Yuraygir Phoenix Photographers’ statement: Taken in the Brooms Head part of Yuraygir National park after fires in August 2019. There is beauty in the devastation of bush fires - from the crisp charcoal tree trunks to the auburn foliage and the spray of fire retardant. The Australian bush is like a Phoenix - it regenerates after being burnt to nothing but ash, and comes back stronger then ever. Samantha Clarke of South Grafton plunge category winner, InFocus 2020
The plunge community of artists, local businesses, community groups and organisations support the Clarence Valley communities affected by the fire emergency in 2019. We are with you in your ongoing recovery and invite everyone to embrace the power of play and creativity. We invite you to join in, get creative and join plunge 2020.
Take the plunge! Mayor welcome and acknowledgement. Welcome to the Clarence Valley plunge Art & Culture Festival for 2020. This guide will help you plan your festival experience and make the most of the creativity that exists here in the Clarence. We have a rich, diverse and resilient culture and Clarence Valley Council is proud to support the community groups, local businesses and arts practitioners who keep the creative spirit alive in our region. After the events of 2019 there isn’t a better time to acknowledge the healing power of the creative arts and within this book there are more than 150 events that you can choose from - to get involved in and enjoy, either as a spectator or a participant. Try a new skill or craft, create something for yourself or someone else and be inspired by a theatre, dance or musical performance. These events have been produced by our community, for our community and you can follow the Clarence Valley Culture Facebook page to keep up to date. I look forward to seeing you at a plunge event in April - make sure you say hello. Jim Simmons Mayor

SOUL TIES: Kade Valja
YOUNG AT HEART: Sue Bell
‘Soul Ties’ is an exhibition of new work by Clarence Valley artist Kade Valja . The exhibition takes his practice in a new direction exploring life experiences and touching on the human condition, investigating a deeper level than our physicality and flesh - the soul. The exhibition documents Valja’s spiritual lessons and experiences from a human standpoint through a synthesis of classic European painting and street art aesthetics
Memories gather like cobwebs over the years and slowly emerge at odd moments. In the exhibition ‘Young At Heart’ mid north coast artist Sue Bell explores her memories of childhood. Multi-layering images and bringing them into a new time frame works the way memory does. Her works reference family mementos from the past and present a complex mix of imagery is put together like a scattered narrative in a dream.

CHINESE THREAD BOOK Create your own basic thread book with traditional bookbinder Monique Buchbach. A Chinese Thread Book or Zhen Xian Bao is a form of Chinese folk art combining book making and origami. Women made them and carried their sewing supplies in them: threads, snips of fabric, needles, paper patterns, and other relatively flat treasures, all folded and tucked into pockets. The insides were made of paper and the outsides were often made of fabric, indigo dyed shibori and other fabrics. The inside compartments could be preserved with lacquer or wax. Bring your own lunch as part of a shared table at this intimate workshop at Maclean Library. WHEN: Mon 6 Apr. 10-4pm WHERE: Maclean Library COST: FREE BOOKINGS: At the library or online at www.crl.nsw.gov.au
