Who’s making a difference

Dear Friends, Changing our thoughts, changing our direction and being the change in healthcare are the themes of this Touching Lives issue. The evolution of healthcare has brought forth many difficult and challenging times for LRMC, but they are exciting times of growth and opportunity. Medicaid cuts have challenged the financial stability of our health system. With Elaine Thompson’s leadership and direction, she has set the course in educating community leaders, boards, staff and people in our area on the strategic steps we will need to take in order to continue our goal of providing affordable, accessible healthcare to our patients. Even though changes are occurring, our goal is still to provide exceptional care to our community. As you read through this Touching Lives issue we have highlighted how LRMC is advancing our level of care to meet the healthcare needs for our community through PEARL, the new Hybrid Room, and the Lakeland Regional Family Health Center that will be opening this summer. We also introduce our new Executive Director of the LRMC Foundation, Michael Criscuolo, who joined us in May. Recognizing the importance of a robust philanthropy program to support vital hospital programs and services, Michael brings a vision to build and make the best use of the charitable resources available in our area. As loyal donors to LRMC, you will have the opportunity to work with Michael to achieve this vision and to ensure that our hospital can continue to excel in these challenging financial times. Andy Warhol said, “They always say time changes things, but you actually have to change them yourself.” As we join on this journey of change I look forward to us coming together as a community to be part of the change in building a strong foundation for Lakeland Regional Health Systems. Sincerely,

Art Rowbotham Chairman, LRMC Foundation Board of Directors

In view of Day by day, a better LRMC

Dear Friends, It has been nearly two years since I made the decision to join the Lakeland Regional Health Systems team, and what a dynamic and challenging two years it has been! In that time, our system has been dealt two major cuts to our state Medicaid funding, on top of federal Medicare budget cuts and requirements to achieve national healthcare reform. Our response has been to lead the way to affordable, accessible healthcare through leaner processes and structural improvements. In our last issue of Touching Lives, we shared with you our transformation to greater physician leadership and engagement, with the hiring of Mack Reavis, MD, as Executive Vice President for Clinical Integration and Chief Medical Officer. He is partnering with other local physicians as Clinical Department Chairs to help lead us to national standards of quality care. We also presented information about renovations and process improvements in our Emergency Department that have resulted in practically eliminating wait times and faster overall visit times for our patients. This project continues to evolve to meet patient needs, and while we hope you never need our ED, you can be assured that we are working hard to provide the highest quality care in a more pleasant, efficient and convenient way. In this issue, we share an update on the implementation of our Electronic Health Record (PEARL), which went live this summer. Physicians, nurses, other clinical staff and I.T. professionals have devoted countless hours to ensure a safe and seamless transition to a paperless system that will enhance communications between clinicians and safety for our patients. Also, our hospital has recently launched a new Facebook site to engage our community in conversations about health and well-being and to share the exciting and moving stories that take place in our organization every day. Search for Lakeland Regional Medical Center on Facebook and “like” us to join this conversation. Thank you for your continued support of our hospital and system, through your gifts, your time and your loyalty.

LRMCommunity Women in Philanthropy put men in aprons for a great cause The Lakeland Center was cookin’ on March 10th when 68 volunteer chefs presented a variety of culinary specialties to the hundreds of guests who attended Cookin’ Men 2012. With such an array of flavors offered in seven different food-themed areas, including a Taste of Latin Flavor and a Taste of BBQ, there was something to please even the pickiest of palates. The prestigious Pink Panache award went home with Rob and Jeff Kincart, Lakeland’s own “Blues Brothers” whose specialty for the evening was Laurel’s “Really Famous” Potato Casserole. Each Robert Kincart, Laurel Kincart, Correct Coding Initiative Coordinator Denise Sandford, Julie Kincart and Jeff Kincart

year, the award is presented for the most votes for best table display.

The Cookin’ Men Spirit Award was won by Brad Burton and Eric Jonsson who served up Kickin’ Chocolate Covered Bacon. The Spirit Award is given to the chef(s) who show the best overall spirit at the event. Cookin’ Men includes all the ingredients for a fun and entertaining evening, and it’s all for a great cause. The event is sponsored by Lakeland Regional Medical Center Foundation’s Women in Philanthropy giving society and was created to raise funds for women’s and children’s services at Lakeland Regional Medical Center and Lakeland Regional Cancer Center. Cookin’ Men 2012 would not have been nearly as successful without the devotion and commitment of our 68 wonderful chefs, our generous sponsors, our hard working committee members, our LRMC and community volunteers and, of course, all of our guests! A special thanks to all for making Cookin’ Men a casual evening of culinary fun!

