More Human Than Human

More Human than human has been one of the topics of most relevance

and importance in the sci-fi genre. The struggle of artificial intelligence achieving humanity and the discussion of what makes human so human.

To understand where the topic completely one must look at the origins of such, where the moral of humanity on artificial intelligence was first considered. Isaac Asimov was an author who wrote a series of

short stories about science fiction, where he created a world where all these tales came into play and had to do with each other, blending the

themes of humans, robots and morality. Asimov created three rules on

his “literary universe”; first, “A robot may not injure a human being

or, through inaction, allow a human being to come to harm” second, “A robot must obey the orders given it by human beings except where

such orders would conflict with the First Law” and third “A robot must protect its own existence as long as such protection does not conflict with the First or Second Laws” (Asimov, Three Laws of Robotics, 1942). With these laws, Asimov set the. “I am robot” is one of the stories in

the series, where the morals and ethics of an android in science fiction is put into paper and the three laws of robotics is first talked about.

Since then, the debate of what makes humans’ human and the dilem-

ma of artificial intelligence being capable of achieving humanity in the sense of emotional intelligence has just continued, still being a relevant topic nowadays.

Almost thirty years later, in 1968, Philip K. Dick published the novel “Do

androids dream of electric sheep” that would later be the basis for Bla-

de Runner (Ridley Scott,1982) and the sequel Blade Runner 2049 (Denis Villeneuve, 2017). It is important to recognize how a topic is still this

relevant after almost eighty years, where the world, the culture and the society have evolved so much. In the stories around the topic, the

evolution of technology and the environment is always visible but the ethic and social problem that are presented are always consistent.

When the iconic first Blade Runner movie was released in 1982, it was highly innovative for the decade with the aesthetic on the visuals, cos-

tumes, music, style, and ambiance. The plot is very interesting because it poses the dilemma of what defines the human being. In a world whe-

re the replicants are slave. When one accomplishes to escape slavery, and flees to the Earth, the only way to differentiate between humans is by their lack of empathy and compassion in a series of tests and acts.

The topic in question starts with the replicant company Tyrell’s mot-

to "More human than human". The main character is a police officer (a blade runner) responsible for detecting escaped replicants and retire

them, as the movie does not use the word kill or murder for this term. All the replicants with which the blade runner faces are cold and do not hesitate to do harm for their own benefit.

In the film, it is seen that humans do not always behave with humanity, nor are the replicants lacking emotions. Among them they are very

faithful, they have appreciation and help each other. The biggest and most relevant example of the topic in the move is in the scene of the film when the last replicant of four, Ray, knows that his time is ending

and he will die soon. He decides to spare the main character’s (Deckard) life giving a lesson of humanity to the world and making him witness to his last reflections, with his famous and still relevant monologue

“Tears in the Rain”. Another example, is in the case of Rachael being a replicant and not knowing it is very curious, the man who made her, Eldon Tyrell created her as a special replicant, and one of a kind. She is a replicant with no limited lifespan and with a bigger personality full of emotions, empathy and compassion, almost as if she were human.

From the release of Blade Runner 2049, the sequel, it can be noted that there was a need to develop the topic further. Once more, the movie revolves around the pursuit of humanism and the fight for the freedom

of the androids. The biggest example of acquired humanity on androids

for Blade Runner 2049 is Joi, an artificial holographic woman who is design and created to satisfy and adapt to the need of its owner. The-

re is so much adaptation and reality on Joi that in the case of agent K, they both fall in love. Another example of acquirement of humanity on

androids has to be when agent K thinks that he could be born instead of fabricated, which for an android would mean to have a soul and to

be owner of his memories, therefor more human. Joi then, decides to name him “Joe” and that single act of having a name instead of a serial number gives agent K a feeling of humanism. The third example on this

movie is when agent K is told to execute an end the life of this so called “born replicant” before he believed it was himself, in the movie it is clearly notable that the blade runner is not comfortable with having

to end a life that in his mind, has a soul and is closer to humanity. For the last relevant example on the topic, when agent K is ordered to kill

Deckard, he is told that “dying for the right cause is the more human thing we can do”.

Nowadays the idea of “Dying for the right cause is the more human

thing we can do” is still being used by the government to justify deaths that should not be occurring. A clear example of this is the American Army sending their soldiers to “die for their country”. They create the

image and idea of these soldiers being heroes so they can be perceived as savors, when in fact, we are sadly talking about wars and assassinations all along.

After all the research, it can be considered that humans think that the higher intelligence always leads to an emotional intelligence and empathy. The idea that one cannot be intelligent without a soul.

In the majority of the Sci-fi gender movies the future is shown as a

dark and hopeless world, usually caused by the own human race. Androids are usually represented to be against humans because they try to achieve freedom and owners of their own lives, thoughts, memories

and consent, instead of being slaves to the human race. The android’s aspirations seem to always be becoming more human than human.
