Wat Phnom Here at last, the latest edition of your trusty and timely guide to what’s happening in the streets, shops and beyond in Cambodia’s always happening and vibrant capital

Welcome to

Phnom Penh

As we go to press in late September the rainy season has well and truly set in, though the flash floods are fairly predictable, with heavy afternoon torrents that hit hard and mostly clear fast. By November, the sun will blaze hard once more, so why not take refuge in one of Phnom Penh’s many comfy cafés and use our guides to bring yourself up to date with what the capital has to offer. Here you will find the most detailed listings of shops, markets, galleries, spas, activities, clinics, hotels, guesthouses and travel information, together with articles on a wide range of topics. We give you an overview of your shopping options, whether markets, boutiques or malls, look at what’s available by way of leisure activities, give you some tips for staying healthy plus a brief summary of the city’s accommodation options. Please refer to our sister publication, DRiNKiNG & DiNiNG, for up-to-the-minute information about the city’s cafés, restaurants, bars and related activities. Look for the Visa logo in our listings - these outlets accept Visa cards for payment

How to use this guide... Phnom Penh OUT & ABOUT is divided into several sections, each covering specific topics such as Shopping, Leisure, Travel, Health & Fitness and so forth. In each section we aim to provide a general overview of what the city has to offer to visitors and residents by way of shops, leisure activities, travel options, spas, accommodation and more. You will also find maps of the main markets and of the city itself in the middle of this book. In each section we also include directory listings of relevant businesses, further divided into subcategories where appropriate. Paid listings are indicated in red text. Please check the legend at the start of each listing section for a list of symbols indicating opening times and so on. The listings also show a map reference relating to the main city maps. Be sure also to check our various feature pages for information about using your mobile phone, connecting to the internet, bus travel, border crossings, flight schedules and more. Enjoy your stay in Cambodia and please feel free to give us feedback – email us at info@cambodiapocketguide.com or leave a comment on our page at facebook.com/pocketguidecambodia

GENERAL iNFORMATiON

Holidays Cambodia is a country that enjoys an abundance of public holidays with more than 25 scheduled annually. During important religious holidays, which can spread over several days, Phnom Penh empties as Khmers head back to the provinces to spend time with their families and expats seek some solace outside the chaos of city life. This often means the capital operates on shut down mode, with the majority of shops, restaurants, bars, banks and other businesses closing their doors. If you’re thinking of travelling during a public holiday, then make sure you have pre-booked your accommodation and transport as buses fill quickly and private taxis are sparse and hike up their prices significantly. During the lifetime of this issue of OUT & ABOUT, Cambodia will enjoy a relatively small number of holidays, though there are in fact four separate ones and they are worth noting in your calendar. Details appear below. Pchum Ben is one of the biggest holidays in the Cambodian calendar and this year falls on September 30, and October 01 and 02. It is a major religious festival that sees Cambodians return to their homes to pay respect to deceased relatives. During this week, expect businesses and many shops and restaurants to close. Commemoration Day of King Father Norodom Sihanouk falls on October 15. It marks the King Father’s death on the same day in 2012. Paris Peace Agreement Day lands on October 23 and marks the day in 1991 when the UN-backed international agreement officially announced the end of the civil war and saw Cambodia become a democracy. This is followed by a holiday on October 29 for the King’s Coronation Day. November 9 is Independence Day and November 13, 14 and 15 will once again see the Water Festival (Bon Om Touk) upon us, although at time of writing it is still uncertain whether or not the customary boat races take place in Phnom Penh. International Human Rights Day is marked with a holiday on December 10. Christmas is not celebrated with public holidays in Cambodia so it’s business as usual on Christmas Day. January 1 is taken off for New Year and January 7 is Victory Over Genocide Day..

Getting around

You’re in a new city, and unsure of your bearings, but never fear, everything you need is in one of our guides. Here are a few tips to get you started:

ORIENTATION: As capital cities go, Phnom Penh is relatively compact, and most businesses catering to tourists can be found in the area bounded by the riverfront and Monivong Blvd, and from Wat Phnom south to Mao Tse Toung Blvd (with the exception of the Russian market). See our Tourist MAP for more details. WHERE TO STAY: Phnom Penh has literally thousands of hotel rooms from $2 to $2,000. Budget travellers might seek out St.172 and 258, though there are also a wealth of “boutique” hotels around the $50 mark offering good value for money especially compared to regional cities. GETTING AROUND: The easiest ways to get around are by foot, moto or tuk-tuk. Motos can be found all over town and cost from 2,000R (US$0.50) for a short journey, with a premium at night. Tuk-tuks are a little more expensive, with short trips costing about $1.50 (about 6,000R), but they hold more people and offer better protection against the sun, wind and rain. There are also two metered taxi firms with prices comparable to tuk-tuks - see our Travel section for details or ask your hotel or guesthouse to help. FOOD AND DRINK: Phnom Penh has a plethora of bars and restaurants catering to most tastes and budgets, and with a surprising number of cuisines available. A meal for two can cost anywhere from $5 to $100 or more, while a glass of beer ranges from 50c at a local beer garden or backpacker pub to upwards of $5 in the more expensive hotels. See our DRiNKiNG  & DiNiNG guide for more details.

ViSiTORS

code of conduct

If you want to be a responsible visitor to the Kingdom, here's some tips... You’re in Cambodia, the sun is shining, the people are welcoming and warm, you’ve befriended your tuk tuk driver, smiling kids are keen to play and joke with you, life is great. That’s the beauty of the Kingdom, it’s so easy to feel at home and comfortable in your surroundings … too easy. It’s important, however, to remember you are in a country that takes real pride in it’s culture and customs. What may seem a harmless act or gesture by you can be hugely offensive to the local people, or even illegal in some cases. We’re sure you want to represent yourself, your country, and all foreigners coming to Cambodia in the best possible way, so below are a few pointers to follow to make sure you are a responsible visitor to the Kingdom of Wonder:

Dress Code

Monuments

When in a city or town you are not on the beach, so revealing clothing, super-short shorts, bikini tops, walking around with no shirt on … it’s just not cool folks, and quite offensive to the locals. Ladies, if you are going to a sacred site such as a temple then you need to make sure you are covered to below the knees and across the shoulders. Dress appropriately people.

Cambodia’s monuments, statues, temples and pagodas are old. Touching them doesn’t change the way they look for the better, and leaning or sitting on fragile structures could do some real damage and get you into serious trouble. Look, take photos, but don’t touch. Be careful with your backpacks, and anything you are carrying which could lead to damage.

16 OCTOBER 2016 - JANUARY 2017 - where to go and what to do in Phnom Penh!

Smoking “There are no foreign lands. It is the traveler only who is foreign.” Robert Louis Stevenson

A law was passed recently banning smoking in public places, and is expected to come in to full force during the lifespan of this book. Chances are you are familiar with such laws back home anyway, so no biggie. Angkor park has been a smoke free site since 2012 and if caught smoking you may well be fined. During the hot dry season a stray butt can also be a fire starter.

Sacred Sites

Restricted Area

Sacred sites in Cambodia are as sacred as they come. Remember when you visit that any locals or practising buddhists are probably not on a sightseeing tour. Keep the noise to an absolute minimum, talk only if necessary, put your phone on silent, don’t disturb others. It’s kind of like a trip to the cinema, but you’ll come out with much more good karma on your side.

Cambodian authorities take restricted areas very seriously, from entry to photography. Most restricted areas are designated so for your own safety, particularly in the Angkor park where collapsing temples can be extremely dangerous. Military and government properties are simply not to be messed with. And those landmine signs are there for a reason.

Food & Money for Children

Monks

It’s the tough one for a lot of visitors, and even the expats here sometimes. How could you possibly say no? But you have to. Giving money or food to children begging on the streets is counteractive to the work being done to get them off the streets and into schools. If it helps you feel better about saying no, a lot of the time things aren’t quite as they appear.

