DISTINGUISHED TEACHING AWARD
Announced at Commencement, this award recognizes the importance of superior teaching. It is presented to a recipient chosen by a faculty committee on the basis of nominations by alumni. The 2024 award recipient is Alexis Maciel, Associate Professor and Chair of Computer Science.
OUTSTANDING ADVISOR
Clarkson honors a Clarkson educator selected by undergraduates as an outstanding advisor for the past academic year. The 2024 award recipient is Lorraine Harper, Administrative Assistant of Communication, Media & Design.
OUTSTANDING NEW TEACHER
Clarkson honors a faculty member who, in his or her first four years at the University, is noted for excellence in the classroom, capacity to motivate and challenge students and creativity in teaching methods and curriculum development. This year, Lissette Fernandez, Assistant Professor of Civil & Environmental Engineering, is recognized.

THE CLARKSON AWARDS
Announced at Commencement, these awards are presented to the two members of the graduating class selected by the faculty for demonstrating the best combination of scholarship and promise of outstanding professional achievement.
After founding a school in honor of their brother, Thomas S. Clarkson, Elizabeth and Frederica Clarkson created the Levinus Clarkson Award in memory of another brother. In her will, Frederica Clarkson established the companion award that bears her name. This year, the Levinus Clarkson Award recipient is Miles Compani. Celia Darling receives the Frederica Clarkson Award.
PROFESSOR EMERITUS
This status is awarded to retiring faculty who have served the University with distinction. Honorees have been nominated by their chairs and approved by the Board of Trustees. Honored this year are Daved Barry, Anthony G. Collins, Annagret Staiger and Stacey Ziegler.
JOHN W. GRAHAM JR. FACULTY RESEARCH AWARD
Announced at Commencement, this award is used for research by an untenured Clarkson faculty member who has shown promise in engineering, business, liberal arts or scientific research. The recipient is chosen by the Clarkson President on the basis of recommendations from a committee of the academic deans. The 2024 award recipient is Ginger Hunter, Assistant Professor of Biology.
PRESIDENT EMERITUS
The Clarkson University Board of Trustees honors Anthony G. “Tony” Collins as President Emeritus upon his retirement. Clarkson’s 16th president, Collins was the University’s longest-serving president (2003-22). He was a regional and national advocate for partnerships between higher education and industry, focusing on advancing sustainable energy solutions and environmental technology innovation. Collins served on various national and New York state boards and councils, including the Great Lakes St. Lawrence Seaway Development Corporation, the North Country Regional Economic Development Council, the Commission of Independent Colleges and Universities, the Association of Independent Colleges and Universities, and the task force, dedicated to reopening schools in New York after the height of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Growing up outside Melbourne, Australia, Collins earned his undergraduate civil engineering degree from Monash University and master’s and doctoral degrees from Lehigh University. Before his doctoral studies, he worked for
Australian Consolidated Industries and Utah Development Company.
After receiving his PhD in 1982, Collins launched his career at Clarkson as an assistant professor of civil and environmental engineering. He subsequently assumed increasing levels of administrative responsibility, including department chair, dean, vice president for academic affairs, and provost, before being appointed president in 2003.
Collins and his wife, Karen, were active in the Potsdam community and volunteered with numerous organizations and youth programs.
CLARKSON AWARD FOR INSPIRATIONAL EDUCATORS
This award honors educators who, through their professional excellence and dedication, have had a significant influence on the lives and futures of their students. Recipients are chosen based on recommendations by members of Clarkson’s senior class and alumni.
The 2024 award recipients are Melanie Drury, Webster Thomas High School, Webster, New York (nominated by Celia Darling); and Cristina David, Massena Central School, Massena, New York (nominated by Mercedes Osgood).

INSTITUTIONAL SYMBOLS & ACADEMIC DRESS
THE MEDALLION with which the president is vested to begin the Commencement ceremony symbolizes the authority of his office.
Created by Tiffany and Company, the Clarkson medallion bears on one side the Clarkson family coat of arms, subsequently incorporated into the University seal; on the other side is a statement written by Matthew Clarkson in 1690 on the occasion of his appointment as Secretary of the Colony of New York. Matthew Clarkson was a direct ancestor of Thomas S. Clarkson, in whose memory Clarkson was founded. The quotation reads:
“Your Petitioner humbly prayes your sacred Majestie would in Your Bounty bestow on him wisdom in this office which hee shall indeavour to discharge with diligence.”
On March 19, 1896, the New York State Board of Regents granted a charter to the Thomas S. Clarkson Memorial School of Technology, a charter that was amended on September 25, 1913, changing the name from School to College. On February 24, 1984, the Board of Regents granted university status to Clarkson, and a new charter was issued.
The mace, which is carried ahead of the president and trustees by the marshal in the procession and recession, symbolizes the authority of the University. The mace has the seal of Clarkson University on one side and the previous seal of the Thomas S. Clarkson Memorial College of Technology on the other. It was crafted out of walnut by Leon William Strader and his son, Leon Wayne Strader, both former Clarkson University employees, now deceased.
THE HISTORY OF ACADEMIC DRESS begins with the earliest days of the oldest universities. A statute of 1321 required that all “Doctors, Licentiates, and Bachelors” of the University of Coimbra wear gowns. Both Cambridge and Oxford have made academic dress a matter of university control, including even minor details.
The first such code in the United States resulted from a conference on the subject at Columbia University in 1895. The following are a few of the major rules governing academic costumes and ceremony:
The front of the doctoral gown is paneled with velvet, with three matching velvet bars on the sleeve. The velvet is either black or the traditional color of the academic subject in which the degree was earned.

