CLARENCE VALLEY

MORE THAN 130 FESTIVAL AND FRINGE EVENTS INSIDE

Take the plunge! Welcome to the Clarence Valley plunge Art & Culture Festival for 2018. This guide will help you plan your festival experience and make the most of the many cultural events, workshops, exhibitions available here in the Clarence. It’s been an important 12 months for art and culture in the Clarence Valley. Many new creative businesses have celebrated success; we’ve seen tremendous community support for our regional gallery and supported the landmark Yaegl Native Title claim. We have a rich and diverse culture and Clarence Valley Council is proud to support the local businesses and arts practitioners who keep art and culture alive with the plunge festival. This program is for our community and visitors to the Clarence and runs from March 28 to April 30, 2018. There is something for everyone – workshops, exhibitions, shows, talks, entertainment and music. Try learning a new craft, take in a show or live performance, pick up a new piece of art for your walls, and share your experiences on one of our social media pages. I look forward to joining you out and about for plunge 2018. Make sure you come and say g’day. Jim Simmons Mayor

Acknowledgment of Country We acknowledge the people of the Bundjalung, Gumbaynggirr and Yaegl nations, traditional custodians of the lands where these events, exhibitions, workshops and performances will take place, and pay tribute and respect to Elders, past and present of the Bundjalung, Gumbaynggirr and Yaegl nations which lie within the Clarence Valley Council boundary.

How to use this book The plunge festival is a collection of arts and cultural events right across the Clarence Valley during April. Also included are some fringe events in March, May and even June so you can take advantage of what’s on offer beyond the festival dates. Events are listed by category: • Workshops and Education • Cultural Experiences and Events • Music Dance and Theatre Performance • Exhibitions, launches and open studios • Youth and Kids workshops and events • Art, Craft and Food Markets Each category starts with a quick reference calendar and in the top corner of each page you’ll find dates that range from the earliest event to the latest event on those pages. If you’re searching for a particular event but can only remember its name or where it was held, you can use the handy index at the back of this guide, where you’ll also find room to make notes of those events you don’t want to miss. Workshops can get booked out so make sure you reserve your spot early to avoid disappointment. Have a wonderful plunge festival!

Island Collective proudly presents..

ENTERTAINMENT IN ILUKA... IN GRANDMA’S DAY

A cultural art event motivated by the inspiring solo journey of Yamba’s own Hayley Talbot, navigating and kayaking the 400km that is The Clarence River. Clarence Valley artists have been invited to respond to the theme in various disciplines such as art, music, performance and film. Join us for another inspiring evening at The Island.

Iluka was once isolated from the rest of the world, so residents had to create their own entertainment. Then at the turn of the century, silent movies and later the “talkies” came to town. See our display of yesteryear pastimes and watch a screening of “The Picture Show Man.”

A PLACE TO CALL HOME: MIGRANT HOSTEL MEMORIES Snakes in the laundry, dreary meals of mutton and a British reluctance to shower are just some of the memories post-war immigrants have shared in A Place to Call Home? Migrant hostel memories – now on show at Grafton Regional Gallery. ‘While this latest exhibition is based around photographs held in our collection, it is these human recollections, both good and bad, that bring it to life,’ said National Archives curator Amy Lay. ‘People recalled the tastes, the sights and smells (including the ‘rotten’ scent of mangoes) which, on our companion website Destination: Australia, stirred memories and strong responses from other immigrants. ‘Such memories, with their depth of personal emotion and culture shock, give us an insight into what it meant to cross the world in hope of a new life.’ A national touring exhibition developed and presented by the National Archives of Australia. PRIMARY COLOURS: WALL ART INSTALLATION

Photos that represent a few of the thousands of stories and people The Daily Examiner covers each year. This exhibition celebrates work by the photojournalists of the Clarence Valley’s daily paper and reveals their passion to document and capture the life and events of the Clarence. The 2017 selection focuses on the faces and places of the Clarence.

Stuart Murphy and his daughter Emily blend the primary colours across the gallery’s mural wall using lots of fun techniques that only large-scale painting can offer. Through all the rolling, dripping, splashing and brushing the artists will create a very bright and playful artwork.

JENNY KITCHENER: POLLINATE Sydney’s bushland fringe was Jenny’s playground as a child. Her home is now a beautiful rural property located in the sub-tropical Northern Rivers area of NSW where birdsong and the hum of insects provide the perfect soundtrack for creating art. ‘Pollinate’ continues to explore her preoccupation with pollination, but with the focus on bird pollinators. The exhibition highlights the important work birds and bees perform in servicing the reproductive needs of plants. Beautifully and skilfully worked she presents linocuts, monotypes, collage and paper cut outs. (Image: Jenny Kitchener, In the Service of Trees, Lino print, 2017)
