i specialised in the manufacture of the inserts in the group and updates to engineering drawings.

mild steel inserts for the mould tool were made by hand, using convential milling, grinding and also lathe work. inserts were made accurately to the tolerances of the e n g i n e e r i n g d r a w i n g s a n d w e r e t h e n m o d i fi e d t o fi t fl u s h t o t h e b l o c k . p i n s w e r e m a d e u s i n g t h e l a t h e a n d u s s e d t o h o l d t h e i n s e r t s i n p l a c e i n t h e t o o l .

Through a standard water supply connection to the mains, a carbon filter and nutrient supplying filter the tank can be left to look after itself. A water change is only at the click of a button.

After connecting to the tank, the app can be used to monitor the water quality, light, air and heat in the tank aswell as connect to online forums and communities.

the ďŹ nal design launched the ball an average distance of 10m

although improvements were found that could be made to the design in future the launcher was successful and a good showcase of metal working skills and mechanical analysis.

Personal project to analyse the sustainable impact of moving to a paperless society in the future.

THE AVERAGE OFFICE WORKER USES 10,000 SHEETS OF COPY PAPER EACH YEAR.

AROUND 6800 OF THESE 10,000 SHEETS ON AVERAGE ARE WASTED.

IN THE THIRD QUARTER OF 2017, iPAD SALES WERE UP 15% YEAR ON YEAR WITH THE INRODUCTION OF THE NEW IPAD PRO.

BUT IS THE MOVE TO PEN AND TOUCH FROM PAPER AND PEN FOR A PAPERLESS SOCIETY REALLY SUSTAINABLE?

future thinking

inspired by seeing the shift in my lectures of writing with paper and pen to using electronic tablets, pens and notebook apps i decided to undertake my own project using the content learnt in the sustainability module to try and research the potential move to a paperless society for the future.

i began looking at the comparable numbers of apple ipads with pencils used in comparison to biro and paper.

2778 iPads to a biro product run of

10,000.

the dirty carbon excel tool was used to ďŹ nd the carbon footprint for the product runs of both variables.

alongside the use of the dirty carbon tool, the eco indicator 99 tool was used. this gave an overview of the ecological impact of the entire products lifecycle.

from a consumption point of view and production of waste, the move to technology such as iPad’s and other pen enabled touchscreen devices is a sustainable option. However this comes with a high usage and energy waste due to the electrical parts required and also has a far larger carbon footprint.

Work outside of my course, examples of illustrative pieces made for commisions or prints.