Monks are highly respected and revered in Cambodia. They aren’t a tourist attraction or photo opportunity. If you want to take a photo of a monk ask for permission first. When talking with a monk make sure that you are positioned below them, even if it means sitting on the ground. Ladies, never touch a monk, and do your very best not to stand or sit too close to one.

SHOPPiNG

Shop ‘til you drop Shopping isn’t the first thing that springs to mind in connection with Cambodia’s capital, but Phnom Penh is fast becoming a retail hub with ultra modern malls, design emporiums and artisan boutiques! Taking their lead from gifts of nature à la Indochina since 2008, Bambou Indochine products are made from, yep, you guessed it, bamboo! The boutique specialises in natural fibres, including 100% cotton, dry-fit and silk- a much welcome break from sweat-inducing synthetics- so pick your favourites and breath easy! International-standard quality and head-turning designs will keep those souvenir togs and resortwear distinctly chic beyond Cambodia. Psst, they do international delivery! For a glimpse of Cambodia’s lost heritage, save the trip to the Museum for another day, and instead raid the treasure trove of lacquer, wood and stone carvings, ceramics, silk works and garments, not to mention quality Cambodian silverwork, in Artisans d’Angkor. And all in the name of a good cause: improving livelihoods by providing training and work for over 900 rural Cambodian craftsman who are employed by the social enterprise. Feeling the heat? Treat yourself to a take-home pampering at Bodia Nature, with its all-natural range of products, including balms to soothe and invigorate heat parched and insect ravaged skins. Melt away the fatigue

(or is that dust?) with rice scrubs good enough to eat, then discover the magic in traditional herbal compresses and lush massage oils. Unwind in the comfort of your home away from home or head to Bodia Spa, your

Artisans d’Angkor cocoon of calm in the city. Grab some natural mosquito repellent on your way out! Hummingbird, just off the bustling backpacker area of St.172, has a beautiful selection of quality boutique fashions including their own ‘Originals’ range. Showcased in a laid back urban boutique setting, you’ll find dresses for all occasions, casual daywear perfect for tourists and travellers, and a beautiful range of jewellery and accessories. Want your goods to do some good? Dazzle, delight and distribute

your dollar to craftswomen from disadvantaged backgrounds with eco-friendly cottons, children’s toys and more from NGO Daughters of Cambodia. Need some pep in your step? Family-owned Starling Farm are top producers of the famous Kampot Pepper and carry other protected Geographical Indication products to tingle taste buds back home. If all that browsing has got you worked up into a lather, follow your nose to Senteurs d’Angkor. Their handmade soaps and scents are an affordable luxury—especially if the sun and soap at your hotel are making your skin see red! Let the senteur (that’s scent to you and me!) from their spice and aromatic section set you adrift in fields of fragrant jasmine, orchid or earthy bowers of cinnamon. Did we mention the tantalising local honey, coffee and rice brandy in their delicatessen? If taking your chances to cross the road in Phnom Penh isn’t enough of a thrill, visit Citadel (St.110) for all your daredevil needs! Hand-forging blades sharper and more elegant than an Armani suit since 1999, with no two items alike, there’s no better place to get those samurai swords your wall has been waiting for! Or why not say

it with swords?! Best of luck getting through customs. For discounted branded products manufactured in Cambodia, cruise Sihnoukville Blvd. Had your fill of salads, smoothies and sticky rice featuring Southeast Asia’s ubiquitous fruit? Sample Spanish fashion favourite, Mango instead—prices at their Phnom Penh outlet are a real treat. Housed in a colonial-style villa, Axara oozes Parisian cool. Inside it’s a Narnia of mirrors, lighting and club music— pause to peruse attire for all climates, from winterwear to beachwear. Once you’ve got your wardrobe together, why not add some finishing touches at Singaporean Pedro? Smart timeless shoes, belts, handbags, wallets and ties are their speciality. Wexport brings together brands like Dockers, Gap and Benetton across four floors at a fraction of the RRP—if you can’t get no (retail) satisfaction here, you’re beyond help. If new-to-you is plenty new enough, check out Lost’n’Found Vintage Store on St.63. Carrying a hand-picked selection of threads and accessories fresh from Italy, France and Hong Kong, with new items arriving quicker than bags on the priority baggage carousel and at a snip of what you’d

pay back home, why not unearth some buried treasure today? If you fancy giving the kiss of life to once loved materials, hit Smateria. Get all the elegance of Italian design, with the added durability and cool of Khmer craftsmanship which revives local fabrics, all without the hefty footprint. Quirky kids’ backpacks, shoulder bags and fishing net accessories as standard. Collect kudos on the corner of St.51 and St.360 for tracking down genuine Cambodian silk (precious little of all silk on sale is gathered and produced in the Kingdom) at Tabitha. From bedding to tablecloths, bags to shawls, if its gorgeous silk you want, they’ve got it. Double kudos for contributing to Tabitha’s programme teaching artisans the fast disappearing craft of working silk, and other valuable skills. Sorya Mall’s five floors are as jammed with genuine electronics, branded sportswear and entertainment outlets as they are with overzealous Khmer youth. Enough said. If you can’t be without the latest iPhone, pick one up at authorised Apple retailer, iOne in Sovanna Mall on St.271. Need a centrally located supermarket, American-style ice cream or body building products,

(as if shopping wasn’t enough of a workout!)? Check Paragon Mall, which caters for all three. If shopping centres make your head spin, City Mall is no labyrinth; each floor is conveniently themed: beauty and fashion, shoes and handbags, electronics and toys. Still haven’t found what you’re looking for? Find Couleurs d’Asie, a hidden gem of a design emporium on St.240 and you’ve won half the battle. Once inside, marvel at the astounding range of custom made home textiles in silk, organza and cotton, not to mention its suite of wellness products, jewellery, prêt-à-porter, bags... If you can’t find that perfect pressie here, give up and buy some rice brandy. We’ve saved the biggest for last: juggernaut, Aeon Mall. Besides all the usual suspects from Asia and Europe, there’s a bowling alley, 4D cinema, $1.90 store and... an ice rink! Getting your shopping fix in Phnom Penh is not always a walk in the park (bonus points if you walk in any parks, by the way!) ; although the city is compact, highlights are scattered and sky high temperatures take their toll—have a good city map and refreshments handy and, unlike the traffic, take it slow and steady!

What to see? Where to shop?

BRAND SHOPPiNG

Big on brands? You can always fake it, but with so many authentic retailers, why not invest in some top quality products? The last few years has seen a number of official outlets open in the city. Here’s just a few. Phnom Penh’s reputation as a place to shop is developing quickly. As well as homegrown retailers, big brands from countries such as Malaysia, Singapore, France and America are landing in the city by the bucketload. For starters, head straight for Sihanouk Blvd, the city’s answer to Oxford Street in London or Singapore’s Orchid Road. Much loved Spanish brand Mango is a must for lovers of fashion (44 Sihanouk Blvd). Prices are a little more reasonable than its other Asian stores, but you may still need to bring the plastic. Axara of Paris, housed in a renovated colonial-style villa, transports you into a world of club music, mirrors and bright lighting. The store is stocked with small and medium standard European, UK and US sizes, with international price tags to match. You’ll find a range to suit most climates from winter to beachwear, as well as a range of shoes and accessories. The motto of VNC (31C Sihanouk Blvd) is that little things make a big difference. Bringing current season bags, purses and shoes imported from Malaysia at affordable prices, the emphasis here is on combining fun

and fashion and the classy white décor and sofas make trying on a treat. Pedro (13 Sihanouk Blvd) is another well-known Singaporean retailer, selling smart classical shoes, handbags, belts, wallets and ties with Pedro

fashionable twists. They regularly bring in the latest styles, and have a large range of choices for both men and women. And last but by no means least, don’t miss out on the authentic trendy Parisian brands at Le Marais found in the unmissable Aeon Mall. If you forgot to pack enough shoes, you’ll find a range of comfortable footwear for men, women and kids at Bata Shoes (also at 84 St.143) and internationally-renowned shoe brand Skechers (46 Sihanouk Blvd) close to Independence Monument.

