LETTER FROM EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR

A

s we move into the fall season, it’s time to begin thinking of holiday shopping. As you are making your list, please remember to consider Shopping Chilton County First. It really makes a significant difference when we spend our dollars locally and keep those tax dollars at home.

The parks, lights, fire and police protection, streets and much more that we enjoy and rely on in our respective communities are funded in part by your tax dollars. The more we shop locally, the more Chilton County will be the kind of place we want to live and work and raise our children.

ON THE COVER: Chamber President Janice Hull with Chamber luncheon guest speaker, Gov. Robert Bentley.

CHAMBER BITS AND PIECES

WHAT IS THE CHAMBER OF COMMERCE? The Chamber is an organization owned and operated by its members. It is where businesses address challenges together that individual members cannot accomplish alone. The organization promotes its members and refers business to them. It works on improving the climate in which to conduct business for the benefit of all. It serves as the “front door” for the community welcoming new residents and visitors in the name of its members. It publishes a directory of its members and places it in the hands of newcomers to the community. The Chamber provides opportunities for its members to make contacts, build relationships, gain visibility and grow if they take advantage of the programs. If you are a member you can make your membership pay off for you by getting involved. Come join us!

WHAT IS A LEADER By Cammy Jackson

A leader is a person who makes you want to follow them. There is something about them that draws you to them, whether it’s the way they encourage you to do the best you can, the way they train you to do things right or it’s just the way they demonstrate their respect for being part of the team. A leader will allow you to grow as a person and as a co-worker. They understand their success comes from your success; when you do well, they do well A great leader will get more out of you than the strictest supervisor ever will. A leader doesn’t manipulate you or try to trick you into doing extra work when they need it. A leader listens before they make a decision. They will talk with their bosses to find out what needs to be done, and to their team to find out how to do it. A leader understands the job can’t be done without you. A leader doesn’t see you as a tool they need to use to get the job done. –Cammy Jackson is President of the Desoto, Texas, Chamber of Commerce
