXPLORE | A-Z OF THE WAIKATO
A-Z OF THE
WAIKATO From natural wonders like hot water beaches and magical caves to galleries, gardens and more, the Waikato has lots on offer for motorhomers. Here’s a look at some of the highlights, from A right through to Z ARANUI CAVE
Part of the Waitomo Cave network, Aranui Cave is a place of awe-inspiring beauty. Discovered in 1910, it was formed on an earthquake fault. Rain water seeps through the limestone above, forming masses of fragile stalactites. Sparkling in shades of pink, white and fawn, these natural wonders adorn almost every corner of the roof and walls of the cave, and are a sight to behold. Upon entering the cave, your guide will take you along safe boardwalks into narrow chambers to see these beautiful formations. To visit the cave, book your tickets at waitomo.com.

BRIDAL VEIL FALLS
Located 28km from Raglan on the Kauroa-Kāwhia Road, the Bridal Veil Falls track provides a lovely walk through native forest. The track is set within the 217-hectare Wairēinga Scenic Reserve, and follows the Pakoka River. It’s an easy 15-minute walk to the elegant cascade, where you’ll find two viewing platforms that provide a spectacular vista of the falls and surrounding countryside. Looking down to the base of the waterfall, you will see soft sandstone rocks, worn away by the water to form a large amphitheatre. A steep set of steps leads down to the bottom of the falls. From here there is another magnificent view, directly across the pool and up at the falls. Access to the falls is via Te Mata Road off the Hamilton/Raglan Highway (SH23). Turn left into Kāwhia Road, 1km past Te Mata and travel another 4km to the car park.

Waikato River Trails
CYCLE TRAILS
One of the best ways to explore the Waikato region is to park up your motorhome and get out and about by bike. There are hundreds of kilometres of trails to discover, offering riders a close-up look at the region’s picturesque scenery and fascinating past. The Waikato River Trails take you through native forest, past hydro dams and along suspension bridges. Or to see more of the city, try the Hamilton City River Rides & Walks, which runs for 10km through central Hamilton and along the banks of the Waikato River.

This cool eatery is fitted out in the décor of the era with authentic vintagestyle booths and furnishings. The menu is just as cool, with meals like the Texas Hangover (toast, bacon, eggs, pancakes, tater tots and maple), waffles, bacon butties, loaded fries, hot dogs and more. There’s even a ‘Jacinda Burger’ made with New Zealand lamb and haloumi. Check it out for yourself at jukeboxdiner.net.nz.

KAWHIA HOT WATER BEACH
Less crowded than Coromandel’s Hot Water Beach, hot springs can be found at Kawhia’s Ocean Beach for two hours either side of low tide. Steeped in history, Kawhia is where the Tainui waka (one of the original canoes carrying the first Polynesians) came to rest after its epic trans-Pacific voyage. Today it is a sleepy little spot, far from the madding crowds and all the better for it. But be warned – because this is a black sand beach, it can really heat up in summer, so don’t forget your shoes. To get to the beach, drive to the end of Ocean Beach Road, park in the carpark and walk down over the dunes to the beach. If you’re not sure where to dig to gain access to the steaming seams, a friendly local will show you the way.
LAVENDER BACKYARD GARDEN

There’s also a 1937 Bugatti that’s currently under restoration, plus loads of cool memorabilia including a Big Tree garage complete with signs and tools. NGARUNUI BEACH
Also known as Ocean Beach, Main Beach or Wainui Beach, Ngarunui is the main sandy swimming beach in Raglan. This magnificent black sand stretch is ideal for swimming, perfect for learning to surf, and also great for simply lying in the sun. There is an area patrolled by surf lifesavers (October to April) immediately in front of the access trail to the beach. The western end is the best place to swim and surf, while the eastern end provides a nice spot for walking. There is also an area of about 1.5km that is leash-free for dogs (but please beware of hot sand during summer).

