Donna (McMahon) Stehn '76 Donna is working on a book about her family's history and shared the following story about her parents: "Here's a little story about how my parents met. Mary is my Dad's only sister. My Dad's family lived in Dubuque. Mary taught in Harpers Ferry, Iowa, for one year after she graduated from Clarke. She taught my Mom and her three siblings English at their high school. She only taught them for one year before returning to Dubuque. My Dad and three of his brothers were all serving in the army at that time during WWII. Mary frequently talked about her brothers to her students. In fact my Mom told us if they wanted to get Miss McMahon off topic one of them would ask her about her brothers. My Mom moved to Dubuque with her Mom and her sister in 1944 after her father died. My Mom went to look Mary up and Mary introduced my parents. They were married in 1947 and Mary was their bridesmaid. Mary never got married but she introduced all six of her brothers to their wives. I think her brothers thought there was no one good enough for their sister! Mary was an intelligent woman of many talents. She was the matriarch of our family and everyone's favorite aunt. She was forever proud of her degree from Clarke College! Thought you might enjoy learning a little bit about my dear Aunt Mary McMahon! I also attended Clarke College from 1972-73 before transferring to UNI to pursue my degrees in speech pathology. Mary worked at the library at Clarke at that time. "

Paula (Koellner) Friedman '78 Paula and Terry Friedman were presented with the Dubuque Telegraph Herald's 2019 First Citizen Award.