LRMCommunity WIP luncheon highlights grants, celebrates support In November 2011, more than 270 guests gathered at the Lakeland Center for the Women in Philanthropy annual luncheon. Attendees enjoyed a delicious meal as well as an educational program which included a touching and funny thank you video from LRMC pediatric patients who benefitted from a 2010 Women in Philanthropy grant. Speaker Tracey Conway

The special treat of the day was the keynote speech by Tracey Conway, a heart disease survivor. Her unique blend of humor and heart-smarts stressed the seriousness of heart disease in women. Tracey asked each attendee present to take a pledge to protect their heart and take their health seriously. Recognitions at the luncheon included the 2011 Women in Philanthropy grant recipients – a total of $76,718.50 that provided: ❦ Ten pressure-relieving cushions and two heated massage chairs for patients receiving dialysis at LRMC. ❦ A teaching simulator to be used for continuing education for LRMC staff who interact with children (HAL is a 5-year-old mannequin doll). ❦ Interactive equipment (two gaming stations) for the LRMC Pediatric Emergency Department vertical lobby. ❦ Two Vision Vein Viewers – new equipment which provides technology to easily view tiny or

difficult to locate veins. ❦ Assistance for the expansion of LRMC Women’s Health Services. Pam Kennard, Manager, Pediatric Intensive Care Unit and the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, shared that the two vein viewers have increased both patient and staff satisfaction. The use of the vein viewers has allowed staff to avoid repeated attempts to start IV’s by being able to view an appropriate vein site on our young patients. Since the founding of Women in Philanthropy only five years ago, $259,461.50 in grants have been awarded toward advancing the care of women and children in the Lakeland community. For more information on the Women in Philanthropy program, contact the Foundation office at 863-687-1296 or visit www.lrmcfoundation.com/wip.

New Family Health Center meets the need for better primary care

L

akeland Regional Medical Center is the busiest singlesite Emergency Department in the entire state with

approximately 150,000 Emergency Department visits each year. This is mostly due to the following statistics: • In 2008, Polk County reported 60.7 primary physicians per 100,000 lives. This is compared to a national average of 89.6 and a Florida average of 96.9. The Tampa Bay average is 83.1 (One Bay Healthy Community Report). • Polk County has an inadequate number of primary care, mental health and dental providers for the medically underserved areas and populations (less than 1 : 3,000 residents) (the Polk County Citizens HealthCare Oversight Committee, Needs Assessment Initiative updated 3/15/11). • The Polk County Stakeholders Assessment found that up to 40 percent of LRMC’s 150,000 Emergency

The medical home will deliver primary care outside of the Emergency Department and at a higher value not only to patients but to the entire healthcare system. Unlike the current health system throughout the country, which rewards high-volume, over-specialized, inefficient and episodic care, the medical home model is based on the premise that the best healthcare has a strong primary care foundation with clear incentives for quality and efficiency. This model has been shown to improve the quality and cost-effectiveness of care for patients.

The global plan is to have a single record for each patient, enabling patients to have a full record of care, whether they are a returning patient to our hospital or a first-time patient from another area. As a result of this transformation, Lakeland Regional is proud of the positive impact it will have on patients, care providers and the entire community.

Busy seniors stay sharp on healthy matters Our Senior Care Program kicked off the year with hearing LRMC’s Vice President of Administrative Services Michael Spake speaking on legislative issues impacting healthcare and Lakeland Regional Health Systems. After the presentation, our seniors sat back and enjoyed “Joyful Noise,” a light-hearted movie of a small town choir out to win a national competition despite overwhelming odds. Our Pharmacy Brown Bag event had more than 50 attendees this year, giving participants the opportunity to bring their medications, herbal and natural products to LRMC’s pharmacists who checked for duplications and answered participants’ general questions relating to their medications.

The Health Matters series this year consisted of three different programs: Staying Stronger, CPR Training and New Frontier in Healthcare. Here are the highlights from those events: More than 75 people attended our Lunch and Learn program at the

Lakeland Regional Rehabilitation Facility located on Harden Blvd. Our program began with a tour of the facility and information on our rehabilitation pools. Participants then had their gait and balance analyzed, and the program ended by learning about strengthening through the use of the Pilates machine. If a person’s heart or breathing stops, chances of survival are doubled if help is provided within four minutes. Now approximately 60 members from our Women in Philanthropy and Senior Care programs could make a difference in the life of someone in our community. All participants attending this program were trained by our highly skilled nursing staff on the updated techniques of adult and child CPR.