24 OCTOBER 2016 - JANUARY 2017 - where to go and what to do in Phnom Penh!

Puma

The authorised Adidas outlet store (Sihanouk Blvd) offers a very wide variety of products, ranging from the casual running shoe to the performance soccer shoes. You can find many lifestyle products that are of high branded quality and always authentic. A new player in town is US sportswear giant Nike, with their first official outlet opening on Monivong Blvd mid-2016. Everything from the modern Air Max range to a huge selection of sports clothing is available, all housed in a classic urban store. True Brands (Mao Tse Tung Blvd) stocks high-quality international sports and lifestyle brands, all guaranteed originals, and have a wide range of premium products at the best possible price. There seems to almost always be a sale of some sort going on, so definitely give this one a look. Puma (Sihanouk Blvd) is a well known German multinational company with three major product categories - athletic footwear, clothing, and accessories. They have a great range of original products for all sports enthusiasts, such as authentic football shirts and running shoes. Aeon Mall is the best choice if you want a westernised mall. Offering a new lifestyle to the people of the

region, the large-scale shopping centre is the first of its kind in Cambodia and boasts several stories of stores, restaurants and entertainment. If it’s electronics you’re after, the Canon shop on Sihanouk Blvd is a multi-storied multimedia delight. Nokia has a retail outlet just down the road close to authorised Apple resellers iOne, who can also be found in Canadia Tower (St.110) and at Sovanna Mall. Fake watches are available in every market in the city, but if you want something that might last more than a few days, better to pay more for the real deal. Genuine watches can be snapped up at the Swatch store (37 Russian Federation Blvd), while Rado, Omega and Seiko products are waiting for you at boutiques in the Cambodiana Hotel (Sisowath Quay). Nagaworld stocks the super exclusive Mont Blanc, Rolex, Jaeger-LeCoultre and Piaget watches through an official distributor, and a Cartier outlet is also to be found there. To make sure you’ll be looking good in your holiday photos, authenticated Revlon products are available at the Revlon Shop in Sorya Shopping Centre and Sydney Shopping Centre.

SHOPPiNG FOR A CAUSE

Ethical retail Phnom Penh has many wonderful not-for-profit organisations whose programmes are funded or partially funded by stores selling their products. So why not spend and feel good about it at the same time? Whether you’re hunting for gifts for your family or a memento of your time spent here, there are a few special places it might pay to check out— we’ve rounded up a selection of the very best for you to get along to. On St. 13 is Friends ‘n’ Stuff, a funky little store specialising in bags, clothing, jewellery and accessories. All the products in store are made by local families who come from a variety of difficult circumstances. Their creations feature bold colours and quirky designs, and are often crafted using recycled materials. A little further along St. 13 you’ll find the Artisans d’Angkor Boutique showroom. Artisans d’Angkor is a social enterprise founded in the hopes of providing training and employment to rural Cambodians. It now employs over 1300 people, and over 900 of these are artisans. The Phnom Penh boutique store showcases beautiful gifts, decorations, artworks and garments crafted by talented Cambodian artisans from around the country. A few steps from the Russian Market, on the corner of St. 450 and 155, is the Rajana Association store. Rajana’s mission is to reignite the creative spark doused by the Khmer Rouge regime. This Cambodian-run

not-for-profit organisation provides training and employment opportunities for local people, pairing traditional skills with contemporary design. With unique jewellery pieces, bags and other accessories, fellas might struggle to drag their partners away from this one.

Artisans d’Angkor Daughters of Cambodia’s boutique store and visitor centre, found at 321, Sisowath Quay, stocks a variety of interesting and attractive products including jewellery, scarves and bags, children’s toys, men’s products, t-shirts, and home décor items. You’re sure to find something with your name on it. All the products in-store are handcrafted by young women and men who have overcome their former lives as victims of trafficking in Cambodia’s sex industry.

Daughters of Cambodia

Take a short stroll down the riverside from the Night Market and you’ll find Tonlé, on the corner of St. 110 and Sisowath Quay. An ethical fashion label, Tonlé is all about paying workers fair wages, with decent benefits, while using ethically and environmentally friendly sourced material so you can feel good about looking great. With everything from youthful prints to sophisticated dresses and funky accessories, you’d be forgiven for splurging a little here. At Tonlé, you will truly feel good about spending your money, knowing where it goes. On the corner of St. 51 and 360 is the Tabitha store. This store features a gorgeous range of beautiful, handcrafted silk products. From bedding to tablecloths, to bags and shawls, all crafted from the finest Cambodian silk. These products are all designed and produced locally by Cambodian artisans through Tabitha’s programme. Through this project, participants learn valuable skills including craftsmanship and management of personal finances. Across the road from the Tuol Sleng Museum on St. 133 is Cambodian Creations. This social enterprise aims to generate income for at-risk Cambodian workers in an ethical, fair-trade environment. The

proceeds generated by this initiative provide the workers with dependable, meaningful employment that allows them to make plans and lay the groundwork for a brighter future. They stock a fabulous range of jewellery, handicrafts and knitted toys, sourced from a number of socially responsible producers across Cambodia. Word to the wise, their knitted elephants are truly adorable; if you’ve got kids or younger siblings in your life, you’ll definitely struggle to leave without buying one to send home. Have a wander down St. 144, near Kandal Market, and you’ll come across the Made store. The ethos of this transformative project is all about providing sustainable, viable employment as a way to aid healing, restoration, and reintegration for survivors of sex trafficking or sexual exploitation. Everything in-store is carefully handmade to the highest quality in their employment center just outside of Phnom Penh. Made provides these survivors with financial security, training and, most importantly, a life of stability away from the world they’ve left behind. Featuring a variety of cool, casual apparel, bags, wallets and other accessories, Made is well worth a visit. Rajana Association

MARKETS

Bargain hunting The buzz and mayhem of the city’s covered markets are what makes Phnom Penh a mecca for shopaholics. No trip to the city would be complete without hitting at least one, so let’s check ‘em out. Phnom Penh has for many years been a shopper’s paradise where bargains have to be fought over and where, in the majority of cases, ‘locally made’ means put together round the corner, but beware of imitations. The most prominent of the capital’s marketplaces is Psar Thmei, the Central Market. Prior to 1935 the area was a swamp called Beng Decho, which was prone to flooding during the rainy season. The lake was drained and construction of what is now a market designed by Jean Desbois and engineered by Louis Chauchon began in 1935. As a landmark in the Kingdom of Wonder it gradually became more and more scruffy over the years and the capital’s city fathers welcomed an offer by the French Development Agency to return the site to its former, pristine glory. The work was pretty well finished in 2011 and the stallholders returned to continue flogging their fare - although the rental of their sites has gone up and their prices have risen accordingly. Not that many people complain as they haggle over handicrafts. After all, what would a trip to Cambodia be without a scarf or three in different

colours and lovingly made with pure silk or cotton? Souvenir t-shirts, too, are a must-buy from simple designs with the Khmer alphabet and flag to Tin Tin and imagery of Angkor Wat. The central area is a wonder

Psar Thmei of design and engineering with a domed core and four wings radiating outwards. Under the cupola, watches, precious and semi-precious stones, gold and silver jewellery dominate accompanied by lines of stallholders selling clothing for Khmer tots, teens and twenty-somethings to barangs looking for presents for themselves or loved ones. Its outside stalls have been transformed from a rag-tag collection of haphazard areas specialising in everything from clothing to cooking utensils, electrical goods to fresh sea fish

