A Supportive, Collaborative Learning Environment 4
Clarkson is a highly collaborative community that ignites connections across fields, industries and cultures. When you come to Clarkson, you instantly become part of a robust and active team that values the personal contributions of each member — whether in the classroom, in academic clubs and organizations, on SPEED teams, in business plan competitions or something else entirely. Our students also find the environment to be highly supportive. As an undergraduate student, you will have at least one professional advisor, a staff mentor and the staff members of both our Counseling Center and
Student Success Center behind you. Our first-year mentorship program will give you an extra level of support by teaming you up with a staff member in an administrative department for advice, knowledge and a warm welcome. Asking for help is championed at Clarkson, with over 30% of students using our academic support services and over 50% using our health and counseling services every year. We continue to expand our direct and indirect services in mental health, wellness and accessibility to meet the needs of our diverse student body.

What’s Next? Entrepreneurship and innovation have been a part of Clarkson since our founding in 1896. Now more than ever, we know that today’s innovation occurs at the intersection of business, engineering, science and technology — the intersection at which Clarkson Ignite educates our students.
CLARKSON.EDU
Clarkson Ignite is our catalyst for exploring, creating and achieving what’s next and our approach to producing graduates who can connect across disciplines to create extraordinary economic and societal value through innovation. Under Clarkson Ignite are a series of challenges and competitions, workshops, speakers, master classes and learning opportunities open to the entire campus. A dedicated staff guides students through the innovation process. One highlight is the annual President’s Challenge, in which students form teams from across the University to create an innovative solution in a quest to win $25,000 and have their ideas brought to life.

EXPERIENCE
High-Impact Experiences Lead To HighValue Careers Clarkson students care about what comes after college. We believe in the power of high-impact, hands-on experiences to accelerate their postgraduation success, whether through co-ops and internships, international and domestic travel experiences, highpowered research or involvement in campus clubs and organizations like our SPEED teams. We require every student on campus to have at least one professional experience, usually through a co-op, internship or research project.
8
“ An internship is not only an opportunity for a potential employer to evaluate you. It’s also a crucial opportunity for you to evaluate them. Not just the organization, its people and its culture, but the industry itself.” — FORBES
Career Fairs
Co-ops and Internships Having at least one, if not several, co-op or internship experiences in college will set you up for success after graduation and help you land a position in your chosen career field. We have established partnerships with some of the nation’s biggest industry players, and it’s a list that continues to grow exponentially — from Estée Lauder, Lockheed Martin and Amazon to The Walt Disney Company, GlobalFoundries and Regeneron Pharmaceuticals. Co-ops and internships can be secured with the help of our awardwinning Career Center thanks to our established partnerships with industry leaders, innovative start-ups and government organizations. Many students have multiple co-ops and internships during their time at Clarkson and often are offered full-time positions at the companies where they have their professional experiences — so they are set for the working world even before their senior year begins.
Each semester, Clarkson hosts a Career Fair that brings in nearly 200 companies, all vying to hire our students for internships, co-ops and full-time positions. Students meet employers and then often interview right on campus. To prepare students for the event, the Career Center hosts an array of workshops, one-on-one coaching and information sessions to help with interview skills, resume writing and professional presentation.
Unlike other universities, our 97% placement rate only includes careers in our students’ chosen career paths. Clarkson students benefit from a powerful network of some 43,000 alumni, with one in five alums serving as CEO, VP or owner of a company.

SPEED Teams 10
There’s no better way to get hands-on engineering experience than by joining one of our 12 SPEED (Student Projects for Engineering Experience & Design) teams. SPEED teams are interdisciplinary competition teams that are run solely by students, who tackle a new problem each year at regional, national and international competitions. Each team is made up of only 15-20 students, so all team members truly contribute to the success of their teams and participate in competitions. And any Clarkson student can join any team, gaining hands-on, real-world experience in areas like welding, designing, testing, prototyping, presentation delivery, budgeting, project management and more. One of the best parts? Recruiters love to see SPEED experience on a Clarkson student’s resume; they know our smaller teams mean that our students are a part of the final project from start to finish.