Whether the gowns have coloring, the hoods must. The edging on the hood will correspond with the above listing. The lining will display the official colors of the college or university from which the degree was earned.
TODAY, our University Trustees and other ceremony participants wear Clarkson University’s academic regalia. Graduates receiving their doctoral degrees will continue to represent the University throughout their careers by wearing this Clarkson regalia. The attire embodies the life and legacy of businessman Thomas S. Clarkson, whose family memorialized him by founding the University in 1896. The black robe symbolizes his pride in hard work (a part of Clarkson’s favorite Biblical verse, “A workman that needeth not to be ashamed,” is also the University’s motto). The green velvet and gold trim on the robe and the hood are the school colors, which represent the goldenrod, Thomas Clarkson’s favorite flower. An eight-sided tam signifies the Clarkson University Values: teamwork, caring, integrity, vision, diversity, service, growth and diligence. The University’s seal is embroidered on the front of the robe.

P. HUNTER PECKHAM ’66, is co-director of the MetroHealth Rehabilitation Institute at MetroHealth Medical Center in Cleveland, Ohio. He is a Distinguished University Professor Emeritus, Donnell Institute Professor Emeritus and Professor of Biomedical Engineering Emeritus at Case Western Reserve University.
He received his bachelor of science degree in mechanical engineering from Clarkson University, his master of science from Case Institute of Technology, and his Ph.D. in biomedical engineering from Case Western Reserve University.
Peckham was the founder and executive director of the Cleveland Functional Electrical Stimulation (FES) Center, which studies the application of electrical currents to generate or suppress nerve activity. As executive director, he built a successful model for interdisciplinary clinical and research collaborations among scientists, engineers and clinicians. His research is in neural engineering, rehabilitation engineering and neuroprostheses with a focus on functional restoration of the paralyzed upper extremity in individuals with spinal cord injury.
Peckham and collaborators developed a number of implantable neural prostheses that utilize electrical stimulation to control neuromuscular activation. They have implemented procedures to provide control of the upper extremity in individuals with tetraplegia, enabling individuals with central nervous system disability to regain the ability to perform essential activities of daily living.
His present efforts concern technology development, expansion of the indications for this technology and technology transfer.
Peckham is the founder of the Institute for Functional Restoration (IFR) at Case Western Reserve University. The IFR deploys neuroprosthetic interventions into clinical use to restore the functions lost due to spinal cord injury or other “orphan” paralytic conditions. The IFR acts as the surrogate corporate partner for the neural technologies that have demonstrated feasibility within the research programs.
He is currently leading a NIH-supported project to evaluate the feasibility of a pivotal clinical trial for the implementation of a new Networked Neuroprosthesis technology to restore hand function in people with spinal cord injury.
Peckham is an elected member of the National Academy of Engineering and the National Academy of Inventors. He is a fellow of the American Institute of Medical and Biological Engineering; a fellow and honorary member of the American Spinal Injury Association; and a fellow of the International Academy of Medical & Biological Engineering.
He received the Frank and Dorothy Humel Hovorka Prize from Case Western Reserve University for exceptional achievements in teaching, research and scholarly service; and the Paul B. Magnuson Award from the Department of Veterans Affairs, the highest honor for VA Rehabilitation Research.
Peckham is the recipient of the Biomedical Engineering Society Robert A. Pritzker Distinguished Lecture Award, a Lifetime Achievement Award from the American Spinal Injury Association and a Lifetime Achievement Award from the North American Neuromodulation Society.

DEGREE RECIPIENTS
THIS WEEKEND, 654 INDIVIDUALS from 28 states, 23 countries and 55 counties of New York state are receiving degrees from Clarkson University. The degrees include 24 doctor of philosophy degrees, 20 doctor of physical therapy degrees, 138 master’s degrees, 466 bachelor’s degrees and five advanced certificates, as well as one honorary degree. This Commencement ceremony also recognizes the 301 August and December 2023 graduates, who have earned 19 doctor of philosophy degrees, 109 master’s degrees, 27 advanced certificates and 179 bachelor’s degrees.
As grades are not posted until after Commencement, Undergraduate Distinction and Great Distinction are based on fall 2023 cumulative GPA. Final determination of Distinction and Great Distinction will include spring 2024 grades and be reflected on the diploma and transcript. Student recognition in the Commencement Program is based on data received by the Registrar’s Office and the academic departments as of April 1, 2024.

CLARKSON UNIVERSITY HISTORY & MISSION
HISTORY
On September 2, 1896, 17 young women and men crossed the threshold of a new sandstone building to attend the first classes of the Thomas S. Clarkson Memorial School of Technology, named for a Northern New York businessman whose success reflected not only his acumen and diligence, but a deep concern for humanity. After a quarry accident took the life of Thomas S. Clarkson, his sisters Elizabeth, Lavinia and Frederica, and niece Annie, were inspired to establish, build and endow an educational institution that would embody his values and philosophy. The school in Potsdam grew to become a technical college in 1913 and, in 1984, a university with a technology-based mission.
Today, Clarkson is a nationally recognized research university with signature areas of academic excellence and research directed to the world’s pressing issues. With its main campus in Potsdam, New York,

MISSION
Clarkson University is an independent, nationally recognized technological university whose faculty of teacherscholars aspires to offer superior instruction and engage in highquality research and scholarship in engineering, business, science, health, education and liberal arts. Our primary mission is to educate talented and motivated men and women to become successful professionals through quality precollegiate, undergraduate, graduate and professional continuing education programs, with particular emphasis on the undergraduate experience. Our community and campus settings enhance the quality of student life and afford students access to and interaction with their faculty.