44 OCTOBER 2016 - JANUARY 2017 - where to go and what to do in Phnom Penh!

Orussey Market and crustaceans to a more ordered assemblage of product areas. Rumours have been circulating for some time that the road around the market and several of the feeder streets to its core will in the future be pedestrianised. Earlier interviews suggested that many stallholders were going to move to other markets where the rent was less steep, though the market is still busy and recent enquiries have painted a very different and more encouraging picture. A slight oddity in the capital’s market scene is just a stone’s throw from the Sorya Shopping Centre, and called, inevitably, the Golden Sorya Mall. Originally focused on shoes and clothing for the ever fashion-conscious Khmer youth, it has undergone a transformation over the years, and the majority of the space is now given over to bars and restaurants, many of which are open until very late at night. You might still find something of interest to you here, but probably not. There have been few changes at the famous Russian Market since the movement of the many scruffy outside stalls, except for the several merchants who have adorned their premises with fancy signage. Famous for its Aladdin’s cave of bootleg software, CDs and

DVDs, plus just about everything a budding yuppie would want to be seen with, it’s a steamy, clammy rabbit warren of colours and noise reminiscent of an Arabian souk. Its popularity, though, has enlivened the streets radiating off its four sides where bars, bistros and restaurants, ice cream shops and snackeries have reached out to the mostly heat-exhausted shoppers. Orussey is another reliable standby with a vast selection of dry bulk foods, fruit, vegetables, fish and cut flowers in addition to kramas, t-shirts, sneakers, underwear and household electrical goods. If you fancy getting sweaty while bagging yourself a bargain, then head straight for there. Alternative markets include Psar Chas, which offers a wide range of fruit, and Olympic, a predominantly wholesale market which has among other items wholesale fabrics of all hues and designs by the mile. Boeung Keng Kang market, at the southern end of St. 57 where it intersects with St. 380, is a popular market among young Cambodians looking for fashion items to affordable prices. The market has a wide range of secondhand clothes at cheap prices, with t-shirts available for just a dollar or less. Olympic Market

Talking tariffs

Sponsored by

Metfone

Whether you are living here in Phnom Penh or just passing through, there are numerous telephone services available to you from several different operators. Here are some brief details of what’s on offer:

Landlines If you need a fixed line at your home or office (a 023 number), contact Camintel (023 986 789) or Telecom Cambodia (023 426 510). Installation costs around US$20 and, depending on the tariff and time of day, calls to landlines and local mobiles cost around 7-10c a minute. Metfone offers nationwide network coverage across Cambodia covering all towns, provinces & districts along national roads numbers 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7 and 8.

Mobile Services There are currently six companies offering mobile phone services in Cambodia, all of whom cover Siem Reap, Phnom Penh and most provincial areas. Prices are typically around 6-8c a minute for local calls to mobiles and landlines. Metfone offers affordable pre-paid, postpaid, home internet, roaming, international calls & unlimited internet packages with the fastest & largest 3G network and download speeds up to 15 MB per second.

VOIP Services You can now make international calls from all the mobile networks, with prices varying between service providers, often as low as 5c a minute. Skype is also available so if your SIM has a data plan or if you have access to Wi-Fi, this can be a practical alternative. Metfone offers clear voice technology with seamless real-time connection calls to fixed-lines or mobiles at a flat rate. You can save up to 25% while calling to the 11 most popular countries.

Tourist Facilities If you’re a visitor to Cambodia, you can buy a Tourist SIM card from several mobile operators, which you can use for in-country calls as well as for calls abroad. Metfone’s Met Travel SIM Card offers 3c/min calling rates to 25 countries plus 2GB of free data, a 3$ basic account and 2$ bonus for each user. These are available at booths in Phnom Penh or Siem Reap Airport and tour agent offices. If you rather use your international SIM card, several operators offer roaming facilities though these are very expensive compared with using a local SIM.

LEiSURE

Pleasure in leisure Phnom Penh is a hive of activity with plenty going on in and around town to fill your days and nights with fun. Whether you want to learn to cook Khmer food, or tear it up on the roads, the city has it all. So you’ve ticked The Killing Fields, S21 and a tour of The Royal Palace off your list and you’re left wondering what there is to do in Phnom Penh. Thankfully, the capital is packed with activities catering to every taste, from the fond foodie to the keen photographer, adrenaline junkie and cultural fiend. Cambodia is home to some top-class cuisine and if you fancy learning how to rustle up some classic dishes for friends back home, frizz restaurant offers classes suitable for all levels. The group is introduced to popular Cambodian fruit and vegetables before buying ingredients from the market. Back in the classroom, students explore traditional methods of preparing food and go on to prepare a series of dishes. Those seeking an adrenaline rush can jump onboard an automatic ATV quad bike and take a Blazing Trails tour—a unique way to explore the paddy fields, forests and villages that sit outside the city. A day spent racing round Phnom Penh’s only premiere go-karting track will definitely get the adrenaline pumping through the veins. Kambol Kart Raceway’s

980-metre circuit is located on the outskirts of the city and takes in lush countryside. The centre’s 6.5hp go-karts hit speeds of up to 65 to 70kph and are often used for team-building exercises, corporate activities and family fun days. Cambodian Living Arts

To get a taste for the traditional, apsara dance performances presented by Cambodian Living Arts take place Monday to Saturday at the National Museum. The production, Plae Pakaa —which means fruitful in Khmer— showcases Cambodia’s rich and vibrant culture using traditional arts. This season, the performances are 'Children of Bassac (a snapshot of Cambodia through dance), Mak Therng (the quest for love and justice), and Passage of Life (living the Cambodian life).

EXPLORiNG PHNOM PENH

Russian Market

Address: St.163 cnr St.444 | Opening hours: 7am - 6pm The Russian Market, so called due to its popularity with Russian expats in the ‘80s, is not to be missed. With everything but the kitchen sink gathered under its humble tin roof, go early for the cool and lucky first customer prices. Before diving in, peruse the market’s edges for cheap DVDs and electronics, alongside coconuts and peeled pineapples to snack on. Enticing street foods like Khmer-style pancakes, crab spring rolls and pan-fried chive cakes are available on the market’s outer west side - the inner stalls are strictly for the hygienically adventurous! Its inner narrow walkways seem like a gauntlet at first but stalls are arranged in grid formation and grouped according to products: food, souvenirs, art supplies, household items and clothing. Prices are negotiable, with a good rule of thumb being 50-75% of the asking price. Keen vendors are knowledgeable and can wax lyrical about their products of interest. The market specialises in good imitation items, especially Northface backpacks. Factory seconds of high street brands can be snapped up for a fraction of the RRP, and you can even buy fabric and have clothes tailor-made. When temperatures rise, head outside to artisan shops on neighbouring streets to browse local, ethically produced handicrafts, including silk, in air-conditioned comfort. Go on foot from the Russian market neighbourhood or ask your tuk tuk driver or motodop for “Psar Toul Tom Poung”. Whatever the weather, be ready for a head-spinning time in this Aladdin’s cave of hidden gems!