Our scholar-athletes carry to every competition the same mind, heart, strength and passion that they bring to the classroom. Whether you’re looking to play Division I hockey or gather a group of friends for weekly intramural broomball, our campus is full of students who enjoy staying active.
At its founding in 1896, Clarkson had “technology” in its name. Throughout the years, “Let’s Go Tech!” was, and still is, the rally cry heard at all Clarkson events, games and competitions. Despite losing the “Tech” from our name in 1984, it lives on in our Golden Knight spirit. #letsgotech
Home of Champions!
We offer: — More than a dozen intramural sports, such as football, hockey, indoor soccer, volleyball, dodgeball, tennis, basketball and softball. — Over 30 club sports teams, such as equestrian, bass fishing, field hockey, martial arts, mountain biking, paintball, road cycling, sailing, skiing/ snowboarding, spikeball, squash and Ultimate Frisbee, as well as dance. — 18 Division III men’s and women’s sports teams, including alpine and nordic skiing, baseball, basketball, cross country, golf, hockey, lacrosse, soccer, softball, swimming and volleyball. — Two Division I NCAA teams, men’s and women’s hockey, that are both recent ECAC Champions.
Both of Clarkson’s Division I hockey teams won the ECAC championships in 2019.

People often ask, “What is there to do around here?” Clarkson’s main campus is located in Potsdam, New York, on the banks of the Raquette River and in the foothills of the Adirondack Park. Potsdam is the quintessential college town, with a quaint downtown area full of shops and restaurants and friendly, welcoming locals. Here in Upstate New York, we enjoy all four seasons and all that they bring (yes, including snow)!
Outdoor Adventures
Oh, Canada! The Canadian border is a short 30-minute drive from campus. We are 90 minutes from both Ottawa, Canada’s capital, and Montreal. Students love spending a day or a weekend exploring all our Canadian neighbors have to offer,
Outdoor enthusiasts, rejoice! Right on campus, Clarkson boasts 640+ acres of wooded and waterfront property perfect for hiking, biking, canoeing, kayaking, fishing and snowshoeing. And just down the road is the Adirondack Park, a six-million-acre area full of outdoor recreation hotspots, such as Lake Placid, home of the 1932 and 1980 Winter Olympics. Clarkson’s largest student club, the Outing Club, offers free equipment rentals as well as student-led trips, such as ice picking, paddling, mountain biking, skiing, snowboarding and more.

Living and Dining At Clarkson, nearly all of our undergraduate students live on campus, which creates a tight-knit community and leads to lifelong friendships and memories to last a lifetime. Our students create their homes away from home in traditional residence halls, suite-style halls, on-campus apartments, Greek houses and/or theme floors, depending on their interests and class year. A newer addition to the residential experience at Clarkson are our firstyear living and learning communities, where students with similar interests live together and participate in programs that cater to their academic, social and personal needs. Examples of living and learning communities include: Outdoor Enthusiasts, Women in Science and Engineering (WiSE), The Golden Gamers, The Artists’ Guild, Cultural Enrichment, Sustainability, Movie Fanatics, Men in Business, Pre-Health Professionals, Foodies, Live FIT and Go Knights! When it’s time to eat, choose from any of Clarkson’s vast dining options, including a classic all-you-care-to-eat dining hall serving up everything from comfort favorites to international cuisines, as
well as on-the-go locations and coffee shops spread across campus for a quick bite on the way to class. The Student Center Servery, located in the middle of campus, is a popular spot for students looking to munch on madeto-order meals, like paninis, salads, burritos, pasta and burgers. BBQ Nation in Cheel Campus Center & Arena offers a taste of the North Country with products sourced locally. And, if you love national chains, we offer Starbucks coffee and Teavana teas served at Schuler’s and a full-service Subway. Our neighboring communities also provide students with unique flavors and options. Bakeries, cafes, fast-food and international restaurants line the streets of downtown Potsdam. Having a pizza roll at Sergi’s is a time-honored tradition for Clarkson students, as is representing the Golden Knights in the Flapjack Attack Challenge at the Village Diner (a yearlong competition among the four colleges in the area). There’s something for all!

Special Diets Welcome! Your personalized experience doesn’t stop at the dining halls. Our staff in Campus Dining understands that our students come to campus with dietary needs that must be accommodated. Before arriving on campus, talk to one of our staff members about your dietary restrictions, and they will work with you one-on-one.

Clubs & Organizations An important part of Golden Knight life is getting involved on campus. There are over 250 student clubs, organizations and teams for you to check out; you’re bound to find something to ignite your passion. From volunteer organizations, student government and professional societies to intramural and club sports, Greek organizations and hobby clubs, we’ve got it all. We encourage students to start their own clubs and organizations, too. So if you don’t find something you love, you can request funding from the Clarkson University Student Association (CUSA) to become the founding member of a new club.
There are college pep bands, and then there is the notoriously raucous Clarkson Pep Band — the envy of our opponents in hockey and a key driver of weekend enthusiasm. Members of the band travel around the country with our Division I hockey teams. Anyone can join, even students who play homemade instruments, like a frying pan, or those who don’t play instruments at all. It’s all about the Golden Knights spirit!
