This is an experimental-based project. We dedicated to exploring new possibilities for things that have a form which has long stucked in the rut.
Design is giving an answer, not solving a problem.
We believe that design are not only for dealing with a problem. It can also be giving an answer to a question. There are only one best solution for a problem but there can tons of good answer for a question. We are not trying to improve the current umbrella or making it more user friendly. What we are aiming to do is to let people have a second thought and get inspired. When people see the Jack-Jack-brella and say, "Ah! I never thought that an umbrella can be like this!"
Experimental-based process
This is nothing like a normal umbrella. Jack- Jack-brella has a unique structure that is flexiable but with toughness. The special attribute is accomplished by the unique material -- POM sticks. It is bendable and stiff at the same time. To let the material perform the best result, we conducted experiments to test different type of parts that assemble the POM sticks. Different types and shapes of fabrics are also the variables in forming of umbrella. Thus, we made prototypes to find the most beatiful while practical one of all. To our suprise, the result didn't go as we thought it would be.
An umbrella as unpredictable as Jack-Jack from the Incredibles
Different combination of number of sticks, types of slider parts, and shapes of fabric conduce to different appearance of the umbrella. This outcome inspired us to think of the super baby, Jack-Jack, from the Incrediles. The unpredictable super power of Jack-Jack always surprise people around him just as the Jack-Jack-brella surprise us. We documented these combination and always get excited when a new "super power" pop up.