Choose from a variety of experiences, such as a daytime guided tour of the ancient forest, or a dusk-to-dark experience where you can listen for kiwi and see glowworms. The sanctuary is at 99 Tari Road, Pukeatua – about 30 minutes’ drive south of Cambridge. Find out more at sanctuarymountain.co.nz.
TE WAIHOU WALKWAY – BLUE SPRING
The Te Waihou Walkway and Blue Spring is located in South Waikato near Putaruru. The walk to the springs follows a track alongside the Waihou River, through wetlands, across rolling pastoral land and features views of small waterfalls, native bush and the famous Blue Spring with glimpses of trout along the way. The spring is fed from the Mamaku Plateau, where the water takes up to 100 years to filter through; the resulting water is so pure and clean that it produces a beautiful blue colour and is virtually clear. The Blue Spring walk takes about one and a half hours each way, starting from Whites Road (SH 28), near Putaruru. There is also a shorter walk, 15 minutes each way, to the Blue Spring, accessed from nearby Leslie Road. See waikatonz.com for more.

FEATURE | BENEFITS OF OWNING AN RV
DISCOVER THE JOY OF RV OWNERSHIP Here are some great reasons why owning an RV is the best way to discover New Zealand
Kids love RV holidays!
T
here has never been a better time to travel New Zealand by RV. With our borders closed to international tourists, Kiwis have the rare opportunity to explore our country without quite as many people around. And by doing so, we help support our tourism community, and the townships that rely heavily on visitor spending. But there are many more reasons why owning an RV is a great idea… here are a few to consider.
TRAVEL IN COMFORT
RV travel is all about doing things on your terms. That means you can stop and stretch your legs when it suits, pull over for a comfortable sleep if you’re tired, or make your favourite snack and a hot drink along the way. What could be better?
FREEDOM TO EXPLORE
One of the best parts about travelling in your own RV has to be the freedom and
flexibility to go where you choose, when you choose. Your accommodation is always sorted, you can take your time travelling, and if you fancy a last-minute change of destination, it’s no hassle.
remember to keep it simple and fun. Toasting marshmallows, hot chocolates under the stars, discovering new places, and sleeping in an RV… all memories that kids will treasure.
MAKE SOME EXTRA CASH
IT DOUBLES AS A SPARE ROOM
There are several trusted businesses now operating that can help you rent out your RV during those times when you’re not using it. Mighway, Share a Camper, and Camplify are all worth checking out if you fancy putting your RV to work instead of having it take up room on the driveway when you’re not travelling.
KIDS LOVE IT
There is just no better way to get the children off their computers, out of their rooms, and having a great time than heading off on holiday in an RV. And if a friend can come too, even better. Plan plenty of stops along the way, and
Got family or friends coming to stay? Your RV is perfect as a spare room for extra guests. What’s more, it can become your own quiet escape for those days when you just need a little peace and quiet.
PACKING IS EASY
Once you’ve set up your RV with your favourite travel basics, packing for holidays becomes a matter of a quick top-up, and off you go.
LIVE MINIMALLY
When you travel by RV, you soon realise just how many material possessions you can do without. And when you’re surrounded by
Fancy a cuppa? Let’s stop here
nature’s beauty on your travels, you soon become aware of the impact our ‘stuff’ has on the environment, making you think twice before buying so much of it.
BE PART OF A COMMUNITY
Being a part of New Zealand’s motorhoming community is a fantastic way to meet new, like-minded people. From quick carpark chats to motorhome rallies and events, motorhomers are a friendly bunch and newbies are always welcomed. You’re sure to come away with helpful motorhoming and travel tips, memorable experiences, and great friendships.
IMAGES SUPPLIED
HOME AWAY FROM HOME
Travelling in your own RV means always sleeping in your own bed, having everything the way you like it, and never being without the travel essentials that provide those extra comforts of home.
BE MORE ACTIVE
New Zealand has so many wonderful walking paths, beaches and tramps (not to mention beautiful cities), waiting to be explored, and a motorhome is the perfect way to do it. Just park, slip on your walking shoes, and get discovering!
SAVE MONEY
Forget expensive motels and airfares; an RV eliminates the need for them all. Many motorhomers find other great ways to save, too, such as getting together with other travellers for meals and enjoying the simpler (and cheaper) things in life.
THE DOG CAN COME TOO!
A holiday isn’t the same when you have to book your beloved furry friends into a boarding facility first (often at great expense too). But with your own motorhome, your canine companion can join the adventure.
A GOOD INVESTMENT
If you keep your RV well maintained and serviced, you may well recover a good chunk of the purchase price when the time comes to sell. In fact, some caravans are in such hot demand right now that you could get back more than you paid for it if you do any restoration work.
ENJOY THE SPUR OF THE MOMENT
Ever have one of those weekends when the sun is shining, the work is done, and you just feel like heading off? With your own RV, you can take advantage of those moments - no planning required! Just throw in what you need, lock the front door, and head off on whatever adventure takes your fancy.