Cambo Cruise

You can’t leave Phnom Penh without having explored its waterways and there are plenty of operators offering various cruises, from sunrise to sunset and beyond. These vary in price, quality, duration and location so be sure to do some research before settling on your chosen vessel. Take a trip down Phnom Penh’s Tonle Sap river with Cambo Cruise. Their Silk Island lunch cruise offers a buffet lunch and tour of the beautiful Silk Island (which in itself is well worth a visit and a nice escape from the city) while their sunset dinner cruise features live local music, a buffet dinner and plenty of atmosphere as you drift along the tranquil Tonle Sap. Alternatively, enjoy a sunset or dinner cruise aboard the Kanika catamaran, with departures every day at 5pm and 7pm from the Port. Budding photographers can brush up on their artistic skills by signing up to one of Nathan Horton’s Photography Tours. The one to 10-day trips range in ability and are designed to enable students to develop their camera skills while exploring off the beaten track Cambodia. The aim is to encourage photographers to dig deeper into the country’s culture than the usual

tourist while taking some great shots home to prove it. There are several independent art galleries and centres helping to promote the local art scene that are well worth a visit. Java Arts Café (Sihanouk Blvd & Tuol Kork) serves up a delectable selection of great tea and coffee to accompany a very recommendable food menu. The cafe has a gallery upstairs, which regularly showcases local talent. Meta House (Sothearos Blvd) is another venue that supports the city’s art scene, with constantly changing exhibitions hanging on its walls. It also screens free documentaries on both Cambodian and international issues in the afternoons and evenings. Food and drinks are also available from the bar. As is the case across Asia, karaoke is incredibly popular among locals in Phnom Penh. As a result there are many fantastic KTV spots across the city where punters can rent a room and enjoy several hours belting out all your party favourites, for a fraction of what it would cost in most places around the world. Big Apple on St. 67, near the Central Market, is a great choice for karaoke enthusiasts, with large rooms, excellent English song selections and fantastic service. Meta House

Breakfast perfected

The capitol is full of landmarks and historical places that most expats, and even locals, probably don't know about. Here we give you some of the secrets of the city, but are you adventurous enough to check them out? When it comes to local breakfast specialties, one dish rises above the rest in the sea of flavours, textures and smells that is the Cambodian capital. Kuyteav, a rich rice noodle soup, is Phnom Penh’s undisputed pride. This massively popular breakfast is prepared with generous amounts of garnish and condiments, and a rich broth made from pork bones, dried squid, and sugar. Kuyteav Phnom Penh, as the local version is known, takes the dish to the next level by adding to the mix giant Mekong prawns and beef offal. If Kuyteav is king among local specialties, then Kuyteav Chhganh Sokhok cannot be regarded as nothing less than a historic monument of the capital. This mom-and-pops restaurant has been around since 1985 and was opened by a Chinese man who survived the Khmer Rouge. Unbeknownst to him, by opening his restaurant he helped saved this important dish: Kuyteav was among the first victims of the Khmer Rouge regime, which by emptying the towns destroyed their culinary traditions too. If you are in for experiencing the “real deal” come to this historic spot, but expect to pay significantly more than in other restaurants. To reach this restaurant walk south down St. 107. Before you hit St. 182, you’ll notice a little alley on your right. Enter the passageway, and you’ll see the eatery.

FAMiLY ACTiViTiES

A family affair While Phnom Penh is predominantly an adults’ playground, there are plenty of attractions that are fun for the whole family. From playparks to movies to ice-skating to laser tag, it’s all here. As tourism continues to shape its landscape an increasing number of parents are enjoying the emerging market aimed at them and their kids. From a lazy day by one of the many hotel swimming pools and taking a stroll along the riverside for ice-cream, to catching the latest film at the flicks and stepping back in time at the arcades, Phnom Penh has it all. Family friendly The Shop Too is a green island in the midst of the Tuol Kork. It is the perfect safe haven for families with children thanks to hundreds of square meters of green garden space. To keep the energy levels at full tilt they offer a large choice of pizzas, weekly BBQ’s and seafood specials. Kids City is one of the latest facilities to open its doors in the city, setting the pace for the wave that will inevitably follow. The indoor entertainment centre on Sihanouk Blvd is a hive of activity and excitement spread over 11 levels of fun. Inside the colourful centre, youngsters can take part in a series of sports, including ice-skating and a climbing wall, play laser tag, enjoy the playground and discover the world in the Science Zone. While the kids are enjoying themselves,

parents can keep busy browsing the designer stores inside or take a break in the onsite Gloria Jean’s Coffees or Blue Pumpkin cafés. For a different perspective on the city, take a trip down Phnom Penh’s Kids City

Tonle Sap river with Cambo Cruise. Their Silk Island lunch cruise offers a buffet lunch and tour of Silk Island while their sunset dinner cruise features live music, a buffet dinner and plenty of atmosphere as you drift along the tranquil Tonle Sap. Take a step back in time and relive those forgotten roller disco days at the capital’s roller-skating rink, which sits on the top floor of Sorya Shopping Centre (corner of St. 63 and 142). Also offering staggering views of the capital, the open-air rink has ramps and jumps for kids to test their skills on. The games

Legend Cinema

arcade next door also provides endless hours of entertainment, and there is a whole floor dedicated to Cambodian food and drinks where you can replenish your energy after a session on the rink. Make the most of the dry season and take a leisurely stroll along Sisowath Quay, also known as the riverside. The picturesque lawns outside The Royal Palace are always full of Khmer families feeding the flocks of pigeons there so why not buy a bag of seeds from one of the many sellers and join in the fun. A little further up the riverside is Blue Pumpkin, which is famous across Cambodia for its delicious ice cream so be sure to stop and try it. A sunset cruise is the perfect way for a family to end a day and there are plenty of boats offering trips and tours throughout the day and night, with most guesthouses and hotels able to arrange tickets. As well as offering sunset, dinner and apsara dance cruises, Kanika Restaurant-Bar (a uniquely designed catamaran) runs a lunchtime cruise with an 11 course, all-you-can-eat, Asian-style buffet. Leaving from the Port, north of town, the cruise passes the Royal Palace and continues on to the capital’s largest bridge, The Japanese Bridge.

Family film time is also an option, with Phnom Penh now home to several multiplex cinemas. Platinum Cineplex, on the fifth floor of Sorya Shopping Centre, screens the latest movies in 2D and some in 3D format. Legend Cinema opened in 2011 on the third floor of City Mall Shopping Centre, near Olympic Stadium, and also boasts a screen at TK Avenue, a boutique mall in Toul Kork. TK Avenue also boasts several boutique stores and restaurants and is becoming a popular recreational venue especially among the younger Khmer crowd. On the outskirts of Phnom Penh, Kingdom Resort offers an entertaining water park for the kids featuring multiple water-slides, swings and state of the art play equipment. Adults can peacefully occupy themselves with the relaxing spa and sauna while the kids run riot out of sight and out of mind. Last but not least, Aeon Mall—a Western-style, massive shopping centre—brings you a host of international brands via clothing stores, household goods, restaurants and a great range of leisure activities for all the family to enjoy including ten-pin bowling, a 4D cinema, laser tag, ice skating and games arcade.

SPORTiNG ACTiViTiES

Time for action Don’t let the heat stop you from enjoying some good, healthy fun! In fact, much of Phnom Penh’s best sporting activities take place in comfortable, air-conditioned indoors; so let’s get moving! Phnom Penh’s sporting community continues to expand, with each season introducing an array of new and exciting team and individual sports with which players of all skill levels can get involved. Ultimate Frisbee is one such group sport that’s bound to leave you simultaneously breathless and energised. It’s a mixed gender, no-contact sport that’s run by the Phnom Penh Ultimate Association, who encourage local and international players of all ages to join. Also on Tuesdays & Thursdays is Phnom Penh Dodgeball, which involves all of the fun and significantly less mishaps than its film namesake. It kicks off at 7:30pm both days at #13 St. 456 in Toul Tom Pong (Russian Market area). For rock-climbing enthusiasts, Phnom Climb Community Gym on St. 460 (South of Russian Market) offers several walls with varying degrees of difficulty (including muscle-busting overhangs) suitable for climbers of all levels. The venue is open Mondays to Saturdays. Climbs are also possible at the multi-use climbing wall at Kids City.

