CONTINUED SESSION - THE RISE OF THE BOTTOM BILLION?
William Ascher, Donald C. McKenna Professor of Government and Economics Roberts North 105 Contrary to what many believe, major parts of the developing world have made very impressive strides in economic growth, and probably in poverty alleviation and even income equality. By the target date of 2015, many countries had exceeded the official (but controversial) Millennium Development
SATURDAY Goals of growth and poverty-alleviation targets, widely regarded as unrealistic when established in 2000. How did a really poor country like Bangladesh come to be the second fastest-growing country? How did Sub-Saharan Africa become the fastest growing region? How do some countries avoid the developed countries’ pattern that growth increases inequality? How do income distribution trends affect levels of violence–countries like Thailand, thought to be more politically explosive because of increasing inequality, have actually seen less inequality? So what is the magic formula for peaceful poverty alleviation and greater income shares for the poor? 2:00 p.m.

CONTINUED SESSION PARCHMENT BARRIERS: POLITICAL POLARIZATION AND THE LIMITS OF CONSTITUTIONAL ORDER Zachary Courser ’99, Research Director of the Dreier Roundtable and Visiting Assistant Professor of Government Roberts North 15 Since the American founding, broad agreement on the republican principles embodied in the Constitution has been a necessary condition for constructive policy debate. But what if the broad consensus over the Constitution breaks down? What if the nature of the conflict that currently animates our politics, which has often been encapsulated by the
term “polarization,” is in fact the result of underlying disagreements on key elements of the Constitution? In particular, are the limitations that the Constitution places on democratic political power under sustained attack? In a forthcoming edited volume, co-edited by Professor Zachary Courser ’99, research indicates that instead of partisan conflict building consensus within the electorate for change, American institutions are straining against their constitutional limits to govern within a gridlocked system. The danger of this dysfunction is a gradual erosion of the authority of the Constitution, the legitimacy of its political institutions, and its protections of individual rights from potentially tyrannical majorities. 2:00 to 3:30 p.m.
CRAFT BEER 101

MEET IN THE MIDDLE
Roberts Pavilion Located outside of Roberts Pavilion, Meet in the Middle by Chris Burden is a circular arrangement of eight street lamps and 24 benches. Intended to provide a point of focus and a recognizable meeting place on the CMC campus, it was designed by the artist to be optimistic, welcoming, and provocative, and provides a social setting where students and faculty can interact with the sculpture and each other. The lamps automatically illuminate at sunset and turn off at sunrise and are fitted with LED lights. Burden felt that these installations were about human relationships to the places we have built for ourselves: the posts and benches represent human scale, and they are more ornate than they need to be—small sculptures that dotted the streets of the past.
Anytime
UNTITLED - TOTEM
North of Philips Hall A totem can be defined as an object imbued with spiritual significance, a place to gather, and a place to reflect. Claremont McKenna commissioned Ellsworth Kelly to create a unique totem sculpture, made of stainless steel, painted white, and standing at approximately 40 feet in height. Like an Egyptian obelisk, the totem will serve as both a landmark and a place for contemplation. As is the case with much of his considerable body of work, these totems take as their point of departure shapes and patterns found in the natural world. Situated within a small grove of trees, the smooth, modern form converses with its surroundings through the juxtaposition of the natural and the man made. Rising up above its surroundings, the totem provides a space for self-reflection, dwarfing us in the presence of the towering pillar.
Meet in the Middle is part of a Burden body of work utilizing vintage street lamps. Urban Light, his 2008 large-scale assemblage sculpture of 202 restored L.A. street lamps from the 1920s and ‘30s, marks the entrance to the Los Angeles County Museum of Art.

GIVING BACK We hope that being back on the Claremont McKenna College campus to connect and celebrate with your classmates inspires you to support the College and its future. From the moment students arrive at CMC, they benefit from small class sizes, outstanding faculty, and innovative curriculum unlike any other college or university in the country. While attending, you enjoyed many of these same benefits provided, in part, by the Stags and Athenas who came before you. We ask that you help us continue offering the best education possible and provide the scholars of tomorrow with access to the CMC experience. If you are interested in making a more longterm commitment, consider the creation of a bequest, annuity, or trust. If you have already included Claremont McKenna College in your estate plans, please notify us so we can welcome you into the 1946 Legacy Partners.
