PAST SIMPLE 1. FORM verb –ed (regular) / 2nd column (irregular)

2. EXCEPTIONS IN SPELLING Exceptions in spelling when adding ed final e, add only -d after a short, stressed vowel, the final consonant is doubled l as final consonant after a vowel is doubled (in British English) final consonant + y (but not vowel + y)

Example love – loved stop – stopped travel – travelled study – studied

3. USE OF THE PAST SIMPLE A. Completed action in the past. Example: They saw a film yesterday. B. A series of completed actions. Example: I finished work, walked to the beach, and sat there.. C. Duration in the past. Action starts and stops in the past Example: I lived in Brazil for two years.. D. Past state or habit. Similar to used to. Example: He didn’t like tomatoes before. 4. TIME EXPRESSION We use all the adverbs and expressions with past meaning: yesterday, last week / month, in 1995, in the past, an hour / a year ago… They naturally take the final position in the sentence, but they can be placed outside the sentence. That is, at the verb by beginning and separated from the sentences by a comma. Examples: I saw him an hour ago or An hour ago, I saw him. 5. USED TO A. Structure Affirmative He used to work in a bank.

Negative He didn’t use to work in a bank.

B. Use: Past habits or states that are no longer the same. Examples: He didn’t use to like tomatoes. Christine used to eat meat, but now she is a vegetarian