New Frontier in Healthcare explored new advancements in technology with presentations from Robin Testerman, MSN, RN, Stroke Program Coordinator, on the Telestroke Robot which allows doctors to have immediate access to patients in the ED who present stroke symptoms even if the doctor is not on site. Dr. Medina, cardiovascular and thoracic surgeon, and Jane Ferguson, RN, Director of Patient Care Services, presented the TAVR procedure that will be performed here at Lakeland Regional Medical Center (please see article on Hybrid room for more details). Dr. Mack Reavis spoke on his new position with the hospital as Executive Vice President of Clinical Integration and how Lakeland Regional Medical Center is measuring quality. The participants finished with two tours – one given by Pam Kennard, Patient Care Manager and Shannon Hilmer, Director of Women’s & Children’s Services of our Pediatric Department, on the newly renovated pediatric treatment rooms and vein viewer, which were both funded by the Women in Philanthropy. The last part of the tour was given by Theresa Ohrmund, Director of Laboratory Services, showing the highly advanced, automated equipment that now processes the labs for the entire hospital. All of these new advancements are just some of the ways Lakeland Regional Medical Center is meeting the needs of the patients we serve.

LRMContributions Publix donation enhances care for pediatric patients  On Tuesday, December 13, 2011 Publix Super Markets, Inc. presented a check to Lakeland Regional Medical

Center’s Foundation, which was the third $25,000 installment of a $125,000 commitment – to transform and enhance LRMC’s Pediatric Emergency Department. Shannon Patten, Manager of Media and Community Relations for Publix, said this donation holds personal meaning for her and her fellow employees. “The Emergency Department at LRMC has had a tremendous impact on many of our associates who live in this region. We greatly appreciate the type of care they provide our children and families, and we are proud to play a part in bringing the pediatric ED unit to a whole new level,” said Patten. Lakeland Regional’s ED is the only one in Polk County with a separate, child-friendly pediatric area with specially equipped patient rooms located away from the adult population and staffed with emergency-trained pediatricians and pediatric nurses 24/7. Through the Foundation and its donors, recent enhancements to the pediatric emergency department include: a special waiting area with interactive toys and games for children of all ages and large-screen televisions featuring family-friendly movies.

Jonathan McCurdy, Publix Retail Operations; Kelvin Blasingame, Store Manager, Lake Gibson; Shannon Patten, Publix Media and Community Relations; Theresa Horne, Associate VP, LRMC; Maureen Leckie, RN, ED Director, LRMC; April Novotny, RN, ED Manager, LRMC; Mack Reavis, MD, Executive VP Clinical Integration/ CMO, LRMC; Hunt Berryman, Vice Chair LRMC Foundation Board of Directors; April Young, Publix District Manager; and Greg Chambless, Publix District Manager.

GEICO helps ensure Child Life Program  GEICO Corporation and the Gecko visited our pediatric department to deliver a $10,000 donation to support

Lakeland Regional’s Child Life Program. Making this contribution means a great deal to GEICO because the hospital, especially the pediatric department, has touched the lives of many of their employees. Whether the employees themselves were born here or they have brought their own children to our hospital, Lakeland Regional Medical Center has played a vital role in caring for the employees and families of GEICO. Providing excellent care to children and their families in a loving environment is our top priority on the pediatric floor. Through GEICO’s philanthropic support of this program we are able to provide the emotional support for families and encourage optimum development of children facing a broad range of challenging experiences, particularly those related to healthcare and hospitalization. During GEICO’s visit, the Gecko had a chance to visit patients throughout the pediatric unit – bringing many smiles to young faces along the way. Thank you to Lakeland Regional’s Foundation and GEICO for making this donation a reality and for helping to create the best healthcare experiences for our patients. George Rodgers, GEICO Regional Vice President; Margie Voyles, LRMC Associate Vice President Perioperative, Women & Children Services; Art Rowbotham, LRMC Foundation Board Chair; Christie Schwichtenberg, Child Life Specialist at LRMC; Brande Burgess, Director of Staff Services, GEICO; Kelly Rohrer, Assistant to Regional Vice President, GEICO; Shannon Hilmer, LRMC Director of Women & Children Services

Good Life RV Resort walks the walk for LRCC  The Good Life RV Resort in Bartow recently held a Cancer Walk event and made donations totaling $3,103

to support cancer clinical trials at Lakeland Regional Cancer Center. LRCC continues to provide clinical trial options for all major cancer types and disease stages, giving our patients a variety of promising protocols and broadening our access to cancer clinical trials in the prevention and treatment of cancer.
