hank you for picking up Kickoff 2011, the ultimate guide to high school football in the Chilton County area. I hope you enjoy this edition of the publication. Several changes have been made to the second edition of Kickoff in its magazine format that I think will make it more valuable to readers, something that will not only prepare you for the upcoming season but also something you’ll want to keep on the coffee table throughout Dawkins the year. Each county team’s section this year is bigger and better. Most importantly, we’ve added a feature story on a player from each team. These players were selected not because they are the most talented players on their respective teams, but instead because they have interesting stories that offer a glimpse into aspects of high school football we don’t always see. It’s obvious when

666

watching the games which players are the biggest, fastest and strongest; we wanted readers to feel connected to their teams in a way that isn’t possible just by going over which players are likely to start on the defensive line, for example. I think you’ll find the photographs that accompany these features pretty cool, too. Also new this year is the Preseason AllArea Team. The team is something we’ve included in our newspaper product in the past, but it made sense to run the package in Kickoff because the all-area team gives fans an idea of which players to keep an eye on, the ones that will be difference makers in every game they play in. Lastly, I think you’ll enjoy the story on kickers. For such an important position, whether teams can field a competent kicker is usually little more than luck of the draw. As always, thanks for allowing us to be part of your high school football experience, which we hope is enhanced by this edition of Kickoff. See you at the games! – Stephen Dawkins

The kicker c Coaches say kickers crucial but difficult to cultivate

I

t’s one of the great mysteries of sport, right up there with why baseball players spit so much, why tennis players grunt so loudly and why teammates slap each other on the butt to celebrate: Why don’t high school football teams have kickers? Sure, some do, especially those programs that have resources closer to college programs than to local Class 1A teams like Maplesville and Verbena. And other teams have linebackers or quarterbacks that play the part of a kicker a few times a game. Think about it logically: Kickers score points, and scoring points is the objective of the game. Therefore, high school football teams would put as much stock into the kicking position as, say, running back, right? That’s not usually the case, though coaches readily admit the importance of the position. No fewer than 11 games involving local teams last season could have seen the result hinge on a kicker. It must

2

KICKOFF 2011

drive coaches and players crazy that for all the time spent working out, running and practicing manly things like blocking and tackling, a football game can be decided by whether someone can kick a ball through a pair of metal posts. And yet, of the eight coaches interviewed for this magazine, only one said he knew who would kick for his team when the games start. And none of those coaches listed an assistant with the responsibility of working with special teams. So, again, why don’t high school football teams have kickers? One reason could be the lack of coaches with knowledge of the kicking game. Most assistants are even unfamiliar with the nuances of placekicking. And these assistants are stretched thin anyway, with not enough of them to teach a team full of players the things they need to know about offense and defense in the limited amount of practice time. Another obvious reason is the lack of players who want to play the position, or that know how. Despite its status as a 1A

r conundrum school, Maplesville has perhaps had the most stability at kicker in recent years. MHS’s Brent Hubbert was the one local coach who felt confident about his kicker going into the season, even if that kicker, Brandon Morrow, will also be busy playing receiver and linebacker. “We’ve had kickers that are pretty dang consistent in practice,” Hubbert said. “We haven’t had the guys who come in and just kick. I’m not against it; we just haven’t had it. So, when it comes down to it, you better have a good athlete doing that. The way we look at it, the better the athlete, the less the coaching can screw him up.” Maplesville’s past few kickers have strapped on a kicking boot and kicked the ball straight on, as opposed to soccer style, from the side and using the ball of the foot instead of the toes. Maplesville’s

lack of a soccer program could be to blame. In fact, Chilton County High is the only county school that boasts a soccer team, and it has benefitted football. Stephen Horn spent the summer with teammate Forest Grubbs working on their football kicking technique. “I played soccer last year, and my soccer coach was like,’ You should kick football,’” said Horn, a sophomore. Even with the experience of kicking a ball since he was 5, Horn said he’s had to work on his accuracy. “When I started, I didn’t know where it was going,” he said. That’s an apt description of the competitions most local teams have held for their kicker position. Isabella coach Scott Booth said he takes a practical approach: “We basically line them up and say, ‘If you think you can kick, come on out,’” he said.

And it’s good Chilton County’s Stephen Horn boots a ball through the uprights out of the hold of teammate and fellow kicker Forest Grubbs. 444

Littleton was moved from fullback, while Talley didn’t play football last year but brings to the gridiron a basketball skill set: good hands and jumping ability. Hubbert said the rotation of players to be used was up in the air as no starters return from last year’s team. “They’ve played before, but now they’re going to have to play when it’s 0-0,” Hubbert said of the players entering games last season when the victory was well in hand. “They’ve got to grow up in a hurry, be physical in a hurry and make plays in a hurry.” Tyler Vowell and Keith Shields will share time at nose guard, and Brett Walker, Robert Morrison and Devonte Morrow will all play defensive tackle. LINEBACKER Outside linebackers Brett Connell and Anthony Johnson are the only two returning starters in the defensive front seven. Cameron Andrews, Brandon Morrow and Brintain Hill will play inside linebacker; and Demitrius Parker will

LINEBACKER With three returning starters, the linebacking corps could be the strength of the team. Carlos Caver, A.J. Tyus and Matt Prebula all have more than enough skill and experience to be productive players. A fourth linebacker to keep an eye on is Brady Edwards. “Everything so

defensive backfield, either as corners or safeties. “We’re looking for somebody else to step up and be that fourth guy,” McLean said. SPECIAL TEAMS Jimmie Lanier has done well at practice with kickoffs, and he will likely also return his share of kicks and punts.

McLean said the Bears are still looking for someone who can kick extra points and possibly field goals, and the same can be said of punting, though A.J. Tyus and Preston Wallace have punted well in practice. “We just haven’t had a chance to really get into a whole lot of it yet,” McLean said

he newest addition to the Chilton County football scene is Chilton Christian Academy’s 6-man team. Long a basketball power in their conference, the Patriots will play in the newly formed Christian Football Association as one of the first 6-man teams in the state. “I told them, ‘You guys are pioneers,’” coach Todd Stephens said. “I think it will benefit us, school-wide and our athletics.” Six-man football is played on a field 40 yards wide by 80 yards long. Fifteen yards must be gained for a first down, and field goals are two points, to name the most significant differences between six-man football and standard American football. The game favors teams with speed and endurance instead of size and strength. “I think it’s going to be a battle of endurance,” Stephens said. “Both sides will score; it will be who has the gas at the end.”

Chris Lassinger will play running back, though Stephens said fans should expect all players to switch freely between positions. Lassinger, for example, will also be counted on to catch passes from Hamby or Pittman. He will be joined sophomore Carl Mitchell and eighth grader Jewell Mitchell. Senior captain Ryan Powell will anchor the offense as the center. Only one traditional lineman is used at a time in most sets because the defense isn’t allowed to rush the quarterback. That rule is offset by the fact that the QB can’t advance the ball past the line of scrimmage himself; he must pitch it or hand it to a back, or pass it to a receiver. 200-pound seventh grader Nevin Todd will also be used for his blocking ability. “They’re learning the plays really well,” Stephens said. “It’s a quick, limitedhuddle-to-no-huddle game. The quarterback has to read the defense. We’ll have just a few sets and then lots of plays out of those sets. We’re going to be fast, and yet we’ve got some if we need to run Stephens beef it up the middle.”

When the defense forces a punt, for example, the same six players would probably remain on the field and return the punt. “I think field position might be even more important in 6-man football,” Stephens said.
