World-Class Golf
in Siem Reap In this temple capital, golf is proving a popular alternative activity for visitors and locals alike. And with sprawling well-appointed greens, it’s not hard to understand why. Six-time major winner Nick Faldo opened Angkor Golf Resort, his first golf course in Cambodia, in December 2007. The resort was the venue of the first Cambodia Championship and the Handa Faldo Cambodian Classic on its Asian Tour. A technically challenging but well-balanced layout, expect strategically placed bunkers and water hazards, which demand concentration throughout one's round. Each hole's difficulty can be modified by specific pin positions, and various tee box locations accommodate low and mid-handicappers. The 300-meter-long driving range is ideal for refining technique before going the whole course. The 18 holes are priced at $125, caddies are available for $12 and buggies for $36. Located 5km from Siem Reap, follow NR6 for 12 minutes while keeping an eye on road signs leading to the resort.

World-class standards and French hospitality abound at Phokeethra Country Club, which is managed by Sofitel Angkor Phokeethra Golf & Spa Resort. The V-Golf designed course caters for all abilities. Its natural lagoons and sand traps offer substantial challenge with tantalising par 3s, par 4s and par 5s requiring a combination of power-shots and techniques. Separate pitching and putting greens allow golfers to tune up skills before heading to the course. Its centrepiece, Roluh Bridge, a wonderfully restored 11th century stone work exudes the historic splendour of Angkor on the fairway. Luxuriate in a round amidst exceptional surroundings for $120, with caddy and buggy hire totalling $30. Situated 20 minutes from the airport, head northwest on National Highway 6 (NR6) and follow the road signs or touch down by helicopter at the Club's landing pad. Siem Reap Booyoung Country Club is the largest golf course in the area, boasting well-manicured layouts and wide, palm-lined fairways. The Club has hosted high-profile local tournaments and received dignitaries, such as the Cambodian prime minister. Singular in its design by Japanese course architect Kentaro Sato, both nines open with long par 5s. A choice of five tees on each hole makes this extraordinary course accessible for all golfers, while its split fairways, meandering creeks and greenside bunkering will challenge the most proficient golfers. Enjoy 18 holes for $120, with buggy rental available for $20 and superbly trained caddies who kowtow throughout the round for $10. After the 18th hole, indulge in the majestic saunas or Korean specialities on offer in its international restaurant. Follow NR6 due east from Angkor Wat and arrive in less than 30 minutes.

Elaborate ornamentation and phenomenal beauty make Angkor Wat undoubtedly one of the eighth wonders of the ancient world. Still more ancient, more secluded and arguably more striking, is Banteay Srei Temple - citadel of the women - a name speculatively derived from its intricate bas relief carvings and diminutive proportions, granting it the honorary nickname, the “jewel of Khmer art.” Exquisitely preserved due to its unique construction of red sandstone, which can be carved like wood or gold, makes its decorative motifs all the more distinctive; from the formidable kalas (all-devouring monsters symbolic of time), to the human or demonic guardian dvarapalas (armed protectors of the temple) and gajasimhas, mythical figures with the body of a lion and the head of an elephant. Indeed, almost every available surface is adorned with elegant carvings, including manifold female deities or devatas which may have given it its title; others believe that the minute bas-reliefs could only have been formed by the hands of women.

Consecrated in 967 A.D, the temple predates Angkor Wat by a century, although its magnitudinous decoration indicated a later date, until the discovery of its foundation commemorative slab. Banteay Srei was primarily dedicated to the Hindu god Shiva and originally bore the name Tribhuvanamaheśvara—great lord of the threefold world— venerated in the form of a linga (symbolic cylindrical structure), its central religious image. Like Angkor Wat, it was occupied continuously until the 14th century, but is singular in retaining its Hindu heritage, never supplanted by Theravada Buddhism. The relief carvings of its central buildings chronicle Hindu tales, as do its ornate pediments (triangular spaces above doorways and openings), the earliest of their type to depict whole mythological scenes, seen on the library buildings of the first inner enclosure.

Banteay Srei temple is located 25km north east of the main temple complex; from Angkor Wat follow the road to Srah Srang and turn right past Pre Rup. Turn right before the East Mebon; pass through the village of Phoum Pradak, and proceed straight across the junction past Banteay Samre. At the fork take the road to the left and shortly after crossing two rivers you will reach Banteay Srei. Upon arrival you will be greeted by informative displays erected by the Cambodian-Swiss Banteay Srei Conservation Project, which installed a drainage system to prevent water damage.