Incorporating a Clip ‘n’ Climb system, a variety of walls and routes to meet the needs of everyone, from first-time to experienced climbers, are available. If you are a speed demon, Kids City also offers the opportunity for families Kids City

to spend a day go-karting on a well-built indoor track, but for the more adventurous daredevils the Kambol Kart Raceway offers a professional circuit in a rural setting just outside of Phnom Penh . Regular kart hire is available at $12 for ten minutes on what is a fun and testing track. A favourite activity for fun-seekers of all ages in the capital is the Ice Park in Aeon Mall, which enables locals and expats to enjoy the thrill of ice skating and the cold. The Ice

BlueO Cambodia

Park is the first indoor snow and ice themed entertainment center in Cambodia and offers a 1,000 square-metre ice-rink. In a story reminiscent of the film Cool Runnings, ice hockey has made a surprising debut in the Kingdom, with ambitious preparations to get a team ready for the 2017 SEA Games. The Cambodian Hockey League, who for the past eight years have been playing ball hockey in Cambodia are driving the plans and weekly training sessions on Monday evenings are now taking place on the Aeon Ice Rink. Aeon Mall offers other activities for the action inclined. Challenge your family or friends to a game of bowling at BlueO Cambodia, probably the only bowling alley in the Kingdom. Or you can enjoy the thrill of shooting your friends with laser guns at the Laser Tag Arena. A selection of Kun Khmer, Bokator, Yutakhun Khom and other traditional martial arts abound in Cambodia. For those who wish to get their hands a little dirty, the Cambodian Mixed Martial Arts Association (MMA) offer coaching and conditioning courses in a wide

range of martial arts by professional instructors. Learn the ancient art of Kun Khmer at Paddy’s Fight Club or try your hands at Krav Maga at Prokout Fitness & Fight Center. If you are interested in learning traditional Apsara dancing or getting fit and fighting with one of Cambodia’s leading MMA fighters Chan Rothana, try out the Selapak Centre in Phnom Penh. You’ll also find a huge range of gyms at which you can pummel and punch to your heart’s desire, without the need to sign up for specific courses. Of course, boxing is just as much a spectator sport in Cambodia’s capital. Back-to-back live Khmer boxing matches take place at CTN Arena every Saturday and Sunday from 1pm. They’re open to the public and free of charge for both locals and visitors. The Cambodian Basketball League is a private competition organised by the ten teams involved. The best basketball players and teams of the Kingdom compete for the CBL title every year at the Tiffy Arena, but games are played every Saturday at Chroy Changvar, with free entrance.

TRAVEL

Jump aboard Boasting an abundance of beaches, jungles, mountains, lakes and temples galore, Cambodia is a country just waiting to be explored. Nowadays there’s almost nowhere you can’t get to. Travel is cheap for the most part, and all major destinations are accessible from Phnom Penh. Why not get going? The temple town of Siem Reap is top on everyone’s list. Buses leave Phnom Penh hourly between 6.30am and 2.30pm. Giant Ibis and Mekong Express are popular choices, offering Wi-Fi and A/C. The journey takes between 5 and 8 hours and tickets start at about $10. A taxi takes five hours and costs upward of $65. Night buses to Siem Reap with Giant Ibis depart at 10:30pm, 11.00pm, and 11:30pm and takes about 6.5 hours. Beach lovers should head south to Sihanoukville, especially the popular Otres beach and the smattering of idyllic islands off the coast. Buses, with faster minivans available, depart hourly and take between 3 and 6 hours. Tickets start at $5. Taxis cost about $50. Nearby Kep and Kampot are sleepy neighbouring towns offering a slice of tranquility. Kampot boasts a relaxing riverside setting while the even smaller town of Kep, which is 30 minutes away

by bus, is a quiet seaside resort. Both are accessible by bus from Phnom Penh, which depart regularly between 7am and 2.45pm and take between 3 and 5 hours. Tickets start at $5. Taxis cost about $40. Giant Ibis

Artistic Battambang in the North West is also worth visiting. Morning buses depart hourly from Phnom Penh. Tickets cost upward of $6 and taxis cost about $60. The jungle and mountains of Mondulkiri in the North East are starting to feature on tourists’ radars and are accessible within a 6 to 7 hour bus journey or 5 hour taxi ride. Minibuses depart from Phnom Penh in the morning and cost $12. A taxi will cost about $80.

72 OCTOBER 2016 - JANUARY 2017 - where to go and what to do in Phnom Penh!

Bus travel Cambodia’s road network has improved dramatically in the last few years and the main tourist cities and many provincial capitals are easily accessible by bus. Here’s an overview of your options. All of the companies listed here use air-con buses of generally good quality. Some also offer TV, snacks, water and an onboard toilet. The route from Phnom Penh to Siem Reap is now also covered by some companies using Ford Transit minibuses which offer a quicker service though they lack the onboard amenities of the larger buses.

DAY TRiPS

What lies beyond With plenty of places to explore on the outskirts of Phnom Penh, escaping the hustle and bustle of city life couldn’t be easier. Get yourself out of town to see so much more. If you plan on spending a few days in Phnom Penh and fancy venturing outside the heartbeat of the city then fear not because there are plenty of day trips to keep you busy. If it’s fresh air you’re craving, unparalleled 360-degree views of the capital and surrounding countryside, with a bit of history thrown in, then Oudong is the perfect place to start. Situated about an hour west of Phnom Penh, off Route 5, sits the remains of the former capital. Now abandoned, the once royal city of Oudong was the capital from the early 17th century until 1866 when it relocated to Phnom Penh. A return journey costs about $30 by private taxi or $20 for a tuk tuk. For something on the wild side then take a trip to Phnom Tamao. Located about 45km south of Phnom Penh, the zoological park and wildlife rescue centre is home to more than 96 species of birds, mammals and reptiles, including those confiscated from traffickers or saved from the clutches of poachers. In total, there are more than 1,000 animals including

elephants, wolves and the world’s largest captive collection of pileated gibbons and Malayan sun bears. A boat tour is a fun way to discover outside Phnom Penh, with Cambo Cruise Oudong

one of the best choices available. Westerned owned, they offer both lunchtime and sunset cruises to the beautiful Silk Island, with free pickup from your hotel and 100% satisfaction guaranteed. Tonle Bati is another sight worth seeing. The small lake is about 30km south of Phnom Penh and is a popular weekend destination with locals, who flock there to relax, picnic and fish. Phnom Chisor, sits 20 minutes south of the lake at the peak of a mountain with 461 steps to climb.

Siem Reap Travelling to...

If you’re planning a trip to Siem Reap, here you will find the inside track on your available transport options: BUS National Route 6 has been upgraded and now makes for a super smooth and comfortable journey. Several bus companies ply the route, with prices ranging from $5 to $13. The journey takes around 6 hours. Morning buses leave between 6:30-9am and lunchtime buses around 12:30-2pm. BOAT Once the most popular choice of transport, there are now better options, given major improvements to the roads in recent years. At $30+ it’s relatively expensive and the view can quickly become monotonous. If you do choose the boat, wear plenty of sunscreen if you sit on the roof, and take a pair of earplugs to drown out the noise of the engine. Boats leave from the Phnom Penh ferry port around 7am and journey time jetty-to-jetty is around 6 hours. TAXI Fuel prices have come down recently, making a taxi a good choice, especially if you’re in a group of 3-4 people. The journey takes around 5 hours. You should be able to get a car for yourself for between $60 and $80 depending on what time of day you want to leave (mornings are generally cheaper as the driver has the chance to find a return fare back to Phnom Penh). You also have the option to stop en route as and when you choose. Ask your hotel or guesthouse to arrange this for you. PLANE The quickest but by far the most expensive option, the flight to Siem Reap takes around an hour. At the time of writing there are three airlines flying the route (Cambodia Angkor Air, Cambodia Bayon Airlines and Bassaka Air) with prices ranging from $35 to $90 one way inclusive of taxes. And remember you’ll need a taxi into Siem Reap town from the airport, costing $5. TRAIN Contrary to some beliefs, there is no passenger railway service to Siem Reap. So if anyone tries to sell you a train ticket, don’t buy it. Train service in the country resumed on April this year to connect Phnom Penh with the coast. Unfortunately, Siem Reap is still not reachable by this mode of transportation. Take a bus.

