CLOSING NIGHT FILM : INDONESIAN CLASSIC |15

Lewat Djam Malam|After the Curfew ACMI Cinema 1 2 May 2018

Director Usmar Ismail Production House Persari, Perfini Genre Psychological Drama Duration 101 minutes Cast A.N Alcalff, R.D Ismail, Netty Herawaty Black and white Indonesian with English subtitles

7:00 PM AEST

A visually and dramatically potent film about anger and disillusionment, about the dream of a new society cheapened and misshapen by government repression on the one hand, and bourgeois complacency, on the other. Made shortly after the independence, Lewat Djam Malam is regarded as an Indonesian classic and was the first movie to be restored. A rare opportunity to catch a glimpse of the Indonesian society right after the war. Lewat Djam Malam is Usmar Ismail’s best work. It is a social critique on the struggling lives of the war veterans. It is for them; Usmar Ismail wrote this tribute at the end of the film: “For them who has sacrificed their lives, so that we could live to enjoy the fruits of freedom. For them who have given and ask nothing in return.”

Restored in 2012 by the National Museum of Singapore and the World Cinema Foundation in association with Konfiden Foundation, Kineforum of the Jakarta Arts Council and family of Usmar Ismail Estate. Restoration work was carried out at Cineteca di Bologna/L’Immagine Ritrovata laboratory. Restoration funding provided by Doha Film Institute.

GUEST STAR LINTANG GITOMARTOYO Lintang Gitomartoyo, a program manager of filmindonesia.or.id, is one of the figures who succeeded in restoring one of the ‘Father of Indonesian Cinema’, Usmar Ismail’s legacies, Lewat Djam Malam (After the Curfew, 1954), which also had the honour of being screened at the opening of Cannes Classic in 2012. With the help of several foundations, such as World Cinema Foundation and L’Immagine Ritrovata, the team was able to save the ‘national treasure’ of Indonesian film industry and produce it in 2k definition.
