House as Garden Residential design in Chicago Spring 2020, RISD Professor: Silvia Acosta

6

House as Garden

The proposal weaves an act of living and gardening through forms of two wedges that are slipping off of each other. The garden typology repeats, filling nine empty lots in suburban neighborhood in Chicago.

1. Entry to the house

The green wedge modifies according to different site condition of each empty lot. The goal is to create a community that can develop self-sustaining strategy with indoor farming that runs all seasons. 2 2. Site plan, 78th St, Chicago

7

During harsh winter in Chicago, the house is a lantern that brightens up the street with green warmth.

Habitation

The process of driving a form comes from tilting the middle wall of three parallel lines that form two wedge conditions for gardening and inhabitation. The south facing wall is thickened and carved out, creating space for plants to inhabit. The garden operates as a spine for the house, creating sectional relief and a sense of delight.

03 Earth Pavilion Design Build Fall 2020, RISD Professor : Laura Briggs Collaborators: Shivani Agarwal, Hiba Hanif, Pablo Herraiz

20

Earth Pavilion

Planned to be built for Spring 2021, the proposal creates a reciprocal relationship between the earth and the body. 80 SQFT footage garden pavilion provides a storage space for gardener’s tool and working bench. Using the earth collected from Rhode Island land, the

proposal involves researching and experimenting with earth for architectural construction. The wood frames and protects the earth while the butterfly roof creates path for collecting water. The large ETFE window provides open view towards the garden for the user.

The collection of images show the experience of attending earthen architecture workshop in Sardegna, Italy. Working with artisans across the world, the participants had experience of learning craft and methods of creating structure out of earth. After coming back to RISD campus, we executed this knowledge by creating an architectural proposal for RISD Garden Club that uses local earth and recycled wood.

Pressurized Membranes Community Boathouse in Providence 2020 Fall, RISD Advanced Studio Professor: Kyna Leski

28

Pressurized Membranes

Located in Seekonk Providence, RI, the boathouse derives from a line in motion that occilates between land and water. The program includes storage space for boats and oars, observatory room, locker room, community spaces, and offices.

1. Section perspective drawn by pencil and pastel, 17”x9”

The shoreline is a charged zone that is an incomplete boundary. Either bulging towards land or water, the experience of navigating the spcae is a constnat reminder of changing time and water.

2 2. Plaster model for studying light in relation to thinness and thickness, 10”x10”x6”

29

The project first begins with animated lines that occilate between water and air. The sequential images are frames showing the process of boiling water and how bubbles are pressured, rising up to create undulating boundary. The changing scale of bubbles is what becomes design principle for the form for the new community boathouse.

The idea of pressurized membrane translates into pulling and bending paper that becomes major anatomy of the building. The paper model became a darwing tool for generating walls in plan that creates movement and organizes storage spaces for the boats.

As if the membrane of paper bends, the project employs mixture of bent CLT and treated wood. The boats are placed along the wall, providing three exit points for the rowers. As the tide level changes through the day, the reflected water light entering the building varies.

Breathing Tower Conceptual design Fall 2018, RISD Professor: Jacqueline Shaw

38

Breathing Tower

The site is an imaginary alleyway. The project employs the principle of how paper shuttle falls and creates gesture of opening and closing. The elastic string that ties two paper petals translates into ceiling that rotates the axis horizontally.

1. 1/4” scale bass wood model

This principle transcends into the wall, floors, and stairs. The structural frame in perspective offers views as if the whole tower is breathing.