TRAVEL

Sun, sea and sand SIHANOUKVILLE

To escape the citys sizzling heat, head down to Sihanoukville, the laidback epicentre of Cambodia. While Serendipity Beach’s popularity continues to rise among backpackers, the beautiful Otres Beach, south of town, is the ideal spot for a relaxed, family vacation. The southern islands are the place to be if you are looking for the tropical paradise vibe.

airlines operate the route Phnom Penh - Sihanoukville. Cambodia Angkor Air, the state’s flagship carrier, and Chinese-run Bayon Airlines will both land you safely in Snooky. Sokha Beach

GETTiNG THERE Set less than 200km apart, the journey from the capital to Sihanoukville is relatively painless. By road, one of the most popular options is to take a bus. Capitol Tours and Sorya are the main players, with tickets that go for $5-6 and a travel time of under 5 hours. If you are looking for a faster and more comfortable way to cover the distance, consider a mini-bus. Giant Ibis is by far your best bet, with a 4-hour travel time and tickets going for $10, including hotel pickup. Private taxis can be hired for anywhere between $45 and $60. Expect to get there in between 2.5 and 3.5 hours. For shared taxis, seats costa around $7-10 per person. If you don’t mind having your feet off the ground, you can always fly to the southern touristic spot. Two

A newly available option is to take the train. Train tickets from the capital to Sihanoukville go for just $6.

WHERE TO STAY Sihanoukville has a variety of accommodation ranging from a basic fan room at $5 to a luxurious suite for $250 a night, with several boutique hotels in the $30-60 range. Most are located either downtown, near the bustling Ochheuteal Beach or at Victory Hill. Otres Beach, which sits about 10 minutes away from town is a popular

option for budget travellers seeking peace and quiet, although the area is rapidly changing as more upmarket accommodation and restaurants set up shop.

ACTiVITiES Sihanoukville is, without a doubt, the water sports capital of Cambodia, with a long list of activities offered to the visitor. Many visit this beach town in search of their scuba diving certification, or to relax with a snorkeling, kayaking or standup paddleboarding session, while others go for jet skiing or flyboard. Kayaking

FOOD & DRiNK There are numerous expat-owned restaurants that have brought many international culinary delights to the city, including French, Russian, Japanese, Korean, and, of course, Chinese. Restaurants specialising in local food are also widely available. Sihanoukville is a fishing town where fresh seafood is brought to the market daily in astonishing variety. Restaurateurs buy fish from the different markets around town and use it in many different dishes, from amok to fish and chips. Make sure you visit one of the city’s many fish markets: you’ll find your favourite seafood, from barracuda and marlin fillets to crabs and squid.

NiGHTLiFE

Countryside tours and trips to the nearby islands are a popular recreational option. A great number of fascinating places lie within a 1-2 hour-ride from town. You can visit the small, charming towns of Kampot and Kep. Steung Hauv, a small fishing community, can be found an hour outside of town. Other day trips include Ream National Park and Tek Chou Waterfall. If you are craving some adrenaline, keep in mind that most of these trips can be done by dirt bike or quad.

When the sun sets over the glistening ocean, Sihanoukville does not go to sleep. Indeed, the city’s nightlife is one of the Kingdom’s richest and most vibrant, and there’s no shortage of bars and nocturnal hangouts. People party in the many bars along the beach, but there are plenty of off-beach places as well, including a string of bars along Serendipity Beach Road. Victory Hill is home to what many consider the city’s official bar street, with more than a dozen hostess and sports bars, although its popularity seems to be on the decline. The downtown and Ochheuteal Beach are also quite popular nocturnal spots, though Otres Beach is becoming increasingly popular. During high season the popular Saturday Night Market

features stalls, live music and DJs until the early hours. If gambling is your thing, finding a casino in Sihanoukville won’t be a problem. The coastal town boasts 14 gambling venues.

THE iSLANDS The picturesque islands scattered across the turquoise waters of the Gulf of Thailand are some of Cambodia's most pristine spots. None have paved roads, cash machines or 24-hour electricity, plus the internet connection is unreliable at best and the phone signal always wavers. But what the islands lack in amenities they more than make up for in natural beauty. The most popular of the Sihanoukville islands is Koh Rong, 26km off the mainland coast. Although the island is almost entirely forested, visitors are well rewarded by the crystalline waters and white sandy beaches. Though sparsely populated, the island nonetheless has a wide range of food and accommodation options. Koh Rong is substantially busier and boasts a markedly more vivid party life than Koh Rong Samloem, the island's smaller neighbour. Koh Rong Samloem is the more up market option with new high end places mushrooming. Off the shore of Ream National Park sits Koh Thmei, an almost uninhabited island flanked by mangrove forests, where visitors can spend starry nights in environmentally friendly, solar-powered bungalows. Closer to Sihanoukville is Koh Ta Kiev, a small island just an hour offshore with

rustic accommodation and camping options. Snorkelers should head to Koh Kaong Kang/Thass or the uninhabited Koh Koun. Although none of the islands listed are more than three hours from the mainland, island-hopping off Cambodia’s coast can require patience - getting from one to the other may require going back to shore or hiring a private boat for the journey. A round trip ferry ride between Ochheuteal Beach and Koh Rong/ Koh Rong Samloem will set you back $20.

Island Trips

KAMPOT & KEP

Sunny, peaceful and a few degrees cooler than Phnom Penh and Siem Reap, Kampot and Kep are favoured holiday getaways for Cambodia’s city-dwellers. Kampot, a quiet but happening riverine town, and Kep, a sleepy coastal city, are must-see destinations for any traveller searching for a taste of Cambodia’s South.

GETTiNG THERE From Phnom Penh, National Route 3 takes travellers to Kampot, with buses taking about 4 to 5 hours and costing

around $5. A private taxi for this same journey will set you back $35, but it will take only 3 hours. If you are starting off from Sihanoukville, the 80 miles journey to Kampot will take around 1 to 2 hours, with a road in a surprisingly good condition. Expect to pay around $30 to $40 for a private taxi. Shared taxis cost $5 per person, and usually carry six or seven passengers. While there are no proper buses currently, there are several van companies that go between Sihanoukville and Kampot. Kampot Tours and Champa Mekong Tours are

Kep Waterfront the most popular with expats. The trip will cost $5 and take 2 hours. The train - which resumed operations this year - will cover the distance between Sihanoukville and Kampot for $4 to $5. The quiet seaside resort of Kep is about 30 minutes south of Kampot. The trip is only 25 km and takes between thirty minutes to an hour depending on which type of transport you choose; your options include tuk tuk (around $12 one way), moto ($6), taxi ($20), boat ($9.5) and bus ($3). More adventurous readers might hire a motorbike and

ride the journey instead - this is quite a popular choice especially in the dry months from November onwards.

WHERE TO STAY There are numerous places to stay in Kampot, and they can roughly be divided into two distinctive areas. The town centre hosts various accommodations that cater for the budget backpacker to the high-end tourist. For a room with a view, there are several guesthouses that sit on the river just out of town and offer the perfect place to kick back and relax (or party, depending on which one you pick). A room with a twin bed and a shared bathroom can go for as low as $6. Although much smaller, Kep caters for the medium to high-end tourists, with a good choice of hotels and guesthouses, many of which boast pools to help you cool down after a day of sightseeing. Kep's accommodation is quite spaced out, and while there are some within easy walking distance of the beach, many of the options are clustered on the hill off the Kampot road, which begins at the 'bus station'. These places deliver excellent sunsets, but the further you go, the more you’ll be relying on transport to get you around. You’ll find tempting budget options close to town, with some dorm beds and basic rooms. Prices start at around $20 a night.

