I

t’s an exciting time to be an educator. Communities and institutions are actively seeking out engaging and talented individuals to join their teams and educate their youth. This is no small task, as the demand for high-

quality educators has increased exponentially over the past several years. Clarkson’s Department of Education consists of a diverse population of proven and highly respected scholars and practitioners who are committed to meeting this demand. We ensure that our candidates are equipped with the skills and experiences necessary to become exemplary educators within the teaching profession and leaders within their communities. The Master of Arts in Teaching program is a national award-winning program with a 30-year history of excellence. More than 600 graduates of the program teach in schools across New York, the country and the globe. Candidates in the program consistently exceed New York state standards with scores that are 20% to 50% higher than scores at other institutions. The overall achievement rate on the entire battery of New York state exams is near 100%. Graduates of the program typically accept teaching positions either during residency or immediately following graduation. The job placement rate in recent years has been 100%. Our mission is to elevate the teaching profession by educating the next generation of teachers. We achieve this mission by instilling the following core pedagogical tenets within our candidates: rigor, a growth mindset and teamwork. These tenets are fully integrated and reinforced throughout the course of the program. The residency is one of the distinguishing features of our program. Unlike those offered by other institutions, our yearlong residency takes place over the course of an entire academic year. This provides our candidates with a fully immersive experience within the teaching profession and the opportunity to work alongside a mentor teacher within a specific content area. Thank you for taking the time to learn more about the Master of Arts in Teaching program at Clarkson University. I look forward to working with you and discussing the many programs and options that we have available. Sincerely, Catherine Snyder Associate Professor/Chair of Education Associate Director, Institute for STEM Education

Additional coursework is available for those who want to extend foreign language certification to include grades 1-6. Additional coursework is also offered for all other disciplines to extend certification to include grades 5-6. Student Teaching Residency Locations All students complete a seven-week summer intensive term at the Capital Region Campus in Schenectady that is designed to prepare aspiring teachers for their fall residency in a school in the Greater Capital Region of New York state. Additional sites within New York are available based on a candidate’s prior experience and professional plans. All residencies are arranged by the Clarkson Department of Education and approved by the partner school district. Curriculum The MAT program at Clarkson is a 38-credithour program. Teaching practices can be tailored to your content area. Students can complete the program in as little as one year or spread their studies out.

— Students who begin in the summer term (third week of June) can complete the degree within 12 months. — Students starting in the spring semester (second week of January) can complete the degree within 18 months. — Those who start the program in the fall semester (last week of August) can complete the degree in 22 months. Every member of the MAT faculty and staff has K-12 teaching experience. Students are successful, in part, because they receive extensive mentorship and support from knowledgeable teachers who bring advanced teaching skills and extensive classroom experience to the MAT program. As a result, our graduating students are among the most qualified and sought-after teachers in the field.

Master of Arts in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (MAT ESOL) LOCATION: Capital Region Campus DELIVERY METHOD: Online

larkson’s online MAT ESOL program provides candidates with a full 39-credit master’s degree. Coursework is offered completely online to accommodate busy schedules. This degree was created for aspiring teachers who want to work with English language learners. Candidates who complete the MAT ESOL degree successfully will receive Clarkson’s endorsement for P-12 certification in TESOL. For teachers already practicing in the classroom who are interested in acquiring an additional certification, we also offer a 16-credit online certificate of advanced study in TESOL (CAS TESOL). This certificate will provide added skills and value to your teaching portfolio, ensuring more flexibility and security in the job market.

Student Teaching Residency and Fieldwork Locations All MAT ESOL students complete a 10-week summer intensive term. This includes online coursework and fieldwork designed to prepare aspiring teachers for their yearlong residency. One semester of the residency focuses on teaching grades K-6 and the other on grades 7-12, providing a well-rounded experience. Each candidate’s residency is selected with the candidate based on career goals and location. The certificate of advanced study does not require a full-year residency; however, fieldwork components are required by New York state and will be arranged and completed in the candidate’s local district.

Career Outlook New York state needs teachers certified in TESOL. With the extraordinary growth of English language learners, teaching positions are unfilled because schools cannot find certified teachers to hire. In the current environment, a rewarding, high-paying teaching position in the field of TESOL is almost guaranteed.

Candidates who complete this certificate successfully will receive Clarkson’s endorsement for certification in TESOL.