7 TIPS ON BUYING AN RV It’s easy to make costly mistakes when you buy a new or used vehicle. Here are a few tips on getting it right.
W
hen it comes to spending your hardearned cash on the RV (recreational vehicle) of your dreams, it pays to do your homework. Many is the tale of woe from a first-time buyer who failed to read the fine print; remained blissfully unaware of government regulations; or found out too late why that incredible bargain buy wasn’t a bargain at all. Before you buy a lemon, take your time and run through our handy checklist.
1. MOTORHOME, CARAVAN, OR CAMPER?
The first question you’ll need to answer is around what type of RV is right for you. A motorhome will suit those whose preference is for a combination vehicle and mobile home; the freedom camper; a person who values maximum manoeuvrability in campgrounds, and anyone who wants to set up camp with minimum fuss. The downside is that
motorhomes – by virtue of their size – can be difficult to park in urban areas. Caravans can go most places a motorhome can go; and they can also be used for freedom camping providing the driver is competent towing and at getting in and out of awkward places. You will of course need a suitable tow vehicle and set up time is usually a little longer than with a motorhome and less convenient when it’s raining. However, once camp is set up, the tow vehicle is free for jaunts without the need to unhook power and pack everything away. Camper trailers are not as popular in New Zealand as across the Tasman and overseas, although this is changing slowly, as purchasers weigh up the value for money, easy set up and off-road capacity of these compact vehicles.
2. KNOW YOUR TOW
Matching your tow vehicle to your caravan or trailer is of high importance. Get it wrong and the result could be disastrous. Check laden and unladen weights carefully and ask the manufacturer which tow vehicle they recommend; or go online and read suitable vehicle tests. Ask if electronic stability and anti-sway devices have been installed.
3. MAKE A WISH LIST
Make your dreams come true by creating a careful list of all the features you need and those you want. Do you need a good-sized shower and internal toilet, or would an amenity tent with camping shower work and afford more room and a better internal layout? Work through every detail thoroughly – size of table needed, size of beds. How many beds? Think about comfort and privacy. Will you be entertaining friends? How much internal seating will you need? How big is the galley? Do you need a large fridge/
freezer, or will an additional chilly bin do? What about storage, space for your toys, roof-racks or bike racks? Use our checklist over the page to help you keep track.
4. FUTURE-PROOF YOUR VEHICLE
Right now, your RV might suit you to the ground, but what about further down the track? Will you need larger fresh and grey water tanks, more beds, a better bathroom, an additional awning, solar panels, a more advanced electronics package or a larger generator? What new features can be added as time and money permit? What about a tow-ball, bike racks and larger gas bottles?
5. READ THE FINE PRINT
What – exactly – does the warranty cover you for? What modifications does the manufacturer specify can be made (and by whom) without making the warranty null and void? Does the vehicle come with a comprehensive service record? Are
gas and electrical certifications up to date, and have you been given the paperwork as a record? Can the warranty be transferred?
6. DO YOUR HOMEWORK
Read reviews (we’ve got lots online at nzmcd.co.nz) look at online forums, join specialist clubs and ask current or previous owners. If you have an RV centre nearby, pop in for a chat about what to look for, and ask which vehicles come in most frequently, or need costly repairs. Most specialists are only too happy to offer impartial opinions, especially if they are likely to be asked to provide pre-buy checks, service or parts down the line. Always buy from a reputable dealer.
7. TRY BEFORE YOU BUY
When you’ve narrowed down your choice of vehicles; see if it possible to spend even a small amount of time – preferably overnighting in it – so you can get a real feel for how it will suit your needs.