ACTiVITiES Kampot is home to historic Bokor Mountain, which makes a great day

Bokor Church trip by motorbike as the road is now in excellent condition all the way. Kayaking and other water activities are also available and, during high season, a recommended activity is stand-up paddleboarding through the mangroves further upstream. Exploring the surrounding countryside is a must when in Kampot and the best way to do this is hiring a motorbike and hitting the roads. Despite being laid-back and sleepy, Kep is home to a wealth of activities to enjoy. As well as boasting a beach with white sands, there’s Kep National Park, boat trips, snorkelling and the famous crab market where visitors can enjoy the town’s signature crab and Kampot pepper. Rabbit Island also sits off the coast of Kep and is a 20 minute boat trip away. Other popular activities include Kompong Trach and its caves, which are about 35km northeast of Kep. The limestone caves can be explored and inside sits a huge reclining Buddha and a small lake.

without a taste of the Kep crab. This blue swimmer crab is specially renowned for its taste in curries. Options abound when it comes to sampling the gorgeously sweet and meaty crab. Culinary adventurers head straight to the Kep crab market, where they can choose the choicest live catches from vendor’s baskets, haggling down the price before paying a few thousand riel to have them steamed at a nearby stall. Visitors looking for a more hassle-free dinner will find it in the homey row of restaurants near the market, which all have crab platters as the highlight of the menu. Served still in the shell often with a thick, peppery sauce, diners get to dig into each crab, scooping out the flesh in a messy and satisfying culinary experience.

NiGHTLiFE Kampot is home to several bars, mostly along the river in the town centre, with some of the venue that sit on the river hosting live music at weekends. And while nightlife in Kep is fairly scarce, there are a few bars near the crab market that can get quite lively at nighttime. Local Food

FOOD & DRiNK Fresh seafood is widely available, with crab, prawns, squid and many types of ocean fish caught fresh daily. No visit to Kep is complete

Health matters There can be few things as frustrating as waiting months to go on your holiday and then have it ruined by getting sick once you are there. Cambodia has its fair share of things to make you ill, and many dangers come and go with the seasons. As the wet season persists, you can expect rains to fall hard and fast pretty much every day in the afternoon, but only for an hour or two. As November rolls around, however, the sun will blaze relentlessly once again. It’s important to keep yourself healthy during the change of season in order to get the most out of what the city has to offer. Here are a few simple tips you can follow to ensure you’re covered for all occasions and never miss a moment of fun:

NEVER LEAVE HOME WiTHOUT A PONCHO OR UMBRELLA.

ALWAYS CARRY CLEAN WATER WiTH YOU.

1

Don’t get caught in the rain! Plastic ponchos are particlarly easy to pack.

If you exercise

4 or sweat a lot, consider drinking an electrolyte

solution once a day. (Watch out: too much ORS becomes a laxative!)

DON’T WALK iNTO FLOODED AREAS.

Debris hidden in the water can cut your feet. Clean cuts with soapy water, apply antibiotic cream, and cover until healed.

2

BE WARY OF HEAT EXHAUSTiON.

If you’re dizzy, have a headache, or get stomach cramps after being in the sun, go to a cool place. Drink extra fluids.

5

PROTECT YOURSELF FROM MOSQUiTOS.

Use insect repellent containing DEET or picaridin. Spray permethrin on clothes and linens while not using them (dry thoroughly before wearing). Use screens or mosquito nets.

3

DON’T FORGET THE RULES ABOUT FOOD.

Don’t eat undercooked meat. Only eat raw vegetables if they are peeled or washed. Wash your hands frequently and carry hand sanitiser with you.

STAYiNG SAFE

Simple steps

Here are our top 10 tips to help you make the most out of your trip to Phnom Penh and elsewhere in Cambodia.

1. A gree on a fare with a tuk-tuk or moto driver before setting off on a journey. A tuk-tuk journey should not cost more than $5 to cross the city and a moto no more than $2 (though these fares will increase at night). 2. M any banks charge up to $5 to withdraw cash from ATMs. Some however offer a free service so it is worth checking before taking out money. 3. A s with any city, bag snatches and muggings, especially at night, occasionally occur. Avoid carrying large sums of money and valuables, and keep hold of bags, cameras and valuables when in a tuk-tuk or moto. 4. D o not assume moto or tuk-tuk drivers can read maps or know where they’re going. They will know the names and locations of pagodas, markets or other local landmarks so use them to navigate where possible. 5. There is a general lack of road safety or rules in Cambodia but at night this increases tenfold, with drink-driving and neglect of traffic lights both common occurrences. Only experienced drivers should drive here, especially after dark. 6. It might sound obvious but even on a cloudy day, Cambodia’s heat is relentless so remember to drink plenty of water, wear sunscreen and go Cambodian and take a break during the midday heat. That’s what that hammock is for. 7. If you fall sick or have an accident, it is worth contacting your embassy for advice or asking for a recommendation from your hotel for a reliable local clinic. 8. C ambodian street food is a cheap and tasty way to refuel. Appease any food-poisoning fears by sticking to stalls surrounded by locals, who know when the food is good. To be safe, drink only bottled water. 9. Try to keep your dollar bills neat. Some stores and vendors will refuse notes with even a small tear, especially $100 bills. This doesn’t apply to the Khmer riel. 10. Keep small change on you and don’t expect your tuk-tuk driver or coffee man to have change of anything more than $10.

There literally is something for eveyone. So starting from the top down, what can travellers and holidaymakers expect? Well the city is now home to several international standard hotels including the riverfront Sofitel Phokeethra, Nagaworld, Cambodiana, InterContinentental and Raffles Hotel Le Royal, where you can easily spend upwards of $150 a night for a standard of luxury comparable with the top echelon of the region’s hotels. A comparatively new phenomenon in the capital is the rise of the business and/or boutique hotel. Many are carefully restored colonial piles located in quiet back streets, especially in the BKK1 area of the city. Expect to pay from $60 a night up for which you’ll get personal service and all mod cons including flat screen TV, power shower, fast Wi-Fi and probably a swimming pool too.

Moving down the price scale to the $25 to $50 a night level nets a wider choice of resting place though you can still expect AC, TV, a fridge and a generally high standard of

Nagaworld amenities, especially compared to other cities in the region at this price range. Budget travellers are well catered to, with a range of inexpensive guesthouses dotted around the city where $10 will get you a clean room with a fan, and for $15 you can find AC and a private bathroom. Some guesthouses also offer longstay rates by the week or month which can save you money if you’re planning to stay a while. Serviced apartments are available for around $600 a month.

EXPLORiNG PHNOM PENH

All in the name

It’s hard to imagine that this busy, bustling, prosperous capital was ever a rickety collection of shacks hugging the bank of the Tonle Sap. How the city got its name divides opinion, but many people prefer the more romantic and folkloric version from 1371 of how Daun (Grandma) Penh was gathering firewood alongside the river when she saw and retrieved a floating koki tree from the water. Inside the tree she found four Buddha statues and one of Vishnu. She took the discovery as a divine blessing and a sign that a Khmer capital would be built there, so she set about ordering the construction of a small hill with a shrine to house the statues. The hill (phnom) later took on the name of its founder (Penh), and the city took its name from the area around it. When Siamese forces (present day Thailand) invaded Angkor in the 15th century, rather than fight a losing battle, King Ponhea Yat and his armies moved to Phnom Penh, giving the widow’s prophecy the royal seal of approval, which in turn heralded the country’s shift away from a predominantly rural and agrarian economy to a more global trade and commerce-orientated future. It was this economic shift that perhaps persuaded the king to establish Phnom Penh as the country’s capital by building several temples and laying out the town along moats and rivers.

Make a splash
