Canterbury
Beautiful, shady, peaceful, and home to our native wildlife; the City of Canterbury is full of beautiful trees that are as unique and diverse as the people who live here. Small birds are under threat from large aggressive birds, pesticides that poison their food sources, and lack of shelter. To support small bird populations, choose plants carefully. The presence of wasps and bees can be a cause of major concern. This is particularly true during the warmer months of the year. The responsibility of removing the offending nests will be de-pendent on where the nest is located, that is, on Council land or private property. Noxious weeds are plants that are a danger to the environment, human health or the economy. Under the Nox-ious Weeds Act 1993, it is illegal to grow, supply, or propagate noxious weeds. Property owners have a legal obligation to con-trol noxious weeds growing on their land. Indigenous trees and plants have many benefits in City of Canterbury gardens. Indig-enous flora require minimal inputs such as water, fertilisers and maintenance. This is because they are adapted to the local condi-tions. They also have minimal impact on the environment and if you plant local native plants there is no danger that they will become bushland weeds.
They also have maximum benefits for the local environment by providing habitat, food and nectar for birds and animals, extending corridors of bushland and increasing the amenity of our area. Native grass lawns are generally low maintenance once established; they require less mowing, watering and fertilising than exotic grasses. However, they are generally slower to establish and if grown from seed or tubestock, require weed control during establishment to achieve a good result. We encourage residents to appreciate our local wildlife and birds, but please do not feed them. Not only is it bad for their health, but it can also have a serious impact on our community’s health and safety.
