District Updates Trick-or-Treat UNICEF Every 17 minutes, a newborn dies from tetanus. This extremely short lifetime is marked by pain — babies suffer an intense sensitivity to light, sound or contact that prevents even a precious mother’s touch. But it doesn’t have to be this way. In 2010, the Kiwanis family partnered with UNICEF to eliminate maternal and neonatal tetanus (MNT) through a joint effort called The Eliminate Project. As of July 30, 2019, The Eliminate Project has raised more than US $86 million.
Trick-or-Treat for UNICEF is a super easy — and fun — way for the Kiwanis family to raise money to protect mothers and babies from this fatal disease. Since 2010, we’ve helped eliminate MNT in 26 countries. Every year, 24,000 more babies are born unaffected by tetanus. And millions of mothers have been vaccinated. But the fight is not over. MNT continues to affect moms and babies in the 13 countries that are hardest to reach. Now, it is the most important. This month, continue to collect for Trick-or-Treat for UNICEF to save and protect lives. Use this link: https://store.kiwanis.org/Product/Trick-or-Treat-For-UNICEF----Key-Club-K-Kids-Builders-Club--Aktion-ClubKI92014-2696.htm

Endorsed Projects International Partner Thirst Project is a nonprofit organization that works, with the support of youth, to end the global water crisis by building freshwater wells in developing communities that need safe and clean drinking water. What makes this project so important, what is about water? It’s simple. Everyone’s health and sanitation are extremely important. Waterborne diseases have killed more children every single year than aids, malaria, and all world violence combined. small children typically don’t have strong enough me and systems to buy diseases. By providing communities with safe drinking water, disease rates have the potential to drop up to 88% almost instantly! Clean water plays an extremely critical role in treating and managing HIV/AIDS in rural communities.
District Partner Kamp Kiwanis is aimed at providing exciting exercise and adventure. It strives to afford opportunities in order to participate in a unique, creative, outdoor group experience in a democratic setting and develop characteristics of leadership and fair play. The program at Kamp Kiwanis is made to mainstream every child, including up to 20 each session with special needs. It is non-competitive prioritizing group and team building. No activity is forced, but all are highly encouraged. We aim to raise $3,500 for Kamp Kiwanis. 10

*Service Spotlight* On October 28,2019, Lindenhurst Key Club members held their first Teddy Bear Clinic at Harding Elementary School. At the clinic, club members were accompanied by Kristi Ladowski of the Stony Brook Trauma Center. Together, members and Ms. Ladowski taught kindergartners about car and helmet safety in a fun and innovative way which made the students very interested. This included using props and demonstrations provided by the Trauma Center. Such demonstrations included an egg drop where one egg was in a styrofoam “helmet” when the other egg was not. The egg with the styrofoam “helmet” was able to stay safe when the other egg was not. After the education portion of the Teddy Bear Clinic, the kindergartners were brought back to their seats with their teddy bears and got dressed up as nurses in gloves, hair caps, and a mask. Kids had to identify what happened to their teddy bears and how to help them get better. Aliya John, a member of Key Club that attended the clinic thought “The event was amazing. We were able to teach kids about how to be safe in a creative way. We also got to help the students become pretend doctors and nurses that helped their teddy bears get better from what they learned.”
The kids showed great enjoyment and looked so happy that the high schoolers came to visit. Lindenhurst Key Club plans to hold another Teddy Bear Clinic later in the year because of its amazing success. - Robert Hager
