Welcome message Welcome to the plunge Art and Culture Festival for 2017. We have four weeks full of workshops, exhibitions, shows, talks, entertainment and creativity for all members of the community - whatever your passion. Plunge is an annual Clarence Valley Council initiative to support arts and culture right across the Clarence. If you are a visitor to the wonderful Clarence Valley or a local wanting to soak up the many cultural experiences available on our doorstep, this guide will help you make the most of the plunge festival, and not miss a thing. Try learning a new craft, discover local history or take in a show or live performance, and share your experiences with our community at our plunge pop-up hub in the South Grafton CBD, or on one of our social media pages. Join local historian Nola Mackey and the Friends of Grafton Library (FoGL) for two different 90 min walks around the Grafton CBD. Nola will uncover a local history rich in stories and interesting events. Gold coin donation, children to be accompanied by an adult.
Increasingly Aboriginal people in Australia are being recognised as the first astronomers. Many Australians might not realise it, but astronomy and physics have had a profound influence on the history of Australia and its Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. MACLEAN SHOW The Maclean Show Society has played an integral part in the Lower Clarence region for the past 122 years. Events include: sideshows, equestrian events, trotting, exhibitions, sales displays, floral and fruit exhibits and food stalls along with fabulous show case of cane, craft, beef cattle, vegetables, poultry, cooking, caged birds, photography and local schools. And don’t miss the championship dog show. GRAFTON SHOW Now in its 151st year, Grafton Show brings our Clarence Valley community together, showcasing our region’s rural activities and interests. Open daily from 9.00 am to 9.00 pm both days, you can enjoy an impressive display of Arts & Crafts, Cooking, Preserves, Floral Art, Pot Plants, Cut Flowers, and Home Brew in the unique heritage listed Barn. Also check out the Gem Club display, Farm Produce, Poultry, Cage Birds, Alpaca and Beef Cattle. Other attractions include a Trade Expo, Vintage Machinery display and the ever popular Woodchop. The main arena showcases the Equestrian events, including led and ridden classes featuring a variety of horse and pony breeds, show jumping, hack and rider classes. Grafton Showgirl presentation also takes place in the main arena on Saturday. Add in sideshow alley and show bags to keep kids of all ages entertained, and the fireworks on Saturday night as the show finale, and you have an event that is packed with something for all the family to see and do.

Is it possible to write something that’s both funny and informed? After 15 years as a columnist, social provocateur, comedian and writer Mandy Nolan has a knack for opinion writing. In this workshop she reveals how to write humorous pieces with a social conscience.
Learn how to utilize waste fabric to create beautiful, functional pieces. We strip, plait then coil the strands or strip sew the strands into rugs. All fabric and sewing machines provided. Some sewing experience helpful but guidance is provided to complete your rug. A circular rug of 40cm in diameter can be completed in a day!

IF THESE HALLS COULD TALK As part of Arts Northern Rivers ‘If These Halls Could Talk’ project Yaegl artist Frances Belle Parker transformed Eatonsville Hall. Parker created a large-scale immersive installation comprised of suspended lengths of billowing fabric imprinted with imagery and imbued with sounds that map the land, the hall, and the people of Eatonsville. Inspired by the underlying Indigenous history and as a meeting place for the hall community, the work offers a space to reflect on the many histories of the hall.
